Wicomico County/Salisbury, Md.—The efforts of Wicomico County/Salisbury civic and community leaders were honored today when America’s Promise Alliance (the Alliance), the nation’s largest partnership organization dedicated to youth and children, announced the city had been named a winner of the Alliance’s 100 Best Communities for Young People (100 Best) competition presented by ING, a global financial services company and leading provider of retirement plans and programs for teachers. Its 2010 recognition marks the fourth win for Wicomico County/Salisbury in the competition.

The 100 Best designation recognizes those communities that make youth a priority by implementing programs that help keep children in school and prepare them for college and the 21st century workforce. The competition is open to all communities that make children and youth a priority, including small towns, large cities, counties and school districts. In addition to enhancing local educational opportunities, most winning communities have taken steps to facilitate improved access to health care for its young people, encourage youth civic engagement and supply developmental resources that create better places for young people to live and grow. The entire 2010 list of 100 Best Communities for Young People and their accomplishments can be found at www.americaspromise.org/100Best.

“Through its innovative and far-reaching programs, Wicomico County/Salisbury is taking bold and effective steps to help their young people graduate and lead healthy, productive lives,” said Marguerite W. Kondracke, America’s Promise Alliance president and CEO. “Wicomico County/Salisbury serves as an example to inspire and educate other communities across the nation to tackle the challenges facing their city and children, and to implement initiatives that give them the essential resources they need to succeed in life.”

Wicomico County was named one of the nation’s 100 Best for its public and private partnerships to prepare its young people for success. Each year the Wicomico Partnership for Families and Children, composed of 25 members from business and child service organizations, provide more than 1,000 youth leadership and development activities and services for young people up to age 24. Other programs such as Salisbury’s Promise: Alliance for Youth initiates partnerships between schools and faith-based groups to recruit mentors, develop leadership training academies, and offer afterschool tutoring to encourage academic success.

Wicomico County continues to make progress towards increasing its graduation rate. The Wicomico County Mentoring Project places caring adults in schools to support teachers and further motivate youth to achieve. Schools participating in the program have seen an increase in student attendance and fewer behavioral concerns. Other programs, such as Kids of Honor, have encouraged participants to excel academically. In fact, 100 percent of participants in Kids of Honor graduate on time or ahead of their peers.

Upon being informed of the “100 Best” designation, Wicomico County Executive Richard M. Pollitt, Jr., said, “I am absolutely delighted to join Mayor Ireton in celebrating our 4th selection in 5 years as one of America’s ‘100 Best Communities for Young People.’ I salute Dr. George Whitehead and all of our dedicated citizens who have worked so hard to make Wicomico County and Salisbury a place of hope and promise for our most valuable asset, our young people. While it is wonderful to receive awards and recognition, the best thing about this is that our community is, as Ms. Kondracke stated, consistently giving our youth the essential resources they need to succeed in life.”

Salisbury Mayor James Ireton said, “This is great news! Our 100 Best Communities for Young People award is possible due to our greatest asset: our citizens. On the heels of Salisbury’s All-America City award, national experts know that this community is moving forward, facing challenges, and continuing the investment in our young people. Congratulations, Wicomico County!”

On September 21, 2010, Wicomico County/Salisbury and the other winners spanning 37 states were recognized at a ceremony in front of the Washington Monument on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Each of the winning communities was formally recognized with a designation on a map of the U.S., illustrating the geographic and demographic diversity of the winning 100 communities. In addition to the 100 Best distinction, Wicomico County/Salisbury and the other top communities will receive two road signs identifying the city as one of 100 Best, as well as a trophy to be presented to local officials later this year.

Alliance Chair Alma Powell and President and CEO Marguerite W. Kondracke revealed the list of winners during the national celebration. They were joined by Rhonda Mims, president of the ING Foundation and senior vice president, ING’s Office of Corporate Responsibility and Multicultural Affairs and Twilight’s Kellan Lutz, who both share a passion for the development of young people.

“ING is committed to children’s education and to the advancement of education initiatives that prepare them for successful futures,” said Mims. ”Our support for 100 Best demonstrates our goal of honoring communities like Wicomico County/Salisbury that produce real, measurable results for improving the lives of young people.”

The competition is one element of the Alliance’s Grad Nation campaign, a 10-year initiative to mobilize all Americans to take action in their communities to end the high school dropout crisis and prepare young people for college and the 21st century workforce. More than 7,000 students drop out each school day in the U.S., resulting in 1.3 million young people a year. To help decrease these numbers, the Alliance is more committed than ever to recognizing communities – regardless of size, location or history – that are taking real action to help more young people stay in school and graduate on time.

