CONGRESSMAN WAYNE GILCHREST OFFICIALLY ENDORSES GOVERNOR O'MALLEY
Respected Statesman and Environmental Leader Crosses Party Lines to Support
Governor 'On the Side' of Maryland's Working Families
Baltimore, MD (October 25, 2010) --Joined by friends and supporters at the popular Easton Market Square, former Republican Congressman Wayne T. Gilchrest formally endorsed Martin O'Malley for Governor. The Republican Congressman, who served Maryland's first Congressional district for 18 years until 2009, cited Governor O'Malley's commitment to Eastern Shore families and environmental stewardship in his endorsement.
"Throughout his distinguished service in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Gilchrest has always sought consensus, looking beyond political labels to do the right thing for Marylanders," said Governor O'Malley. "Today I am honored to have the support of this great leader, who has fought for our country, fought for our State, fought for our children, fought our environment...and never once let partisanship stand in the way of progress. I am grateful for the support and wise counsel of Congressman Gilchrest, as we work together to protect our land and our water, and expand opportunities for all Maryland children to enjoy outdoor experiences and learn about our environment."
"Governor O'Malley is to be commended for making the tough decisions to move Maryland forward during very difficult economic times," said Congressman Gilchrest. "His efforts to restore the health of the Bay, preserve our open space, and teach our children important lessons about environmental stewardship are helping to improve the quality of life for countless families on the Eastern Shore. I know Martin O'Malley. I have counseled him on environmental policy and I know he makes all of his decisions with the best interests of Maryland families in mind."
Congressman Gilchrest represented Maryland's Eastern Shore for decades and is well known for his strong stance on protecting Maryland's environment-a commitment shared by the O'Malley-Brown Administration. Before he was elected to Congress, Congressman Gilchrest served in the United States Marines and was a high school teacher at Kent County High School.
Governor O'Malley has been recognized as a national leader in implementing effective environmental restoration policies. Under his leadership, since 2007 Maryland has preserved 31,000 acres of land through Program Open Space, more than three times the previous Administration; developed the region's most substantive Chesapeake Bay restoration plan; increased environmental enforcement actions by 54 percent; enacted management strategies leading to a 60 percent increase in the Bay's blue crab population; adopted a visionary plan to restore native oysters and promote development of an aquaculture industry; initiated a new strategic growth plan; increased its Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard; committed to a 25% reduction in state greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, and set a goal of creating or maintaining 100,000 green jobs by 2015.
GOP Braces For 'Epidemic' ACORN-Style Vote Fraud In Midterms
Like the mythological hydra that grew two heads for every one cut off, the controversial ACORN group has been reborn under a swarm of new names and poses an "epidemic" voter-fraud threat that could alter the outcome of midterm elections, GOP leaders warn.
David Norcross, chairman of the Republican National Lawyers Association, tells Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview that the community-organizing group ACORN "absolutely" has re-emerged since it was disbanded in March 2010 following a rash of voter-fraud investigations.
"Some of the old ACORN groups are back at it again," Norcross tells Newsmax.TV. "They use quotas for registration. That encourages people to go out and sign up anybody, or nobody -- just sign up addresses and things like that."
Story continues below.
Norcross says his group has already received reports of voting irregularities "on multiple fronts."
"It's an epidemic," Norcross tells Newsmax. "It's laughable that the left calls voter fraud nonexistent. It's very much existent."
Two years ago, according to Norcross, the Service Employees International Union and ACORN were "joined at the hip." Even without a group named ACORN per se, attempts to manipulate the election will continue, he says.
"There's no question in my mind that the SEIU will continue those registration tactics, whether not any semblance of ACORN is involved," he says.
"But there's also ample evidence that ACORN has been reborn with a number of new names," he says. "What you want to look for as key words are 'community organization,' [and] 'justice, ' [or] 'working families.' Those are all key words, and we believe those organizations are simply re-made ACORN organizations."
Norcross says his organization, whose mission includes the promotion of fair and honest elections, has alerted its members around the country to be on the lookout for organizations bearing ACORN-related names.

