I spent a good part of the day following up on some leads referencing Councilman Gary Comegys. I will have a Post tomorrow morning with this announcement.

EMERGENCY LANDING!

A commuter plane with 14 passengers coming into the Wicomico County Airport called in for an emergency landing tonight stating they had lost power to one engine. It was decided the runway wasn't long enough so they sent the plane off to the Patuxent Airport in Marlboro Maryland, across the Bay. We are still awaiting further information as to how they made out. Hopefully there will be more to come......

Wicomico County Sheriff's Department Press Releases

Incident:
Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute
Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Distribute
Large Cash Seizure

Date of Incident: 21 July 2008

Location: U.S. RT 13 North Bound Salisbury, Maryland

Suspects: Tyler Maurice Easley, 23 YOA, Salisbury MD

Narrative: On July 21, 2008 a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team (A.C.E.) stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on the U.S. RT 13 bypass in the area of Mount Hermon Road in Salisbury, Maryland. Upon making contact with the operator later identified as Tyler Maurice Easley the deputy noticed a strong odor of raw marijuana coming from the vehicle. A Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit responded to the scene and conducted a scan of the vehicle resulting in a positive alert for the presence of illegal narcotics. A search of the vehicle revealed several large plastic baggies of marijuana and a large amount of U.S. Currency. Easley was placed under arrest at the scene, a search of his person revealed additional marijuana, cocaine and U.S. currency. A total of 3.2 pounds of marijuana, 4 grams of cocaine and $8760.00 in U.S. currency were seized as a result of the traffic stop and arrest. During a post arrest interview Easley admitted that he was transporting the marijuana from the Princess Anne area to the Salisbury area for sale. Deputies are continuing their investigation in to the origin and possible destination of the large amount of marijuana and U.S currency. Deputies also seized and will be filing for forfeiture of Easley’s 1993 BMW 325 that was being used to transport the narcotics. On an initial appearance at the District Court Commissioner, Easley was held on $100,000 bond.

The Connection Between a Deer and Open Government

By Terry E. Cohen, Council Member

Friday, Salisbury Zoo Director Joel Hamilton provided an update on the “perruque-headed” deer about which so many citizens have expressed concern or puzzlement, or both. I’d like to thank Mr. Hamilton for his comprehensive report to the council. The 3-page report appears below this post in images you can click to enlarge and read.

I appreciate Mr. Hamilton’s responsiveness to this situation. It’s unfortunate that my efforts last year to have a simple conversation in order to be responsive to constituent concerns could not have been met with a similar prompt and constructive reaction from the administration and council leadership. To read more Go Here

After a conversation with Joe about this post I thought it proper to let everyone know just how Joe feels about the changes being made at the zoo under the direction of Mr. Hamilton. Joe highly commends Mr. Hamiltons willingness to share information openly. Joe could not express strongly enough, his appreciation for the effort Mr. Hamilton has put forth to date. It is not something we as a community have been used to during the tenure of Jim Rapp. In fact everything has been a secret, until now. The recent report of the Llama's death is a perfect example. We would have never seen any of that information prior to Mr. Hamilton. Well, not without filing an FOIA. As far as I know, no one asked for the information, it was offered, freely and openly. Now we're seeing timely responses to questions asked by councilmembers, without going through the mayors office. What a concept, open government, in Salisbury. The zoo is a great place to start, hopefully, the trend will continue and spread throughout other departments within the city. Could this be the beginning of Government in the Sunshine? The Zoo today, City Hall tomorrow? It could happen.

The Tilghman Administration Says, SHRED IT!

Today at the old Station 16, your paid Firefighters were at the building with several Fire Trucks, an Ambulance and several Chase Vehicles. It truly seemed as if these guys, (I'm not trying to say anything negative towards the Firefighters) were in some kind of hurry, like this stuff had to be out of there TODAY!

I have asked as well as several other News Sources if anything is in the works for this building and the reply is, NOTHING!

Now, getting to the SHRED IT Company. Who was overseeing that none of those documents had any historical value to them? From what "I" witnessed, there was one Shred It Employee on the back of that truck loading box after box of documents and shredding all of them.

Will we see this when the Mayor gets booted out of her Office too? Once again, your tax dollars hard at work!

A Challenge To All of SBYNews Patrons

Everyone,

A lot has been going on in the last year in every aspect of Wicomico County living. Here at Salisbury News we have been trying for the sake of the Community to provide news and a viewpoint that you probably wont get anywhere else. Why? Because in our hearts at Salisbury News (I know a few people are saying yea right) we want the best for our community and without conflicting viewpoints things really would not get done or improve. Agree or disagree at least consider our underlying insights and arguments and not completely focus on grudges or petty politics.

