AFL-CIO Slams Green New Deal: ‘Not Achievable or Realistic’

In an letter to Green New Deal originators Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) and Sen. Ed Markey (D., Mass.), AFL-CIO representatives wrote that the proposal is "not achievable or realistic."

"We will not accept proposals that could cause immediate harm to millions of our members and their families. We will not stand by and allow threats to our members’ jobs and their families’ standard of living go unanswered," wrote Cecil Roberts, president of the United Mine Workers of America, and Lonnie Stephenson, president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

The Green New Deal does not offer sufficient support for labor unions with its sweeping changes that would affect United States infrastructure and industry, according to the AFL-CIO.

Sen. John Barrasso (R., Wyo.) tweeted his support for the letter, writing, "The @AFLCIO, which represents 12.5 million workers & includes 55 labor unions, slams the #GreenNewDeal in a letter to @SenMarkey & @AOC: ‘We will not accept proposals that could cause immediate harm to millions of our members and their families.' I agree with the AFL-CIO."

Democrats unveil new Equality Act to add LGBT protections into federal law

Democrats raucously announced Wednesday the latest version of the proposed Equality Act, which would add gay and transgender protections to the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

“We’re asking for no more and no less” than equal rights for the LGBTQ community, the proposal’s sponsor, Rep. David Cicilline of Rhode Island, said during the bill’s unveiling in a reception room at the U.S. Capitol.

Democrats have introduced the legislation before, but never with the backing of a majority in one house of Congress. Most socially conservative members of Congress, who oppose LGBTQ lifestyles as being antithetical to biblical teachings, are unlikely to support the bill.

On Wednesday, the changed dynamics of congressional leadership were on display, as nearly 30 Democrats climbed onto a riser in the Rayburn Reception Room with a quartet of American flags in front of an oil painting of George Washington, as House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy moved through the crowd to reach his offices.

“Let’s insist this will be on the floor of the Senate,” said Sen. Jeff Merkely of Oregon, a clear shot at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who controls what bills receive a vote.

Ilhan Omar’s Daughter Leading Climate Change School Walkouts in U.S.This Fri

Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) daughter is leading a national movement of students seeking to ditch class on Friday to participate in a worldwide climate change protest.

Omar’s daughter, Isra Hirsi, 16, of Minneapolis, is spearheading the nationwide youth climate strike protests across the U.S. in nearly 50 states and Washington, DC., along with co-organizers Alexandria Villasenor, 13, of New York, and Haven Coleman, 12, of Denver.

Hirsi, who lists on Twitter page that she is the head of the Minnesota High School Democrats and several other left-wing youth-based organizations, said in a recent interview with Grist that she is looking to “change the conversation” on issues such as the Green New Deal by organizing the strike.

“That’s what we’re trying to do: Change the conversation not only about things like the Green New Deal but so much more. Obviously, one strike isn’t going to change everything, but this isn’t the last strike,” Hirsi said.

Democrat Senator: ‘No Discernible Penalty’ for Assaultive Students in NYC Schools

New York state Sen. Leroy Comrie lambasted New York City’s school discipline policy that has allowed assaultive students to go without punishment for their acts to help them avert the “school-to-prison pipeline.”

In an op-ed at the New York Post, the Democrat state senator related “alarming” incidents that were reported to him by both teachers and parents, and described the city’s public schools as places mired in chaos:

I heard from two different teachers who were assaulted by students who were never removed from the building. In both instances, medical attention was required for the assaulted educators.
The parents mentioned bullying as a major concern and the impact of having “suspended” students return to the school or classroom of the victim.

In addition, parents who have attended meetings and hearings for a child who has been bullied are often told nothing can be done to remove the perpetrator from the classroom or separate that same student from the victim.
The Obama administration’s policy urging leniency for minority students in schools in order to help them avoid incarceration has led to increased chaos and fear, wrote law professor Gail Heriot, a member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, in an op-ed at USA Today in March 2018.