Pelosi Takes The Heat
'If I were not effective they wouldn't care about me'
With one week left in the campaign, the Speaker of the House talks to Politics Daily about what's at stake in the election
The first time I got Nancy Pelosi on the phone, 15 years ago, she struck me as one driven sister. I had only been in Washington for a few months, and had called her for a story I was working on about a House colleague of hers. Even the most junior New York Times reporters tend to get their calls returned, but Pelosi's press person phoned me back to say I shouldn't expect to hear from the congresswoman that day because she was out of pocket, attending to her mother's funeral. Mortified — I had no idea her mother had died — I apologized and put the phone down, only to be surprised shortly thereafter by a call from Pelosi, who was working her way through her call list all the same. Of course I had no idea how far the inability to take a day off would take her, but one criticism you never hear about the Speaker of the House of Representatives is this year's most popular put-down; no one would dream of telling Nancy Pelosi to cowgirl up.

NRA Endorsement
Joe,
I received this post card in the mail, and while comparing candidates I looked up HB 683 and found that Norm Conway’s name does not appear anywhere on the bill, nor does it appear on HB 407, which was last year’s version, neither as a Sponsor nor a Co- sponsor. I called both the NRA and Conway’s office today to ask for the lowdown on this, as Conway’s own website’s list of bills he either sponsored or co-sponsored doesn’t list this one either.
After speaking with both Norm Conway’s office and the NRA-ILA office, neither could find that this was true, either. The NRA-ILA promised me that they would send out a corrective email to its members if they continue to find no sponsorship on this issue.
They did, however, state that Norm has in the past been a favorable voter on 2nd Amendment issues, hence his A rating which is shared by McDermott and Pusey as well.

Structure Fire On Holland Island
"FYI, West Side, Hebron, and Mardela were all dispatched to assist Dorchester Co with a structure fire located on Holland Island. West Side (12-16, Deputy Chief) advised Central that the only access to the island was by boat and that station 5 and 9 could return to service. West Side also said that if they were still
needed that the only thing they could do was shoot water from the boat and that they would NOT be doing any active structure fire fighting on the ground.
Central advised West Side that Dorch still wanted their assistance. Then Central came back on and said that a member of West Side called in and said that he was on the island yesterday and that it may be a controlled burn. West Side responded to that statement by saying they were NOT going to respond to the fire. After a few minutes a member of West Side asked for confirmation that they were not going in to help and 12-16 said that when Dorch. got there, IF they still needed help that they would go in, but as of now they were NOT going to make an attempt.
Wow, that seems like not only a big mess, but if they have to get a boat loaded, manned, and launched just to get out there, then they may want to at least be loaded and ready to go, if not, actually being on their way to save some time! I mean, I'm not a chief or anything, but if they are going to waste time and gas riding around for the fun of it any other time why not actually start heading out there for just in case??? What is your opinion?
***ESPECIALLY SINCE IT'S ON AN ISLAND!!!!***
It's not like it's just down the road from the station. They have to take a boat
there!"

STATEMENT FROM O'MALLEY-BROWN CAMPAIGN ON WASHINGTON POST POLL
Baltimore, MD (October 25, 2010) -- In response to the latest Washington Post poll, which shows Governor O'Malley gaining momentum over Bob Ehrlich, O'Malley-Brown Campaign Manager Tom Russell issued the following statement:
"The latest polling from the Washington Post confirms what we are seeing on the ground: Marylanders are rallying around Governor O'Malley's vision to move Maryland forward through more jobs, better schools, and safer communities. While the momentum in this race is clearly on our side, our opponent will stop at nothing to save his 24-year political career through desperate negative attacks and underhanded voter suppression tactics. Marylanders know we cannot afford to let Maryland slip backwards with four more years of Bob Ehrlich."
Flawed Polls Miss Ehrlich’s Momentum
· You know political polling is flawed when The (Baltimore) Sun editorial board throws cold water on its own paper’s poll, but that’s exactly what happened this weekend.
· The Sun wrote of its own flawed poll that it, “wouldn’t bet” on those flawed results materializing. – The Baltimore Sun, October 24, 2010
· The new Washington Post poll is no more reliable. 40 percent of those surveyed in today's Post poll do not even describe themselves as likely voters, meaning that the results are diluted by individuals who are less likely to vote.
· Bob Ehrlich has momentum going into the final week of the campaign for three reasons:
o Incredible fundraising reports showing that Marylanders helped Bob Ehrlich nearly double Martin O’Malley in his last fundraising report;
o Strong endorsements from newspapers, fire-fighters, and police officers across the state;
o Economic Stagnation as Maryland's unemployment rate ticked up yet again to 7.5% under Martin O'Malley - double the rate when O'Malley took office.
Washington Wins, Football Fans Lose
The numbers speak for themselves. Six interceptions, seven fumbles and nine turnovers between the teams marked the Redskins' 17-14 win over the Bears -- one of the sloppiest wins in recent history.
It happened to be a gorgeous day in Chicago. Neither the Redskins' Donovan McNabb nor the Bears' Jay Cutler could blame the sloppy play on precipitation.
After all, Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall was able to make plenty of catches. His four interceptions tied an NFL record for interceptions in a single game. Hell, Hall's four receptions were good enough to make him Cutler's second overall receiver for the game. Those four interceptions -- which all came during what must have been a demoralizing second half for Cutler -- were definitely good enough to tie an NFL record for interceptions in a game.

