Borderland Beat: Nine bodies found hanging off Nuevo Laredo bridge

The bodies of four women and five men were found hanging off a bridge in the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo with an apparent message from a drug gang, an army official said Friday.

The bodies showed signs of beating and torture and "we believe they were members of a criminal gang," the official said, declining to be named.

Photographs showed the bodies strung, with their hands tied, along a wide road bridge in the border city in northeast Mexico, across from Laredo, Texas, in a typical sign of score-settling between drug gangs.

A large banner hung nearby with a message alluding to gang disputes.

There were scenes of panic as road users first saw the bodies, which police reports said had been strung up early Friday.

New Photos Depict Horrific Conditions At Border Detention Center

New photos released by Rep. Henry Cuellar's (D-Texas) office depict the unsanitary and cramped living conditions that undocumented immigrants, many of whom are unaccompanied children, are experiencing in a detention center near the U.S.-Mexico border.

The photos were first published by the Houston Chronicle. Cuellar’s office declined Monday to tell Business Insider who took the photos and where exactly they were taken.

President Barack Obama has previously called the buildup of unaccompanied minors at temporary border facilities an "urgent humanitarian situation," and the government has directed considerable resources to housing and caring for the children. Customs and Border Protection, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, is supposed to turn over minors to the Department of Health and Human Services within three days, but many children are remaining in detention facilities for longer periods due to the massive influx.

Bank of America fined $32M for ripping off retirees, charities

Bank of America has been fined more than $32 million by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority for ripping off money from retirement accounts and charity plans.

This is the second time the nation’s No. 2 lender has been caught skimming from retirees’ accounts, the New York Post reported. More than $24 million of the $32 million fine will go to pay customers back, bringing the total amount the bank’s paid for its two-time rip-off to $90 million, the newspaper said.

“From at least January 2006 through December 2011, Merrill Lynch disadvantaged tens of thousands of small business retirement plan customers,” the settlement read, the New York Post reported.

Weak sales for Hillary Clinton's book

Hillary Clinton's new book 'Hard Choices' is a 'bomb', according to a publishing source.

The former first lady's memoir - detailing her time as secretary of state under Obama - has sold just60,000 hardcover copies and 24,000 e-books, the source told The Weekly Standard.

The results come after publisher Simon & Schuster's 'hoping and praying' that 150,000 print copies would be sold in the first week after the book went on sale on June 10, the source added.

'Between us, they are nervous at S&S,' the source said. 'Sales were well below expectations and the media was a disaster... It's a bomb, but it will be interesting to see how they spin it.'

Megyn Kelly Grills Dick Cheney On Iraq, And Tells Him 'History Has Proven You Got It Wrong As Well, Sir'

Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly on Wednesday night grilled former Vice President Dick Cheney, who published an op-ed with his daughter Wednesday blasting President Barack Obama over his handling of the crisis in Iraq.

Dick and Liz Cheney wrote in their Wall Street Journal op-ed that "rarely" has a president ever been "so wrong about so much at the expense of so many."

On her show, "The Kelly File," Kelly read that quote to Cheney and said, "But time and time again, history has proven that you got it wrong as well, sir."

Kelly proceeded to fire off a list of Cheney's claims and pronouncements from his time at the White House that ended up being disputed or outright wrong — that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, that U.S. soldiers would be "greeted as liberators," that the Iraqi insurgency was "in its last throes" in 2005, and that extremists would have to "rethink their strategy of jihad" after the U.S. intervention.

"Now with almost one trillion dollars spent there with 4,500 American lives lost there, what do you say to those who say you were so wrong about so much at the expense of so many?" Kelly said.

Two Democrats Have A Proposal To Dismantle The FCC Plan That Could Ruin The Internet

The Federal Communications Commission in May approved a controversial proposal to create an “internet fast lane,” but two Democratic lawmakers will put forth a bill on Tuesday that would force the FCC to ban those same fast lanes, according to The Washington Post.

The new proposal was created by Senate Judiciary Committee chair Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Rep. Doris Matsui (D-Calif.). The bill — called the Online Competition And Consumer Choice Act — would require the FCC to use its authority to ensure internet providers don’t speed up or slow down certain types of content at the expense of others.

What began as a simple traffic stop ended in a humiliating and nightmarish ordeal for a New Mexico man. It won’t come as a surprise to most people why the man has now filed a federal civil rights lawsuit.

The incident began on Jan. 2 as David Eckert was leaving the local Walmart in Deming, N.M. He reportedly failed to make a complete stop at a stop sign, prompting police to pull him over.

