Sole Survivor In Texas Shooting Looks For Hope Amid Her Horror

Cassidy Stay has seen the worst -- the brutal killings of her parents and siblings, ages 4 to 13, in their Texas home.

On Saturday, the 15-year-old quoted Dumbledore, the wise man from the Harry Potter series, in hopes of finding some good amid the horror.

"Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times," Cassidy said, citing J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," "if one only remembers to turn on the light."

The remarks -- at a public memorial for her family -- were the teenager's first public comments since she emerged as the lone survivor from the carnage in her family's Spring home.

On This Day, (yesterday) 210 Years Ago, The US Vice President Killed The Ex-Treasury Secretary

Douglas Hamilton, left, a fifth-great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton and Antonio Burr, right, a descendant of Aaron Burr's cousin, fire their pistols during the re-enactment marking the 200th anniversary of the Hamilton-Burr duel, in Weehawken, N.J., Sunday, July 11, 2004

On July 11, 1804, two leading U.S. politicians overreacted to personal insults between them. That doesn't sound out of the ordinary considering the divisiveness among politicians in today's government, except then-Vice President Aaron Burr and former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton settled the issue with an armed duel to the death.

Since both New Yorkers belonged to opposing political parties, Burr a Republican and Hamilton a Federalist, they developed an adversarial political relationship, according to the Library of Congress. The two were at odds in the controversial presidential election of 1800, when Hamilton helped secure Thomas Jefferson's victory at the expense of Burr, who became vice president. (In those days, the runner-up in presidential elections became vice president.) Hamilton wrote then that Burr's "public principles have no other spring or aim than his own aggrandizement," according to David Stewart, writing for the Constitution Daily blog.

Obama DOJ To Investigate 'Racist' Independence Day Outhouse Float

On the prodding of angry Democrats, the Department of Justice has decided to step into the controversy over a float that was part of the Norfolk, Nebraska, Independence Day parade, Omaha.com reported on Friday. The float consisted of a zombie-like mannequin standing near an outhouse labeled “Obama Presidential Library.”

The float drew accusations of racism from members of the state Democratic Party, CBS said. According to the Omaha World-Herald, neither the float nor the truck pulling it identified a sponsor.

As a result, the DOJ sent a member of its Community Relations Service team -- a group that involves itself in discrimination issues. On Thursday, the unidentified team member met with representatives of the local NAACP, the mayor of Norfolk and The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the organization that organized the parade.

Judge orders feds to find Lerner’s hard drive

Demands info needed to find missing emails

WASHINGTON –
Federal judges have delivered a one-two punch to the midsection of the IRS on consecutive days in court.

As WND reported on Thursday, a federal judge ordered the IRS to explain, under oath, exactly what happened to the missing emails of former tax-exempt division chief Lois Lerner.

Friday, a different judge in the same District Court ordered the IRS to explain, under oath, what happened to Lerner’s computer hard drive.

IRS Commissioner John Koskinen testified before Congress last month that the hard drive was recycled, and presumably destroyed.

U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton wants the IRS to tell him whatever they know about the hard drive that Lerner says malfunctioned and lost two years of emails sought by congressional investigators, and he wants those answers in just one week.

NAACP Protests Acquittal Of Glen Burnie Man Who Shot And Killed Alleged Intruder

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) — The acquittal of a Glen Burnie man who shot and killed a man the defense claims was an intruder in his home is sparking protest.

Pat Warren reports the Anne Arundel County NAACP says the shooting may have been racially motivated.

A protest Thursday outside the Anne Arundel County courthouse in Annapolis centers on the case of Matthew Pinkerton–a Glen Burnie man acquitted in the shooting death of Kendall Green.

“We want the federal government to look into this,” said one protester.

DISGRACEFUL: Obama Sending "Pink Slips" to Soldiers Fighting in Afghanistan

If there was any doubt thatPresident Obama has no respect for the military, his latest actions should surely settle the dispute.

Obama has become notorious for his distrust and overall disdain for the armed forces, demonstrating his feelings by attempting to cut their pay raises, ignoring the VA scandal, and leaving one Marine to rot in a Mexican prison.

The president’s disrespect hasn’t gone unnoticed by men and women in uniform.

The unidentified woman’s husband passed away in March, so this year, her daughter volunteered to keep the tradition alive and taker her mother out for an anniversary meal, KSDK-TV reported.

Their meal proceeded as normal, until the waitress asked if they were celebrating anything special. According to the daughter’s brother, who posted the story on Reddit, his sister explained her parents’ tradition.