“100 Best is an essential building block of an inspiring national movement that gives everyone a chance to ensure every young person graduates,” said Powell. “These winning communities refuse to let the challenges they face be the determining factor in the lives of their children and youth. Instead, they are helping to build an infrastructure of assertive, successful and dynamic young people that are the future of this country.”

Don't Believe The Hype

What happens when a politician doesn't have a record to run on? He makes false, negative attacks against his opponent.

Unfortunately, Politician Frank Kratovil has done that to Andy Harris.

Frank Kratovil has no record to run on. He's voted 85% of the time with Nancy Pelosi and he's hiding from that. He's hiding from the radical energy tax that he voted for. He's hiding from the rising unemployment rate in Maryland's First District. Frank Kratovil is even hiding from his own party!

To cover for his lack of a record, Frank Kratovil has launched a false, negative attack against Andy Harris. The independent site, factcheck.org, calls this line of attack "misleading" and "false," explaining the proposal would "repeal the federal income tax entirely and do away with the Internal Revenue Service. It would also eliminate gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare and self-employment taxes."

Here are the facts on Andy Harris's record:

Andy Harris signed a pledge 12 years ago not to raise taxes and he's kept his word.

Andy Harris supports lower, fairer taxes

Andy Harris has consistently voted against proposed tax increases in the Maryland state Senate and will do so as a Member of Congress.

Andy Harris has a proven record of fighting against wasteful government spending and has taken a no-earmarks pledge.

Andy Harris's first vote in Congress will be to fire Nancy Pelosi.

Frank Kratovil should take a look at his own record. Kratovil voted for the Cap and Trade Energy Tax, which would demolish the agriculture industries, kill jobs, and raise taxes $1,600 per year for every single household in the First District.

Here are the facts on Frank Kratovil's Energy Tax:

Democratic Congressman John Dingell said that "Cap and Trade is a tax, and it's a great big one." ("Dingell: cap and trade a "great big" tax," Politico, April 27, 2009)

The Wall Street Journal said "Americans should know that those Members who vote for this climate bill are voting for what is likely to be the biggest tax in American history. Even Democrats can't repeal that reality." (Editorial, "The Cap and Tax Fiction," The Wall Street Journal, June 26, 2009)

Warren Buffett said on CNBC, "I think if you get into the way it was written, it's a huge tax and there's no sense calling it anything else. I mean, it is a tax. And it's a fairly regressive tax." ("Warren Buffett's Live Lunch Interview on CNBC," CNBC Website, June 24, 2009)

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the tax would be a $1,600 per year cost increase for households. ("Cap-and-Trade: All Cost, No Benefit," Washington Post, June 1, 2009).

The choice in this election is clear. Andy Harris is the kind of leader we need - Frank Kratovil has shown his true colors as just another politician.

Sara Foxwell Case

Joe,

I saw a brief "Clip" with Seth Mitchell and Matt Maciarello regarding the Sara Foxwell trial on WBOC this morning and have a comment. If Matt is elected to States Attorney, he plans to use Davis Ruark to help in prosecuting the case. Seth stated that this is possibly because of Matt's inability to prosecute the case himself! I'm sorry, but I don't see this as an inability! Matt is just as capable to prosecute this case as Seth is! I see it as an opportunity to get a conviction for the Foxwell Family and the Community. Davis has been directly involved in the case since day one and there isn't anyone better qualified to prosecute the case than Davis. Seth stated that if he is elected he would prosecute the case himself. As Thomas Leggs Defense Attorney, I don't think Seth can Legally prosecute the Foxwell Case. Not taking anything away from Seth, but I think Matt and Davis would have a much better chance of a conviction and that is what we all want.

REPUBLICANS COULD SWEEP THE LOWER SHORE THIS YEAR!

Sure, there’s “Dewey Beats Truman” risk in this prediction. But consider the data discussed below, together with the much greater Republican motivation and energy shift away from all Democrat candidates now that the Obama bubble has burst and O’Malley has revealed himself as the wrong person for the job. I’ll take that risk, with the exception of a few races in which an incumbent Democrat is probably unbeatable.

