Coach Hal Chernoff Heads To Las Vegas For A World Championship Fight

Main St Gym Coach, Hal Chernoff, heads out to Las Vegas to work the corner of past world Champion Shawn Porter.

Porter fought 5 times in Salisbury including his debut bout. Kenny Porter (Shawn's father and coach) and I formed a close friendship way back when Fernando and Shawn we kids and fought each other in all the big tournaments.

When Kenny and Shawn would come to Salisbury, they always felt at home largely in part because of how the people in Salisbury seemed to like Shawn, his demeanor, and his fighting style. Now they are at the top of their game, and I am very happy for them. So when they called and asked me to help in the corner of Shawn's fight on June 20, 2015 I was happy to accept their invitation.

I will be working as the cut man in the corner so you have to be prepared for anything. As part of the team and a corner, your job is to fall in and help keep everything calm organized and consistent for the fighter. If a cut or cuts happen you have 45 seconds to deal with it while maintaining calm and controlled. The last thing you want to do is get a fighter stressed by being erratic or saying the wrong thing." said Chernoff.

Porter won a world title at the welterweight division and lost a close decision and the title to Kell Brook of England. Chernoff has been a close confidant to Team Porter and has been part of their corner when they fought in Salisbury as well as while Porter held his world title. He is now back in the ring to help Team Porter return to champion status.

Porter is on a mission to regain the title and will fight the ever flamboyant Adrian Broner. Broner held the title before losing it to Marcos Madina. Broner is a flashy fighter that can be antagonistic outside the ring and use dirty tactics at times inside the ring. He is well known for his foul language, explicit gestures and having his hair groomed by his father as he enters the ring.

Porter on the other hand is credited with being an all business fighter that doesn't allow himself to get pulled into the antics of pre-battle hype. One thing is for sure this will be a barn burner of a fight the boxing public has waited to see.

The fight comes on at 8:30 Saturday evening on NBC.

Human Rights Investigators: Israel Adhered to Laws of War in Gaza Conflict

JERUSALEM—A former commander of the German army and 10 other former generals and officials from four continents who investigated the human rights aspect of last summer’s war in Gaza have concluded that Israel scrupulously adhered to the laws of war.

Their statement was released over the weekend, in anticipation of the release by the UN’s Human Rights Council (UNHRC) of a report, which is expected to accuse Israel of war crimes in the conflict.

The foreign group was led by Gen. Klaus Naumann, former chief of staff of the Bundeswehr and former chairman of NATO’s Military Committee. The panel conducted a week-long fact-finding visit to Israel last month at the initiative of a pro-Israel group.

“Each of our own armies is committed to protecting civilian life during combat,” the report, which was submitted to the UNHRC, said. “None of us is aware of any army that takes such extensive measures as did the IDF last summer to protect the lives of the civilian population in such circumstances. Israel not only met international standards in observing the laws of armed conflict but in many cases significantly exceeded that standard.”

Acknowledging that some Palestinian deaths were caused by Israeli errors of judgment, the panel of generals declared that Palestinian militants “as the aggressors and the users of human shields” were responsible for the overwhelming majority of civilian deaths in Gaza.

Israel regards the UNHRC, which has frequently targeted Israel, as “obsessively” hostile and has refused to cooperate with its current investigation.

In a preemptive move, the Israeli government published its own report on the war Sunday, which noted that 4,000 of the 4,500 rockets and mortar shells fired by Hamas and other militant groups from Gaza during the 50 days of fighting were aimed at civilian targets. Hundreds of these rounds, it said, were fired from civilian compounds containing schools, mosques, and UN facilities.

New Campaign Aims to Boost Immigrant Voter Registration

Press conferences on the steps of City Hall announcing grandiose schemes are as common in New York as grimy subway cars. Unfortunately, most of them turn out to be little more than photo ops for politicos and community leaders.

Hopefully, last Thursday’s launching of the “Engaging Immigrant New York City” campaign will be an exception to this sad tradition.

Billed by its organizers at the Civic Engagement Collaborative (CEC) as an initiative to mobilize immigrant New Yorkers in preparation for the 2016 Presidential elections, New York needs the new campaign to be an effective effort.

After all, this is a city where nearly 40% of the residents are foreign-born, over 60% speak a language other than English at home, and about 20% — or 1,480,072 — of all registered voters are naturalized citizens or the U.S.-born children of immigrants.

“Engaging immigrant voters in the electoral process offers a unique opportunity to change the dynamics of civic engagement in the city,” said Murad Awawdeh, of the New York Immigration Coalition. The NYIC is the facilitator of the CEC, a collective of community and social service groups that works to increase civic engagement and modernize New York’s election system.

With these goals in mind, the CEC, along with City Council members Carlos Menchaca (D-Brooklyn), Ydanis Rodríguez (D-Washington Heights), and Helen Rosenthal (D-Upper West Side), makes three useful and achievable policy recommendations.

