Real estate heir and suspected serial killer Robert Durst will spend seven years and a month in prison after he pleaded guilty to a weapons charge.
U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt approved the plea deal on Wednesday.
Durst came to that agreement in February shortly after he seemingly admitted to murder in an HBO documentary. And as the Two-Way has reported:
"Durst has waived extradition to Los Angeles to stand trial for the 2000 murder of his friend Susan Berman. Durst is suspected of killing her because he feared Berman could connect him to the disappearance of his first wife in 1982.
"Durst's longtime lawyer — who successfully defended Durst in 2003 after his client admitted killing and dismembering a neighbor in self-defense — says the California case will be challenging."

Most High School Seniors Aren't College Or Career Ready, 'Nation's Report Card' Says
The latest results of the test known as the Nation's Report Card are in. They cover high school seniors, who took the test in math and reading last year. The numbers are unlikely to give fodder either to educational cheerleaders or alarmists: The average score in both subjects was just one point lower in 2015 compared with the last time the test was given, in 2013. This tiny downtick was statistically significant in mathematics, but not for the reading test.
But even though the changes are small, chances are you're going to be hearing about them in a lot of places.
Why is this test so widely reported on, widely cited and widely debated? And how does it line up with common-sense yardsticks of how students are doing? Let's take a closer look.
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP, has become a standardized test that even some critics of standardized tests rely upon. One big reason: It's a research project conducted by the U.S. Department of Education, not a state accountability test.

Supreme Court May Be Leaning Toward Voiding Ex-Va. Governor's Corruption Conviction
The Supreme Court appears to be leaning in favor of reversing the corruption conviction of former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, based on Wednesday's oral arguments.
At the case's core is how to determine a clean "official act" from a corrupt one, and where the line is.
Justice Elena Kagan said during oral arguments that the court is concerned both about overzealous prosecutors and giving a free pass to corrupt politicians.
Many of the justices — both liberal and conservative — appeared dissatisfied with the standard that the government is currently using to seek convictions on public corruption charges.
Justice Stephen Breyer said he doesn't want a situation where all of the power is in the hands of the Justice Department to decide who is prosecuted for a felony and who is not.

FAIL: Busted Wind Turbines Give College Whopping Negative 99.14% Return On Investment
Lake Land College recently announced plans to tear down broken wind turbines on campus, after the school got $987,697.20 in taxpayer support for wind power.
The turbines were funded by a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, but the turbines lasted for less than four years and were incredibly costly to maintain.
“Since the installation in 2012, the college has spent $240,000 in parts and labor to maintain the turbines,” Kelly Allee, Director of Public Relations at Lake Land College, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.
The college estimates it would take another $100,000 in repairs to make the turbines function again after one of them was struck by lightning and likely suffered electrical damage last summer. School officials’ original estimates found the turbine would save it $44,000 in electricity annually, far more than the $8,500 they actually generated. Under the original optimistic scenario, the turbines would have to last for 22.5 years just to recoup the costs, not accounting for inflation. If viewed as an investment, the turbines had a return of negative 99.14 percent.
“While they have been an excellent teaching tool for students, they have only generated $8,500 in power in their lifetime,” she said. “One of the reasons for the lower than expected energy power is that the turbines often need to be repaired. They are not a good teaching tool if they are not working.”

Congressmen Question FDA on Loosening of Abortion-Inducing Drug Standards
(CNSNews.com) – Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) and Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) sent a letter Monday, together with 73 of their colleagues to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Robert Califf, expressing concern and seeking information regarding the recent loosening of regulation of the abortion-inducing drug Mifeprex or RU-486.
The FDA announced a change in their guidelines for Mifeprex in March. The new guidelines reduce the dosage from 600 milligrams to 200 milligrams, decrease the number of required doctor’s visits from three to two, and allow the pill to be taken later in pregnancy, at 10 weeks of pregnancy from 7 weeks.
“We are deeply disappointed to learn that you have loosened FDA standards governing use of the abortion drug mifepristone, also referred to as Mifeprex or RU-486,” the lawmakers wrote. “This powerful abortion drug has been associated with serious adverse events including hemorrhaging, severe infections and even deaths of mothers who have taken it.”
“The Obama Administration’s gift to the abortion industry disregards the safety and lives of women.."