In the Lower Shore the Democratic majority in registration has vanished during the past decade. In 2000 it was were over 50% in all three counties: Somerset – 60%; Wicomico – 51%; Worcester – 51%. By 2008, the height of the Obama bubble, things were much different: Somerset – 57%; Wicomico - 47%; Worcester - 45%. Since then the numbers have not changed greatly, but precise data is not readily available. To be sure, much of the Democrat decline is due to increase in registered “independent” voters.

The shift in political sentiment on the Lower Shore in recent years can be seen in the margin by which Bob Ehrlich carried those counties in 2002, when (statewide) he beat the worst Democrat candidate in recent memory, “KKT”, and 2006, when (statewide) he was beaten by O’Malley. Although he lost his statewide margin and the margin by which he carried most counties where he won in both years was reduced, in two -- Wicomico and Worcester -- his margin in 2006 was greater than in 2002.

In the local and state legislative races, in which there are no credible independent or libertarian candidates, most of the registered independent voters are likely to vote Republican, not to mention the Democrat crossover voters, many of whom will relish the chance to take another shot at O’Malley. These factors will compound the Republican surge that we have already seen in the primary turnout this year – in Wicomico County, there were more Republican than Democrat voters.

Against that background this is how we see some local races:

Charles Otto is a likely winner over McCready by a small margin as Somerset remains the most Democrat of the Lower Shore counties, but the Wicomico voters make the difference.

Michael James will beat James Mathias by a hair for the seat now held by Lowell Stoltzfus.

Norman Conway (a respected Democrat) and Michael McDermott will win in their district.

Rudolph Cane will beat Dustin Mills in their district, where the Democrat majority continues.

Rich Colburn remains unbeatable – some things never change.

In the contested Wicomico County Council races, Stevie Prettyman will win, probably by a mile, and the at-large seats will go Republican (Culver and Holloway) by a comfortable margin over Democrats candidates who want to repeal the tax revenue cap in Wicomico County (Cowall and Taylor). Bob Caldwell will nose out David MacLeod. The only Democrat winner could be Sheree Sample-Hughes, who has a safe district due to the registration advantage there.

The Wicomico County Exec. contest is too bizarre to call at this point, but there is growing “I’m sick of Rick” sentiment. Ollinger, despite his non-existent campaign to date, got more votes (4,853) in the primary than Pollitt (3,621), who faced two opponents. The votes for his opponents (1,803) were mostly cast due to disfavor with Pollitt and could result in Ollinger’s victory if those voters turn out in November. And Ollinger could run a more aggressive campaign in the next month or so – he’s putting up some road signs and having a fund raiser this week that could yield big bucks. Pollitt’s role as O’Malley’s campaign guru in Wicomico County could be a decisive factor (along with that land he wanted the County to buy for $18,000 per acre and his whining about the tax revenue cap, etc.).

Turnout by disappointed Democrat voters could also be decisive in deciding who will become the next State’s Attorney in Wicomico County. Matt Maciarello is actively wooing the supporters of Davis Ruark, many of whom regard Seth Mitchell to be an opportunist mud-slinger. This one could become the gunfight of the 2010 election in Wicomico County.

We are not familiar with the dynamics of the local races in Somerset County and Worcester County, other state legislative races and the Kratovil-Harris race for the 1st Congressional District to make a prediction about them. Those who are qualified to make a meaningful analysis and prediction about any of them are invited to opine.

[primary vote numbers above do not include some absentee and provisional ballots].

Breaking New Ground

When Salisbury News came up with the idea of interviewing all candidates interested in getting their platform message out to the masses, we knew this would set the bar for other media outlets to do the same.

Salisbury News was created because certain information we wanted to get out to the public was rejected by local media outlets. The only way I felt these messages could be heard was by simply starting Salisbury News.

Our audience was very small but we became the talk of the town and eventually, (over the years) we have actually overtaken the daily local traffic. One thing that has delivered repeat visitors is constant daily articles, 7 days a week. The other thing that has proven to bring people back time and time again throughout the day is comments.

It's been a long and difficult road. As many of you know, there's been lawsuits by the Chief of Police, the Mayor and even the Warden. We stood our ground, we fought those battles and while these people bullied others in the past, I was able to afford to fight those battles and win. You stand up to a bully and they will back down. Fortunately for this community, they not only backed down, they went away.

Because we stood up to what we felt was Good Ol' Boy Power, because we provided evidence through documents, video, tape recordings and photos, it was impossible for many to continue steam rolling citizens. The MSM never thought one man with one Blog could ever become as successful as we have and to be completely honest with you, I never thought it would happen either. However, that's where we are today.