PRMC AND SHOREBIRDS PARTNER FOR SUCCESSFUL FLU CLINIC
Over 5,000 Vaccinated In Two-Day Clinic at Perdue Stadium
Salisbury, MD – For a fifth consecutive year, the Delmarva Shorebirds and Peninsula Regional Medical Center partnered to put on a “Drive-Thru” Flu Clinic in the parking lot of Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. PRMC administered vaccinations on Thursday, October 21 and Friday, October 22 from 10 am until 6 pm.
“We treasure our relationship with PRMC and we look forward to lending our parking lot to them each and every year,” said general manager Chris Bitters. “We hope that people continue to take advantage of the convenience and care that the “Drive-Thru” clinic provides.”
This year, the two-day clinic administered approximately 5,000 vaccinations according to PRMC Director of Community Relations, Roger Follebout, Jr.
“It has been an incredible relationship with the Delmarva Shorebirds,” said Follebout. “The Shorebirds have provided us with everything we need to successful run this clinic to accommodate over 5,000 people.”
Peninsula Regional Medical Center has effectively used the “Drive-Thru” model for the last 17 years. The clinic was previously run at the hospital until PRMC went in search of a bigger venue.
“We went looking for a venue that could accommodate 7,000 cars over two days and we found it at Perdue Stadium.” said Follebout. “If we can vaccinate 5,000 people, that’s 5,000 people that won’t get the flu this year.”
Including nurses, hospital administrators and volunteers, between 75-100 people assisted in the overall operation of the clinic.
If you missed the clinic and are in need of more information about vaccinations, please contact Peninsula Regional Medical Center at 1-800-955-PRMC or visit them online at http://www.peninsula.org/.
Canadian Admits Terror Charges, Avoids Gitmo Trial
Plea comes amid speculation about a deal to send him to Canada prison
GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba — Canadian captive Omar Khadr pleaded guilty on Monday to all five terrorism charges against him in the U.S. war crimes tribunal at the Guantanamo Bay naval base as part of a deal that would limit his sentence
.
Khadr, who was captured in Afghanistan at age 15 and is now 24, admitted he conspired with al-Qaida and killed a U.S. soldier with a grenade in Afghanistan.
Before finalizing the plea, the judge said he would question Khadr to ensure the defendant understood he was waiving his right to appeal.
Khadr was 15 when he was captured in the rubble of a bombed-out al-Qaida compound in Afghanistan and has spent more than eight years at Guantanamo.

Halloween Safety Tips
Have adult supervision. Accompany your kids if you don’t think they’re old enough to trick-or-treat on their own.
There is safety in numbers. If they’re old enough to trick-or-treat without an adult, tell your kids to stay in a group.
Map out your plan. Designate a route before your kids begin trick-or-treating, and make sure they stick to it.
Take the long way 'round. Have your kids trick-or-treat in areas where there are a lot of people around. They should also avoid taking short-cuts through alleys and parking lots.
Try tick-or-treat-friendly homes. Ensure your kids only visit houses with lights on. And, you might also suggest the houses they visit have some sort of Halloween decoration on the porch.
Stay outside. Make sure your kids don’t go inside someone’s house. They can get their candy from the porch.
Remain visible. Dress your kids in a bright costume so others can see them. If their costume is dark, have your kids wear reflective strips or carry a glow stick or flashlight.
Remember, shorter = safer. Goes without saying but just in case you forget, ensure your kids’ costumes aren’t so long that they can trip over them.
Don't cover the face. Instead of masks, have your kids wear make-up so they can see better.
Quality-check treats. Check your kids’ candy before they eat it. Throw out any candy that is not in its original wrapper or looks like it has been tampered with.
Say "no" to strangers. Tell your kids to never accept a ride or go anywhere with a stranger.
Obey the law. Encourage your kids to follow all the regular rules for walking around. That includes looking both ways before crossing, obeying all traffic laws and using cross walks and crossing lights where available.
Have a great time! Finally, make sure your kids have tons of fun and get lots and lots of candy.