Protesters Pepper Spray Trump Supporters, Hitting 8-Year-Old Girl
Anaheim, CA — Supporters and opponents of Donald Trump clashed outside City Hall, and five people, including two little girls, were pepper-sprayed by a demonstrator during the heated confrontation, police said.
No serious injuries and no arrests were reported in Tuesday’s clash as about 50 people confronted each other in the Orange County community.
Backers waving U.S. flags and pro-Trump signs were met by opponents and a shouting match began before a City Council meeting where an anti-Trump resolution had been proposed that the council eventually chose to take no action on.
At one point, an opponent unleashed a hand-held pepper-spray device on the pro-Trump crowd.
Five people, including two girls ages 8 and 11, were exposed to the eye-stinging spray, police Sgt. Daron Wyatt said. Three were treated at the scene by paramedics.
The man fled, but police were looking for him, Wyatt said.

Not Drug Money, Just Christian Cash for Orphans
We’ve previously noted how the practice of civil asset forfeiture needs serious reform because it’s little more than an unconstitutional windfall for law enforcement. Jason Snead of the Heritage Foundation defines forfeiture as “a policy that enables law enforcement authorities to seize property or currency if they suspect it is involved in, or is the result of, a crime.” With that, we now offer the latest entry in the annals of “justice.”
A 40-year-old Texas man was pulled over in Oklahoma for driving with a busted tail light. Police dogs alerted deputies to a stash of cash (which often bears trace amounts of drugs), so law enforcement escorted the man to the station for further questioning. The man, a refugee from Burma who became a U.S. citizen more than a decade ago, speaks English as a second language, so communication with the deputies wasn’t always clear, but officers found no evidence of any crime — except the mere possession of $53,249 in cash. So they took all of it, marking the receipt “Possession of drug proceeds.” They then let him go, busted tail light and all, though five weeks later, he was finally charged with a felony: “acquir[ing] proceeds from drug activity.”
The worst part is that the cash was earned by a Christian band, of which the Texas man was a part, and the majority of it was earmarked for a religious college in Burma and an orphanage in Thailand. No drugs, just music and charity.

WBOC Said, "Many Consider The Convention Center The Hub Of Ocean City"
We can start with, who are "MANY"? I can tell you, I live in Ocean City and the majority of people I have spoken to are quite upset that they are considering expanding the convention center.
WHY does WBOC refuse to show people who DISAGREE? Oh, that's right. They sell commercials for things like Springfest and many other events. Why bite the hand that feeds you, right?
If you ever wondered WHY SBYNews is so successful, it is because we aren't afraid to tell the TRUTH. We will not allow our our advertisers to direct us in what we will or won't post. Finally, people can publish their honest opinion anonymously. ALL other news sources use Facebook Comment because you must use your real identity. Guess what, you are NOT going to get the TRUTH from people that way in fear of retaliation.
Finally, I think the OCEAN is the HUB OF OCEAN CITY, how about you?

Cruz Doubles Down on Challenge To Trump
Ted Cruz suffered a significant loss to Donald Trump last night, going down in five different states. But the Texas Senator has a slew of favorable primary contests ahead of him, and he's decided that backing down is out of the question. Today, he issued another challenge to GOP frontrunner Donald Trump:
Ted Cruz on Wednesday demanded a debate with Donald Trump and accused the Republican presidential front-runner of trying to avoid campaigning in Indiana by dropping into The Hoosier State "like Mick Jagger."
The demand came hours after Cruz was crushed by Trump in five primary states — mathematically ending his chances of winning the GOP nomination outright — and faced the daunting task of trying to stop the billionaire developer from sweeping next Tuesday’s Indiana primary.
"I believe the people of Indiana deserve a debate. I accepted two debate invitations in Indiana to give Hoosiers the chance to compare and make this choice. I think that is a simple act of respect to the voters," Cruz said at a press conference in Indianapolis.
The Texas senator said he plans to make a "major announcement" at 4 p.m. Wednesday, in which he is expected to name his vice presidential running mate.
As we mentioned yesterday, there's little reason for Trump to debate. Yet Cruz is likely to continue his calls all the way up until the Indiana primary. Will Trump answer Cruz's call for debate, or will he continue to ignore him and urge him to drop out? What do you think?