The goal, get the MSM to STOP being afraid of those in power. All of a sudden they could go to the Mayor and say, look, it's already out on the Blog, we need to discuss this issue. Mind you, in most cases they still stayed away from confrontational issues but eventually they learned if they want to stay in the main stream they'd have to make some changes.

That being said, I'm VERY pleased to tell you that the Daily Times started contacting ALL candidates to set up times and dates to do 30 minute interviews with the candidates. My hat is tipped to the Daily Times. They are a very powerful resource in this community and it has become vital, (especially in these times) to put these candidates on the record and deliver what they promise.

I know personally how difficult it is to put such a project together. It is very time consuming, yet it's a service you deserve. The DT's makes a lot of money Folks. My guess is that 10,000 people a day subscribe to the DT's. They sell multiple ads for local businesses. They sell obituaries, they make money on classified ads, they make a ton of money on legal ads, you deserve this service and I for one am very pleased they're going the extra mile to do what I feel is one of the most important issues out there, elections.

In the past, many comments have been brought forth to me saying the Daily Times is bias towards certain candidates. I know for a fact they have refused to publish many topics. One example is when Debbie Campbell won a spot in the prestigious Top 100 Women in Maryland. By putting pressure on these media outlets, a new bar has been set. YOU get the opportunity to view and listen to each candidates platform.

I look forward to seeing their line of questions and I can only hope they follow what we started by asking each candidate the SAME questions. I would hope that they do not personalize each interview, time will tell.

Nevertheless, Salisbury News has changed the scope of how news and information will be dispersed and we're very proud of that. All we ever wanted was the truth to get out. We wanted the public to be better informed and I'm very pleased we're all watching that happen.

In closing, one manager with the Daily Times told me 6 years ago, "go ahead, we'd love the competition, it will only make us better." He was right. Keep up the good work Daily Times.

Sand Castles Are Now Illegal

Joe,

Here is a story of how far the corporate gulag has gone down the rabbit hole. In an effort to keep secret the complete destruction of the Gulf of Mexico by BP, it has become illegal to build sand castles. The media cannot allow reporters or camera men to cover the hidden oil - at all costs!

Gold Hits Another Record As Dollar Tumbles On Fed Announcement

It is yet another example of the indispensability of gold as a hedge against the bankster engineered economic implosion. Earlier today, the precious metal reached a new record as the dollar tumbled further on the Fed announcement it will continue its habitual manipulation of monetary policy by keeping interest rates artificially low.

Gold reached $1,290.40 an ounce at 2:43 p.m., according to Bloomberg. At the same time, the beleaguered dollar fell 1.3 percent against a basket of six major currencies. Gold has surged 17 percent this year, heading for a 10th straight annual gain.

Many gold advocates are stunned by the momentum and note that the market will soon reach the psychologically important $1,300 an ounce mark. Analysts believe the price will reach $1,500 by the end of December or during the early months of 2011.

County Revenues Hit Hard By Housing Collapse

Maryland counties are feeling the pain of the collapse of the housing market. From fiscal 2006, the height of the housing boom, to fiscal 2010, they have lost $345 million in revenue from transfer taxes that are charged every time a property is bought or sold.

Revenues to counties from property taxes will be declining soon too, officials said, as the decline in housing prices starts reducing the assessable base for this key source of local funds.

Leslie Knapp, associate director of the Maryland Association of Counties, said there is not much the counties can do to compensate. “They could raise property taxes, but that is politically difficult to do,” he said. “They could charge other fees and taxes – hotels, impact fees – but much of that is tied to economic growth.”

Dollar Drops To Lowest Level Since March As Fed Hints At Easing

Sept. 22 (Bloomberg) -- The dollar slid to the lowest level in six months versus a basket of currencies including the euro and yen on speculation the Federal Reserve’s willingness to ease monetary policy further will damp demand for U.S. assets.

The greenback weakened after U.S. policy makers said yesterday that they “will provide additional accommodation if needed” to spur growth. The euro rose for a third day versus the dollar as Portugal sold 750 million euros ($1 billion) of bonds and investors bought the maximum amounts at Spanish and Irish debt sales yesterday.

“The likelihood of more Fed easing has clearly increased, and that’s hurting the dollar,” said Stephan Maier, a foreign- exchange strategist at UniCredit SpA in Milan. “The market may be getting ahead of itself, anticipating too much easing.”