Judge Orders Miller Documents Released
A judge ruled Saturday that the Fairbanks North Star Borough must release personnel records of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller.
In an unusual weekend hearing, retired Superior Court Judge Winston Burbank ruled that the public's right to know about candidates outweighed Miller's right to privacy.
"I hold that although Mr. Miller has a legitimate expectation of privacy in those documents, Mr. Miller's right to privacy is indeed outweighed by the public's significant interest in the background of a public figure who is running for the U.S. Senate," the judge said. He noted that U.S. senator is among the highest elected offices in the nation.
[Well, there is one office significantly higher, yet those documents remain tightly sealed and hidden from view.. but I digress --- Editor]

Coons Took 'Bearded Marxist' Turn
An article Democrat Chris Coons wrote for his college newspaper may not go over so well in corporation-friendly Delaware, where he already faces an uphill battle for Vice President Joe Biden’s old Senate seat.
The title? “Chris Coons: The Making of a Bearded Marxist.”
In the article, Coons, then 21 years old and about to graduate from Amherst College, chronicled his transformation from a sheltered, conservative-minded college student who had worked for former GOP Delaware Sen. William Roth and had campaigned for Ronald Reagan in 1980 into a cynical young adult who was distrustful of American power and willing to question the American notion of free enterprise.
Coons, the New Castle County executive who is running against GOP Rep. Michael Castle for the state’s open Senate seat, wrote of his political evolution in the May 23, 1985, edition of the Amherst Student.
The source of his conversion, Coons wrote, was a trip to Kenya he took during the spring semester of his junior year—a time away from America, he wrote, that served as a “catalyst” in altering a conservative political outlook that he was growing increasingly uncomfortable with.
“My friends now joke that something about Kenya, maybe the strange diet, or the tropical sun, changed my personality; Africa to them seems a catalytic converter that takes in clean-shaven, clear-thinking Americans and sends back bearded Marxists,” Coons wrote, noting that at one time he had been a “proud founding member of the Amherst College Republicans.”

Bob Ehrlich Endorsed By The Prince George's County Volunteer Fire And Rescue Association
ANNAPOLIS—Bob Ehrlich today accepted the endorsement of the Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association (PGCVFRA) for Governor of Maryland. The PGCVFRA represents 38 volunteer fire and rescue operations county-wide.
“It is a tremendous honor to receive this endorsement,” said Ehrlich. “Throughout my entire career, I have been deeply committed to supporting those brave Marylanders who volunteer to put their lives on the line everyday in the interest of saving the lives of others. Their selfless actions show us time and time again the profound difference volunteers of this magnitude can make. As governor, I will continue to fight for Maryland’s volunteer and career fire and rescue personnel. I will fight everyday for policies that support, instead of minimize, the tremendous role these men and women play in our state.”
“Governor Bob Ehrlich has demonstrated a commitment to and understanding of the value and importance of maintaining a society and environment that promotes a combination fire department including volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel,” said the Chief Pete Mellits. “Governor Ehrlich was endorsed because of his steadfast support over his many years in public service to the fire service. He has always been a strong advocate for public safety and the emergency services in Maryland.”

The JMB Clippers Volleyball program finished the 2009 regular season with a 13-3 record. They lost in the second round of the State 3A Playoffs to Wilde Lake High School. Five of their players were named to the All-Bayside Team. This season they have continued with similar success. The Lady Clippers currently have a 10-2 record. Coach Emge hopes that supporting a cause such as the "The Side-Out Foundation" will help bring his team together and solidify them into a championship caliber squad. "It’s not every day that you feel like you’re making a difference. From our efforts so far, I can say that it feels good. I can’t wait to see the final outcome of our efforts on Wednesday night."
Side-Out Foundation
The Side-Out Foundation, a national 501(c)(3) located in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area. They have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Breast Cancer research nationally through volleyball tournaments, clinics, and rallies. Funds are currently devoted to targeted therapies and molecular profiling which is where there is a hot bed of research activity. Side-Out also devotes a portion of the funds to local and national "Life with Cancer" support organizations.
Their name underscores the purpose of the organization – "Side-Out" in volleyball occurs when one team wins a point while its opponent is serving, thereby regaining serve or control of play. Likewise in the war against breast cancer, the Side-Out Foundation will support health care professionals in their pursuit of practical solutions for women and men with this dreaded disease thus enabling those affected to regain control of their lives and living them to the fullest.