As a community we do not need to be hitting the snooze button and eventually waking up when it is too late. It is imperative that we act properly and accordingly on correcting these problems which are starting to plague us; from Waste Water Treatment Plant spills, Gangs/Graffiti, and within City Government to name a few. I'm sure we can come up with scrolls of problems.

As much as it is necessary, and sadly to often it is the case on this site, we present the problems and negative issues to better inform everyone and try to ignite some public interest, outcries, and action.

The commitment toward excellence accomplishes way more than being complacent or in the stands. Excellence in our elected officials, each other, and programs are what makes community strive! When something is not right it is up to each of us to ask proper germane questions and expect an appropriate response from those who run our Community. If we do not receive an adequate response it is our right to demand one and if necessary make the proper changes through the Democratic process or any just legal remedy.

So I ask all of you to simply list a person, organization, or event which makes our Community better/what makes it unique in some way and leave a brief sentence of who/what it is in the comment section. These are the aspects of the Community that we kick mud on when we do not properly address problems. Think of all the community outreach members who mentor and work with kids who are susceptible our gang problem. We make their job so much harder not nipping gangs in the bud for good. We do no service to anyone!

Absolutely no bashing, profanity, or sarcasm on these responses. I would like this to be serious so as the comments grow all of us can read and be reminded of all of what is good in our Community; the recognition of the imperative to protect and preserve what is good within the Community.

Roommates Needed For Housing Close to SU Campus

Gotta love Craigs List! Is it registered with the City? Does it have the exception to have that many people in it? Is it fair to single family neighborhoods to use it like a Boarding House?

Date: 2008-07-21, 2:51PM

Hello, I am looking for 2 more roommates (male/female) to move in for the upcoming year. To tell you a little bit about the house: it has 4 bedrooms, 1.5 bath, living room, dining room, kitchen, parking in back (enough for 4+ cars), basement with washer and dryer. Located on West College, walking distance from campus. Utilities are not included and vary from month to month. Pets are allowed. Serious individuals looking at the house will have first priority. Currently in a lease with Salisbury Housing. If you would like to cut out the middle man, you can reach them directly at 410 749 BBBB. In reference to 416 West College. The difference in rent is from the size of the rooms.

Is America Ready For CHANGE?

If you want "CHANGE" this will do it.

CAPITAL GAINS TAX

MCCAIN
0% on home sales up to $500,000 per home (couples) McCain does not propose any change in existing home sales income tax.

OBAMA
28% on profit from ALL home sales

How does this affect you? If you sell your home and make a profit, you will pay 28% of your gain on taxes. If you are heading toward retirement and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement community, 28% of the money you make from your home will go to taxes. This proposal will adversely affect the elderly who are counting on the income from their homes as part of their retirement income.

DIVIDEND TAX

MCCAIN 15% (no change)

OBAMA 39.6%

How will this affect you? If you have any money invested in stock market, IRA, mutual funds, college funds, life insurance, retirement accounts, or anything that pays or reinvests dividends, you will now be paying nearly 40% of the money earned on taxes if Obama become president. The experts predict that 'higher tax rates on dividends and capital gains would crash the stock market yet do absolutely nothing to cut the deficit.

INCOME TAX

MCCAIN (no changes)

Single making 30K - tax $4,500 Single making 50K - tax $12,500 Single making 75K - tax $18,750 Married making 60K- tax $9,000 Married making 75K - tax $18,750 Married making 125K - tax $31,250

OBAMA
(reversion to pre-Bush tax cuts) Single making 30K - tax $8,400 Single making 50K - tax $14,000 Single making 75K - tax $23,250 Married making 60K - tax $16,800 Married making 75K - tax $21,000 Married making 125K - tax $38,750

Under Obama your taxes will more than double! How does this affect you? No explanation needed. This is pretty straight forward.

INHERITANCE TAX

MCCAIN 0% (No change, Bush repealed this tax)

OBAMA Restore the inheritance tax

How does this affect you? Many families have lost businesses, farms and ranches, and homes that have been in their families for generations because they could not afford the inheritance tax. Those willing their assets to loved ones will not only lose them to these taxes.

NEW TAXES BEING PROPOSED BY OBAMA
* New government taxes proposed on homes that are more than
2400 square feet
* New gasoline taxes (as if gas weren't high enough already)
* New taxes on natural resources consumption (heating gas, water, electricity)
* New taxes on retirement accounts and last but not least....
* New taxes to pay for socialized medicine so we can receive the same level of medical care as other third-world countries!!!

Isabella Street

Joe,

I was riding down Isabella Street today and just realized that when they installed the calmers they also installed brick sidewalks in half the sidewalks. Iall the discussions ive been involved in with the city and everone else not one time did i hear brick sidewalks mentioned . The mayor really sneaked one in on us with that one. It's no wonder the price of the project went from $80,000.00 to $210,000.00!

There is no limit to the underhanded things those people will do. COME ON ELECTION TIME!!!