Novartis Wins U.S. Approval For First MS Pill

Sept. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Novartis AG won U.S. regulatory approval to sell its multiple sclerosis medicine Gilenya, beating Merck KGaA in a race to market the first pill to slow the crippling disease.

The Food and Drug Administration cleared the treatment for use against relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis, the Basel, Switzerland-based company said in a statement. A doctor will have to watch patients for six hours after their first dose of Gilenya, Novartis said. Regulators also recommend checking patients’ blood and eyes before treatment, a demand less restrictive than expected, said Karl-Heinz Koch, an analyst at Helvea SA in Zurich.

“We were like ‘Wow,’” Koch said in a telephone interview. “This is a very good outcome for Novartis. They’ll really be able to stir up the MS market.” Koch said he now believes Gilenya can achieve double his estimate of $1.4 billion in peak annual sales.

Czech Republic Bans Google 'Street View'

Watchdog says mapping feature invades people's privacy

PRAGUE — The Czech Republic's privacy watchdog says Google has not been granted permission to expand its mapping feature "Street View" because it invades peoples' privacy.

The Office for Personal Data Protection last week refused Google Inc. the necessary registration for "Street View" in the eastern European country but did not explain why. Google then considered it a temporary decision.

Office head Igor Nemec says Google uses means that "disproportionately invade citizens' privacy." Nemec said Wednesday that Google also does not have a proper legal representative on Czech territory to handle personal data.

The U.S. Internet giant has come under fire from authorities across Europe over privacy concerns, most recently for vacuuming up fragments of people's online activities sent over public Wi-Fi networks for years while taking shots of city streets.

Recession Drags On In Politically Key States

Democrats face tough challenges where economy defies recovery

The weak economy is leaving many Americans nervous, uncertain about the future and looking for someone to blame.

With midterm elections rapidly approaching, that could be bad news for sitting politicians, especially in states like Nevada that are still in recession, according to msnbc.com's latest Adversity Index . And it could create an opening for newcomers in other hard-hit states, such as Michigan, if they can convince voters they have economic answers.

“When times are bad, that overrides everything else,” said political analyst Rhodes Cook, author of a bimonthly political newsletter.

Although a panel of economists said this week that the national economy emerged from recession in June 2009, the recovery remains weak and uneven. Eight states were still in recession as recently as July, according to the most recent data from the Adversity Index, produced by Moody's Economy.com and msnbc.com.

Elected officials in those hard-hit states are likely to face intense pressure to convince voters that they can improve economic conditions or risk getting the boot. In addition to Nevada and Michigan, the states are Vermont, Rhode Island, Georgia, Mississippi, Illinois and New Mexico.

POT PURVEYORS PRICED OUT?

At some point next year, medical marijuana will finally be available to qualifying patients in the District. The problem? It might be too expensive for anyone to grow it or sell it, much less for anyone to actually afford to buy it.

A comprehensive set of rules and regulations published by Mayor Adrian Fenty's administration on August 6 outline a tightly restricted system where growing, selling and buying marijuana for medicinal use is subject to a number of bureaucratic loopholes. Amongst those are rules, regulations and fees for anyone looking to operate one of the city's five dispensaries (where patients will get the marijuana) and 10 cultivation centers (where the marijuana will be grown). Librarians Like You've Never Seen Them Before

These are librarians like you’ve never seen them before.

“People have this image of librarians as though we’re not like regular people, but we really are,” said Caroline Parr, the Youth Services coordinator at the Rappahannock Regional Library. “We don’t usually dance on the tables, but after hours, who really knows?”

Parr and dozens of her coworkers from all eight branches of the Rappahannock Regional Library put together an over the top remake of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” to make light of budget cuts.

“My friends and family have seen it, they all like it,” said library assistant Janet McConnell. “They’re not surprised I’m acting goofy again.”

Green Party Candidate Struck On Bike By SUV Dies

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - A young Green Party candidate running for the U.S. Senate in Maryland has died after being struck in a hit-and-run accident while bicycling.

Maryland State Police say 30-year-old Natasha Pettigrew died early Tuesday. The Cheverly resident had been struck by an SUV in Prince George's County early Sunday morning.

Police say Christy Littleford of Upper Marlboro was driving the Cadillac Escalade when she struck Pettigrew. Police say she kept driving nearly four miles to her home, even though Pettigrew's bicycle was still lodged underneath the vehicle.

