CURL: It's the Democrats' turn for a 'culture of corruption'

In the run-up to the 2006 mid-term elections, crucial to President George W. Bush’s plans for his last two years in office, scandal reared its hideous head. Again and again. And just for the Republicans.

First, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay resigned in disgrace after he was charged with violating campaign finance laws and money laundering. Then, Rep. Duke Cunningham pleaded guilty to a slew of federal charges like bribery, fraud, tax evasion. And right before Election Day, Rep. Mark Foley resigned after accusations of sending male teenage congressional pages sexually explicit messages.

Democrats danced. “Culture of corruption!” they cried. And they swept the elections, re-taking control of both the House and the Senate, and even picking up as majority of state governorships and legislatures across the country. Mr. Bush was finished, and some political pundits say the lingering effects led to the 2008 presidential victory by Barack Obama.

But now, the shoe is on the foot — or feet, as it were.

Taking a stand.

You may have heard about this story, although maybe not as much as we're hearing about it in the Detroit-area media. It happened last week, when a man from the suburbs named Steven Utash accidently hit a young boy with his car, then jumped out of the car to check on the boy. A mob of approximately 12 youths, having seen the car hit the boy, subsequently attacked Utash and severely beat him.

It now looks as if Utash is going to live, but we're only hearing today about the reason the beating apparently stopped short of killing him.

I Looked Up The Fastest-Growing Jobs In America, And Boy Was It Depressing

If you live in certain buildings in New York City, you get to know your doorman.

The weekend guy in my building, Gene, knew I was a business reporter, and on Saturday he asked me what his son should study when he starts City College next year.

(City College, by the way, remains the primary option — and a stellar one — for advanced higher ed in New York for the children of what remains of New York's working class.)

Anyway, off the top of my head, I was at a loss. I mostly cover energy, an area that obviously has seen tremendous growth in the past few years, but I doubted his son would be interested in moving to North Dakota or Texas to work on an oil rig.

So I told him I'd look up what the fastest-growing job opportunities were in the country.

Each year, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects which occupations it expects will see the greatest growth in the next few years.

U.S. Picks Up $700 Million Tab For Coalition’s Food And Laundry In Afghanistan

In a staggering loss of money even by Pentagon standards, the U.S. military and two contractors left American taxpayers on the hook for more than $700 million in food, laundry and other services that should have been billed to countries that sent troops to Afghanistan.

Coalition countries tacitly agreed to reimburse the Army, but U.S. regional commands in Afghanistan frequently failed to pass along the charges, according to audit records obtained by The Washington Times through the Freedom of Information Act.

The failures, which spanned a 27-month period from 2010 to 2012, included contractors, who didn’t report the costs of services to coalition forces, and poorly trained military overseers who neglected to enforce key contract terms with the two companies, identified as DynCorp andFluor.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida welfare fraudsters beware. A bipartisan legislative effort designed to clobber public assistance abuse may soon send welfare perps to prison for a long time.

Ripping off Medicaid, food stamps or taxpayer-funded cash assistance programs for more than$100,000 could mean 30 years in prison, the sentencing equivalent of seriously hurting a law officer.

Wrongfully receiving or seeking public assistance in the amount of $20,000 could carry a penalty of up to 15 years in prison.

Charity Brawl: NYPD, FDNY Engage In Wild Fisticuffs At Nassau Coliseum

Moral of the story? Boys will be boys, even if they are playing for a good cause.

The NYPD and FDNY took the ice Sunday for their annual charity hockey game at Nassau Coliseum. And while it started out with the usual spirit of camaraderie, it didn’t take long for things to get out of hand.

Like, really out of hand.

With the score tied 3-3 in the second period, the teams engaged in the type of full-out bench-clearing brawl that was typically seen in the NHL during the 1970s and ’80s, and is still occasionally waged in the minors today.

Are We Heading For Another 1987-Style Crash?

The big story developing in the US markets regards the sudden crackdown by regulators, most notably the SEC and Justice Department, on High Frequency Trading or HFT.

For well over five years now, certain trading firms have been using high-speed computers to front-run orders from other investors.

In simple terms, the market exchanges, like the NYSE, would let these firms (for a price of course) see when someone put in a market order to buy or sell shares on the market.

The trading firm would then use super fast computer programs to buy or sell shares in front of that order, before turning around and selling the shares to the investor at a slightly higher price. The trading program may only make a $0.01 profit by doing this, but because they were doing it millions of times a day, they were making billions of Dollars per year.

At one point, this practice accounted for as much as 70% of all market volume. Put another way, 70% of all shares being traded on the market were not from investors actually placing buy and sell orders, but from computers front-running investors and each other.