The officers asked him to step out of the vehicle and claim the man appeared to be clenching his buttocks, Eckert’s attorney, Shannon Kennedy, told TheBlaze. It is unclear why police removed him from the vehicle in the first place. However, because the cops believed he was clenching his buttocks, they took it as reason to suspect him of hiding narcotics in his anal cavity.

School blocks NRA, GOP, Christian websites — but not Dem, Islam sites

A senior at one Connecticut high school has asked administrators to explain why he can access websites like Islam-guide.com, the State Democrat site and Planned Parenthood on the school’s computers — but not sites for the NRA, the State GOP or Christianity.com.

Andrew Lampart, 18, said computers at his Nonnewaug High School won’t even let him on to the Vatican’s website, but will grant him access to Pro-Choice America, CBS Connecticut reported.

He said he discovered the discrepancies while trying to research gun control for a classroom debate and couldn’t access the National Rifle Association’s website.

“So I went over to the other side,” he told local WTIC. “And I went over on sites such as Moms Demand Action or Newtown Action Alliance, and I could get on these websites but not the others.”

Ocean City Profanity Ban Going Well So Far, Mayor Says

OCEAN CITY, Md. —Ocean City is a destination for many during the summer, and while there are great free events for families, officials are also working to make it a more family-friendly place.

The town is offering up something free for families every night of the week until the season ends this year, including free concerts and movies on the beach, as well as family beach Olympics and other programs.

But this year, visitors will see something different -- 60 signs hanging from lampposts on every other block asking to keep the language clean.

"We noticed that profanity is something that is objectionable to a lot of people, especially if you have kids on the boardwalk," said Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan.

First major review provides evidence of sharp increase in deaths from painkillers in US and Canada and leading causes.

The number of deaths involving commonly prescribed painkillers is higher than the number of deaths by overdose from heroin and cocaine combined, according to researchers at McGill University. In a first-of-its-kind review of existing research, the McGill team has put the spotlight on a major public health problem: the dramatic increase in deaths due to prescribed painkillers, which were involved in more than 16,000 deaths in 2010 in the U.S. alone. Currently, the US and Canada rank #1 and #2 in per capita opioid consumption.

“Prescription painkiller overdoses have received a lot of attention in editorials and the popular press, but we wanted to find out what solid evidence is out there,” says Nicholas King, of the Biomedical Ethics Unit in the Faculty of Medicine. In an effort to identify and summarize available evidence, King and his team conducted a systematic review of existing literature, comprehensively surveying the scientific literature and including only reports with quantitative evidence.

Franchot Goes Ballistic Over $1M School Aid Study By Denver Firm

The Board of Public Works approved Wednesday paying $1 million to a Colorado-based contractor that will study whether Maryland schools receive adequate funding.

The irony of this was not lost on Comptroller Peter Franchot, who emphatically protested the decision.

“We’re spending a million dollars of the taxpayers money … to determine whether we’re putting enough money in the classroom for our kids,” Franchot said. “I have visited over 200 schools … I can tell you right now we have a lot of unmet needs in our public schools. I can think of several better things to do with a million dollars than hand it over to an out-of-state consulting firm.”

House budget punishes IRS with 15% cut, halts Obamacare enforcement

The Internal Revenue Service is about to get slapped with a harsh payback for messing around with conservative groups, blowing wads of tax dollars on employee conferences and helping implementObamacare.

The House Appropriations Committee is set to OK an IRS budget of $10.9 billion, $1.5 billion under President Obama's request for fiscal year 2015, reducing the agency's budget to 2008 levels.

The goal is to keep the tax agency focused on its “core duties,” and eliminate efforts to judge the political activities of tax-exempt groups and brake its implementation of Obamacare.

The funding is part of a larger $21 billion bill for several agencies including the IRS, Treasury Department and Securities and Exchange Commission. Noting that it cuts $2.3 billion from the president's overall request, Chairman Hal Rogers said, “the bill focuses cuts on lower-priority or poor-performing agencies, such as the scandal-plagued and inefficient Internal Revenue Service.”

Dover Bridge Stuck Open For 2 Hours

TANYARD — After being stuck in the open position for about 2 hours and 15 minutes on Wednesday, June 18, crews got Dover Bridge to close and opened the bridge to vehicle traffic at about 5:45 p.m.

Firefighters from Preston and Easton volunteer fire companies were called to the bridge and sprayed water on the bridge’s metal frame as temperatures Tuesday reached into the upper 90s.
 
Fire crews sprayed the water to cool off the metal.