Democrats Threaten to Scuttle Deal to Deport Migrant Kids

Outlines of a possible compromise that would more quickly deport minors arriving from Central America emerged Thursday as part of President Barack Obama's $3.7 billion emergency request to address the immigration crisis on the nation's southern border.

Republicans demanded speedier deportations, which the White House initially had supported but left out of its proposal after complaints from immigrant advocates and some Democrats. On Thursday, the top House and Senate Democrats pointedly left the door open to them.

Man Was Allegedly in the Middle of Kidnapping a Little Girl When He Was Hit With a Punch He Never Saw Coming

When a man allegedly attempted to abduct a 12-year-old girl in Kearns, Utah, he wasn’t ready for the swift punch to the back of the head that he received. The punch came from the young girl’s teenage aunt, who stands only 5-feet tall.

After taking a swing at the much larger assailant, she says the man dropped the 12-year-old girl and fled in his vehicle. The incident apparently occurred in the middle of the day at 2:30 p.m. as the girls were walking home from a nearby park.

“I punched him in the back of the head because he wasn’t facing me. But as soon as I hit him he dropped her and then he went into his vehicle, and when she was on the ground… I picked her up and started running,” the 18-year-old aunt told KTSU-TV. “Me and my niece ran!”

RedOwl Analytics: Doing the Things that Work

This week I visited RedOwl Analytics, a homegrown Baltimore company with 25 employees that turns big data into smart solutions for other businesses and organizations. Last year, judges selected RedOwl as the best business in the IT category at Maryland’s 2013 InvestMaryland Challenge, awarding the company $100,000 to help them grow. Here in Maryland we know that early investments spur innovation and create jobs, and with the help of InvestMaryland, RedOwl hopes to double their workforce over the next few years.

Progress is a choice. Job creation is a choice. And the economy grows from the middle up and the middle out, not from the top down. That’s why, in the wake of the Great Recession, the O’Malley-Brown administration has focused on helping small businesses like RedOwl in the fight to recover all the jobs lost during the downturn. We set a goal to recover those jobs by the end of FY2014, and in April this year, we surpassed it.

The progress we’ve made, we’ve made by choosing to do the things that work; investing in education and infrastructure, and building innovative, common platforms for business success like InvestMaryland. Since May 2013, Maryland has created 22,100 jobs, with 83% (18,300) of those jobs in the private sector. And our unemployment rate is nearly 10% lower than the national average.

RedOwl Analytics is just the tip of the iceberg. The company is just one of the growing businesses in Maryland that has led the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to name Maryland #1 in the nation for entrepreneurship and innovation for three consecutive years and #1 in the nation for STEM jobs.

And even though we’ve surpassed our goal to restore jobs lost, we must continue to invest in the things that work as we look to the future. Together, we will build a stronger One Maryland.

Md. Recommends Tight Restrictions On Gas Drilling

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- State regulators are recommending what they call some of the nation's tightest environmental restrictions on shale gas drilling in western Maryland.

The departments of the environment and natural resources jointly released an interim report Friday on "best practices" for safe drilling in Maryland's portion of the Marcellus shale.

It generally recommends no drilling within 2,000 feet of private drinking water wells and at least 1,000 feet from public drinking water sources to prevent contamination by methane leaking from drill sites.

Polar Vortex Look-Alike To Bring Unseasonable Temperatures

It's the dog days of summer, but don't tell that to Mother Nature. A polar vortex look-alike is headed toward the Eastern U.S. and will bring unseasonable temperatures across the area early next week.

The blast of cold air is expected to move in from the Gulf of Alaska, similar to the Polar Vortex that swept the area in January.

"When you put the maps side-by-side, it does have a similar look to what we saw over the wintertime. Just remember though, air masses are different temperatures even if they come from the same place," says ABC7 Meteorologist Brian van de Graaff.

Virginia county takes on federal government that ‘refuses to do its job’

For Corey Stewart, chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, the border crisis isn’t something far away — or something new.

This week, the Prince William County Board of Supervisors voted 5-1 to file a request under the Freedom of Information Act demanding to know the whereabouts of the roughly 7,000 illegal immigrants who have committed crimes, been arrested by county police and been placed in the hands of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement since 2008.

This isn’t the first attempt Stewart, a Republican, and his colleagues have made to get the federal government to remove individuals who are threatening and damaging their community.

In 2008, county police began asking the legal status of everyone arrested for a crime. When illegal immigrant Carlos Montano killed a nun in 2010 after being previously arrested for DUIs and released by ICE, county officials began to go after the feds with full force of the law.