Shore Craft Beer Fest Comes to Downtown Salisbury
City Seeks Design Submissions for Event Tee Shirts
City Seeks Design Submissions for Event Tee Shirts
Salisbury – Mayor Jake Day is pleased to announce that the City has partnered with Shore Craft Beer and Delmarva Public Radio to present the 2016 Shore Craft Beer Fest and Riverwalk Celebration on Saturday, June 18th in Downtown Salisbury. This one-of-a-kind event will bring music, art, food, and the best craft beer on the peninsula to the City’s beautifully renovated Riverwalk.
Founded in 2014 with the aim of making the Eastern Shore a craft beer destination, Shore Craft Beer have quickly become the peninsula’s most recognizable advocates of all things locally-brewed. For this event they have put together a who’s who lineup of local micro and craft breweries which will serve only locally produced products. The festival will also feature food trucks, live music from the band Eastern Electric, a plein air painting event, pottery throwing, a home brewing tent, and specially brewed Salisbury hometown beer.
Unique to this year’s event will be a ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil and celebrate renovations to Salisbury’s Riverwalk. The soon-to-be-completed $1.5 million update has been underway since the fall, and includes both cosmetic and structural fixes to the 40 year-old pedestrian walkway.
“Shore Craft Beer Fest is a great fit for Downtown Salisbury, and it presents the perfect opportunity for us to cut the ribbon on our beautiful new Riverwalk,” said Mayor Day. “I’m excited to invite residents and visitors to come sample local craft brews and enjoy what we hope will become a summer family tradition in our Downtown.”
To help promote and commemorate the Riverwalk ribbon cutting, the City is seeking design submissions for tee shirts which will be available at the event. Designs must focus primarily on the Riverwalk, but may incorporate the Shore Craft Beer Fest. If you’re artistically inclined (or if you know someone who is), original artwork is due no later than June 1. Submissions can be any medium, any size. Physical works may be mailed to the Mayor’s Office at the address below. To submit your design electronically, email it to cdemone@salisbury.md
Obama vs. the FBI?
As the FBI continues to investigate Hillary Clinton’s illicit private server, speculation grows as to whether the agency will recommend a criminal indictment, and whether the Obama administration’s Justice Department will follow such a recommendation.
If the FBI recommends an indictment, and the Justice Department refuses, it may not be the last we hear of the issue, a senior senator speculates.
The Washington Examiner reports:
The head of the Senate Judiciary Committee said Friday that FBI investigators could leak details of their probe into Hillary Clinton's emails, though he stopped short of saying they should.
"Is there going to be political interference? If there's enough evidence to prosecute, will there be political interference?" Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, asked in remarks delivered before the Des Moines A.M. Rotary club.
"If there's political interference, then I assume that somebody in the FBI is going to leak these reports and it's either going to have an effect politically or it's going to lead to prosecution if there's enough evidence."

BREAKING NEWS: Shots fired after man reportedly threatens to set off bomb at Fox Baltimore station
A man who threatened to set off a bomb in the offices of Fox 45 Baltimore Thursday afternoon, forcing authorities to evacuate the building, walked outside before shots were fired by police and he fell to the ground.
The man's current condition is unclear, and police did not identify him. They told Fox 45 he apparently was hit by bean bag rounds. Reporters said he held an unidentified object in his left hand.
The man wore a white panda suit, a surgical mask and sunglasses. He apparently lit a car on fire in the parking lot before entering the building.

Gingrich to GOP Establishment: 'Get Over It'
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says that Donald Trump's five big wins Tuesday night mean the only thing left for establishment Republicans to do is to "get over it" and accept that Trump will be the GOP nominee.

Just 37% of U.S. High School Seniors Prepared for College Math and Reading
Only 37% of American 12th-graders were academically prepared for college math and reading in 2015, a slight dip from two years earlier, according to test scores released Wednesday.
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the “Nation’s Report Card,” said that share was down from an estimated 39% in math and 38% in reading in 2013.
Educators and policy makers have long lamented that many seniors get diplomas even though they aren’t ready for college, careers or the military. Those who go to college often burn through financial aid or build debt while taking remedial classes that don’t earn credits toward a degree.
Bill Bushaw, executive director of the National Assessment Governing Board, which oversees the test, said the board was pleased that high school graduation rates were rising, but disappointed in the lack of progress in boosting students’ skills and knowledge.
“These numbers aren’t going the way we want,” he said. “We just have to redouble our efforts to prepare our students to close opportunity gaps.”
The biggest problems came at the bottom, with growth in the share of students deemed “below basic” in their abilities. In math, 38% of students were in that group in 2015, compared with 35% two years earlier. In reading, 28% of students were “below basic,” compared with 25%.