Traffic backed up for miles in Caroline and Talbot counties as Maryland State Highway Administration crews rerouted traffic through Denton and Cambridge.

“Once again, the Dover Bridge being opened on a hot summer afternoon has caused the bridge to become stuck in the open position,” state Sen. Richard Colburn, R-37-Mid-Shore, said. “This only serves to magnify the fact that should EMT or police personnel from the Caroline County side of the bridge need to get to the hospital located in downtown Easton, a 20-mile detour through Dorchester County would prevent them from reaching the hospital in a timely manner.”

IRS Has Lost More E-mails

It’s not just Lois Lerner’s e-mails. The Internal Revenue Service says it can’t produce e-mails from six more employees involved in the targeting of conservative groups, according to two Republicans investigating the scandal.

The IRS recently informed Ways and Means chairman Dave Camp and subcommittee chairman Charles Boustany that computer crashes resulted in additional lost e-mails, including from Nikole Flax, the chief of staff to former IRS commissioner Steven Miller, who was fired in the wake of the targeting scandal.

The revelation about Lerner’s e-mails rekindled the targeting scandal and today’s news has further inflamed Republicans. Camp and Boustany are now demanding a special prosecutor to investigate “every angle” of the events that led to Lois Lerner’s revelation in May 2013 that the agency had used inappropriate criteria to review the applications for tax exemption.

Buffeted by slow growth and too few jobs, Americans now have to deal with more inflation.

In May, consumer prices rose at more than a 4 percent annual pace, and inflation has been heating up the last several months.

Rapid growth in China is boosting demand for agricultural products, and prices are up for beef, pork and other food products.

Core inflation — prices less food and energy — after remaining fairly subdued for several years, is also accelerating. Americans may be facing inflation greater than 3 percent — or even 4 percent — for the balance of this year and next.

Congress to Obama: Send Us 'All Communications' Between Your Office and Lois Lerner

(CNSNews.com) - Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, is asking President Obama to "ensure accountability" in the ongoing IRS investigation by providing his committee with "all communications between Lois Lerner and any persons within the Executive Office of President for the period between January 1, 2009 and May 1, 2011."

The IRS informed Congress on Friday that an untold number of Lerner's emails to outside agencies, including the White House, were lost during the 2009-2011 time frame due to a "computer crash."

Ways and Means is one of three congressional committees investigating the way the IRS, during Lerner's tenure, handled groups seeking tax-exempt status. The IRS admits that conservative groups were singled out for inappropriate scrutiny and delay before the 2010 midterm election.

"Dear Mr. President," Camp wrote to Obama on Monday, reminding him that he promised to "work hand in hand with Congress to get this thing fixed.”

M&T Bank Must Forfeit $560K In Drug Proceeds

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A federal judge in Baltimore is ordering M&T Bank Corp. to forfeit $560,000 in drug money laundered through a branch in Perry Hall.

U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein announced the forfeiture Wednesday.

The judge found that the bank failed to file reports on at least eight currency transactions in which a teller converted proceeds from illegal drug sales from small denomination bills into $100 bills.

5 Reasons Hillary Won't Run

Hillary Clinton's minions are hard at work assembling a political machine and fine tuning it for another go at the White House. Mrs. Clinton is doing her part preparing for a run as well, churning out a bland memoir about the "hard choices" she faced as secretary of state and coyly positioning herself (again) as the inevitable nominee of the party. But after the troubled beginning to her book tour, we're beginning to see the reasons why Hillary may eventually decide to pull the plug on a 2016 presidential run. Here are five:

1) She's just not that good at campaigning. If the last two gaffe-prone weeks have reminded us of anything about Hillary, it’s that she’s a mediocre politician at best. Her shortcomings are significant: she can be stiff and wooden in public; she lacks the aura of a natural politician; she’s not a great public speaker, and she can come across as politically flat-footed and tone deaf -- as she did with her “dead broke” response to a rather benign question about relating to the financial challenges of the average voter. People still seem to believe that the Clinton name is synonymous with political skill, but that assumption is only half-true: If Hillary possessed even half of Bill’s political talent and acumen, she wouldn’t have lost to Barack Obama in 2008.

Publishing Source: Hillary Book a 'Bomb'

In an email this evening, a veteran publishing source calls the latest Hillary Clinton book, Hard Choices, a memoir of her State Department years, a "bomb." The source is referring to the early but underwhelming sales figures.

"Between us, they are nervous at S&S [Simon & Schuster]," says the source, who gave permission for his email to be published. "Sales were well below expectations and the media was a disaster."

