WSJ Poll: Americans Losing Faith in College Degrees

A poll published on Thursday by the Wall Street Journal reveals that Americans are losing faith in college degrees.

According to the Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, only 49 percent of Americans now believe that a four-year degree will lead to a good job and higher lifetime earnings. An overwhelming 47 percent claimed that they don’t believe a four-year degree will increase job and earnings prospects.

The findings reflect an increase in public skepticism of higher education from just four years ago and highlight a growing divide in opinion falling along gender, educational, regional and partisan lines. They also carry political implications for universities, already under public pressure to rein in their costs and adjust curricula after decades of sharp tuition increases.

Americans are increasingly concerned about the rising costs of an education. Student debt totals have reached $1.3 trillion, and millions have fallen behind on student-loan payments.

Pets abandoned, chained on leashes, as owners flee Hurricane Irma (video)

As the dangerous storm, Hurricane Irma, approaches Florida, many residents are fleeing to safer areas, but some are leaving their pets behind.

Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control director Diane Sauve has reported the unimaginable: many pets are being left chained to trees and parked cars, as their owners have left them behind to “ride out the storm” on their own.

“They are left in a yard, in a pen they cannot escape from or tethered to trees or poles,” Sauve said in an interview with WPTV5.

So far, 49 dogs and two cats have been rescued by animal control officers.

Three-Vehicle Crash On Road To Assateague Island Under Investigation

(BERLIN, MD) — Maryland State Police are continuing to investigate a three-vehicle crash that seriously injured at least one person and closed the road to Assateague Island late this afternoon.

Identifications and notifications to families are continuing, so the identities of those involved are not yet able to be released. The driver of one vehicle was flown out by Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. today, Maryland State Police at the Berlin Barrack were dispatched to the report of a crash in the 7800-block of Stephen Decatur Highway. Upon arrival, troopers found three vehicles involved, at least one driver who was seriously injured and a crash scene that covered the entire roadway. Troopers had to close the roadway so emergency personnel could conduct rescue operations and so a crash investigation could be initiated and evidence collected.

The preliminary investigation indicates a vehicle may have been traveling southbound in the northbound lane, when it struck two other vehicles. The exact cause and contributing factors remain under investigation at this time.

MD Department of Transportation State Highway Administration personnel are on the scene and are assisting with moving traffic through the area, either through a detour around the scene, or past the crash scene as soon as the debris can be cleaned up to permit this to occur. Troopers and SHA personnel are working as quickly as possible to reopen this road, understanding it is the main access road to Assateague Island.

Organizer Of Protest That Left 5 Cops Dead Arrested For Felony Theft

Officers of the Dallas Police Department arrested Dominque Alexander on Thursday, the black activist that organized the 2016 anti-police protest in Dallas that left 12 officers shot and five dead.

Alexander faces charges of felony theft, stemming from a previous employer who claims the activist received payments between $2,500 and $30,000 from clients without transferring them to the company, the Dallas Observerreported. Alexander was thrust into the national spotlight in July 2016 after chaos erupted in Dallas during a Black Lives Matter anti-police protest when an angry protestor opened fire on police, killing five and wounding seven. Alexander’s Next Generation Action Network sponsored and helped organize the protest.

“I’m so beyond outraged. This is a bogus-ass charge. It’s ridiculous,” Alexander told the Observer. “This is a civil issue. If I owe this guy money, this is a civil issue.”

Lifeguard Charged After Saving 5-Year-Old’s Life, Video Shows Boy Was Underwater For 4 Minutes

The lifeguard who was on duty while a 5-year-old nearly drowned at Chelsea Piers in Stamford on Aug. 3 was arrested on Wednesday, police said.

Stamford firefighters responded to the scene at Chelsea Piers' Splash Zone on Blackley Road at 12:37 p.m.

Zachary Stein, who was one of three lifeguards on duty, had pulled the boy from the water and were performing patient care upon firefighters' arrival.