Obama's Secret Plan to Place Islamic "Refugees" In Your Neighborhood
World Net Daily has the scoop:
President Obama and Congress have agreed to fund the permanent resettlement of 10,000 Syrian refugees, but the number of Syrians entering the U.S. over the next three years will end up being much larger.
Possibly up to 10 times larger, says one analyst who follows the global refugee movement. And it’s all about to be done under the radar of Congress with nearly zero media coverage.
Fresh evidence to that effect has come from the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees Filippo Grande and a statement by the U.S. State Department. Together, those statements indicate the U.N. has many more Syrians in store for the U.S. than what Obama has publicly acknowledged.
“Often when they talk about numbers it’s a bit opaque,” says Nayla Rush, senior researcher for the Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies. “They want to permanently resettle 480,000 (into countries outside of Syria), but that’s not enough. There will be resettlements but then other routes, ‘alternative safe pathways,’ as stated by the U.N. high commissioner, who is using a new word, ‘pathways.’
“To me this kind of resembles the ‘pathway to citizenship’ (made famous by the 2013 Gang of Eight immigration bill), and they’re applying that now to refugees.”
WND reported earlier this month that the Obama administration has approved a “surge” of Syrian refugees into the U.S., slicing the vetting period from at least 18 months down to just three months.
Rush says, by speeding up the process and diffusing the Syrian entries though a myriad of different immigration programs, the administration hopes to take some of the heat off the refugee resettlement industry while still accomplishing the same mission – bringing more and more Syrian refugees to the U.S.
The entire article is worth a read. But what it points to is Obama's intention to subvert the will of the people, who have told their elected officials in no uncertain terms that they don't want radical Islamists resettled in their country. But by altering the langauge, referring to them as "displaced people," and appealing to the authority of national security agencies and multinational organizations like the UNHCR, he's going to attempt to hoodwink the American public into opening our shores to those who want to do us harm.
Let your elected representatives know you won't stand for this!

House committee votes to require women to register for draft
WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Armed Services Committee approved a measure Wednesday requiring women to register for the military draft, a move that comes just a few months after the Defense Department lifted all gender-based restrictions on front-line combat units.
In a twist that presages how contentious further debate may be, the author of the amendment voted against his own measure. It passed the committee by a vote of 32-30.
Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., a former Marine who served three combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, doesn’t support drafting women into combat and he’s opposed to opening infantry and special operations positions to women. He said he offered the measure to trigger a discussion about how the Pentagon’s decision in December to rescind gender restrictions on military service failed to consider whether the exclusion on drafting women also should be lifted.

State proposes gradual rise in diploma test score standard
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Maryland State Board of Education says it plans to gradually increase the standardized test scores that students must achieve to earn a high school diploma starting next school year.
The agency said Wednesday it will publish the proposed rule soon in the Maryland Register, followed by a 30-day public-comment period.
The class of 2017 will be the first affected. Under the proposal, they would have to get a combined score of 1,450 on 10th-grade English and Algebra I exams from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers.

BREAKING: Obama Approves Plan to Build a Wall
President Barack Obama will build a wall. But it won't be on the border. As NBC Washington reports:
The U.S. Secret Service plans to raise the height of the White House security fence by 5 feet and add a new concrete foundation to reduce the risk of fence-jumpers, according to a copy of an agency report obtained by the News4 I-Team.
The agency, along with the National Park Service, said it intends to begin building a “taller, stronger” fence to protect the White House grounds by 2018.
Details of the plan were included in an audio recording of a briefing made by federal officials, which was released to the I-Team Wednesday. The same briefing is expected to be presented May 5 at a meeting of the National Capital Planning Commission, which must first approve any changes to White House fencing.
“The current fence simply is not adequate for a modern era. We’ve said that before. It is becoming more and more acutely clear that that is in fact the case,” Secret Service official Tom Dougherty said in the briefing to federal officials.
Obama recognizes the value of walls when it comes to his own security, but apparently not when it comes to the American people. Naturally, GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump weighed in:

Three classmates of Delaware teen killed in high school bathroom assault seen as persons of interest, removed from school
The fatal school bathroom assault of a Wilmington, Del., teen will lead to charges for the students involved later this week, police said Monday.
Investigators from the Wilmington Police Department and the state Attorney General’s Office have three persons of interest in the Thursday morning killing of 16-year-old Amy Inita Joyner-Francis at Howard High School of Technology, said police Chief Bobby Cummings.
“One of the things we did not want to do is rush to judgment and press charges that could possibly be overturned,” Cummings said at a town hall meeting Monday night. “I don't know that they truly understood their actions but there are heavy consequences they will have to pay as a result of this.”
CBS News obtained a cellphone picture showing an unidentified girl punching Joyner-Francis, a sophomore known to her friends as often playing the role of peacemaker. Investigators haven’t released any information about what led to the assault, and detectives are looking into social media posts and phone records as they interview witnesses.