“This is an unnecessary threat to public safety,” Stewart told Watchdog.org. “You’re never going to be able to get rid of all the criminals in the community. You can’t keep people in jail indefinitely. But when you have the option to remove someone who you know is dangerous, it’s an unnecessary risk to public safety and it’s just because the federal government refuses to do its job.”

The Polar Vortex Is Back... In The Middle Of July

While every single economist and "straight to CNBC" pundit was quick to blast the atrocious economic performance in Q1 as solely due to the "harsh weather", what has emerged in various retail earnings reports so far in Q2 is that, drumroll, they lied. In fact, as one after another "stunned" retailer admits, the depressed spending observed during Q1 continued, if not deteriorated even further, in the second quarter. Which means only one thing, the same thing we said back in January: as a result of Obamacare, the declining credit impulse resulting from the Fed's tapering, and a ongoing contraction in global trade as the world slides back into recession, the US economy is on the verge of stalling and may well enter into a tailspin if one or more exogenous events take place in a centrally-planned world that is priced to perfection.

To be sure, one of the potential scapegoats we highlighted previously was the replacement of the polar vortex with what we dubbed the "solar vortex", ala El Nino, which as we further reported, has already been blamed in advance by the Bank of Japan for a spending collapse set to take place in the second half of 2014, the year when the Japanese economy now almost certainly re-enters recession.

Let’s Get Rid Of Offensive Things

I apologize in advance for some of the terminology in this column. Much of it may make you angry, upset or downright sick to your stomach. It’s not that I use the name “Washington Redskins,” it’s that I talk about the Internal Revenue Service on page 2. Again, apologies.

This week the American people were taught a valuable lesson – never underestimate the willingness of white progressives to be offended on behalf of people who aren’t and to impose their will on those who didn’t ask for it. (What tribe do you suspect these protesters are from?) The U.S. Trade and Patent Office canceled trademarks held by the Washington Redskins because they determined the trademark, issued by the same government that just voided them, was for an offensive term. This decision will be appealed, and Redskins owner Dan Snyder probably will win.

But this case was never about the trademark, it was about publicity for the progressives’ word police to apply pressure on Snyder to change a name they don’t want to exist. They don’t really give a damn, mind you – Snyder is just a convenient high-profile target in their attempt to control our language. If you control the language – what words can be used (Redskins) or their definitions (marriage) – it makes it that much easier to control the people.

This latest charge is being led by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who took to the floor of the Senate to attack the name and lie about the ramifications of the ruling. Reid said anyone could now start printing their own Redskins merchandise and profit from it, which is a flat-out lie. The common law trademark remains in place no matter what the government does. Harry Reid, a lawmaker and lawyer, was openly advising people they could freely break the law.

Delaware State Police is Providing a Scam Alert Advisory

Dover, DE - Delaware State Police is providing a scam alert advisory. This is a general alert which covers any part of the State of Delaware.

Troopers are warning renters to be on the lookout for scammers on Craigslist, Zillow.com, and other online classifieds when searching for a home. Many prospective renters find homes through online classifieds. Sadly, some people who think they have found the perfect home online are being set up by scammers. Phony ads for rental properties across the state are cropping up, and are specifically aimed at stealing money from unsuspecting renters.

Renters typically fall victim to this scam after responding to an online classified for a rental property. Victims say they were told by the supposed landlord that they needed to wire a specified amount of money as a deposit and then they would receive the keys to the rental home. When the victims asked if they could check out the property first, the landlords claimed that they were out of the country and could not show the house. Often the real homeowners have their house up for sale, not rent, and had pictures posted online that the scammers could steal for their bogus listings.

Troopers advises renters of the following red flags to look out for:

• The deal sounds too good to be true. Scammers will often list a rental for a very low price to lure in victims. Find out how comparable listings are priced, and if the rental comes in suspiciously low, walk away.
• The landlord is located elsewhere and prefers to communicate via e-mail. Scammers might say they have just been relocated out of the country for a job or missionary work - don’t believe it.
• The landlord requires a substantial deposit before handing over the keys or even showing the home. Don’t pay any money before inspecting the home, inside and out.
• The landlord asks the renter to wire money through wire transfer services such as Western Union or Money Gram. Money sent via wire transfer service is extremely difficult to retrieve and once the scammers have picked it up; there is little recourse, if any, for getting your money back.

These scams are difficult to investigate. They will target persons of all age groups. Delaware State Police is asking citizens to remember the tips previously mentioned in order to not become a victim of one of these scam artists.