Police say Littleford thought she hit a deer or a dog and didn't want to stop in the early morning hours. When she and her husband found the bicycle under the SUV, they called police.

Theater Chain Fights Back Against Texting During Movies

I don't go to the movies much these days because I'm in NYC, and I don't want bedbugs crawling all over me like that scene in Peter Jackson's King Kong remake. But if I did go to the movies, I wouldn't, because the last several times I went there was always some fool texting within my line of sight. Now a theater chain based in Arizona is launching a nationwide campaign to try to get through to these self-involved types that texting in a darkened theater is wrong.

DEA Will Gladly Take Your Old Drugs Off Your Hands On Saturday

Have you been staring at that half-full (or is it 2/4 empty?) bottle of Vicodin sitting on your bedside table and wondering, "Should I throw this in the trash, take a bunch and pretend I'm Hugh Laurie, or sell them to some college kids for a huge profit?" If so, then the Drug Enforcement Agency has an answer: Give the pills to them during this weekend's National Take-Back Day.

"Economical" Are The New "Astronomical" Numbers

There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's only a hundred billion. It's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers." - Richard Feynman, 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics winner.

Senate Repeal Of Ban On Gays In Military Falters

A Senate bill to repeal the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy appeared headed for defeat Tuesday, a major setback for gay groups that saw the vote as their last chance this year to overturn the 17-year-old ban.

Advocates earlier were optimistic that the Democratic-controlled White House and Congress could overcome objections to the repeal of the law barring gays from serving openly in the military. The move is unpopular among Republicans, military officers and social conservatives.

But in the end, Senate Democrats were expected to fall at least one vote short of the 60 needed to limit debate and advance the legislation.

Sen. Susan Collins, Maine Republican, who was the only GOP senator to support repealing the law and was widely seen as the crucial 60th vote, announced Tuesday that she would not support the bill.

Now, gay rights advocates say they worry they have lost a crucial opportunity to change the law. If Democrats lose seats in the upcoming elections this fall, repealing the law will prove even more difficult — if not impossible — next year.

"The whole thing is a political train wreck," said Richard Socarides, a former White House adviser on gay rights during the Clinton administration.

Media Matters Attacks Rasmussen Tea Party Book

The left-wing organization Media Matters for America has gone on the attack against Scott Rasmussen and Doug Schoen’s new book about the tea party movement.

The pollsters’ book “Mad As Hell: How the Tea Party Movement Is Fundamentally Remaking Our Two-Party System” has shot to No. 2 on Amazon.com’s list of best-sellers in the Political Parties category, and to No. 14 among all books in the Politics category, since it was published on Sept. 14.

But Media Matters’ senior fellow Karl Frisch seeks to disparage “Mad As Hell” in an article on the group’s website, claiming that the authors “lie early” in the book.

Frisch cites a passage in the book’s introduction quoting from an April 2009 Frisch column that states, in part: “Despite repeatedly claiming its coverage is ‘fair and balanced,’ despite its attack on anyone who dares claim or imply the cable outlet tilts to the right, despite encouraging viewers to say ‘no’ to biased media, Fox News has frequently aired segments imploring its audience to get involved with tea-party protests across the country.”

Rasmussen and Schoen state: “All of the above is patently false. In this book, we will set the record straight.”

Frisch asserts that the “patently false” claim is itself false. And he carps: “I defy anyone to give me an example of a bigger megaphone on the right than Fox News. For what it is worth, the tea party protests were promoted or covered on numerous Fox News shows.”

O'Donnell Aide: Obama Is a Secret Muslim

Christine O'Donnell, the 41-year-old tea party darling who won the Republican Senate primary in Delaware, has had on her campaign staff a longtime conservative activist who last year wrote an article suggesting President Barack Obama is a secret Muslim.

According to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission by O'Donnell's failed 2008 Senate campaign and by her current campaign, Jon Moseley has worked for O'Donnell in both of these Senate bids. In a recent statement issued in support of her and disseminated by ChristianNewsWire, Moseley described himself as the manager of her unsuccessful 2008 campaign against then-Sen. Joe Biden. Moseley has also served as a campaign treasurer for O'Donnell during that campaign. [Update: Following publication of this article, Moseley said that he has had nothing to do with O'Donnell's current campaign. But her 2010 campaign filings list a payment to Moseley; he maintained this was for money owed him from the 2008 campaign.] But Moseley is not a political operative. For decades, he's worked for conservative policy groups. A 2008 bio noted that he has been employed by the Heritage Foundation and Judicial Watch, as well as various congressional campaigns. It identified him as the executive director of a group called American Border Control, which says it "works for 100% American control of ports of entry." (In describing its mission on its website, the organization reports it has collaborated with anti-immigration crusader Tom Tancredo "trying to secure American borders.")