Dutch was asked to speak at a grammar school this past week.

The young teacher introduced him by saying that the speaker was a veteran of World War Eleven (as in WW II).

Dutch stood up and walked out of the school without saying a word.

Ted Cruz-Sponsored Bill To Bar Iran’s U.N. Envoy From Entering U.S. Passes Senate

A measure that would bar Iran’s recently appointed ambassador to the United Nations from entering the United States easily passed the Senate on Monday, delivering a rare legislative victory for its lead sponsor, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.).

Cruz, a first-term senator who is considering a run for president in 2016, has spent the last several days railing against Iran’s appointment of Hamid Aboutalebi as its new top envoy to the United Nations in New York.

Aboutalebi was a member of the student group that led the 1979 seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. He has acknowledged that he worked with the organization that took over the embassy, but has played down his role in the crisis.

Issa Report Slams Dem Collaboration with the IRS

A bombshell report released by House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) completely refutes Democratic Party talking points that the IRS scandal involved unwarranted targeting of both liberal and conservative groups. “Time and again, (Democrats) have claimed that the IRS targeted liberal- and progressive-oriented groups as well—and that, therefore, there was no political animus to the IRS’s actions” the report states. “These Democratic claims are flat-out wrong and have no basis in any thorough examination of the fact. Yet the Administration’s chief defenders continue to make these assertions in a concerted effort to deflate and distract from the truth about the IRS’s targeting of tax-exempt applicants.”

The report reveals far more about the early stages of Tea Party targeting conducted by the tax collection agency, identifying the initial three cases sent to Washington, D.C. for additional scrutiny in 2010. Two of the three abandoned their applications rather than face additional IRS questioning. The third group isstill waiting for its case to be resolved.

Md. Casino Revenue Totals Nearly $78M In March

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland officials say the state's four casinos brought in nearly $78 million in revenue last month.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency announced Monday that Maryland Live Casino in Anne Arundel County led the group with nearly $62 million from slot machines and table games. That's a 38.5 percent increase since March 2013.

Hollywood Casino Perryville generated nearly $8 million from slots and table games, a 16.5 percent decline compared to last March. Casino at Ocean Downs generated more than $4 million from slot machines, a more than 5 percent increase from March 2013.

Rocky Gap Casino Resort, which opened in May last year in Allegany County, generated nearly $4 million from slot machines and table games.

Christie doubles down on Muslim judge appointment to Jewish audience

Christie shut down the GW Bridge, now he’s selling one to Jews. via Christie deftly defends appointment of Muslim Judge at RJC meeting | The Daily Caller.

Speaking at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s meeting in Las Vegas on Saturday, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie responded calmly, but strongly, to a question about Sharia Law, taking the occasion to address lingering concerns about a Muslim judge he appointed in 2011.

“Sohail Mohammed knows as much about jihad as I do, being an Irish-American kid from Newark, New Jersey,” Christie said of the Indian-American judge who immigrated to America as a child.

Christie knows taqqiya. But if he knows nothing about the number one threat discussed since 9/11 (with the ’93 WTC bombing emanating in New Jersey), then he is woefully ignorant and unfit not only to run for president but to run a state that is home to large numbers of jihadists and sharia supporters.

“It is ridiculous and insulting, that because I nominated Sohail Mohammed — that people some how think that means I’m for Sharia Law. It’s crap,” he said to applause. “And I will not ever apologize for making him a judge — in fact, I’m proud of it.”

“Sharia Law won’t come into New Jersey,” Christie continued, “and to suggest otherwise is nothing more than internet blog B.S.”

Chicago preacher James Meeks dumps Dems, backs GOP gubernatorial candidate

The choir sang hallelujah as the congregation of 15,000 clapped and sang along. Reverend James Meeks ratcheted up the intensity of his speech. “Man looks at the outside,” he shouted rearing his head back. “But God looks at your heart! Are you with me here?”

Judging by the response, Meeks had the faithful at Salem Baptist Church hanging on his every word.“One hundred percent with Reverend Meeks,” said parishioner Eugene Harris outside the mega-church on Chicago’s fiercely Democratic South Side.

Meeks is careful not to preach politics from the pulpit. That doesn’t mean he does not have a political side. This former state senator is active as a leader in Chicago’s African-American community and also has considerable political clout.

Pedestrian Killed by Train Near Newport

Date of Occurrence: Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at approximately 11:56 a.m.

Newport- The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a collision involving an Amtrak train that struck a killed a pedestrian near Newport.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:56 a.m. this morning on the train tracks near Meco Drive. A preliminary investigation indicates an Amtrak Acela train struck and killed a pedestrian. The pedestrian has not been identified.

