70-year-old woman punched twice in face in New York supermarket, cops say
Cops are looking for two heartless attackers who allegedly socked an elderly woman in the face at a Bronx supermarket because of a misunderstanding on the check-out line, police said on Sunday.
The 70-year-old victim was on line at the Key Food store on Jerome Avenue near West Gun Hill Road in Norwood around 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 28 when she realized she forgot something and told the cashier she needed to quickly grab it.
The woman encouraged the cashier to take other customers in the meantime.
Two men approached the check-out counter just as the woman returned, passed the duo and put the new item down on the conveyor belt, cops said.
The men, assuming that the woman was trying to cut the line, started arguing with the victim before each of them punched her once in the face.

EPA moves to repeal Obama’s Clean Power Plan coal regs
EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt announced Monday that the Trump administration is moving to scrap the Clean Power Plan, the Obama administration's signature regulatory program to curb emissions from coal-fired power plants.
Pruitt made the announcement at an event in Hazard, Ky., casting the previous policy as unfair.
“That rule really was about picking winners and losers,” Pruitt said. “The past administration was unapologetic, they were using every bit of power, authority to use the EPA to pick winners and losers on how we pick electricity in this country. That is wrong.”

500th Person Shot to Death in Chicago This Year
A man shot dead early Friday evening was the 500th person to be killed in city gun violence since the start of the year on a weekend that has left three others wounded in shootings across Chicago.
The city reached 500 shooting homicides about a week later than it did last year, on Sept. 29, 2016, according to data maintained by the Chicago Sun-Times. At this point last year, there had been 511 people shot to death.

Nanny Deep State: Bob Corker Reveals Establishment Effort to Tame Donald Trump’s Agenda
Veteran Republican establishment figure Senator Bob Corker confirmed to the New York Times that the Republican establishment is focused on corralling President Donald Trump and his agenda.
In an interview with reporter Jonathan Martin, Corker said that most Republican senators realized that Trump was a threat to the general world order.
“[They] understand the volatility that we’re dealing with and the tremendous amount of work that it takes by people around him to keep him in the middle of the road,” he said.
After the mild-mannered Senator came unglued on Twitter on Monday, he told the New York Times he was trying to send a message to “the good guys” — Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and the White House chief of staff, John F. Kelly.
“As long as there are people like that around him who are able to talk him down when he gets spun up, you know, calm him down and continue to work with him before a decision gets made, I think we’ll be fine,” he said.

The state passed the nation's most comprehensive law to make drug prices more transparent on Monday. It has also inspired other states to take on the pharmaceutical companies in November.
When California does something, other states pay attention. Not just because it's the most populous state, but also because it's one of the most progressive and has enviably dug itself out of a $26 billion budget hole.
The issue of drug prices doesn't appear to be any different.
On Monday, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed what many say is the nation's most comprehensive law to make drug prices more transparent. It will likely result in similar legislation in other states. And a 2016 California ballot initiative on drug pricing is being replicated on Ohio ballots this coming November.

New Jersey Sues Opioid Maker That Just Settled With Massachusetts
New Jersey on Thursday accused Insys Therapeutics Inc of engaging in a fraudulent scheme to boost sales of a fentanyl-based cancer pain drug, as Massachusetts announced a $500,000 settlement with the drugmaker to resolve similar allegations.
The lawsuit by New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino accused Insys of illegally directing its sales force to push prescriptions of Subsys for a broader range of patients than the opioid drug was approved for, and at higher doses.
The lawsuit, filed in Middlesex County Superior Court, alleged Insys also paid kickbacks, including sham speaker fees to medical practitioners to prescribe Subsys and defrauded insurers into paying for it.

The California hepatitis A outbreak is on the verge of reaching statewide epidemic status, as cases have spread through homeless tent cities from San Diego north to Sacramento.
California health officials have reported that at least 569 people have been infected with the hepatitis A liver disease and 17 have died since a San Diego County outbreak was first identified in November. Cases have migrated north to homeless populations in Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, San Francisco and Sacramento over the last 11 months.
Although local and state authorities have tried to underplay the risks and severity of the outbreak, the most recent annual totals for cases of hepatitis A in the United States was1,390 in 2015, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). California only reported 179 cases during the same year.
The highly-contagious hepatitis A outbreak may have taken root because of the City of San Diego’s efforts in the run-up to Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game held at Petco Park in July 2016 to push the homeless, and the rampant drug and prostitution trade among them, out of the downtown tourist venues. Those effort included locking public bathrooms and essentially relocating the homeless to the congested tent city encampments that stretch for blocks east of downtown near freeway onramps.

Sunday NFL slips again as NFL Ratings Continue to Crater
There’s no real nice way of saying this, but people just don’t seem to care about watching the NFL anymore. On a day that saw a Vice President leave his seat in protest, the ratings for Sunday Night Football once again fell below the number for the previous week.
NBC’s Sunday Night Football earned 10.6/18 in metered market results, that fall constitutes a 3% drop from last week’s numbers. That’s especially bad considering that last week featured a good-but-not-great Seahawks team, and an Andrew Luck-less Indianapolis Colts team, that seemed to be missing 38 starters.
By comparison, last Sunday night’s match-up between an undefeated Chiefs team, and an exciting Texans team playing in a large market, should have done significantly better than the Seahawks-Colts. Such a dynamic might suggest an even more scary trend than the NFL wants to admit.

Almost one week on from the Las Vegas shootings, investigators are now coming around to the idea that killer Stephen Paddock may have have been mentally ill, insiders have revealed.
On Wednesday FBI insiders said investigators believed Paddock may have been in 'mental or physical anguish' based on information given by his girlfriend.
But they didn't believe that his mental situation had deteriorated to the point of planning and executing mass murder.
Now, however, police insiders say that some investigators increasingly believe he was in the grip of a severe mental illness - and that it had been building for at least a year,ABC News reported.

It’s hard to say whether Americans are lonelier now than in the past. But they’re certainly more independent than ever. Almost half of U.S. adults are now single. Americans are waiting longer to get married, they’re having smaller families, and about half of all marriages still end in divorce.

EPA Chief Calls for Ending Wind Tax Credits to Help Coal Survive
Tax incentives for the wind industry should be eliminated, Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt said Monday.
“I would do away with these incentives that we give to the wind industry,” Pruitt said, responding to a question about the effectiveness of renewable energy at an event held at the Kentucky Farm Bureau on Monday. “I’d let them stand on their own and compete against coal and natural gas and other sources."
In a video of the appearance on the farm bureau’s Facebook page, Pruitt said those energy sources should compete in the market "as opposed to being propped up by tax incentives and other types of credits that occur, both in the federal level and state level.”

In 1969, Diana Gartner and other leaders of the relatively new National Organization for Women made a reservation at the Oak Room Bar in New York under the name "Dr. Gartner." The showdown that followed when the women arrived during the establishment’s male-only hours would lead to an early victory for feminism: The storied bar ultimately changed its gender policy.
John Gartner was 10 years old when the incident made headlines.
"It does run in our family to be mavericks,” he said. “Or rebels with a cause."
