Kratovil Endorses Obama’s “Leadership”

Democrat Frank Kratovil hasn't decided whether to run for his old seat in Congress next year, but he nevertheless made an interesting play Friday by showing up to President Barack Obama's town hall at the University of Maryland. The move appeared to pay off.

Obama, speaking to 1,000 students on the College Park campus -- not to mention a national television audience -- shouted out to the former Eastern Shore congressman three times during the event, which was focused on the economy and the debt ceiling negotiations.

"Former congressman Frank Kratovil is here," Obama said, as he thanked several currently elected Maryland officials in the audience for attending, such as Gov. Martin O'Malley and Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin. "You wouldn't know it looking at him, but Frank is an outstanding basketball player. The Terps might be able to use him, even at this age...He's got all kinds of moves."

Kratovil, a lawyer, was one of dozens of Democrats who were swept into the House of Representatives in the 2008 election that sent Obama to the White House. He was swept right back out in 2010 by Rep. Andy Harris, a Republican anesthesiologist. Despite a fair amount of speculation, Kratovil hasn't said whether he'll run again.

"A lot of his talk is very much where I am philosophically," Kratovil said of Obama's address. "We are very good at getting people elected, but we're not very good at electing people who can lead."

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels.
I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.
I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage.
I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today.
Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past.
I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her.
Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.

A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.
I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.
I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor.
So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors.
So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

Sinepuxent Receipts – Lemon Tea Cake w/ Cherry Topping

This past spring a member of my church, Peggy Tibbitt,  passed away.  No matter how bad Peggy felt, she always had a smile for me and a hug to go with it. Though she may no longer walk this earth, the memory of her will never fade with me. This past Fourth of July I wanted to fix something different and I remembered her receipt for Lemon Tea Cake.  It’s a dense cake with a wonderful butter flavor and blueberries.  I iced it with no-sugar-added cherry pie filling blended with lemon juice. I was so surprised at the number of comments about this simple little desert and decided to share it with you.

Lemon Tea Cake with Cherry Topping

1 stick of butter, salted, room temperature

1 cup sugar

2 large eggs, room temperature

½ cup milk

1 tbsp. lemon zest

1 ½ cups bread flour

1 tsp. baking powder

½ tsp. sea salt

1 cup fresh blueberries

1 can no-sugar-added cherry pie filling

Juice of 1 lemon

Preheat oven to 325 degrees; grease and flour a 9” x 12” glass dish. In an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar together then add eggs one at a time blending well after each. Mix in the milk and lemon zest. Sift flour, salt and baking powder together and then add to wet mixture, blending well. Remove from mixer and fold in blueberries. Bake for 50 minutes. Remove from heat and cover with foil and place in freezer. Two hours before serving, remove from freezer. Blend cherry pie filling with lemon juice and spread over cake.

Update: USPS To Unveil Intentions Some Time Today

The Postal Service is considering closing more than one in 10 of its retail outlets. Postmaster General Patrick Donohoe will unveil the plan today. In all, he'd like to close more than 3,600 local offices, branches and stations. It's all a bid to lower costs for the money-losing Postal Service. Most of the closures would take place in rural areas. But USPS officials are also looking at moving postal services into retail stores, town halls and community centers. It's not a done deal, though. Once an office is selected for a review, people served by that office will have 60 days to file comments. If an office is to be closed, people can appeal to the independent Postal Regulatory Commission.

FAA Partial Shutdown Issues

A new airport tower in Michigan is missing its head. A small airport in Pennsylvania will have to go without a new boiler. Visitors to an airport in California will have to dodge a leaky roof. It's all because the FAA has lost its operating license and is partially shut down. Thanks to a stalemate in Congress, FAA had to halt construction on 62 projects at airports from coast to coast. Work involved new towers, traffic control hardware, and repairs to buildings and runways. 4,000 FAA workers have also been furloughed. There's no end in sight. Representative John Mica, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said there have been no negotiations in the past few days between the House and Senate to resolve the dispute. Tune in as Federal Drive speaks with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood at 6:40 a.m. for the latest update on the partial shutdown.

McDonald's Tweaks Happy Meals To Include Fruit, Vegetables

Instead of offering children the choice of apples or fries, as McDonald's had experimented with in the past, Happy Meals will now automatically include both.
Kids ripping into their Happy Meal box at McDonald's will get something different than the standard hamburger, soft drink and fries that have filled the little, red box for 30 years.
The Illinois-based chain announced today on "Good Morning America"that it will begin serving a fruit or vegetable with every Happy Meal sold in the U.S.
"What we're doing is offering fruit to every child that comes into a McDonald's, so it is an automatic," Jan Fields, president of McDonalds said today on "GMA." "There's portion control, and we recognize the importance of fruit in a child's diet."