Detectives are on scene and this investigation is ongoing.

Feds Steal Ranchers Cattle in Armed Helicopter Raids: Feds attempt to rub out Family Farmers

In the latest attempt to rub out the family farm, the Federal Government is targeting a rancher in Nevada by sending in armed agents, armored vehicles and low-lying helicopters to steal the ranchers cattle.

Cliven Bundy, who has been fighting the federal government’s attempts to shut him down for the last 20 years, is in a bitter battle that just took a turn for the worse. Over the weekend, armed federal agents from the Bureau of Land Management stormed Bundy’s land, stealing over 500 of the rancher’s cattle.

The government claims the cattle were illegally grazing on government land; but Bundy, who has been a rancher all his life, says he’s been doing it this way for decades. In fact, his cattle are grazing on the same land that his father and father’s father used to raise their cattle.

The trouble started in 1993 when Bundy refused to pay the feds for the right to allow his cattle to graze on land that he claims has been in his family since the 1880s. His family actually owned the land before the Bureau of Land Management ever even came into existence; so how the federal government can now claim they own the land is a bit puzzling.

“We own this land,” he said, not the feds. He said he is willing to pay grazing fees but only to Clark County, not BLM.

“Years ago, I used to have 52 neighboring ranchers,” he said. “I’m the last man standing. How come? Because BLM regulated these people off the land and out of business.”

9 Of The Top 10 Occupations In America Pay An Average Wage Of Less Than $35,000 A Year

According to stunning new numbers just released by the federal government, that we detailed yesterday, nine of the top ten most commonly held jobs in the United States pay an average wage of less than $35,000 a year. When you break that down, that means that most of these workers are making less than $3,000 a month before taxes. And once you consider how we are being taxed into oblivion, things become even more frightening. Can you pay a mortgage and support a family on just a couple grand a month? Of course not. In the old days, a single income would enable a family to live a very comfortable middle class lifestyle in most cases. But now those days are long gone.

In 2014, both parents are expected to work, and in many cases both of them have to get multiple jobs just in order to break even at the end of the month. The decline in the quality of our jobs is a huge reason for the implosion of the middle class in this country. You can't have a middle class without middle class jobs, and we have witnessed a multi-decade decline in middle class jobs in the United States. As long as this trend continues, the middle class is going to continue to shrink.

2 powerful forces join to take over GOP

Richard Viguerie, often called the “founding father of conservatism” for his advances in direct-mail fundraising, is on a campaign to take back the Republican Party from the “big government” advocates.

In that pursuit, he has a new book, “Takeover: The 100-Year War for the Soul of the GOP and How Conservatives Can Finally Win It,” coming out in just days.

Now he’s being joined in his effort by a force powerful enough to turn the tide in the 2010 elections and leave the U.S. House of Representatives in the hands of Republicans, including many that follow a conservative pathway.

That would be the tea party, represented here by Tea Party Patriots President Jenny Beth Martin, who wrote the forward for Viguerie’s book.

She explains that a “bitter political civil war” is happening now that ultimately will determine whether America remains a constitutional republic.

America's New Drug Policy Landscape

Two-Thirds Favor Treatment, Not Jail, for Use of Heroin, Cocaine

The public appears ready for a truce in the long-running war on drugs. A national survey by the Pew Research Center finds that 67% of Americans say that the government should focus more on providing treatment for those who use illegal drugs such as heroin and cocaine. Just 26% think the government’s focus should be on prosecuting users of such hard drugs.

Support for a treatment-based approach to illegal drug use spans nearly all demographic groups. And while Republicans are less supportive of the treatment option than are Democrats or independents, about half of Republicans (51%) say the government should focus more on treatment than prosecution in dealing with illegal drug users.

As a growing number of states ease penalties for drug possession, the public expresses increasingly positive views of the move away from mandatory sentences for non-violent drug crimes. By nearly two-to-one (63% to 32%), more say it is a good thing than a bad thing that some states have moved away from mandatory sentences for non-violent drug offenders. In 2001, Americans were evenly divided over the move by some states to abandon mandatory drug terms.

The survey by the Pew Research Center, conducted Feb. 14-23 among 1,821 adults, finds that support for the legalization of marijuana use continues to increase. And fully 75% of the public –including majorities of those who favor and oppose the legal use of marijuana – think that the sale and use of marijuana will eventually be legal nationwide.