According to this source, a Simon & Schuster insider, "They sold 60,000 hard covers first week and 24,000 ebooks." The publishing house was "hoping and praying for 150,000 print first week."

With last month's rain, we are combining two themes, URBAN ARTSCAPES & WHEELS! URBAN ARTSCAPES is our annual chance to explore our Downtown's cityscape and to showcase concepts in public art and May's theme; WHEELS, will be revisited with community highlights, artist features, gallery shows, car shows and more!

URBAN ARTSCAPES is 3rd Friday's favorite theme because it's our annual chance to explore our Downtown's beauty, history, and architecture, all while exploring concepts in Public Art. It's Downtown viewed as art itself and as a canvas... can it get any better than that?

3rd Friday loves the idea of temporary public art, despite the long list of concerns that come along with that type of projects. Over the years we have searched for a way to out-do sidewalk chalk and bring the Plaza something colorful, beautiful and temporary, without risking any permanent affects and this year the SBY Fiber Artists came to us with an amazing idea for the Plaza; a Yarn Bomb! The SBY Fiber Artists have been knitting and crocheting for months in preparation for this colorful installation that will be sure to give you a warm fuzzy feeling.

PUBLIC ART FEATURE New Vision Heron Mural by James Thatcher For our Public Art Feature, the Salisbury Arts & Entertainment District Committee and Sperry Van Ness-Miller Commercial Real Estate will be unveiling the New Vision Heron Mural by James Thatcher. The Mural is a replacement for Thatcher's original Heron Mural, originally hung from City Center in 1994 as bereavement project in association with Coastal Hospice after the loss of his wife. Initial talks to repair the existing mural led to a new creative vision for the project. Crowd sourced fundraising was used, and now, we are so excited to unveil the new mural at 3rd Friday. The unveiling will be held at 5:00 p.m. at the West Church Street entrance of the City Center. Mural artist James Thatcher will be present for the festivities.

ART & ENTERTAINMENT DOWNTOWN The Art Institute and Gallery will also feature a solo exhibition of James Thatcher's original artwork, as well as, special pieces inspired by his work on the Heron Mural. The AIG Center Gallery will have Under the Influence: Street Musicians by mixed media sculptor and glassblower, Acquaetta Williams, and the Robinson Gallery will house a wide offering from the Salisbury Attic Artists, a local group that has been creating together since in 1984.

There will also several ways to explore what defines our downtown; its architecture. The 2nd Annual Architectural Scavenger Hunt is a fun way to discover the downtown buildings, while trying to find hidden aspects around the Plaza. For those who want to really dive in, an Architectural Walking Tour of Downtown Salisbury, presented by DiCarlo's Digital Copy Center offers a 30 point tour, highlighting all the interesting gables, brickwork, cornices, dormers, arches, pilasters and parapets. Downtown Building features on six prominent locations will be presented by 3rd Friday, Gillis Gilkerson, and the Nabb Center, with each buildings story highlighted on large displays. The buildings we see today have been shaped and re-shaped over time, in fact, telling the stories of Salisbury citizens and our countries history. St. Peter's Episcopal Church will also be offering free guided tours, on the half hours, of one of the most beautiful churches in Salisbury. St. Peter's has held on- site continuous worship since 1768. Its current structure conducted its first service in 1886, after preceding buildings were destroyed by fire. The congregation will also be holding a bargain book sale on the alley with proceeds benefiting Camp Agape. The WHEELS theme brings us the Wheels that Heal Car Club, the Strictly VW Car Club, Salisbury Skate Park, the Salisbury Rollergirls, the Wicomico Bookmobile, and a tricked out NASCAR promoting the upcoming Dew Tour in Ocean City.

You can watch live pottery wheel demonstrations at Clay-A-Palooza, an outdoor pottery making demonstration and interactive tutorial, presented by Amused Studios and The Clay Guild of the Eastern Shore. Salisbury University Art Galleries | Downtown Campus also brings shows in clay. Head On by SU and UMES professor Corinne Beardsley , boasts an entire series of giant sculptured heads. The adjacent gallery is showing Memories in Clay, a uniquely touching exhibit of clay works created by patients of the Eastern Shore Hospital Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, as they participated in an Art Therapy program lead by Margaret Boozer of Red Dirt Studios.