GOP Blocks Dems' Gay, Immigration Reform Attempts

Congressional Democrats' last-ditch, pre-election effort to pass gay rights and immigration legislation fell victim to a Republican-led filibuster Tuesday, dealing a setback to those trying to lift the ban on openly gay troops serving in the U.S. military.

The filibuster also ended Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's hopes of attaching an amendment legalizing illegal immigrant children to the defense bill.

Immigrant- and gay-rights groups blasted the GOP move, and Democrats said they might try again later this year. In the meantime, they tried to get the maximum mileage politically out of Tuesday's filibuster, with one Democratic leader accusing Republicans of "cowering" behind procedural rules.

But Sen. John McCain, ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said trying to force immigration-reform and gay-rights debates on the defense bill was more about the upcoming midterm elections than it was about making laws.

"It was a blatant and cynical attempt to galvanize the Hispanic vote in the case of the [immigration bill] and also energize the gay and lesbian vote," Mr. McCain said.

The filibuster likely ends the Senate's major legislative business for the year, leaving lawmakers to pass stopgap spending measures, approve some nominations and finish other odds and ends before facing voters in November.

Two Democrats joined 40 Republicans in support of the filibuster, which blocked the Senate from even beginning debate on the defense bill. The authorization bill includes popular programs such as pay raises for the troops, as well as tackling thornier issues like abortions at military hospitals and the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Senate Trashes Dream Act!

Thanks to the leadership of organizations like NumbersUSA, FAIR, ALIPAC and other citizen groups across our great nation, the Amnesty Dream Act was stopped in the U.S. Senate today. Below is a message from NumbersUSA:

VICTORY!

YOU BEAT BACK CHANCES FOR THE DREAM ACT

SENATE CLOTURE VOTE FAILS

Thanks for all of your hard work in making phone calls and sending faxes the last 8 days.

The Senate just failed by a count of 56-43 to approve cloture, which would have allowed debate to begin on a Defense bill that Senate leaders hoped would include the DREAM Act amnesty.

Because it takes 60 votes for cloture, the Defense bill had to be pulled.

The insistence of Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-Nev.) in using the Defense bill as a vehicle for the amnesty was one of the key reasons why Republicans refused to allow debate on the bill.

Every Republican (except Sen. Murkowski of Alaska who was absent) voted NO.

Sen. Pryor of Arkansas looked to be the sole Democrat who would vote against Reid but, in the end, his fellow Arkansas Democrat Sen. Lincoln also voted NO.

It would be unfair to infer that every Democrat voting YES to start debate supports the DREAM amnesty. We know that on a direct up or down on the amnesty, many of the Democrats would have voted NO. But this opening cloture vote was one that pushed Democrats to show Party loyalty to just start the debate.

I really believe that many of you are in states where you had persuaded your Democratic Senator to vote NO on the DREAM amnesty amendment itself. Good work, all of you.

DREAMER AND HIS DREAM

Let me tell you, Jesse hated this job. And you would too, I imagine, if You had to do it. Jesse was a chicken plucker. That's right. He stood on a line in a chicken factory and spent his days pulling the feathers off dead chickens so the rest of us wouldn't have to. It wasn't much of a job. But at the time, Jesse didn't think he was much of a person. His father was a brute of a man.

His dad was actually thought to be mentally ill And Treated Jesse rough all of his life. Jesse's older brother wasn't much better. He was always picking on Jesse and beating him up.

Yes, Jesse grew up in a very rough home in West Virginia ...
Life was anything but easy. And he thought life didn't hold much hope for him. That's why he was standing in this chicken line, doing a job that darn few people wanted.

In addition to all the rough treatment at home, it seems that Jesse was Always sick. Sometimes it was real physical illness, but way too often it was all in His head. He was a small child, skinny and meek. That sure didn't help the situation any.
When he started to school, he was the object of every bully on the Playground.

He was a hypochondriac of the first order. For Jesse, tomorrow was not always something to be looked forward to. But, he had dreams. He wanted to be a ventriloquist.

