US Congress Urged To Reject Arms Sale To Bahrain

Washington - More than a dozen U.S. and international human rights and arms control groups are urging Congress to block a proposed 53- million-dollar arms sale to Bahrain, which hosts the U.S. Fifth Fleet, until it ends its crackdown against the opposition and adopts serious reforms.

In a letter sent to lawmakers Wednesday, the groups, which include Human Rights First (HRF), Human Rights Watch (HRW), and the Open Society Policy Centre, said Washington risked losing more credibility, particularly in the Arab world, as a force for freedom if it went through with the sale.

"This prioritisation of security interests over political reform stands in stark contrast to President (Barack) Obama's declaration of support in May to those protesting for freedom throughout the region, when he said: 'If you take the risks that reform entails, you will have the full support of the United States,'" according to the letter.

The percentage of voters who say the economy is their chief concern has been rising for months. Twenty months ago, in late January 2010, a Gonzales Research survey found that jobs and the economy ranked first with 54 percent of voters.

Maryland Young Republicans Oppose Congressional Map

Chairman calls proposal "ridiculous, disgraceful"

The Maryland Young Republicans join the majority of all Marylanders who are outraged by the Congressional Districts proposed by the Governor's Redistricting Advisory Committee.

"The Congressional districts proposed by the Redistricting Advisory Committee are ridiculous, disgraceful, and an insult to each and every resident of the state of Maryland," said Maryland Young Republicans Chairman Brian Griffiths. "The majority of the Committee clearly decided to act in the best interests of their party instead of their state."

"The district proposed by the Redistricting Advisory Committee look like the result of the creation of tie-dyed t-shirt more so than sound public policy," Griffiths said. "Like the districts proposed in 2001, this proposal is nothing short of disgraceful and embarrassing to the people of Maryland. These districts were drawn with absolutely no regard to communities, district lines, or commonality of interests among the constituents of that district. It is certain that Maryland will continue to be recognized as having some of the most Gerrymandered, politically engineered districts in the country."

"In my testimony, I was one of many citizens who urged the members of the Committee to support districts that were compact and truly representative of the people of Maryland," Griffiths said. "It is apparent that the members of the Committee, as I predicted, paid no mind to the thoughts of their constituents when creating this map.The Maryland Young Republicans join our fellow Marylanders in opposing the legislative districts that have been proposed by the Governor's Redistricting Advisory Committee. The people of Maryland should not be subjected to districts that are so gerrymandered for crass political purposes."

Critical to the growth of the Republican Party, the Young Republicans reach out to registered Republicans, 18 to 40 years of age, and provide them with better political knowledge and understanding of today's issues. Since its creation, the Young Republican National Federation and its member groups have established themselves as the premier Republican grassroots organization in the nation, providing essential grassroots support for Republican candidates and conservative issues on the local, state and national level.

Given the advanced age of all of the suspects — the youngest are in their 80s — the head of the German prosecutors' office dedicated to investigating Nazi war crimes told the AP that authorities are not even waiting until the Demjanjuk appeals process is over.

Rick Perry Raises $17 Million In Third Quarter

Texas Gov. Rick Perry raised $17 million during the third fundraising quarter of the year, despite a late entry into the race and a compressed time frame for raising money, campaign spokesman Mark Miner said Wednesday.

The number is significantly higher than the $10 million that the campaign had been floating as its target for the quarter. It is also nearly as high as the $18 million haul his chief rival, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, brought in during the second quarter. And it is likely higher than the $10 million to $12 million Romney is expected to raise during the third quarter.

Poll: Marylanders Disagree On Spending Cuts, Tax Increases As Budget Solution

A majority of Marylanders say the economy is the most important issue facing the state, and the state budget is a crisis or at least a major problem, according to a new poll.

But Marylanders disagree on how to solve the budget problem: cut spending, raise taxes, or a combination of both.

The Gonzales Research poll of 805 voters completed last week found that 21% of the respondents favored cutting services such as education and health care, 30% supported raising taxes, and 34% favored a combination of both to eliminate a budget deficit.

FTC: Downing One Can of Four Loko Is 'Binge Drinking'

Phusion Projects, the marketers of malt beverage Four Loko, have agreed to change their cans to settle claims of deceptive advertising with the Federal Trade Commission. Phusion Projects, the FTC alleged, said one can was the alcoholic equivalent of one (maybe two) beers. The FTC says it clocks in at more like four (or five).

In the FTC's eyes, that means drinking one can of Four Loko, a "supersized, high-alcohol, fruit-flavored, carbonated malt beverage," in a single sitting is the equivalent of binge drinking—defined as men drinking five (women four) alcoholic beverages in the space of about two hours.

Through most of the summer, the smart money in Washington has been betting she would not run–and she’s checking in at just 9% in the latest national horse-race poll. But Palin has a way of proving the experts wrong. She alone has had the name recognition and star power to jump in late and still make a go of the 2012 GOP primary.

QUOTE OF THE DAY 10-5-11

“The wealthy, not only by private fraud but also by common laws, do every day pluck and snatch away from the people some part of their daily living. Therefore, when I consider and weigh in my mind these commonwealths which nowadays do flourish, I perceive nothing but a certain conspiracy of rich men in procuring their own commodities under the name and authority of the commonwealth.

They invent and devise all means and crafts, first how to keep safely without fear of losing that which they have unjustly gathered together, and next how to hire and abuse the work and labor of the people for as little money and effort as possible.”