Twitter Revolt: Online Anger At Deficit Standoff

"So I was angry," said Jeff Jarvis, a prominent blogger who went onTwitter after watching Congress's failure to make a deal on the budget deficit. He vented a little, and perhaps helped start something.

"I had no grand design on a revolution," he insisted. "I just wanted to get that off my chest. That's what Twitter is for: offloading chests. Some people responded and retweeted, which pushed me to keep going, suggesting a chant: 'F*** YOU WASHINGTON.'"
Word spread, as one person after another "retweeted" Jarvis' message on Saturday evening. By midnight, according the traffic-tracking websiteTrendistic, slightly over one tenth of a percent of all the tweets on Twitter included the phrase "#F***YouWashington."

Wealth Gap Widens Between Whites, Minorities

WASHINGTON (AP) - The wealth gaps between whites and minorities have grown to their widest levels in a quarter-century. The recession and uneven recovery have erased decades of minority gains, leaving whites on average with 20 times the net worth of blacks and 18 times that of Hispanics, according to an analysis of new Census data.

The analysis shows the racial and ethnic impact of the economic meltdown, which ravaged housing values and sent unemployment soaring. It offers the most direct government evidence yet of the disparity between predominantly younger minorities whose main asset is their home and older whites who are more likely to have 401(k) retirement accounts or other stock holdings.

Annapolis Liquor Board Under Fire

Mayor Josh Cohen and several aldermen are calling for the Annapolis' Alcoholic Beverage Control Board to issue higher fines against bars and liquor stores repeatedly busted for illegally selling to underage patrons.Following last month's double fatal motorcycle crash with possible links to underage drinking, they lamented last week that the board had never fined any establishment more than $1,000. They noted that the council doubled the maximum fine last October to $2,000.

"We gave them a bigger hammer for a reason," Cohen said in an interview, asking the board to modify the guidelines it usually follows when issuing fines.
Currently, the guidelines recommend a $2,000 fine only if an establishment is found to have served underage patrons five times in four years. They call for a $500 fine for a first offense, a $750 fine for a second offense and a $1,000 fine for a third offense. If the third offense occurred within 18 months of the second offense, the guidelines recommend a three-day suspension.

Two Invasive Snakeheads Caught in Delaware Waters

Northern snakeheads have been caught in two Delaware waterways in recent months, the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Fisheries Section has announced.

The snakehead is an invasive species that can impact fish, amphibians and invertebrate populations due to their predatory nature, competition for food resources and alteration of established food webs. According to research by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, northern snakeheads and largemouth bass have similar food and habitat patterns, and bass numbers increased as snakeheads were removed from shared waterways.

Last week, an angler caught a 24-inch fish in the Marshyhope Creek near the Route 404 bridge. Last fall, fisheries staff collected a 26-inch long snakehead during electrofishing efforts in Broad Creek just downstream of Laurel. Both fish were adults, weighing between four and six pounds. Both waterways are tributaries of the Nanticoke River, a very popular largemouth bass fishery in Delaware.

EMPLOYEE NOTICE

Due to the current financial situation caused by the slowdown in the economy, Congress has decided to implement a scheme to put workers of 50 years of age & above on early, mandatory retirement, thus creating jobs & reducing unemployment.

This scheme will be known as RAPE (Retire Aged People Early).

Persons selected to be RAPED can apply to Congress to be considered for the SHAFT program (Special Help After Forced Termination).

Persons who have been RAPED & SHAFTED will be reviewed under the SCREW program (System Covering Retired-Early Workers).

A person may be RAPED once, SHAFTED twice & SCREWED as many times as Congress deems appropriate.

Persons who have been RAPED could get AIDS (Additional Income for Dependents & Spouse) or HERPES (Half Earnings for Retired Personnel Early Severance).

Obviously persons who have AIDS or HERPES will not be SHAFTED or SCREWED any further by Congress.

Persons who are not RAPED & are staying on will receive as much SHIT (Special High Intensity Training) as possible. Congress has always prided themselves on the amount of SHIT they give our citizens.

Should you feel that you do not receive enough SHIT, please bring this to the attention of your Congressman, who has been trained to give you all the SHIT you can handle.

Sincerely,

The committee for Economic Value of Individual Lives (E.V.I.L.)
PS - Due to recent budget cuts & the rising cost of electricity, gas & oil, as well as current market conditions, the Light at the End of the Tunnel has been turned off.

Debt Limit - Quotes

March 2006
“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America ’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure.... It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America ’s debt limit.”
--Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.--HYPOCRITE