JUST IN: TWO ROCKETS FIRED AT TEL AVIV FROM GAZA

The Israeli military confirmed that two rockets were fired towards central Israel on Thursday evening, with at least two loud explosions heard in the Gush Dan region.

According to the IDF, although the Iron Dome missile defense system was activated, there were no interceptions as both rockets fell in open territory.

It was the first time sirens were activated in Tel Aviv since the last war with Gaza in 2014 and several Israelis were treated for shock.

As a result of the rockets, Israeli Prime Minister and Defense Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be holding security consultations at the Kirya IDF Military Headquarters in Tel Aviv to discuss an Israeli response.

Local reports in Gaza said that Hamas had begun evacuating military posts in anticipation of retaliatory strikes by Israel.

U.S. college admissions scandal sparks $500 billion lawsuit

The U.S. college admissions scandal that erupted this week has triggered private litigation accusing rich, well-connected parents of buying spots for their children at prestigious schools, and keeping children of less wealthy parents out.
A $500 billion civil lawsuit filed by a parent on Wednesday in San Francisco accused 45 defendants of defrauding and inflicting emotional distress on everyone whose "rights to a fair chance at entrance to college" were stolen through their alleged conspiracy.
In the largest known college admissions scandal in U.S. history, federal prosecutors on Tuesday said a California company made about $25 million by charging parents to secure spots for their children in elite schools, including Georgetown, Stanford and Yale, by cheating the admissions process.

Mass. to Vote on Bill Equating Counseling for Gender Confusion with Child Abuse

LGBTQ activists are attempting to push through the Massachusetts legislature Wednesday a bill that would make it a crime for children and their parents to obtain professional counseling for unwanted sexual attractions or gender confusion.

The legislation, if enacted, would equate mental health counseling for a young person’s unwanted same-sex attraction or gender confusion with child abuse.

“SB 70 AND HB 140 target parents simply trying to assist their gender confused children by requiring that any counseling (specifically talk therapy) that they receive affirm liberal gender ideology and sex changes,” says the Massachusetts Family Institute (MFI), which opposes the legislation.

“A well-meaning mental health provider would be handcuffed and not able to explore the source of a client’s feelings, and be required by law to affirm hormone therapy and sex change surgery, regardless of the views of parents or what is in the best interest of the child,” the group states, adding:

Reps. Jordan and Meadows: Democrats don't care about the integrity of the census

Do you know how many people in the United States are American citizens? No one does. And the Democrats don’t want you to find out.

For nearly 150 years, the United States asked people whether they were citizens when filling out various census forms. Thomas Jefferson first proposed the idea in 1800. A citizenship question was added to the official census in 1820. The question was consistently asked until 1960. In December of 2017, the Trump administration added the question back to the survey.

Democrats were furious when news broke that the citizenship question would be added to the 2020 census. They argued that “Adding [the] question to the 2020 census could scare away millions of immigrants from filling out their mandatory surveys.”

Several liberal states immediately sued the Trump administration, mistakenly arguing that the administration had acted arbitrarily when it added the citizenship question back into the survey. The case now awaits its fate in the Supreme Court. But that isn’t stopping the Democrat-led House Oversight Committee from calling Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to testify about the administration’s decision on Thursday.

Such a hearing is designed to interfere with the ongoing Supreme Court case. The inappropriateness of this is not a partisan issue. Even President Bill Clinton’s assistant attorney general, Robert Raben, warned that holding a Congressional hearing in the midst of litigation creates the risk that the court will be swayed by undue political and Congressional influence.

State Legislation Could Triple Offshore Wind Energy Capacity

OCEAN CITY — While it has been quiet for several months on the issue of offshore wind farms, a pair of bills circulating in the General Assembly could, if approved, essentially triple the capacity of wind energy off Maryland’s shores.