Now Or Never Bus Tour
The AFP traveled all over the state last week educating the public on state politics. In fact, Andy Harris announced the unemployment increase at the Salisbury stop before I had received any information on the Internet.
The one thing I enjoyed most about this particular event was the NEW FACES. It would seem the masses are finally awakening.
Woman Set On Fire In Laurel
A woman is being treated for severe burns after being set on fire in Laurel, Md. Saturday.
It happened around 2:45 p.m. in a wooded area near Gorman Rd.
An anonymous witness reported the crime to police from a grocery store near the woods.
Officers rushed to the woods and found the woman. She was rushed to Bayview Burn Center.
Finding the suspect took a bit longer. Police set up a perimeter near Gorman Road. After about two hours, they tracked him down on Greenwood Place.
Police are still working to identify the suspect. The victim’s identity has not been released.
Campaign Provoked Random Acts Of Strangeness
The 2010 midterms should go down as the election that brought the fringe to the fore and gave an angry nation an Aqua Buddha and the “Rent Is Too Damn High” political party.
With just over a week to go, the real race is on for the season’s strangest election vignette.
Contenders include Delaware Republican Christine O’Donnell’s musings on witchcraft and masturbation, New York Republican Carl Paladino brawling with a journalist, and a late entrant to the field, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid defending his “manhood” on cable.
“People in Nevada know me. From the street to the ring to the Senate chambers, I’ve never had to prove my manhood to anyone,” Reid told MSNBC.
Last week, a Republican House candidate from Dallas suggested on television that an armed overthrow of the government shouldn’t be ruled out. He was not the first to do so.
“Our nation was founded on violence,” Stephen Broden, a Dallas minister, told WFAA-TV. “The option is on the table.”
Sharron Angle, Reid’s Tea Party-backed opponent in Nevada, earlier called for “Second Amendment remedies” to deal with Congress, adding “the first thing we need to do is take Harry Reid out.” She didn’t mean on a date.
“Americans are deeply unhappy about this economy and when people are unhappy, they are willing to roll the dice and sometimes vote for people who are just loopy, because the feeling is let’s stick it to the system,” said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics.
In Ohio, Republican House candidate Rich Iott had to answer for dressing like a Nazi. Colorado Republican gubernatorial nominee Dan Maes suggested a municipal bicycle-sharing program was part of a larger United Nations plot against America.
“It’s definitely more nuts this year,” said Cindy Rugeley, a political scientist at Texas Tech University. “People are so mad, they are just picking the candidate that is not the common denominator and putting them on the ballot.”

Israel To Palestinians: Talks Are The Only Option
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday cautioned the Palestinians against taking unilateral action in their efforts to establish an independent state, saying that only direct talks could bring peace to the region.
Mr. Netanyahu also said he was working with the United States on ways to revive the talks, which stalled just weeks after their launch because of disagreements over Israeli settlement construction.
As the stalemate drags on, the Palestinians have said they are considering sidestepping Israel by seeking U.N. Security Council recognition of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem — territories the Jewish state captured in the 1967 Mideast war.
At the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting, Mr. Netanyahu spoke out against such an approach and called on the Palestinians to "honor their obligation to engage in direct negotiations."
"I think any attempt to circumvent it by going to international bodies isn't realistic and won't advance true peacemaking in any way," Mr. Netanyahu said. "Peace will be achieved only through direct talks."
Palestinian officials said they don't expect President Mahmoud Abbas to take drastic action before next September, President Obama's target date for reaching an agreement. But they said Mr. Abbas already has started to prepare for other options.

