Delmar Fire Department Is Smokin

Yesterday the Delmar Fire Department went door to door throughout the community giving away smoke detectors like there's no tomorrow.

The Fire Chief told me they had handed out more than 100 Smoke Detectors and he couldn't even count how many batteries that were dead and replaced by the Fire Department. He was saddened by the amount of homes they entered with FAMILIES, (small children) and not one single Smoke Detector!

I didn't get the chance to ask but I will follow up today and find out just how many of these properties were rental units? It's a sad day when so many people are that stupid that they don't even have a Smoke Detector in their homes. Considering the Fire Department gives them out free and small children are so educated in School about such matters, this is ridiculous. IMO, this is also why every town and city across America should have laws allowing an inspection for such and fines to those who do not have them.

You should be aware that those freebies do not comply with the Sussex County building codes when it comes to single family dwellings.

Anytime you get a building permit for anything in your house in Sussex county, whether it be a new house, or an existing one, you are required to have a hard-wired battery back-up smoke detector present in each bedroom before the inspection will pass.

The freebies, while they may be a good thing for those who have none are not acceptable by the building inspectors.

Thank You Delmar! It is truly sad how many "grown ups" are less educated than their children. Some simply aren't educated while others don't care about anyone but themselves! Thank you for keeping our "little ones" safe, for now. It's honorable and goes towards "a community raising it's children".

Of course it is nice that a bunch of people got free smoke detectors. But then, isn't this the kind of thing you would expect from a fire department? I'm not trying to be negative, but isn't it funny how we all feel so warm and fuzzy about something as simple as the fire department helping poor people with free smoke detectors?