Federal Election Commission Reports On Congressional District 1

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has reported the results of fundraising by Congressional Candidates in the First District for the quarter ending June 30. Not surprisingly, Andy Harris continues to lead. The Republican raised avout $432,000 during the quarter and lent his campaign $100,000 of his personal funds. He reported about $609,000 in cash on hand at the end of the quarter.

Frank Kratovil didn't do badly, though. He raised about $376,000 during the quarter and had $454,000 in cash at the end of the quarter. So, Andy Harris has a lead of about $150,000 in cash at the end of the quarter - about $100,000 of which is his personal loan to the campaign.

But, aside from Harris's loan to his own campaign, where did the money come from? A look at the details reveals some interesting data. I looked at all the individual donations to each candidate of $200 or more reported by the FEC. Then I looked at the source of the money.

Let's start with Frank Kratovil. Individual contributions of $200 or more to Kratovil's campaign totalled $303,471 through June 30. Of that, $287,421 or 94.7 percent, came from persons residing in Maryland. That is a very high percentage and indicates that Frank Kratovil has the support of Marylanders and will represent them when he is elected to Congress.

Now let's look at Andy Harris. His individual contributions (of $200 or more) total $916,356 - an impressive amount. But let's look at where they came from. Of that only $493,191 or 53.8 percent came from person living in Maryland. Where did this money come from? It came from all over the country, primarily through the Club for Growth - a very right-wing anti-tax group which is trying to elect Andy Harris so he will do their bidding in Congress.

Andy Harris isn't running to represent Maryland, he's running to represent the Club for Growth and his wealthy buddies in their attempt to avoid paying even a dime in taxes. Let's look at those numbers one more time. Frank Kratovil - 94.7 percent of his individual contributions come from Maryland. Andy Harris 53.8 percent of his individual contributions come from Maryland.

Now I take a special interest in the Eastern Shore, so I took a look at how much each candidate received from Eastern Shore zip codes (216xx, 218xx,219xx). This time lets look at Frank Kratovil first. Of his $303,471 in individual contributions, $155,541 of 51.3 percent came from the Shore.

For Andy Harris, the numbers tell a different story. Of his individual contributions of $916,356, only $91,277 or 10.0 percent came from the Eastern Shore - sad numbers for a man who claims he will represent the Eastern Shore in Congress.
Fortunately, all those wealthy people who live out of state and are funding Andy Harris's campaign can't vote in Maryland. Marylanders of the First District need vote for Frank Kratovil, who will represent the people of Maryland, not Andy Harris who will represent his wealthy benefactors from Texas, Florida, Ohio and other states.

Front Page News?

OK Folks, tell me, seriously, do you give a sh!t, (two days in a row) seeing that two Golf Courses in Ocean City have added GPS to their Golf Carts? I mean, is this front page news, seriously?

I'm serious now, the past two days the Daily Times has had front page articles talking about what almost every other Golf Course I've been to in the past 10 years has had anyway!

Nevertheless, do you think Greg Bassett has been gifted some free Memberships because he was stupid enough to believe this is in fact front page kind of news? Come on Greg, tell your people to get off their rear ends and go find some news. Salisbury, Delaware, Ocean City, northern Virginia, we're loaded with news every single day. Two days of GPS in Golf Carts is NOT front page news.

However, on another note, keep up the good work. You're making this a little too easy for me to shut that rag down. The economy sucks and people aren't traveling to the Beach like they used to in years past and the Golf Courses are hurting bad. I don't think it will take all that much for people to read into what you're doing here and I think I nailed it?

SCOOTERS IN OCEAN CITY

Should there be laws for them? Should they wear helmets? Should they possess motorcycle license? Should they be allowed to use the bike/bus lane on Coastal Highway? Should they be allowed to leave Ocean City's city limits? Are you annoyed by them?

Even The Downtown Salisbury Library Needs Some Upkeep

I was walking past the Library Downtown yesterday and noticed they are in desperate need of some upkeep on the walkway out front. That is, unless they want it falling apart in the hopes for a new building. However, I doubt that because Tom does great work down there and I'm sure this just got past him.

Leonard's Mill Pond

A Family enjoys a beautiful day out fishing on Leonard's Mill Pond this past weekend. With temperatures at hot as it's been, what have you been doing to stay cool?

Loading, Unloading, Who Knows In Salisbury?

When you look around the Downtown Salisbury area, it's extremely evident this Mayor has allowed things to fall apart wherever you turn. Don't blame the economy Folks, your taxes don't care about the economy. Roads don't get paved, curbs don't get repaired, sidewalks are falling apart everywhere you look and Barrie Tilghman has done NOTHING about it. Heck, they won't even paint the curbs in the Business District! Now Folks, you and I are paying taxes and the more you allow this woman to give money to Developer reimbursements and TIF's, the more Salisbury will continue to fall apart. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

New Taggings

Driving the other day I noticed some new graffiti up in Fruitland while driving Southbound on business 13. This building used to be a car detailing shop for a bit and now its for rent. Whomever fixed this up did a great job because it used to look like a dump. The building is on the Northbound side of 13 right up on the railroad tracks.