By wide margins, the public views marijuana as less harmful than alcohol, both to personal health and to society more generally. Moreover, just as most Americans prefer a less punitive approach to the use of drugs such as heroin and cocaine, an even larger majority (76% of the public) – including 69% of Republicans and 79% of Democrats – think that people convicted of possessing small amounts of marijuana should not have to serve time in jail.

DEA Administrator Tells Congress Her Agency Is “Fighting Back” Against Administration’s Tolerance of Marijuana Legalization

At a Wednesday House subcommittee hearing, DEA director Michele Leonhart publicly opposed Department of Justice position on legal marijuana in Colorado and Washington and warned of dangers of marijuana legalization … to pets

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Michele Leonhart, administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), repeatedly criticized the Obama administration at a hearing Wednesday on the DEA’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

In a memo released in July 2013, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it would not interfere with the effective implementation of laws regulating the cultivation and sale of marijuana for adults in Colorado and Washington. When asked by Congressman Frank Wolf (R-VA) during a Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies subcommittee hearing whether the Obama administration’s tolerant views toward legal marijuana had affected morale at the DEA, which is a branch of the DOJ, Leonhart replied that “our agents are fighting back against those messages. It makes us fight harder.” She had earlier criticized the DOJ for a perceived delay in issuing a response to Washington and Colorado’s new laws, claiming there was “a lot of confusion in those 296 days.”

Leonhart also claimed that public opinion in Colorado is turning against the initiative making marijuana legal, yet two recent polls suggest Colorado residents are more supportive of the law than ever before. A Public Policy Polling survey from March showed that 57% of Colorado voters think marijuana should be legal, and a Quinnipiac poll from February showed 58% support for the state’s legalization law. It was supported by 54.8% of voters in 2012. Finally, Leonhart claimed legalization would be dangerous to pets in Colorado and warned of a surge in veterinary clinic visits due to dogs consuming marijuana.

Lawmakers Wrap Up Session Passing Minimum Wage Hike, Marijuana Bills

On the last day of the 2014 Session of the Maryland General Assembly, lawmakers in Maryland have passed the first increase in the minimum wage since 2006.

The House of Delegates this morning voted 87-47 to approve the bill to raise the minimum wage gradually, over a four year period to $10.10-an hour by July, 2018.

The bill also gives workers at state supported nonprofits who care for the disabled a 3.5% annual increase in their salary from 2016-2019.

All of the votes in favor of the bill came from Democrats, who believe this will help low wage workers, particularly women and minorities.

Federal snipers with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) trained guns on members of a family yesterday after they dared to stop and take video footage of cattle outside the bounds of a designated “First Amendment Area,” before arresting one of the men for non-compliance.

The cattle were being rounded up by BLM officers as part of a crackdown on Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who has refused to pay “grazing fees” demanded by the feds as a result of a re-classification of 600,000 acres of federal land in northeastern Clark County which Bundy claims has been in his family for generations.

Anja Niedringhaus, 48, an internationally acclaimed German photographer, was killed instantly, according to an AP Television News freelancer who witnessed the shooting.

Poodle Club of America National Specialty Dog Show Returns to WY&CC April 20-25

Salisbury, Md. – Hundreds of poodles and poodle owners from across the United States, Europe, Australia and Japan will descend upon Salisbury for the 82nd Annual Poodle Club of America National Specialty Dog Show April 20-25 at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. The event is all poodles, all varieties including toy, miniature and standard. The show is free of charge for spectators and open to the public.

The Civic Center will be transformed for the weeklong show. Pelosi: House Dems ‘Proud’ of Obamacare, Those Running From it Are ‘Exceptions’

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told State of the Union’s Candy Crowley Sunday morning that Democrats were openly embracing the success of the Affordable Care Act, and that the candidates who were distancing themselves from the law were the exception.

“7 million people signed up!” Pelosi said. “The Congress of the United States wrote the bill, the members are proud of what they’ve done, are happy to not run away from what we have done. We are proud of what we accomplished.”

Crowley asked about certain members in vulnerable districts who were crab-walking away from the bill, largely by proposing “fixes” to the legislation.

On Friday, April 4, 2014, the Ocean City Police Department celebrated its annual “Auxiliary Officer of the Year” luncheon. The OCPD Auxiliary Unit, which began in 1999, boasts 12 members who volunteer their time to the Ocean City Police Department and the Ocean City community.

The title of “Auxiliary Officer of the Year” is awarded to those who best demonstrate a devotion to duty and public service and whose conduct and contributions exemplify the purpose of the Auxiliary Unit. This year, the honor was awarded to Auxiliary Officer’s Dorothy Morse and Tonja Sas. Each has been a member of the Auxiliary Unit since its inception in 1999.  Auxiliary Officer’s Morse and Sas have volunteered a combined total of 9,759.75 hours of service to the Ocean City Police Department and the citizens of Ocean City.  Ocean City Police are sincerely grateful for each Auxiliary Officers’ service and commitment.