The Tony Weeg Photography Studio & Gallery is hosting "Ride a Bike", a laid back jazz-infused open house, with DJ Uber spinning the tunes and featuring the art of Jordan CK. While Salisbury officials (Barrie, Dunn and Comegys) and an out-of-town owner were scamming City residents to do a special financing deal to develop the old mall site across Glen Avenue from the Civic Center, the Town of Hebron and another developer from elsewhere were trying to hoodwink its residents to support a huge multi-use project on the farm at the intersection of Route 50 and Porter Mill Road. Maryland Zoo Will Ban Smoking On Grounds

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore will ban smoking on its grounds.

The ban takes effect July 1. The zoo says the ban applies to all tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and alternative smoking products or other smoking devices, including e-cigarettes.

Smoking in the zoo's buildings was already prohibited by Maryland law.

MARYLAND’S DNA DATABASE RECORDS 3,500th HIT

(PIKESVILLE, MD) – Governor Martin O’Malley today announced another milestone for Maryland’s DNA database, highlighting its role as an invaluable tool in the State’s success in driving down violent crime and homicide to three decade lows and in achieving the State’s goal to reduce violent crime by 20 percent by 2018.

Maryland’s DNA database, housed at the State Police Forensic Sciences Division laboratory, has now resulted in 3,500 positive comparisons, or “hits,” as they are commonly referred to. A positive comparison occurs when DNA obtained from a crime victim or scene is matched with either a known offender sample or DNA from another crime scene that is on file in Maryland’s DNA database, or CODIS, the Combined DNA Index System, which enables access to the national database.

On June 11, 2014, scientists at the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division forwarded information to detectives at a law enforcement agency in Southern Maryland that the 3,500th positive DNA comparison through the use of Maryland’s DNA database was connected to an open felony crime they are investigating. Specifics in this case cannot be made known at this time because the investigation is ongoing and the suspect has not been charged.

“We continue to see the tremendous impact the integration of science and technology has in our public safety strategy,” Governor Martin O’Malley said. “Thanks to the collective, dedicated efforts of law enforcement and correctional officers, sheriff’s deputies, detention center personnel, and the members of the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division laboratory, Maryland’s DNA database has become a vital tool in our ongoing fight to reduce violent crime in our state.”

Here's the way it should be:

Let's put the seniors in jail and the criminals in nursing homes.

This would correct two things in one motion:

Seniors would have access to showers, hobbies and walks.
They would receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical
Treatment, wheel chairs, etc.

They would receive money instead of having to pay it out.

They would have constant video monitoring, so they would be helped instantly... If they fell or needed assistance.

Bedding would be washed twice a week and all clothing would be ironed and returned to them.

A guard would check on them every 20 minutes.

All meals and snacks would be brought to them.

They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.
They would have access to a library, weight/fitness room, spiritual counseling, a pool and education...and free admission to in-house concerts by nationally recognized entertainment artists.

Simple clothing - i.e.. Shoes, slippers, pj's - and legal aid would befree, upon request..
There would be private, secure rooms provided for all with an outdoor exercise yard complete with gardens.

Each senior would have a P.C., T.V., phone and radio in their roomat no cost.

They would receive daily phone calls.

There would be a board of directors to hear any complaints and the ACLU would fight for their rights and protection.

The guards would have a code of conduct to be strictly adhered to, with attorneys available,at no charge to protect the seniors and their families from abuse or neglect.

As for the criminals:

They would receive cold food..

They would be left alone and unsupervised.

They would receive showers once a week.

They would live in tiny rooms, for which they would have to pay $5,000 per month.

They would have no hope of ever getting out.

Boy, 14, Accused Of Murdering His Father and Autistic Brother Says The Stress of Having A Disabled Sibling Drove Him To Kill

Eldon Samuel III, accused of murdering his father and brother on March 24, says the stress of living with an autistic sibling caused him to snap.

The kicker? Samuel is only 14 years old.

Eldon Gale Samuel III’s 13-year-old brother, Jonathan Samuel, had autism, which Eldon told authorities caused his father, 46-year-old Eldon Samuel Jr., to develop an addiction to painkillers, and for his mother to leave the family…’Eldon, when asked why he did what he did, said “If [his brother] wasn’t there … we’d be a happy family,’” Magistrate Judge Barry Watson told reporters on Friday.

Eldon described ‘hating Jonathan for about five years,’ the Spokesman-Review reports. He told authorities that he loved his father, but that he acted crazy when he was under the influence of drugs…’He just beat me. I loved him, but the next time he came after me …,’ Samuel told police officers in a report quoted by Watson. ‘That’s self-defense, right?’

As much as I believe that Samuel should be held accountable and punished, if the abuse allegation is true, it’s hard to condemn him. What a sad story all around–he is, after all, just a kid.
