Thats all they do...they sit and talk, two and three cars pulled up together...esp on Eastern Shore drive alot.. Tax $ hard at work...

I don't have a problem with that. They get paid to be available. What else do you expect them to be doing.

I would hope that part of their job is to familiarize themselves with mall employees. If this was a foot/beat cop, would it also be a problem? If they were chatting around the hat kiosk, would that be a problem? Non-event.

They oughtta be hanging out by the "Cash For Gold" kiosk. You know someone's gonna hit that!

NOOOOOOO , supervision!

Maybe they were on a call. Did you stop and think they were investigating/getting info? Just check the SPD web site to see if any calls were from Zales about that time frame. Everyone wants to bash the cops but these are just pictures. I could take pictures of someone and with out anymore info, you would think they were up to no good either. If there were no calls at Zales, then clearly you have deat beat cops wasting tax money and should be written up.

who cares. i had to pick up my teenage daughter and her friends at the mall that evening, and was glad to see the police anywhere in the mall.

Don i agree with you.Come on people, let try this,, you are asleep in the middle of the night,, you hear noises outside, someone trying to break in,,,, be honest, you are going to call the police, now they are you best friends, because they may have just saved your life or you childs life,,,
for all we know, they was some activity going on that there were involved in and gathering facts.

I agree with Don. They have to be friendly and meet the merchants. Also how do you know they were not there watching any how? Besides the Mall Security is a joke. My great grandmother could do a better job and not use a Segway. That is a crock and a waste of money.

Not going to bash a cop for doing overtime at the mall. Our cops are still underpaid.

Question I have is why did you call him a "former" detective? Did he get busted down in rank?

Anonymous said...

He is not a former detective, he is a current one who has to work over time since he is underpaid. It is their job to be get to know their surroundings! And if that person who was cowardly hiding to take pictures was so concerned about his tax money why didn't he approach the officers to ask what exactly they were doing instead of assuming. We know what assuming does people, come on now!

Im guessing theres a cute girl working at Zales and like 98% of men would,he was standing there talking sh$t to her.Makes me feel safe at the mall....NOT!

OMG! Cops talking to store merchants while on duty! What a disgrace! Oh yah I forgot, they are mindless employees for the City of Salisbury and should not talk to the local merchants. Isn't that what "PR" (Public Relations) is all about, getting out of your car and talking to people? Maybe we should pull them out of the schools as well, we don't want them talking to the kids on tax dollar money.
And how much does ones' tax dollar contribute to the police department? Just curious? Next time there is a robbery, why don't some of you be the first to respond. No, instead you whine about the police departments, but you'll be the first to call them if you need them. If you think they can't do their job, then do it yourself. Maybe then we can really downsize the police department.

blutojthetotmom... nah, there are no cute girls who work at zales. if he was looking for some action, don't you think he'd be down the mall a bit in victoria's a secret? i would! those girls are smokin'!

Just thought I would let you know that the tax payers don't pay overtime for SPD while working at the mall. The Centre of Salisbury does. Oh, and they want them to talk with the employees, and "mingle" at the shops. They are there for back up, and to deter crime but their presence. There is mall security as well, remember?

Thanks 1:23 you beat me to it... any time a company requests law enforcement patrol like this it comes out of THEIR pocket, not the taxpayers. Cops regularly monitor the movie theater and mall on weekend nights, and even Applebees. OC cops sit in mcdonalds at night in the summer time. The business pays for this service.

I was there last night & saw 2 officers down by the food court. It's a shame that an older male worker at the calendar kiosk had to chase away a group of teens all but blocking the walk way by his area.

I find it amazing at just how many teens are allowed at the mall by themselves. When I was growing up, you can bet that if I was at the mall, my parent(s) were there too, and not too far away....my how times have changed.

Does anyone really know whether they were just shooting the sh!t or whether there was a legitimate reason for talking there. She may have been telling them about something intuitive that she saw or picked up on. Repoire is important.

Put the badge on and carry a gun and see how life is that way. Everyone jumps to conclusions. These cop risk there lives every day by just putting a uniform on.

I don't care if he and his partner are standing there picking their nose. It makes some people feel a little bit safer when they see an armed officer as opposed to an security guard armed with pepper spray (if that) on a run-away segway zipping by. And for the shop owner who had to shew the teenagers from his kiosk, that's what security is for.

Better yet since the (maryland) government seems not to have a problem with people arming themselves for the purpose of stealing maybe they won't have a problem with the law bidding citizens arming themselves so the officers don't need to work overtime.

absolutely. i've been armed for awhile. hope i never have to use it but, don't start nothing and there won't be nothing.

...and the deputies earn overtime at the movies, who's pitchin' a bitch about that? IT'S PAID FOR BY THE BUSINESSES, NOT THE TAXPAYERS. There was a big write up in the Daily Waste of Times about this and about how the city graciously "allowed" officers to work mall overtime funded by the mall. The article was in the late summer/early fall.