Since the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) in 2017 approved two offshore wind energy projects off the coast of Ocean City, town officials have been in a prolonged battle to have the two approved companies site their wind turbines as far as 26 nautical miles off the coast, or a distance believed to have the turbines not visible from the shoreline.

After considerable debate, one of the approved companies, US Wind, has acquiesced somewhat and agreed to place its turbines no closer than 17 miles from the resort’s coast, while a second project would site its turbines in a range of 17-21 miles offshore, or at the western edge of the state’s designated Wind Energy Area (WEA).

Obama DOJ Told FBI Not To Charge Hillary, Lisa Page Reveals What The 'Insurance Policy' Was

House Judiciary Committee members released the transcript of former FBI lawyer Lisa Page's testimony in front of the committee last year and it contained several major revelations.

One of the biggest revelations was that Page, who was having an affair with then-FBI agent Peter Strzok, said that the infamous "insurance policy" text message was referring to the Russia investigation.

"During her interview with the Judiciary Committee in July 2018, Page was questioned at length about that text — and essentially confirmed this referred to the Russia investigation while explaining that officials were proceeding with caution, concerned about the implications of the case while not wanting to go at 'total breakneck speed' and risk burning sources as they presumed Trump wouldn't be elected anyway," Fox News reported. "Further, she confirmed investigators only had a 'paucity' of evidence at the start."

College scandal's big lesson: College educations are worthless

The college admissions scandal exposed by federal prosecutors Tuesday is at once shocking and unsurprising.

Shocking because of the dollar amounts involved, the lengths to which parents and the professional riggers went, and the brazenness of it all. Unsurprising because everyone suspected that the wealthy have a way of rigging the system and playing by a different set of rules from the rest of us.

Donald Trump is our president, and Bernie Sanders is the Democrats' rock star right now, precisely because average Americans are furious at what seems like a tilted playing field. This sort of thing only heightens that widely held perception.

Look closely enough, and you’ll see another shocking yet unsurprising lesson of this all: College education isn’t all that valuable. Think about what was involved here. The most brazen cheating here involved wealthy parents getting smarter kids to take their own children’s SATs, or else bribing proctors to correct the tests after they were completed.

50 Actual College Course Titles Proving America’s Universities Are Training Students To Be Socialists

What in the world are they teaching to our young people?  As you go through the list of college course titles below, I am sure that many of you will be completely shocked. Most parents assume that they are sending their children to college to get prepared for their future careers, but the truth is that a lot of our major colleges and universities have become little more than indoctrination centers for progressive thought.  Our college students are literally being systematically trained to be socialists, and it is working.  According to a brand new Harris Poll that was just released, 37.2 percent of all Americans “prefer living in a socialist country”.  But for Millennials and Generation Z combined, that figure is 49.6 percent.  That means that essentially half of our young adults want to be socialists, and that has enormous implications for the future of our society.
So how did this happen?
Well, the truth is that it really isn’t a mystery.  Progressives have a stranglehold on higher education in the United States, and they are training future generations of leaders to think just like them.
Young America’s Foundation has just released their yearly report on the craziest college courses in America, and I pulled some examples out of that report that demonstrate how bad things have gotten.
The following are 50 actual college course titles that prove that America’s universities are literally training our college students to be socialists…

JUST IN: Senate votes to reject Trump's national emergency declaration, setting up his first veto

In a rebuke of the president, the Senate voted 59-41 to pass legislation Thursday afternoon rejecting President Trump's national emergency declaration concerning the U.S.-Mexico border. Twelve Republicans joined Democrats in voting to pass the resolution.

The president issued his emergency declaration as a way to free up funding to build his long-promised wall along the southern border after Congress refused to provide the $5 billion he originally requested. New budget requests now put that total dollar amount at over $8 billion.

While the bill now moves to the president's desk, Mr. Trump will likely move to issue his first veto of his presidency thus far after tweeting Thursday morning that he was "prepared" to do so if necessary.