Obviously "Duce" wants his mark to be there because the owner of the building started to get rid of his original tag. Just another unnecessary expense for the owner to deal with.

"Haze did the same thing, but it looks like someone tried to scribble out his mark. Again the owner of the building started to get rid of the graffiti just to have it come right back.

I saw the tag of "Haze" out on South Brown Street which I posted on July 10th. First I have seen of Daze and I have not seen either tag outside of Fruitland and the same goes for the tags from Salisbury, not being in Fruitland. Still the recurring theme has been increased incidents along the railroad tracks and that these individuals want their tags where they put them!

When is enough going to be enough?

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

Yes, the Daily Times is empty, old and run down. Not even a $3,000,000.00 Press can bring back the old dinosaur and with their stock plummeting downwards, I doubt very seriously they're going to survive.

Mr. Gillis' Daughter Chimes In

This was a reply in reference to the Post about a 48 year long employee being fired from the Daily Times.

"Let's tell the whole story about my father. He was one if not the best advertising salespersons the Daily Times ever had. He was sent to the underperforming areas to build them up. First, Salisbury, then Ocean City, then Delaware. Then when Thompson Publishing was on its tyrade for getting rid of the older employees, they put him at National Advertising, and told him if he didn't meet their quotas (which were 5 times higher than the previous person} he would be let go. My father met and exceeded those quotas, but most of all never complained one bit. If you look in the dictionary at great employee you'll find my father's picture beside the definition. He has in his lifetime been offered positions with newspapers across the country ( some of which were six figure incomes ), but always elected to stay on the Eastern Shore. Gannett moved him about 6 yrs. ago into the position he was in because they were having problems with the ads. being put in the paper wrong. Apparently, that does not matter anymore. And, as far as being at the top of the pay scale, trust me the Daily Times does not pay well. If somebody makes too much, they will do what they need to cut their income. Believe me, my father is not an old fart, and he deserved the respect to be able to retire on his terms not theirs."

Doug & Chrystal Marshall Invest Big Time Into Salisbury

The Marshall's recently purchased two pieces of property side by side on Rt. 13 North at Leonard's Mill Pond.

At first they tore down the first structure on the property closest to the pond and had the local Fire Departments use it as a training center for practice burns. Their intent was to take down the structure and build their new Real Estate and Auctioneer Offices there but just as they got in the materials to do so, Doug received a call from the property owner next door and made him and offer he just couldn't refuse, so he bought it as well.

Now came crunch time where they had to decide, what do we do with this other property? Considering that it's actually in very decent shape, there's no need to build a whole new building so they chose to cancel the brand new structure and go back to the drawing board.

Recently, Doug informed me that they are planning on putting in a Discounted Produce Market there. That's right, they plan on having produce marked down so low you can't refuse buying all of your produce from that single location. I'm even told you may see something there as soon as next week.

Then they're talking about a place to purchase local seafood as well as vendors being there, (like Station 7 from Pittsville) to sell Pork BBQ and Crab Sandwiches. This guys mind never stops Folks.

We wish them the best of luck and I'll keep you updated as to their progress. Wait till he gets hit with those taxes though, OUCH!

Walking Eagle

Senator BARACK OBAMA was invited to address a major gathering of the American Indian Nation two weeks ago in upstate New York.

HE spoke for almost an hour on HIS future plans for increasing every Native American's present standard of living, should HE one day become the President.

HE referred to his career as a Senator, how he had signed 'YES' for every Indian issue that came to his desk for approval.

Although the Senator was vague on the details of his plan, he seemed most enthusiastic about his future ideas for helping his 'red sisters and brothers'.

At the conclusion of his speech, the Tribes presented the Senator with a plaque inscribed with his new Indian name - Walking Eagle.

The proud Senator then departed in his motorcade, waving to the crowds.

A news reporter later inquired to the group of chiefs of how they came to select the new name had given to the Senator.

They explained that Walking Eagle is the name given to a bird so full of crap it can no longer fly.

Who Wants To Take A Guess Where These Lamps Are Now?

Although the Historical Society refused to allow the City to remove certain fixtures from this building, isn't it convenient how they're just disappearing?

Are Dispensary Board Meetings Public?

I was told that the Wicomico County Liquor Control Board is having a meeting today. I was also informed that I wasn't really welcome to attend. I can't verify the meeting because the WCLCB doesn't advertise and doesn't list their meetings on their web site. Takes away from the propaganda don't ya know.