Carroll Co. Officials Push Back On Shelter For Immigrant Children

Carroll County officials swiftly voiced opposition Friday to news that the federal government is eyeing a former military property near Westminster as a potential shelter for immigrant children — underscoring the challenge the Obama administration faces as it tries to manage a surge of new arrivals.

A day after federal officials notified local leaders it would conduct a preliminary assessment of the vacant Army Reserve Center, the Carroll County Board of Commissioners convened an emergency meeting and, along with Republican Rep. Andy Harris, pledged to resist efforts to use the site.

"Carroll County will not become a repository for Obama's failed immigration policies," said Commissioner Richard Rothschild. He said the idea is "in no way, shape or form approved by the governing body of this county."

The reaction in Carroll County, one of Maryland's Republican strongholds, comes as federal agencies struggle to keep up with an influx of unaccompanied minors — mostly from Central America — who are flooding across the southwestern border.

Many children crossing US border illegally will get to stay, data suggests

New data from immigration courts, as well as individual testimony, indicates that many of the thousands of children undertaking a perilous journey across the U.S. border from Central America will get to stay, despite warnings to the contrary.

The Wall Street Journal reports that data, as well as interviews with the children and their advocates, show that very few children are sent home, with many being allowed to stay in the U.S. for years, if not permanently.

According to Justice Department figures seen by The Wall Street Journal, in fiscal year 2013, immigration judges ordered 3,525 children to be deported, with an additional 888 allowed to return home voluntarily. These numbers pale in comparison with the number of juveniles apprehended, amounting to between 23,000 and 47,000 children apprehended annually in each of the last five years.

The reasons for the children staying included backlogged courts, winning the right to stay, and minors simply ignoring orders to appear in court.

Military Draft?

The Selective Service is apologizing to 14,000 Pennsylvania men who got reminders to register for the military draft. The agency has been fielding calls from bewildered relatives because the men are a bit old for a draft. They were born between 1893 and 1897, making them more than 100 years old. The error happened when the State Department of Motor Vehicles mistakenly sent the agency a batch of records of men born between 1993 and 1997 and failed to specify the century. The Selective Service did not catch the mistake because it saw only the last two digits of the birth years.

Homeland Security Going Broke Over Immigration Crisis

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson says the immigration crisis on the Texas border is bleeding the agency dry. He tells a Senate hearing, Immigration and Customs Enforcement will run out of money by mid-August unless Congress helps. Customs and Border Protection's money will last until mid-September. The administration has asked for $3.7 billion. Without the emergency dollars, Johnson says DHS would be forced to shift money from other components, threatening the department's ability to operate. Republicans want the money tied to a rapid process for returning unaccompanied children to their home countries.

Md. Student Test Scores Drop Significantly As State Shifts To Common Core

Reading and math scores on state tests for Maryland elementary and middle school students have dropped to their lowest levels in seven years, according to a Washington Post analysis of 2014 test data released Friday. Some Maryland officials expected the drop because schools are transitioning to new national academic standards that do not align with the tests.

State and county educators said the across-the-board decline on the final Maryland School Assessment (MSA) was largely a result of the state’s move to a curriculum aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The new curriculum shifts some academic topics to different grade levels, especially in math, making the MSA obsolete.

Students’ scores had been steadily inching up until 2013, when there were sharp declines in reading and math scores, a slide that continued this year. In 2014, overall proficiency scores in reading and math among elementary students fell 5.2 percentage points to 80 percent proficiency. Middle-schoolers fared worse — 71.4 percent proficiency, a drop of 6.5 percentage points. Drops in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties roughly mirrored the state averages.

One Of The NSA's Original Whistleblowers Says The Goal Is 'Total Population Control'

“At least 80% of fibre-optic cables globally go via the US”, Binney said. “This is no accident and allows the US to view all communication coming in. At least 80% of all audio calls, not just metadata, are recorded and stored in the US. The NSA lies about what it stores.”

HISTORICAL COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER 7-12-14

Jackson’s Shirt Factory

Another Salisbury building that has been relegated to the sands of time is the old three-story Jackson shirt factory. The building has an interesting history and story behind it.

It was built in the beginning of the Twentieth Century by the Jacksons across from their mill and lumber works. The mill took up the area that is now thePeninsula Regional Medical Center. The story goes that the men at the mill were complaining that their wages were too low to raise a family. So theJacksons built the shirt factory and put their wives to work to earn more money. As the above post cards show, it had many names. First, it was the Jackson and Gutman Shirt Company. Then it became the Jackson, Gutman and Lane Shirt Company. Finally, it was the Jackson and Weisbach Shirt Company. The Jackson name was always first because they owned it. The secondary names were the managers of the shirt factory.