Have John & Ted Outstayed their Welcome?
By Thornton Crowe
I don't know about you, but I am getting wary as this primary continues on and one, seemingly without end.
This morning, in one of my rare moments of watching Fox News these days, an interview with Peter Johnson, Jr., Legal Analyst for FNC, caught my eye. What he had to say made perfect sense, so I thought I would share it with you all.
The problem is that both Cruz and Kasich are mathematically eliminated. For example, Trump has over 10 Million Votes. Cruz has just a tad over 6 Million votes and Kasich has under 3. With a 4 Million vote lead, Trump has already gained an advantage with his 78% to the 1237. If Cruz and Kasich combined, they still would not meet Trump's 956 delegates. There are not enough states left for either of them to gain enough delegates. Putting their own egos ahead of the country not only demonstrates their illogical persistence but also proves the reality that neither would make good presidents.
So why do they stay? Here's the link located on Fox News.

Sandwich Sicko Scores Major Win Off Fellow Pedophile
Jared Fogle was once an American icon, known for losing a ton of weight on a diet existing consisting of Subway sandwiches. Now he's best known as the world's most famous child predator. The Sandwich Sicko was convicted for possession of child pornography, and forced to pay restitution (1.4 million) to the 14 separate children he had sexual contact with. It was likely because of that restitution that a judge sentenced this serial pedophile to 15 years in prison, making him eligible for parole in thirteen. That was the first bit of good news he received. Most prolific pedophiles get locked away forever, in large part because sexual predators are prone to recidivism. Not Jared. He'll be out again in 13 years, despite exploiting over a dozen children in a way that will physically and psychologically damage them for the rest of their lives. This is nothing more than a total miscarriage of justice.
This week, the Sandwich Sicko got even more great news. According to the New York Post, he's won a major lawsuit- against another degenerate pedophile:
Disgraced Subway pitchman Jared Fogle can get his dough back from his partner in crime, a judge has ruled.
Fogle sued Russell Taylor — currently serving a 27-year sentence for child porn and child exploitation — for back payments from the $191,000 loan he gave him in 2014 to purchase a home in Wayne Township, Ind., according to court documents obtained by TMZ.
Taylor stopped making the $850 monthly payments on the house, which is the same residence where he secretly recorded young children changing and showering, when he was arrested last April, officials said.
A court ruled that the 43-year-old felon, who ran the Jared Foundation prior to his arrest, would have to cough up the $184,000 he still owed.
Fogle, who is in the slammer for 16 years for having sex with minors and possession of child porn, is now allowed to put the house on the market.
The good news is that although they received 1.4 million in payouts, Fogel's victims still have the right to sue him in civil court. So it's possible the Sandwich Sicko will never see a dime of this money. Here's hoping they do whatever they can to get the justice they so deserve.
Editor's Note - this should come as a surprise to no one, but Fogel is a progressive liberal.

Trump Reaches 50 Percent Support Nationally for the First Time
Donald Trump has reached 50 percent support from Republicans and Republican-leaners nationally for the first time since the beginning of the NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking Poll in late December. This milestone is significant as the 2016 primary heads into its final few weeks of contests, as there has been intense speculation that Trump's support has a ceiling. Though his support has hovered in the high 40s since mid-March, the front-runner had yet to secure half of Republican voters.
These results are according to the latest NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking poll conducted online from April 18 to April 24 of 10,707 adults aged 18 and over, including 9,405 registered voters.

