HB 978 Would Trap Kids in Failing Schools, Governor Calls on Legislators to Sustain Veto
ANNAPOLIS, MD - Governor Larry Hogan today vetoed HB 978, legislation that would mandate weak accountability standards for Maryland public schools, risk federal funding for K-12 education, and trap thousands of children in failing schools.
“We are proud of the many great schools in Maryland, but too many equally deserving children continue to be stuck in schools that are consistently failing them, year after year,” said Governor Hogan. “Last week, the legislature passed a piece of legislation which, if not reversed, would directly threaten Maryland's well-earned reputation as a national leader in education. Instead of racing to the top, we would be trapped in a race to the bottom. This bill would make us one of the least accountable school systems in the United States of America.
“Today I want to make it absolutely clear – I will not sign this bill into law. In fact, I will be signing a veto rejecting this legislation and sending it back to the General Assembly, and this afternoon I am calling on all members of the legislature, from both sides of the aisle, to do the right thing for our kids. Please put aside the politics and sustain this veto,” continued the governor.
The entire Maryland State Board of Education, Maryland State Department of Education, bipartisan education advocates, and the state’s leading editorial boards have joined the governor to oppose this bill and its disastrous consequences for Maryland’s most vulnerable students.

Susan Rice Ordered "Detailed Spreadsheets Of Intercepted Phone Calls" With Trump Team
After it was revealed over the weekend by Mike Cernovich that Susan Rice was the mysterious Obama official behind the "unmasking" of Trump associates, the details behind the extreme measures taken by the Obama administration, including what seems to be personal legal liability for Susan Rice and potentially others, continue to grow more and more disturbing.
This morning, the Daily Caller has provided new details, courtesy of former U.S. Attorney Joseph diGenova, suggesting that Rice specifically requested that the NSA provide her with "detailed spreadsheets of intercepted phone calls with unmasked Trump associates."
“What was produced by the intelligence community at the request of Ms. Rice were detailed spreadsheets of intercepted phone calls with unmasked Trump associates in perfectly legal conversations with individuals,” diGenova told The Daily Caller News Foundation Investigative Group Monday.
“The overheard conversations involved no illegal activity by anybody of the Trump associates, or anyone they were speaking with,” diGenova said. “In short, the only apparent illegal activity was the unmasking of the people in the calls.”
Meanwhile, Retired Colonel James Waurishuk, an NSC veteran and former deputy director for intelligence at the U.S. Central Command, said that the level of coordination required to pull off such a massive spying operation is staggering and would have required numerous personnel from the White House, NSA, CIA, National Security Council, etc.

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz affirms immigrant protections
Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz signed an order Wednesday prohibiting county law enforcement from inquiring about the immigration status of anyone they encounter.
The order also says police and sheriff’s deputies cannot hold detainees past their release dates at the request of federal deportation agents, unless those agents have presented a judicial order.
“We do this because it promotes sound police practices,” Kamenetz (D) said at a news conference. “We want to continue to maintain the community trust among the residents we are obligated to protect. Driving people underground makes us less safe.”
The executive order broadly prohibits discriminating against people or withholding benefits based on their immigration status. It also limits police cooperation with federal authorities “except in the case of a criminal warrant signed by a judicial official.”

There are two divisions to choose from – Division A, a more competitive division, and Division B, which is less competitive. Players must register as a team. There is a $300 program fee per team, with a recommended size of 12-15 players. The league is for men and women ages 18 and older.

FLASHBACK: Schumer Claims to Progressive Group He Led ‘Medicare for All’ Fight, But He Said in 2009 ‘We Can’t Do That’
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) claimed Sunday he led the fight to push the Medicare for all health care reform in 2009, but the lawmaker told MSNBC in 2009 that "we can't do that" and if such a program was enacted, "we'd be broke."
During a strategy call with the progressive advocacy group MoveOn.org on Sunday, Schumer took a question about health care policy in the wake of the recent failed Republican attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.
"Are we going to try and get Medicare for all?" one caller asked. "I mean, that's the next logical step, I think, and that's what you guys were talking about, too."
"Actually, we tried to get Medicare for all rather than the ACA [Affordable Care Act] back in 2009," Schumer said. "I was one of the leaders to do it. People love Medicare. It's a more effective and efficient system, and it actually costs less than a lot of these quasi-public, quasi-private hybrids, and we're going to fight hard for it … It has a lot of support in our Democratic caucus."

Texas surgeon 'sexually assaulted two women'
A Texas surgeon sexually assaulted two women, and harassed one of them by text message afterwards asking what the favorite part of her visit was, police have said.
Dr Donald Okechukwu Ozumba, a sports specialist who has also worked in high schools and colleges, was arrested on Friday on suspicion of sexual assault.
Police were alerted last week, after one of his alleged victims said that he had penetrated her vagina with his fingers while her husband was in the room, the Dallas News reported.
The woman, who is not being named, said that she had gone to OSSM Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in McKinney on April 28, after sustaining a sports injury.

Susan Rice key in 'unmasking' of Donald Trump campaign officials
The Obama administration’s national security adviser played a central role in “unmasking” several Trump campaign officials who had been swept up in U.S. surveillance operations against foreign targets during last year’s presidential election campaign, according to current White House officials and sources on Capitol Hill.
Susan E. Rice requested that names be provided for otherwise unidentified U.S. people in dozens of raw intelligence reports relating to the Trump campaign, the sources told The Washington Times on Monday.
While Ms. Rice’s actions and alleged interest in the Trump campaign appear to have been within her legal authority as national security adviser, the potentially explosive revelation has touched a nerve in Washington and stirred speculation that she could be called to testify on Capitol Hill about Russian election meddling.
“Smoking gun found! Obama pal and noted dissembler Susan Rice said to have been spying on Trump campaign,” Sen. Rand Paul, Kentucky Republican, wrote Monday on his Twitter feed.
As of Monday night, Ms. Rice had made no public comment on the situation, first reported by Bloomberg View and confirmed by the sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity with The Times.

Tens of thousands to be left without option to buy subsidized insurance policy
(DAILYCALLER) — Knoxville, Tenn., could be the first city in the U.S. where Obamacare completely collapses, leaving tens of thousands of people without the option to buy a subsidized insurance policy.
Humana, the city’s only remaining insurance provider on its Obamacare exchange, announced it is exiting the market in 2018. If that happens, Knoxville citizens will be in a rough spot. Unless another insurance provider fills Humana’s place, some 40,000 people in the Knoxville area will likely be left without the option to purchase an Obamacare-subsidized insurance policy, CNN reports.
Knoxville is illustrative of one of the main problems with Obamacare: It doesn’t promote market-based competition. Insurers pull out of marketplaces where it is not cost-efficient for them to provide services, and, as a result, consumers are left with fewer options at higher prices.