10 brutal killers on California death row who have been saved by execution moratorium

Some of America's most notorious killers have been spared the death penalty by California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Newsom signed an executive order Wednesday halting the death penalty in his state, providing reprieve for 737 death row inmates.

“The intentional killing of another person is wrong and as governor, I will not oversee the execution of any individual,” the Democrat said Wednesday. “Our death penalty system has been, by all measures, a failure.”

Newsom's executive order will not permanently abolish the death penalty in the Golden State. The moratorium on executions will last while Newsom remains governor of California, and his successor could reverse course. Abolishing the death penalty in California can only be done through the state legislature or voter initiative. The state has not executed anyone since 2006.

Are Some Dogs More Dangerous? State Is Urged to Shed ‘Outdated Stereotypes’

Companies would not be allowed to charge higher homeowners or renters insurance premiums for families who own certain breeds of dogs if a bill being considered by the Maryland General Assembly becomes law.

The measure would benefit people who own Rottweilers, pit bulls and other animals with reputations — unfounded in the view of many — for being more of a public safety threat than other breeds.

Senate Bill 647 is supported by animal-welfare organizations. Representatives of several of the companies that underwrite insurance policies in Maryland oppose the legislation.

It was introduced by Sen. Katherine A. Klausmeier (D-Baltimore County).

Two portions of mushrooms each week could 'HALVE risk of brain decline that leads to dementia in old age'

Eating two portions of mushrooms per week could halve your risk of abnormal brain decline in old age.

Researchers found people who eat 300g or more of cooked mushrooms – about equal to a medium-sized punnet – have a reduced risk of mild cognitive impairment.

And even eating smaller amounts could still be beneficial, they said.

MCI is between natural brain decline and dementia, and people with the condition may experience forgetfulness and reduced language and attention skills.

Mushrooms contain an amino acid which the body can't make for itself and which is found in particularly low levels in people with MCI, scientists said.

Maryland Fishing Report

March is a time of fluctuating weather, a sort of back-and-forth pull between seasons. Spring is beginning to win out and signs are seen everywhere. Daffodils are opening up, spring peepers are calling out on warmer nights and anglers are fishing for stocked trout and other freshwater fish, stocked trout, and even trying their luck on the spring spawning runs of yellow and white perch.

Yellow perch are being caught and may hit their peak towards the end of the week. The peak of the spawning runs is governed by warming water temperatures and increased daylight periods.

Forecast Summary: March 13-19

As we approach the March 21 vernal equinox marking the beginning of spring, expect temperatures first to warm through Friday and then cool through next Tuesday. Thursday and Friday will see windy conditions along with a chance of rain, and then it will be partly sunny skies through Tuesday. These typical March conditions will continue to warm Chesapeake Bay waters for gamefish preparing to spawn in the next several weeks.

Police Chief Says State Knew About Controversial Cop’s Disciplinary History When It Approved Hire

A former Eastern Shore police chief says Maryland officials had all “pertinent” internal affairs files when they approved his department’s decision to hire a problem-plagued cop from Delaware now at the center of the Anton Black controversy.

But the state disagrees, saying the documents the local police shared with state officials reflected only “minor” personnel matters – and not potentially disqualifying information about the history of the Greensboro police officer, Thomas Webster IV.

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services must certify every police officer hired by local police agencies after reviewing the officer’s application, along with the record and related paperwork submitted by the police department that wants to hire the officer. But community activists and civil rights groups on the Eastern Shore are suggesting that Webster – one of three police officers who took the 19-year-old teenager into custody shortly before he died last September – should never have been hired in the first place.

Ban on Welfare-Dependent Immigration to U.S. Expected This Year

A federal regulation to ensure that legal immigrants who are a public burden on American taxpayers are not allowed to permanently resettle in the U.S. is expected sometime this year, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officials tell Breitbart News.

The Trump administration legal immigration reform, known as the “public charge rule,” has been weighed by USCIS since the fall of last year and officials tell Breitbart News that the new regulation — which is expected to save American taxpayers billions while slowing the flow of mass unskilled legal immigration to the country — is likely to be enacted in full this year.