The shirt-making operation fell into bankruptcy, and the building remained empty for many years. The bank tried to sell it to Martin & Schwartz but they declined, and only after being offered Norman Holland’s new building on Mill Streetdid they decide to move their operation from Buffalo, NY to Salisbury. Mr. Holland had built the building as a warehouse for his concrete business, but he saw the need for Salisbury to acquire a new business. So, the shirt factory building sat empty. It was considered an economic white elephant. It was used for awhile by the McCloskey-Grant Company from Philadelphia. Then, when Lowe’s moved to Salisbury, they used it until they built a new store on the corner of Old Ocean City Road and Moss Hill Lane.

From that point on, the old shirt factory building sat empty until it was demolished a few years ago. A medical facility and parking lot now occupy the spot on the S-curve of S. Salisbury Boulevard.

Riding around Salisbury, my observation is that many old business establishments are now part of the medical industry or are some bureaucratic entity – neither of which contributes to the financial future of Salisbury.

Man Arrested For Swiping Lion Sculpture From Nearby Hotel

OCEAN CITY — An Ocean City man was arrested on theft and malicious destruction of property charges this week after swiping a large concrete lion from the front of a downtown hotel and defacing the sculpture.

Around 2:15 a.m. on Monday, Ocean City Police responded to a residence on 7th Street and Edgewater Ave. for a reported noise violation. As the officers were walking up the steps to the apartment unit, they observed a four-foot tall white ornate statue sitting in the middle of the living room. The Colonel Arms Luxury Suites owner had reported the large, heavy statue missing a day earlier after noticing it had been taken around 11:30 a.m. on July 6.

The officers approached the front door of the unit and asked for the identification of the individuals on the lease to begin processing the noise complaint. The officers also told the occupants they wanted to know how and where the stolen lion statue arrived at their unit and who was responsible. The tenants told police they had a party the night before and a couple of intoxicated guests had brought the lion to their apartment.

It hardly sounds funny, but performed by John Cleese and Michael Palin it is regarded by Monty Python fans as one of the greatest comedy sketches of all time.

LG Introduces House Arrest Wristbands For Small Children

We adults enjoy quantifying our every move with wearable technology like pedometer wristbands and other fitness-tracking gadgets, so why leave our kids out of the fun? Yesterday, LG announced that they’re introducing a wristband for kids that’s a hybrid of a tracking anklet used by the criminal justice system and your child’s first cell phone.

It’s not a bad idea, exactly: there are just two problems with the device. It’s bulky and just a little creepy. The GPS-tracking aspect isn’t the creepy part. A tracking device on your child can mean giving them a little more freedom, knowing that they can be easily found within the device’s Android app.

How To Fight The Ex-Im Bank

In politics, words can be dangerous weapons. The terms we use can either accurately or inaccurately reflect what the government is up to. George Orwell understood this better than anyone, and his essay “Politics and the English Language” is a great denouncement of the abuse of words at the hands of the political class. Though he was writing at the end of World War II, Orwell’s criticism still rings true today. In the age of around-the-clock news and easily digestible sound bites, political speech and writing have largely become “the defense of the indefensible.”

The ongoing debate in the United States over the merits of the Export-Import Bank – a government institution that makes loans to governments and private companies abroad to boost domestic exports – exemplifies this tug-of-war between language. The D.C. lobbying cabal and its puppets in Congress are staunchly defending the institution as a job-creator and economic necessity. A handful of free market organizations are attacking the bank for being a deliberate form of crony capitalism. For years, the intrepid Tim Carney of the Washington Examiner has led the fight to dismantle the Ex-Im Bank, calling out the unfair advantage given to companies like Boeing through government-backed underwriting. His efforts finally appear to be gaining steam. Newly elected House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy has indicated his support for allowing the charter of the Bank to expire come the end of September. All the lower chamber of Congress has to do is sit on their laurels and the relic of the New Deal era will finally begin to unravel.

Of course, special interests in Washington aren’t going down without a fight. A well-financed lobbying effort is pulling levers behind the scenes to make sure the Bank remains functional. The goal is to convince the American people that the Ex-Im Bank promotes the national interest. Using buzz phrases like “investment at home” and “creating jobs,” the strategy is to obfuscate their true agenda: preserving the trough from which they feed.