He found books on ventriloquism. He practiced with sock puppets and saved his hard earned dollars until he could get a real ventriloquist dummy. When he got old enough, he joined the military. And even though many of his hypochondriac symptoms persisted, the Military did recognize his talents and put him in the entertainment corp.

That was when his world changed. He gained confidence.
He found that he had a talent for making people laugh, and laugh so hard They often had tears in their eyes.

Yes, little Jesse had found himself. You know, folks, the history books are full of people who overcame a Handicap to go on and make a success of themselves, but Jesse is one of The few I know of who didn't overcome it. Instead he used his paranoia to make a million dollars, and become one of The best-loved characters of all time in doing it!

Yes, that little paranoid hypochondriac, who transferred his nervousness Into a successful career, still holds the record for the most Emmy's given In a single category. The wonderful, gifted, talented, and nervous comedian who brought us

Federal Agency Failed To Report Disciplined Providers To National Database

The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, a federal agency, contributed to the gaps in a federal database of dangerous caregivers when it failed to report disciplinary actions as required by law.

The federal agency that administers Medicare and Medicaid contributed to gaps in a national database of disciplined health care providers when it failed to report disciplinary actions as required by law, a new investigation found.

Significant gaps [1] in the decades-old database came to light earlier this year when ProPublica found that many states hadn’t been reporting [2] disciplinary actions taken against doctors, nurses, therapists and other health practitioners as required.

FOUR ARRESTED IN CARROLL CO. HVAC UNIT THEFT RING

(Westminster, MD) – The work of an alert Maryland state trooper who interrupted a theft team early this morning ultimately resulted in the arrests of four people who troopers believe are responsible for multiple thefts of heating and air conditioning units from businesses and homes in Carroll County.

The suspects are identified as Keith A. Gibson, 28, of the 1500-block of Bollinger Road, Westminster, Md., Justin T. Kinzer, 29, of the 1500-block of Uniontown Road, Westminster, John J. Poutre III, 28, and Amber L. Brown, both of the 100-block of South Center St., Westminster. All are charged with theft between $10,000 and $100,000, attempted theft between $10,000 and $100,000, attempted theft between $1,000 and $10,000, malicious destruction of property greater than $500, conspiracy to commit theft between $10,000 and $100,000, and fourth degree burglary. Additional charges are pending. All four were taken late today to the Carroll County Central Booking Center where they will have an initial appearance before a court commissioner later tonight.

Since early spring of this year, members of the Maryland State Police and allied law enforcement have taken numerous reports about outdoor heating and air conditioning units being stolen. Thieves were reportedly cutting the unit’s lines to the home or business and removing the entire unit from the premises. Troopers at the Westminster Barrack had been on the lookout for persons responsible for these thefts. The thefts had increased in recent weeks.

Shortly after 12:00 a.m. today, a K-9 trooper from the Westminster Barrack was on his way to conduct a patrol check on the 900-block of Washington Road, where the lines had been cut to several HVAC units, but they had not yet been removed. He saw a Dodge pickup truck with a trailer in the area. As he pulled into the lot on Washington Road, he saw a Saturn car pull from the adjacent parking lot. The trooper attempted to pursue the Saturn, but then saw the same pickup truck pass the location.

The trooper stopped the pickup truck and found Gibson and Kinzer inside. Gibson initially gave a false name. As a result of further investigation, the trooper had both Gibson and Kinzer taken to the Westminster Barrack for questioning.

Through further investigation, troopers from the Westminster Barrack Criminal Investigation Section identified Poutre and Brown. They were arrested about noon today at their residence as troopers served a search warrant. Brown was found to have a Saturn that is registered to her father.

The investigation at this time indicates Poutre and Brown would locate units to steal and cut the lines connecting them to the buildings or houses. Gibson and Kinzer would use the truck and trailer to pick up the units and transport them to Gibson’s home where they were disassembled. The team would then sell the retrieved copper, aluminum and steel as scrap at a recycling yard. Troopers found some of the materials sold by the team at a local scrap yard in Carroll County today.

Troopers believe the team was attempting to steal five HVAC units from the Hunter Professional Center last night when they were intercepted. Troopers also believe evidence indicates the team stole four HVAC units from a doctor’s office in the 700-block of Poole Road on September 17, 2010. That same night, they attempted to steal five other HVAC units from two other nearby offices.

Investigators are reviewing all their reports concerning similar thefts and have notified the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department and Westminster City Police concerning the arrests. As the investigation continues, State Police investigators will be consulting with the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding additional charges.