NY Times: Democrats Backing Fake Tea Party Candidates
Increasingly desperate and fearful of a GOP takeover of Congress, the Democratic Party is secretly supporting fake tea party and other third-party candidates in the hopes of diverting votes from Republican contenders.
The stunning conclusion was made in a page one New York Times story headlined “Democrats Back Third Parties to Siphon Votes” – a report by correspondent Jim Rutenberg and published in Saturday editions of the paper.
The Times reported: “The efforts are taking place across the country with varying degrees of stealth. And in many cases, they seem to hold as much risk as potential reward for Democrats, prompting accusations of hypocrisy and dirty tricks from Republicans and the third-party movements that are on the receiving end of the unlikely, and sometimes unwelcome, support.”
“It is one of the dirtiest moves,” Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., told the Times. “It’s not as though the Democrats are playing to compete against the third party — they’re helping to build the third party up to make those votes not count.”
The Times detailed numerous races across the U.S. where a “Tea Party” candidate has been working to siphon votes from the Republican candidate. In a close race this third party effort could throw the election to the Democrat.
Arguably, the most serious effort is taking place in Nevada where the Times says supporters of Harry Reid are backing a “Tea Party” candidate named Scott Ashjian.

Public Broadcasting Gets 15 Percent Of Its Funds From The Taxpayer
At the request of Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., the non-partisan Congressional Research Service has produced a short report on how much NPR and PBS together receive from the taxpayer via the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The answer for the current fiscal year (2011) is $430 million.
Federal funds make up about 13.7 percent of the revenue from public broadcasting. By comparison, about 24.4 percent comes from “viewers/listeners like you,” with the remainder coming from business and foundation grants.
In the news release announcing this report, DeMint hardly hides his contempt for NPR’s recent decision to fire Juan Williams. But it is much more difficult to argue with the notion that government-funded journalism is an expensive anachronism:
“We can’t keep borrowing hundreds of millions of dollars from China each year to fund public radio and public TV when there are so many choices already in the market for news and entertainment. If CPB is defunded, taxpayers will save billions. This is just one of the many cuts Congress should make next year.

'Fart Spray' Prank Could Lead To Md. Students' Expulsion
Two students who released a foul-smelling odor while riding a school bus last week could face suspension or expulsion from their school, according to a letter sent to parents by Middletown High School Principal Jay Berno.
Each student was charged with reckless endangerment and disturbing school activities and released to the custody of a parent, said Maryland State Police Cpl. Matthew Cantwell. The case has been referred to the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services, Cantwell said.
The Department of Juvenile Services declined to comment this week.
The incident occurred as the bus was traveling on U.S. 15 north of Jefferson Street at about 2 p.m. Oct. 14. The bus was carrying 36 students at the time.
State's Attorney Charlie Smith also declined to comment, citing the confidential nature of juvenile cases.
The driver of the school bus vomited as a result of the odor, Cantwell said.

DRUNK DRIVER ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT ON TROOPER
(MECHANICSVILLE, MD) – A suspected drunk driver operating a stolen vehicle is in jail in St. Mary’s County after he assaulted a state trooper following a vehicle pursuit last night.
The accused is identified as John R. Collins, 28, of Mechanicsville, Md. He is charged with second degree assault, resisting arrest, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, DUI, fleeing and eluding, and related motor vehicle offenses. He has been incarcerated in the St. Mary’s County Detention Center on $53,500 full bond.
Shortly after 8:30 p.m. yesterday, Trooper First Class Jeffrey Gibson of the Leonardtown Barrack was on patrol in the north end of St. Mary’s County when he attempted to stop a 1992 Ford pickup, occupied by a driver and four passengers, for a traffic violation. The driver refused to stop and a pursuit ensued.
The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Collins, attempted to turn into a driveway on Asher Road, east of Cox Drive in Mechanicsville, when he lost control and the truck crashed into a wooded ravine. All five persons in the truck ran from the vehicle.
TFC Gibson ran down Collins on foot and attempted to take him into custody. Despite having sustained injuries in the crash, Collins immediately assaulted the trooper. The trooper prevailed and was able to take Collins into custody, despite sustaining injuries to his head and face.
Both TFC Gibson and Collins were flown by Maryland State Police helicopters to the Prince George’s Hospital Center. TFC Gibson was treated and released shortly before midnight. Collins was treated and released into State Police custody about 12:30 a.m. today.
Two of the juveniles were transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital. They were believed to have minor injuries.
Further investigation revealed the pickup truck had been stolen from Mechanicsville. No charges were filed last night against any of the juveniles, but the investigation is continuing