University announces 100 percent free college to illegal aliens

Emory University, an elite, private institution in Atlanta, Georgia, has rolled out a new program, to be effective for the 2017 fall semester, that will provide free tuition to “undocumented students,” with or without DACA.

The new program, titled, “Need-Based Financial Aid Program for Undocument Students,” is detailed on the school website’s financial aid section.

The average tuition for Emory is about $50,000 annually for American students, and $70,000 for international students. While it is a private university, Emory also reportedly does receive state money.

However, the free tuition is not being offered to legal international students – only to those who are in the United States illegally. Even international students whose visa has expired not not eligible.

Lawyer Says FBI Covering ‘Rear End’ By Not Releasing Clinton Emails

Lawyer Ty Clevenger says the FBI is desperately trying to cover its tracks by not releasing former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s emails.

Clevenger spoke with Tucker Carlson on Fox News Thursday night about his efforts to gain access through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. That request was denied and the lawyer said he originally wondered if former president Barack Obama was still running the FBI.

The FBI told him that his request “wasn’t in the public interest.”

“They’re saying the public doesn’t care,” Clevenger added.

“My understanding of the FOIA law was that the government has to have a compelling reason to deny your right to see public documents,” Carlson, one of the co-founders of The Daily Caller, continued.

As Mayor Rahm Emanuel ramps up his campaign fundraising toward a possible third term, he continues to rely on donors who have received City Hall benefits, ranging from contracts and zoning approvals to appointments and personal endorsements from the mayor, the Chicago Tribune has found.

With the February 2019 mayoral election still a year and a half away, Emanuel has collected $3.1 million in high-dollar contributions. And more than $2.1 million of it — nearly 70 percent — has come from 83 donors who have benefited from actions at City Hall.

Among the contributors: law firms seeking approval for their clients' projects or lucrative bond business for themselves, developers needing City Hall permission to build here, an events promoter negotiating the financial details of a major music festival and restaurateurs wanting coveted space at Chicago's airports.

National Aquarium Releases Rescued Seal Named After Harry Potter Character

BALTIMORE (WJZ)– The National Aquarium in Baltimore released a grey seal Thursday after it was found stranded in Ocean City, Maryland.

The Aquarium’s animal rescue team released “Luna Lovegood” at Gateway National Recreation Area in Sandy Hook, New Jersey after she made a full recovery after being found stranded in Ocean City on May 23.

The female seal was found suffering pneumonia and lacerations from possible bite wounds. She was treated for dehydration and a case of lung worms.

Trump’s Justice Department Lets Lois Lerner Off The Hook

The Justice Department says it will not prosecute former IRS executive Lois Lerner for targeting conservative groups during the 2010 and 2012 elections.

In a letter to top Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee, Assistant Attorney General Kevin Boyd said that after a careful review of the case, DOJ will not pursue charges against Lerner, who oversaw the IRS division that reviewed tax exempt organizations.

“After this process, the Department determined that reopening the investigation would not be appropriate based on the available evidence,” Boyd wrote Texas Rep. Kevin Brady, the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, and Illinois Rep. Peter Roskam, the chairman of the subcommittee on tax policy.

“We have to send a clear message, just because your child gets across the border, that doesn’t mean the child gets to stay,” said Clinton “So, we don’t want to send a message that is contrary to our laws or will encourage more children to make that dangerous journey.”

College student who lied about getting raped begs to dodge jail

The young Long Island woman accused of falsely crying rape against two football players at her Connecticut college was back in court Friday, continuing her bid to dodge jail by getting treatment for an undisclosed mental health issue.

During a brief hearing, a Bridgeport judge granted defendant Nikki Yovino’s request that her lawyer be present as she undergoes a psychological exam that will help determine her eligibility for the jail diversion program.

“She’s hanging in there,” lawyer Mark Sherman told The Post of Yovino, 19, of South Setauket. “She’s looking for a result in this case that would not involve jail time.”
