Elderly Salisbury Maryland Couple Evicted From Their Rental Home

Question?
My neighbor just came home for lunch and knocked on my door asking me to watch his stuff. They are an elderly couple and being evicted. It sounds like they have been struggling and late on the rent, but have payment now and the rental company said there is nothing they can do. He is obviously choked up and asked if I knew what they could do. I said I have no idea other than maybe the Red Cross. The crew must have gone to lunch and are back now so he left? Does anyone know what resources are available to help someone get back in their home and stop the eviction process? They are putting the furniture on the lawn and all the smaller items are going in 55 gal. garbage bags. It breaks my heart to see this happen to anyone, especially an older couple.

UPDATE: Larry W. Dodd The good news is my neighbors were able to move back in and all their belongings are back in the house. Thank you to everyone that reached out to offer assistance and advice. He broke down and said it makes him feel good that there are still people out there that really care. Thank you again.

I keep telling all of you that this is going to happen to a lot of people and continue to grow... As long as the corrupt politicians keep on raising taxes there will be a time even you can't afford things... Then what??? Just becasue you can afford it right now doesn't mean you will in the next 5 years...

But you all seem to love taxes and fees so what is the point of even telling you... You will eventually experience this and then I will say like the rst of you do, good one less person to suck of the system right??? Even though that has noting to do with it!!!!

As a former landlord, i know for a fact that the tenants had several warnings before a judge would sign off on an eviction.
Advice to tenants: don't ignore things- it only makes it worse. Find help BEFORE you end up in court. Once the sheriff shows up, it's too late.
Yes, it is sad, but my guess is that the landlord was already owed 2-3 months past-due rent. Can anyone else go that long without a paycheck?

I think that sometimes people are afraid to reach out to the services that may be available to them in a time of need because they have been taught to take care of their own and not take hands outs. However that is what this programs are for not to be used as entitlements but to help hard working people when they struggle from time time. WE have been taught is is shameful and embarrassing but trust their are a lot of elderly in this situation because they lost their homes during the housing collapse and now live in rentals where more times than not the monthly payment is higher than their mortgage and this happens too often.

It takes a very long time to evict someone. They were not late by a day or two. It was probably months and months of being late.

I agree typically you will get several notice and a court date before this happens unless you rent from one of the most used rental agencies who have one of the most loaded contracts I have ever seen. If your late is the 5th they file on the 6th. For people who work pay check to paycheck on the biweekly sometimes that is hard.

I just had a friend get evicted and I asked him he they went to court and he said no. I said I might have been able to help you prior to that but you are right once the order has been signed its gonna happen.

Elderly, or not, if you don't pay your rent, eventually you can't stay there anymore. Nobody owes anybody a place to live, for free (or a promise to pay somewhere indefinitely down the road). Renting a home is a business transaction, nothing more, nothing less. You renege on the terms of the lease, the lease says what will happen. Get help if you need it, but don't blame the landlord. It's his business (for a profit) to be a landlord.

Profiting off of housing rental should be illegal.

This is not true. You can have someone evicted in as little as 30 days. It depends ONLY on 2 things. How quick a landlord acts when rent is late or some other breach of the lease occurs. The other thing is how quick a hearing is scheduled. On the shore it's fairly quick a matter of a few weeks. This is true throughout most of the state since many areas and Baltimore have exclusive "rent" counts.

And remember everyone, Salisbury IS NOT a friendly town - money hungry slum lords do all they can to reel you in to rent from them, then when times may get a little hard for someone, well too bad. Sometimes people have to make a choice: do I pay rent, do I eat, do I get my medicine, etc., etc., and sometimes medication for a month is more important than rent. Not saying it's right to not pay your rent, just a fact. Don't think slumlords have ever been in the position to have to make these kind of decisions and hopefully they never will be, but they can certainly listen to their tenants and see what the circumstances may be. Rant over.

Some landlords do not do things the by the books. We all are probably one pay check away from losing our home. Whats sad is the assistance seems to be in the wrong place for the the wrong people

Anonymous said...

Yup and then all of the sudden they have the money to pay when they realize the owner isn't playing their games.

8:25 people that have never been landlords have no idea.

Someone please smack the hell out of 9:58!! I am not going to say anymore.

His landlord was probably John ' The Snake' Cannon.

I'm just going to say it's wonderful people were willing to help them. Jesus said love my neighbor. Some people really do that. Some people just judge and run their mouth.

8:25 is/was more than likely a slumlord. You know, the kind who rent homes they wilderness good enough to park their cars in. YOU are the problem in this city!

Mr. Dodd is a good man. Obviously more compassionate than many of the heartless goofballs commenting on here.

I think 8:25 made a very good point.

This is not true at all. A landlord ONLY needs to give one notice/warning to a tenant and give them 30 day. Throughout my life myself or my family has owned 100's of rental properties both residential and commercial.

Millions of dollars sitting in accounts of united way and community foundation can't they help?

Maybe Oak Ridge will make the K-Mart into a shelter.

Larry I'm sure you won't mind if they move in with you.