“It’s incumbent upon the U.S. government to evaluate [immigration] applications in a manner consistent with federal law, and the proposed public charge regulation is a necessary step to achieving that goal,” a USCIS official told Breitbart News in a statement.

Cummings: Cohen not in trouble for misleading committee

The Democrat chairman of the House Oversight Committee said Wednesday that he will not attempt to punish Michael Cohen for misleading the committee last month when he claimed he’d never asked President Trump for a pardon.

Rep. Elijah Cummings said Cohen, Mr. Trump’s former personal lawyer, has since clarified through his own lawyer that his testimony “could have been clearer.”

Cohen now says he was only referring to a specific period of time in his testimony, according to a letter from his lawyer.

The Maryland Democrat said that was good enough to get Cohen off the hook. He could have faced prosecution for lying to Congress.

“Our practice on this committee is to give witnesses an opportunity to clarify their testimony, and that is what Mr. Cohen has done,” Mr. Cummings said. “I do not see the need for further action — at least at this time.”

Maryland Senate passes legislation to award millions of dollars in tax credits for child care

Maryland’s state Senate unanimously passed legislation to greatly expand the number of residents who can receive tax credits to help pay for child care.

The Senate voted 47-0 in favor of Montgomery County Sen. Nancy King’s legislation that would provide millions of dollars more in tax credits for child and dependent care costs. A financial analysis found that the bill approved Monday night would cost $17.5 million in fiscal year 2020 and $20 million in fiscal year 2024.

In tax year 2017, about 22,700 taxpayers who make less than $50,000 annually claimed about $3.4 million in tax credits for child care costs under existing law.

Resident backlash hits Berlin Falls park

In approving $124,000 to demolish seven small buildings and a digester at Berlin Falls park on Monday night, the Town Council gave an angry mob a focal point in its objections to town spending.

The 5-0 vote came after months of research by town staff on whether the buildings could be repurposed. The vote also was preceded by several months of debate by the Berlin Falls Park Advisory Committee on potential alternate uses.

When none were deemed worthwhile, the committee recommended demolition and the Town Council awarded a contract to Coastal Site Works LLC.

Funding for the project comes from a $3 million bond to buy the property, with $2.5 million earmarked for the property itself based on the appraised value, and $500,000 set aside for park development.

Before deploying to Afghanistan, Sen. Smith races to finish ambitious agenda

By Diane Rey
For Maryland Reporter

State Sen. William “Will” C. Smith Jr. fondly recalls talking politics with his dad. But he didn’t always appreciate those conversations as a teenager.

Back then, he was often more interested in borrowing $20 to take a girl to the movies, he said. But his father, a cab and, later, a limo driver, wanted him to sit down and discuss the latest item he’d clipped from the newspaper, often about rising African Americans politicians like Doug Wilder, first black governor of Virginia.

His father would tack those news clips on his bulletin board, and they grew to be 15 years’ deep.

Governor Hogan Statement on School After Labor Day

Governor Hogan Statement on School After Labor Day

ANNAPOLIS, MD - Governor Larry Hogan today released the following statement on the passage of Senate Bill 128 through the House of Delegates:

“This is just politics at its worst. As if it isn’t bad enough that members of the legislature are attempting to reverse our common sense initiative to start school after Labor Day, they are now using heavy-handed tactics to unfairly influence the ballot process and any petition to bring this issue directly to Maryland voters.

"In 2016, after years of public outcry, I took action to return to the tradition of starting school after Labor Day. This is the same action that was recommended by the legislature’s own commission, supported by the former governor, and favored by more than 70% of the people of Maryland.

"Now this popular idea is being threatened by out-of-touch politicians and special interests. Members of the Maryland Senate should heed the calls of the overwhelming majority of Marylanders - reject this legislation and repudiate this thinly veiled attempt to manipulate the will of our citizens."