Obama's Radical Sex Ed Agenda
Barack Obama wants to turn your child's elementary school into a "choose your own gender adventure" experience. In fact, it's a top priority for his Department of Education. As the Daily Caller reports:
A top Obama appointee in the Department of Education personally assured a group of LGBT activists that the White House is “aggressively engaged” in the fight to allow transgender students use whichever bathroom they please at school.
DOE Assistant Secretary for the Office of Civil Rights Catherine Lhamon delivered the good news at an LGBT summit hosted by the White House in Michigan last Thursday, where she gave the keynote address.
The event was co-sponsored by activist group Equality Michigan, which has led a statewide charge to allow schoolchildren choose their name, gender and bathroom, all without parental knowledge or input. Officials from seven different federal agencies attended the event, according to the Equality Michigan website.
Equality Michigan executive director Steph White blasted out a giddy email to supporters after the event, which she called “a great catalyst that will propel our collective work forward.” The email included an excerpt from Lhamon’s remarks, which White called “refreshingly clear.”
Speaking about the Obama administration, Lhamon told attendees: “We are serious. We are aggressively engaged. We will enforce Title IX.” The Daily Caller has filed a FOIA request with the Department of Education for Lhamon’s full remarks.

Court Upholds North Carolina Photo ID Mandate
Lawsuits challenging changes to North Carolina's election law failed to show it hampered the ability of minority voters to exercise political power, a federal judge ruled Monday in dismissing the cases.
U.S. District Judge Thomas Schroeder ruled against the U.S. Justice Department, the North Carolina NAACP chapter and named voters. They sued alleging the law was passed to discriminate against poor and minority voters in violation of the Constitution and U.S. Voting Rights Act.
While North Carolina had a sordid history of freezing black voters out of the political process, the plaintiffs didn't show that the law hampered the ability of minority voters to exercise electoral politics, Schroeder said.

Immigrants Filling the Trucking Industry Gap
With the exception of maybe the cowboy, is there any job more typically “American” than being a trucker? Now, it’s time to rethink that as the industry increasingly depends on drivers from many other parts of the world.
To see this shift up close, head 50 miles west of Los Angeles, just off Interstate 10, home to one of the busiest long-haul truck stops in the US. It’s where tired drivers often park their 18-wheelers for the night and eat, shower and relax before hitting the road again. It’s also where you’ll see just how multinational the trucking industry is now because of drivers like Harsharan Singh, originally from Punjab, India.
“I got my license back in 2009, when I came from India. Now, a lot of people from Romania, Yugoslavia, China, Japanese, Russians are coming into this business,” says Singh, who hauls produce all across the Western US and Canada.
Part of the reason behind the shift is that the trucking industry is facing a labor shortage of up to 48,000 drivers, according to the American Trucking Associations. That could balloon to more than 170,000 drivers in the next 10 years.
“The trucking industry is searching for people,” says Justin Lowery, who studies the role of immigrants in US trucking at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Lowery says there is an “aging out” of truck drivers and recent immigrants, willing to work long hours, are filling some of the gap.

Primary Voter Turnout At 46 Percent So Far, At Least 34-Year High
ANNAPOLIS (AP) -- Maryland elections board officials say voter turnout for a presidential primary is the highest in more than 34 years in the state.
Nikki Charlson, deputy administrator of the state elections board, said Wednesday about 1.6 million people cast ballots during early voting and on Election Day. That's about 46 percent of registered voters. Absentee and provisional ballots have not been counted.
Voter turnout this year is higher than the 1982 presidential primary, when it was about 45 percent. Other presidential primary years after that had lower voter turnout until Tuesday.
Helping to drive turnout this year, Maryland's primary came as the presidential primaries are still unresolved, unlike in recent years. Also, Baltimore just moved its local elections to the presidential year, helping to boost turnout in the state's largest city.

Delaware River ship jumpers swim for asylum
Syrian national found on Pea Patch Island in 2014 incident
In 2014, three Syrians jumped off cargo ships traveling along the Delaware River, leaping from ships similar to this livestock carrier.
In October 2014, state park employees just starting their workday made an unusual discovery near the former Civil War prison on Pea Patch Island: a Syrian national who had jumped ship.
“He was cold and exhausted, and they brought him back to Delaware City,” said Chief Wayne Kline of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control enforcement.
In a report released by the U.S. Coast Guard, Fadel Arab, 29 at the time, and an electrician for a Panamanian cargo ship, was reported missing at noon Oct. 22 from the ship which was headed south, leaving the United States. Kline said park officials later took Fadel into custody, passing him to Delaware State Police and eventually U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Sgt. Richard Bratz of the Delaware State Police had no information on Arab or the Pea Patch Island incident, but, he said, at times the Special Operation Response Team helps maritime partners in providing boarding assistance on ships or assists with other federal agencies.