BALTIMORE SUN ENDORSES KRATOVIL
The 1st District deserves an independent voice
October 24, 2010
Rep. Frank Kratovil went to Washington promising to put his constituents above his party, and he's accomplished that. On the biggest issues of the last two years, he has voted with Democrats when he believed that has been the right thing for his constituents, and he has voted with Republicans when he's thought that was the right thing to do. He has stood up for the environment and economic development in his district and against bank bailouts, the federal budget and the health care reform law. He is the rare politician who has scored endorsements from groups as diverse as the League of Conservation Voters, the Chamber of Commerce and the National Rifle Association. We don't always agree with him, but there can be no doubt that he carries on the fine tradition of his Republican predecessor, Wayne Gilchrest, as an independent-minded congressman for the 1st District.
The same cannot be said for his opponent, state Sen. Andy Harris, who developed a reputation for unrelenting partisanship in his years in Annapolis. Many voters are angry about the direction of the country and of the Congress, and Mr. Harris gives strong voice to that anger, just as he has been the leader of conservative Republicans in the Senate. But in his time in Annapolis, Mr. Harris has shown a preference for scoring ideological points over solving problems. The result is not just shown by the lack of major legislation bearing his name. In fairness, it is difficult for a Republican in very Democratic Annapolis to push through many bills. But Republicans can and do exert influence through compromise and negotiation to make legislation less liberal, and that is where he has truly failed. When there's a choice between being a constructive part of the process and standing outside it and throwing rocks, Mr. Harris throws rocks.
Amid all the big-dollar negative advertising in this race, it has been tough to get at a discussion of the issues, but in an interview with The Sun's editorial board, Mr. Kratovil displayed a tendency toward pragmatism. (Mr. Harris declined an invitation to meet with the board; he was the only candidate of either party to do so this year.) On deficit reduction, Mr. Kratovil favors a balance between reducing spending and weeding out tax breaks. On the environment, he sees a role for the federal government in making sure all states in the region — not just Maryland — take the steps necessary to restore the Chesapeake Bay. He sees energy legislation as not just a means to protect the environment but also as a tool of job creation and national security. On immigration, he favors not just beefing up border security but also going after employers who hire illegal aliens.
Any voter who looks at Mr. Kratovil's record is bound to find something to disagree with, and we're no exception. But he keeps his own counsel and is more interested in finding solutions than scoring political points. If voters are interested in someone who can vent their anger, Mr. Harris is their man. But we think the district would be better served by someone who will actually try to fix what they're angry about, and the candidate who will do that is Mr. Kratovil. He earns our support for a second term.

In Case You Missed It: RNC Chairman Michael Steele Appears On NBC's "Meet The Press"
RNC CHAIRMAN MICHAEL STEELE: "[T]here is a vibration out here that's unlike anything I've seen before. I've been on my 'Fire Pelosi' bus since September 15th. We get off the bus on October 30th. In that time I've seen a consistent ground swell of excitement and energy toward this election. The voters are tired of the fact that the federal government has not listened to them over the past two years, has moved in its own direction, at its own rhythm and they want to pull back on that. I think you're going to see a wave, unprecedented wave on election day that's going to surprise a lot of people." (NBC's "Meet The Press," 10/24/10)
STEELE: "I think [these midterms] puts us all in a point where, you know, you kind of look down the road to 2012 and say, for the Republicans, what kind of leader is going to emerge to deal more precisely with the economy, with our relations overseas, with, you know, those concerns that people have about jobs here in the country." (NBC's "Meet The Press," 10/24/10)
STEELE: "[W]e philosophically disagree with the direction the President is going. The spending, the debt, the deficit, the burden that's been placed on the backs of future generations is unsustainable. We see that the administration, along with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, are whistling past that graveyard, ignoring the hard facts that we cannot sustain nor afford the continued spending policies of this administration." (NBC's "Meet The Press," 10/24/10)
STEELE: "You'll see over the next two years, I think, the President try to step up his game a little bit. But we'll be there, step for step on all of these issues, clearly delineating the difference between a government that wants to take and redistribute wealth and a free people who are there to create that wealth and save it for the future." (NBC's "Meet The Press," 10/24/10)