Media Matters President Wrote Blog Posts About ‘Japs,’ ‘Jewry’ And ‘Trannies’

Media Matters President Angelo Carusone is currently leading a boycott campaign against Fox News host Tucker Carlson, a co-founder of The Daily Caller News Foundation, in an attempt to get him fired.

Carusone and Media Matters, which openly pine for the destruction of Fox News, have justified the left-wing boycott campaign by pointing to a number of statements that Carlson made on a radio shock jock show between 2006 and 2011.

But Carusone has his own track record of inflammatory statements. Carusone’s now-defunct blog included degrading references to “trannies,” “jewry” and Bangladeshis.

Carusone posted a lengthy diatribe in November 2005 about a Bangladeshi man who was robbed by “a gang of transvestites,” as Carusone described it. Carusone was offended that the gang was described as “attractive” in an article.

“Did you notice the word attractive? What the f**k is that doing in there? Is the write[r] a tranny lover too? Or, perhaps he’s trying to justify how these trannies tricked this Bangladeshi in the first place? Look man, we don’t need to know whether or not they were attractive. The f**king guy was Bangladeshi,” Carusone wrote. “And while we’re out, what the hell was he doing with $7,300 worth of stuff. The guy’s Banladeshi! [sic]”

Child support would be calculated differently under bills being considered by Maryland General Assembly

A sweeping package of bills being considered by the General Assembly would change how child support payments are determined by Maryland courts.

The legislation would affect “hundreds of thousands” of people who depend on the child support system when parents split up and must reach agreements on custody, visitation and how to split the costs of the children they share, House Majority Leader Del. Kathleen Dumais said.

Among the proposals, courts could consider whether a parent has an ability to earn a paycheck and makes enough money to live on when writing child support orders. The bills also would update a formula to determine how much a separated parent pays to reflect how much it costs to raise a child.

The handful of bills, heard this week by House and Senate committees that are expected to vote in the coming days, were recommended by a work group made up of child advocates, family law attorneys and public stakeholders.

Bills would permit high school voter registration in Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland — Eligible students could register at their high schools to vote under bills making their way through the state House and Senate.

House bill 423, sponsored by Delegate Ariana Kelly, D-Montgomery, and Senate bill 934, sponsored by Sen. Jeff Waldstreicher, D-Montgomery, would allow students and teachers at public and private high schools who meet the requirements for voter registration to do so at their respective schools.

Each school would designate faculty or staff members to distribute and collect voter registration materials. Those materials would be then submitted to the appropriate state election official within five days of receiving them.

According to Child Trends, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research center, 51 percent of young adults ages 18-24 registered for the 2016 presidential election. Thirty-nine percent voted in the election.

Lisa Page admitted Obama DOJ ordered stand-down on Clinton email prosecution

Former FBI lawyer Lisa Page admitted under questioning from Texas Republican Rep. John Ratcliffe last summer that "the FBI was ordered by the Obama DOJ not to consider charging Hillary Clinton for gross negligence in the handling of classified information," the congressman alleged in a social media post late Tuesday, citing a newly unearthed transcript of Page's closed-door testimony.

Page and since-fired FBI Special Agent Peter Strzok, who were romantically involved, exchanged numerous anti-Trump text messages in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election, and Republicans have long accused the bureau of political bias. But Page's testimony was perhaps the most salient evidence yet that the Justice Department improperly interfered with the FBI's supposedly independent conclusions on Clinton's criminal culpability, Ratcliffe alleged.

"So let me if I can, I know I’m testing your memory," Ratcliffe began as he questioned Page under oath, according to a transcript excerpt he posted on Twitter. "But when you say advice you got from the Department, you’re making it sound like it was the Department that told you: You’re not going to charge gross negligence because we’re the prosecutors and we’re telling you we’re not going to —"

Page interrupted: "That is correct," as Ratcliffe finished his sentence, " -- bring a case based on that."