Resort Begins Process For Next Major Convention Center Expansion; More Exhibit Space Needed, Officials Say
OCEAN CITY — Citing a need to gain a competitive edge over similar facilities in the region and increase the economic impact, Ocean City officials on Tuesday moved forward with the next proposed major expansion of the Roland E. Powell Convention Center.
The Mayor and Council on Tuesday approved hiring the Becker Morgan Group to begin performing site planning, a parking analysis and architectural planning for a proposed expansion of the exhibit space for the convention center of 30,000 square feet. The proposed expansion would bring the convention center in line with a recommendation decades ago to eventually expand to 80,000 square feet of exhibit space.
The original Convention Center was built in 1970 with 40,000 square feet of exhibit space on two levels along with seven meeting rooms and breakout rooms and other areas.
The original convention center, with its iconic ramp from Coastal Highway to the front entrance, also included 1,100 parking spaces.

Ryan Tells Young Voters to Ignore Personalities, Vote for Ideas
House Speaker Paul D. Ryan pleaded with college students to look beyond the personalities in this year’s presidential election and instead vote based on ideas, saying Wednesday that the GOP can win that battle.
Holding a town hall with students at Georgetown University, Mr. Ryan urged millennials to pressure leaders to start tackling the debt so it’s not left for their their generation, and said it should be the driving issue for young voters.
And he said the tone of the political fight has grown worse than he’s seen during 18 years in Congress.
“I have never seen the well poisoned as much as it is these days. I have not seen the kind of vitriol and the kind of bitterness in our politics like we are today,” he said.

UMass Amherst students throw temper tantrum at free speech event
Students at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst set a new high for hysteria Monday night at an event featuring Christina Hoff Sommers, Milo Yiannopulous, and Steven Crowder.
The event was intended to be a forum and discussion about the use of political correctness on campus, but degenerated into a shouting match as protesters sought to drown out the speakers with cries of “hate speech” and, less imaginatively, “fuck you.”
“Stop talking to us like children!” ...
“Then stop acting like a child."
When Campus Reform asked the activist to elaborate on the flyers, she refused to provide her name or comment because, as she put it, “Campus Reform causes death and death threats due to its extreme language.”

Former Baltimore police commissioner breaks his silence
The police commissioner, Anthony Batts, was later fired. Since that moment, he has maintained his silence -- until now.
When the rioting began, Batts remembered wondering why his officers were reacting so slowly.
"I was clinching my fists and gritting my teeth and saying, 'Move, go! Go!" Batts told CBS News.

Thank You for the Primary Win!
It was a night of victory!
Just in case you haven't heard, last night was quite the victory celebration. Congratulations to all of the winning Republican candidates across the state as well as thank you to all of those who ran. Republicans are energized and it shows - 214,350 more Republicans voted statewide in the 2016 Presidential primary than in the 2012 Presidential primary and officials must still count absentee and provisional ballots!
I am so humbled to have received 78% of the vote to win the Republican primary and to head into the general election in November. Thank you for your support, your encouraging words, and all the hard work that so many of you have contributed to make our victory possible.
Today started the general election campaign and I'll once again need your support to win in November. You can volunteer for the campaign by signing uphere or you can request literature, bumper stickers, and yard signs by clicking here. With all of us working together, we can celebrate a win in November as well.
Big congratulations to Delegate Kathy Szeliga who won the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat. It was a large field of candidates, 14 in all, and Kathy took an impressive 36% of the vote. She has my full support and I am hoping you will join me in helping to make her our next U.S. Senator from Maryland! You can find out more about her by going to http://www.kathyformaryland.com/. She truly will bring common sense change to Washington DC.
Another doctor in the House? I would be honored to work with Dr. Mark Plaster in the House of Representatives come January 2017 - but we need him to win in November. Dr. Plaster is exactly the right candidate to be able to win against Congressman Sarbanes. Mark and his team have spent the last 2 years covering the 3rd District in his big bus, knocking on doors, helping with neighborhood projects and caring about the residents, their needs, and their circumstances. If you have family or friends living in the 3rd Congressional District make sure they learn more about Dr. Plaster and vote in November. http://www.plasterforcongress.com/
Again, thank you for your continued support. It is my honor to represent the 1st Congressional District of Maryland and with your help, I will continue to represent the 1st District in 2017.