MDGOP Statement On The Baltimore Sun Poll
ANNAPOLIS – Maryland Republican Party Spokesman Ryan Mahoney released the following statement today in response to the OpinionWorks poll conducted for the Baltimore Sun:
"Today’s poll from the Baltimore Sun runs contrary to every poll from the last month showing Bob Ehrlich closing the gap with Martin O’Malley. It’s difficult for Maryland voters to take seriously, a poll conducted by the same pollster that the O’Malley lackeys at Center Maryland hired to prop up their former boss earlier this summer. This election is about solutions for making Maryland stronger and Bob Ehrlich has laid out a plan, while Martin O’Malley has run a year long smear campaign to distract from his failed record. Next week on Election Day, Maryland voters will conduct the only poll that matters in this race and I’m confident they will choose Bob Ehrlich and his vision for restoring Maryland’s economy.”
Briefing Points On Baltimore Sun Poll
· The Sun poll published today is in total conflict with the trend over the past month showing Bob Ehrlich consistently closing the gap with Martin O’Malley.
· A month ago, a Washington Post poll showed Bob Ehrlich down by 11 points. Two weeks ago, a Rasmussen poll showed Bob Ehrlich narrowing O’Malley’s lead to 8 points. Just four days ago, a Gonzales poll showed Bob Ehrlich closing the gap yet again to just five points. After six months of dishonest attack ads from Martin O’Malley – and his failure to propose any new ideas for Maryland – Bob Ehrlich has consistently closed the gap with a concrete plan to get Maryland working again.
· Bob Ehrlich takes clear momentum in to the final 10 days of this campaign.
o Fundraising: Yesterday it was reported that Bob Ehrlich nearly doubled Martin O’Malley in fundraising for the second consecutive reporting period. Not only did Ehrlich raise more money than O’Malley ($2.8 million to $1.6 million), but he also has a sizeable advantage in cash in the bank ($1.7 million to $1.1 million.)
o Economic Stagnation: Maryland’s unemployment rate rose for the second straight month in September to 7.5% as the private sector continues to shed jobs in Maryland. Maryland’s economic woes are in stark contrast with Martin O’Malley’s dishonest campaign rhetoric and reinforce O’Malley’s failure to create one single job in Maryland over the last four years.
o Endorsements: Bob Ehrlich is picking up several endorsements in the closing days of the campaign, including former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the Maryland Fraternal Order of Police, The Gazette Newspapers, and the Patuxent Newspapers. In its endorsement, The Gazette wrote, “Ehrlich is the best candidate to take on Maryland's unavoidable financial problems, all while maintaining quality schools, investing in vital transportation improvements, protecting basic human and health services and restoring a can-do business climate.”
· Bob Ehrlich is running to bring strong leadership to the governor’s office. His agenda of more jobs, lower taxes, and less spending is exactly what Maryland needs to move past Martin O’Malley’s legacy of record job losses, record deficits, and record tax increases.
STATEMENT FROM O'MALLEY-BROWN CAMPAIGN ON BALTIMORE SUN POLL
Baltimore, MD (October 23, 2010) -- In response to today's Baltimore Sun poll which shows O'Malley with a 14 point lead over Ehlich, O'Malley-Brown Campaign Manager Tom Russell issued the following statement:
"The latest Baltimore Sun poll shows that Maryland families are rejecting Bob Ehrlich's failed policies of the past in favor of Martin O'Malley's plan to move Maryland forward. With Maryland citizens already casting early votes, we fully expect Bob Ehrlich to become increasingly more desperate and negative as he tries to save his 24-year political career. Maryland families know what's at stake in this election--they don't want to go back."
Andy Harris Receives 60 Plus Association Award
SEVERNA PARK, Md. – Andy Harris won the 60 Plus Association’s Honorary Guardian of Seniors’ Rights award, given to those running for office and based on their views of seniors’ issues.
“Washington must work to protect senior citizens from an overreaching government and an overbearing tax burden,” said Andy Harris. “The 60 Plus Association works to keep government fiscally responsible so our seniors can keep the money they’ve earned and pass it onto their children. I'll live up to the Honorary Guardian of Seniors’ Rights award and fight for seniors in Washington.”
“Andy Harris can always be counted on to protect Social Security and Medicare,” said Pat Boone, national spokesperson for the 60 Plus Association. “Andy Harris will be a tax cutter, protecting the pocket books of senior citizens. 60 Plus calls on nearly 5.5 million seniors nationally for support, so I believe I can speak on behalf of seniors when I say that they can count on Andy Harris. Clearly, seniors will have no finer friend in Congress than Andy Harris.”
The 60 Plus Association is an 18-year-old nonpartisan organization working for death tax repeal, saving Social Security, affordable prescription drugs, lowering energy costs and other issues featuring a less government, less taxes approach as well as a strict adherence to the constitution. 60 Plus calls on support from nearly 5.5 million citizen activists.
