Baltimore City Officer Arrested After Eluding County Police

Police say officer was drunk driving, reached for handgun, records show

An off-duty Baltimore police officer was arrested last week after leading Baltimore County police officers on a chase and failing a breath test, according to police charging documents.

Timothy Terrell Smith, 26, a five-year department veteran, is accused of reaching for his handgun as officers forcibly removed him from his vehicle, after he nearly side-swiped a county police cruiser while traveling at more than double the speed limit.

The charging documents state that County police attempted to pull over Smith's black Lexus at about 2 a.m. on Sept. 23 on Liberty Road. He then accelerated and crossed five lanes, cutting in front of several vehicles, and forcing their drivers to brake to avoid crashing into him. He continued to flee for nearly a mile before coming to a sudden stop.

Suspect Attempts To Grab OCPD Officers Gun

On September 27, 2011 at approximately 11 p.m., an Ocean City Police Officer was on foot patrol in the area of the Food Lion grocery store, located at 118th Street and Coastal Highway
.
OCPD Officer Kyle Hayes spotted a male later identified as Ousmane Boubou Idrissa, 42, of Ocean City, exiting the Food Lion Grocery Store. OFC Hayes noticed a bulge under the waistband and front right pocket area of Idrissa’s clothing. OFC Hayes further observed Idrissa was not carrying any grocery bags.

Suspecting that Idrissa may have shoplifted some items from the Food Lion, OFC Hayes approached him and asked what was under his clothing. Idrissa responded he had nothing and attempted to leave the area. OFC Hayes knowing this was not true attempted to detain Idrissa who then attempted to flee on foot.

OFC Hayes pursued Idrissa; a struggle ensued during which Idrissa grabbed OFC Hayes’ holstered firearm at least twice during the struggle. OFC Hayes was able to keep Idrissa from removing the weapon and eventually subdued Idrissa until additional officers arrived at the scene.

Idrissa was treated by Ocean City paramedics for minor injuries sustained during the struggle. OFC Hayes was not injured. At the time of the encounter Idrissa was found to be in possession of stolen Food Lion grocery items. Idrissa was arrested and charged with:

Theft Under $100 (misdemeanor)
2nd Degree Assault (misdemeanor)
Resisting Arrest (misdemeanor)
Attempting to Disarm a Law Enforcement Officer (felony)
Idrissa was seen by an Ocean City District Court Commissioner and is being held on $10,000 bond.

"We sold out of cupcakes, and I think we have some (of the 200) cookies left," Lewis told CNN.

Defense Says Jackson Killed Himself With Drugs

Doctor's manslaughter trial opens with grim photo, audio of singer slurring words

First, prosecutors showed a photo of Michael Jackson's pale and lifeless body lying on a gurney. Then, they played a recording of his voice, just weeks before his death.

Slow and slurred, his words echoed Tuesday through a Los Angeles courtroom at the start of the trial of the doctor accused of killing him. As a worldwide audience watched on TV and Jackson's family looked on from inside the courtroom, a drugged Jackson said:

"We have to be phenomenal. When people leave this show, when people leave my show, I want them to say, 'I've never seen nothing like this in my life. Go. Go. I've never seen nothing like this. Go. It's amazing. He's the greatest entertainer in the world.'"

Census: Many Gay Couples Say They're Married — Even If They Technically Aren't

More than 130,000 checked off 'husband' or 'wife' boxes on their forms

Increasingly visible, the number of gay Americans telling the U.S. census they're living with same-sex partners nearly doubled in the past decade, to about 650,000 couples. And more than 130,000 recorded partners as husband or wife.

Census figures released Tuesday provide a rare snapshot of married and unmarried same-sex couples in the U.S. based on the government count conducted last year, when gay marriage was legal in five states and the District of Columbia. It comes at a time when public opposition to gay marriage is easing and advocacy groups are seeking a state-by-state push for broader legal rights.