“Our Auxiliary Officers are invaluable to our department,” commented Chief Ross Buzzuro. “Their dedication to public safety in Ocean City has greatly benefited our community and the men and women of the Ocean City Police Department. I commend Auxiliary Officer Morse and Auxiliary Officer Sas for their tremendous commitment to the Ocean City community.”

Since its inception, the officers of the Auxiliary Unit have collectively volunteered a total of 51,379.75 hours of service to the Ocean City Police Department.  In 2013, Auxiliary Officers volunteered 2,956.5 service hours.

TWO SUSPECTS INDICTED IN AUGUST ASSAULT CASE

 

On February 24, 2014, a Worcester County Grand Jury indicted two suspects, Wade William Korvin, 21, of Odenton, MD, and Terrance James Webster, 20, of Odenton, MD on multiple charges stemming from an incident that occurred in Ocean City last summer. The suspects are each being charged with first degree assault, second degree assault and reckless endangerment, for a serious assault that occurred on August 18, 2013.

Officers responded to the area of 17^th Street and St. Louis Avenue at approximately 1:45 a.m. and located the male victim suffering from serious injuries. During the subsequent investigation, officers determined the victim had gotten into a physical altercation with a group of unknown males who then fled the scene.  Although police quickly arrived on scene and searched the area, officers were unable to locate the suspects.

Over the next several months, detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division’s Major Crimes Unit were able to identify Korvin and Webster as the two suspects involved in the assault. Detectives presented the case to the Worcester County State’s Attorney’s Office, who secured Grand Jury indictments on both individuals. Korvin and Webster were both released from custody on $100,000.00 bond pending their cases being heard in the Circuit Court for Worcester County.

Immediately following the incident, the victim was admitted to Johns Hopkins Medical Center Surgical Intensive Care Unit in Baltimore, MD.  The victim has since been released from the hospital, however is still suffering from the long term effects of the assault.

Black teens arrested in beating of pickup driver

DETROIT — Detroit police have arrested two teenagers in connection with the brutal beating of a motorist that has sparked outrage across the nation.

The teens, ages 16 and 17, were arrested without incident early Saturday morning in the area of the beating on Detroit’s eastside, according to Detroit Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Woody.

Woody said the teens, who are from Detroit, were part of the group that beat Steve Utash, 54, on Wednesday, after his pickup hit 10-year-old David Harris, and he stopped to check on the boy. Woody declined to discuss a motive for the attack.

Police have said the boy was struck after he stepped into the path of the pickup, and that Utash, who as of Saturday afternoon was in a medically induced coma at St. John Hospital and Medical Center with multiple head injuries, was not at fault.

STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION RESURFACES BOTH DIRECTIONS OF US 50 IN CAMBRIDGE

Project to Improve East and Westbound lanes from Choptank River Bridge to Bucktown Road

The State Highway Administration (SHA) begins paving four miles of US 50 (Ocean Gateway) in Cambridge, Dorchester County, starting Wednesday, April 9. The project will resurface two and one-half miles of east and westbound US 50 from the Choptank River Bridge to Bucktown Road.

The project is scheduled to be complete by April 25, weather permitting. SHA awarded the $1.2 million contract to American Infrastructure of Fallston.

During construction, motorists will encounter single lane closures Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The contractor will use variable message boards, temporary signs, cones and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone. Motorists should plan extra commute time during the resurfacing project.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer

Location: 32000 block of Longridge Road, Parsonsburg, MD

Suspect: Patrick Allen Layfield, 46, Salisbury, MD

Narrative: On 7 April 2014 at 5:15 PM a deputy responded to the 32000 block of Longridge Drive for a reported motor vehicle collision. Upon arrival, the deputy located a F150 that had run off the road. While speaking with the operator, Patrick Layfield, the deputy detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The deputy also observed that Layfield was unsteady on his feet. Layfield would be subsequently arrested for DUI.

The deputy located two empty bottles of Captain Morgan in Layfield’s vehicle along with a pill bottle that contained what was identified as narcotic pain pills that were not prescribed to Layfield.

The deputy transported Layfield to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, the Commissioner detained Layfield in the Detention Center in lieu of $15,000.00 bond.

Preliminary reports show that officers issued 92 citations for violations, the majority of them for harvesting undersized or unsorted oysters and harvesting in prohibited areas. The total is a 3-year low and the second lowest number of citations in five years.