WAL-MART HAS $76 BILLION IN UNDISCLOSED OVERSEAS TAX HAVENS

Wal-Mart spokesman called the report incomplete and “designed to mislead” by its union authors

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. owns more than $76 billion of assets through a web of units in offshore tax havens around the world, though you wouldn’t know it from reading the giant retailer’s annual report.

A new study has found Wal-Mart has at least 78 offshore subsidiaries and branches, more than 30 created since 2009 and none mentioned in U.S. securities filings. Overseas operations have helped the company cut more than $3.5 billion off its income tax bills in the past six years, its annual reports show.

The study, researched by the United Food & Commercial Workers International Union and published Wednesday in a report by Americans for Tax Fairness, found 90 percent of Wal-Mart’s overseas assets are owned by subsidiaries in Luxembourg and the Netherlands, two of the most popular corporate tax havens.

Units in Luxembourg — where the company has no stores — reported $1.3 billion in profits between 2010 and 2013 and paid tax at a rate of less than 1 percent, according to the report.

Mob of Black Teens Attacks White Family, Media Silent

"Get that white!" -- not considered a hate crime

On the same day that the now media-saturated McKinney, Texas incident occurred when a large group of black teens crashed a pool party and later clashed with white police officers, another black mob in Alabama attacked a random white family with fists and a Taser as they yelled, “Get that white!”

The Dawes family was attacked around 8:30 p.m. at a family-friendly event in the city of Florence that Friday evening. The 14-year-old son was initially hit from behind. He said at first he thought someone bumped into him but then knew better as the fists kept coming. That’s when the father stepped in to protect his son and the mob of 20 to 30 black teens turned their anger on him. The father suffered a broken eye socket and was tased at least 6 times, according to reports.

Nearby, Mrs. Dawes sat in the family vehicle with her 4-year-old son and dialed 9-1-1. She said there was so many of them, she didn’t know what to do. The teens eventually smashed out the back window of the vehicle, spraying glass shards on the young boy.

The Next Great European Financial Crisis Has Begun

The Greek financial system is in the process of totally imploding, and the rest of Europe will soon follow.

Neither the Greeks nor the Germans are willing to give in, and that means that there is very little chance that a debt deal is going to happen by the end of June. So that means that we will likely see a major Greek debt default and potentially even a Greek exit from the eurozone. At this point, credit default swaps on Greek debt have risen 456 percent in price since the beginning of this year, and the market has priced in a 75 percent chance that a Greek debt default will happen. Over the past month, the yield on two year Greek bonds has skyrocketed from 20 percent to more than 30 percent, and the Greek stock market has fallen by a total of 13 percentduring the last three trading days alone. This is what a financial collapse looks like, and if Greece does leave the euro, we are going to see this kind of carnage happen all over Europe.

Officials over in Europe are now openly speaking of the need to prepare for a “state of emergency” now that negotiations have totally collapsed. At one time, it would have been unthinkable for Greece to leave the euro, but now it appears that this is precisely what will happen unless a miracle happens…

Bush says Clinton failed as secretary of state

DERRY, N.H. (AP) — Newly declared Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush is fast out of the gate when it comes to criticizing Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Democratic front-runner.

In his New Hampshire debut as an official candidate, Bush commended Clinton as tough and smart Tuesday but labelled her record as secretary of state "a complete failure" and said she didn't accomplish much as a New York senator before that.

As a presidential candidate, Clinton has run a cloistered operation with limited opportunities to face questions from the press, he said. "It's ridiculous."

The former Florida governor made the comments in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity that could be overheard by those at a town hall event that followed.

Another Fed "Insider" Quits, Tells The Truth

Once more, an "insider" from The Fed exposes the reality of an academic ivory tower clueless of the real financial markets. Former adviser to Dallas Fed's Dick Fisher, Danielle DiMartino Booth speaking in a CNBC interviewslams The Fed for "allowing the [market] tail to wag the [monetary policy] dog," warning that "The Fed's credibility itself is at stake... they have backed themselves into a very tight corner... the tightest ever." As she writes in her first Op-Ed, "The hope today is that the current era of easy monetary policy will have no deep economic ramifications. Such thinking, though, may prove to be naive... All retirees’ security is thus at risk when the massive overvaluation in fixed income and equity markets eventually rights itself."

Extreme Heat, Cool Water Led To Tuesday Morning’s Route 50 Bridge Malfunction

OCEAN CITY — An extreme differential in the air and water temperatures caused the Route 50 Bridge into Ocean City to malfunction early Tuesday morning, but adjustments have been made to prevent a similar occurrence heading into the height of the summer season.

Around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, the Route 50 Bridge was raised and lowered as planned, but the gates that prevent traffic from moving across the draw span were stuck in the down position. The malfunction caused a brief traffic backup, such as it is at 6 a.m. on a Tuesday morning, and many motorists opted to turn around and backtrack to Route 90 to get into the resort.

“The bridge tender raised the bridge, closed it and seated it as usual, but the gates didn’t open,” said State Highway Administration Media Relations Manager David Buck on Wednesday. “It was the first time it ever happened on the Route 50 Bridge. It has happened on other bridges around the state, but never at the Ocean City bridge. It was rectified in about 15 minutes.”
