GOVERNOR O’MALLEY, SENATOR MIKULSKI TO ANNOUNCE MAJOR STEP FORWARD IN ENSURING BROADBAND ACCESS FOR ALL OF MARYLAND
ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 16, 2010) – Governor Martin O’Malley, Senator Barbara A. Mikulski and the Maryland Congressional Delegation will gather at Emerging Technology Centers (ETC) in Baltimore to announce broadband funds awarded to Maryland by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The funds are crucial to increasing Internet access and capacity across the state, helping create jobs, improve public safety, increase educational opportunities, improve health care delivery and improve infrastructure for BRAC.
The grant award, made to the Maryland Department of Information Technology, will make it possible for the State of Maryland to build new high-speed Internet cable, bringing high-speed Internet to more underserved areas, businesses and homes throughout Maryland.
The event will be streamed live to an audience of elected officials and business leaders gathered at Memorial Hospital in Easton, Maryland. A physician from Memorial Hospital will speak about the benefits of increased broadband. His remarks will be streamed live to the Baltimore event. Memorial Hospital, like many health centers, will benefit from increased broadband as it strives to implement electronic recordkeeping and the sharing of medical records in real time.

Bike Week Is Officially Here
I just returned, (for a little while) from Winter Place Park and the crowd has to be 90% bigger this year than it was at this time last year. Bikes are everywhere and everyone is having a blast.This is one of my most favorite times of the year. Perfect weather, loud Harley's and living proof that motorcycle owners and just great people.
There are plenty of food vendors there as well as merchandise vendors. Tonight would probably be your best night to visit as it will be slower today than the rest of the weekend.
Tidewaterbound, if you think its bad today, wait until tomorrow. They're expecting more than 200,000 bikes. We'll see you on the road Folks! Enjoy but always ride defensive.

Laurel-Wednesday September 15, 2010 Delaware State Police investigated an attempted abduction on the 13000 block of Wooten Road Laurel Delaware.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning September 14, 2010 at approximately 7:45 a.m. The 8 year old child who attends North Laurel Elementary School made the school aware of the incident. The incident was originally handled by Laurel Police Department however it was discovered that it did not occur in their jurisdiction. On Wednesday September 15, 2010 Delaware State Police was contacted regarding the attempted abduction.
Delaware State Police learned that the 8 year old victim Tuesday September 14, 2010 was waiting for his school bus while in his driveway. The victim then observed a newer light red 4 door car pull into his driveway. The white male suspect described above attempted to lure the child into the car. The suspect offered to provide the 8 year old a ride to school. The 8 year old repeatedly refused the suspect’s demands to enter the car.
Following the refusals the suspect then exited his car and a black handgun fell on the ground outside the driver’s door. The suspect is believed to have been alone in his car. The 8 year old child then ran inside his residence and notified his mother. The suspect fled the area in an unknown direction of travel.
Delaware State Police is seeking the public’s help in identify the suspect in this case. Callers may remain anonymous. Tips may also be forwarded to law enforcement through tip lines maintained by Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-333 3 or on line at www.tipsubmit.com.

UTILITY WORK SCHEDULED
Salisbury Public Works Water & Sewer Branch will be closing East Market Street to through traffic between Poplar Hill Ave. and Baptist St. to replace/upgrade a 1.5” water line. The target date is Tuesday September 21, 2010; inclement weather date will be the following day. This closure will begin at 7:00 AM and traffic is expected to return to normal flow by 4:30 PM.
Parking lot # 16 will remain accessible from both the Baptist St. and Poplar Hill entrances.

Johns Hopkins hospital on lockdown after doctor shot
Doctor's condition unknown, Baltimore emergency services on the scene
A spokesman for Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore says a man who shot a doctor there and barricaded himself in a room has been caught.
Spokesman Gary Stephenson says the shooting was on the eighth floor of the main hospital building. He says that floor remains locked down.
Earlier, Baltimore police said the hospital was being evacuated.
Police say they do not know the doctor's condition.

DID RUARK’S SLAP AT SAM VINCENT RESULT IN THE MITCHELL MIRACLE?
As Seth Mitchell rolled to victory over Davis Ruark, we spent more than a moment or so thinking of the late Sam Vincent and Davis Ruark’s outrageous attempt to intimidate him from running for the State’s Attorney office. Ruark’s threatening letter was issued shortly before the tragic accident that took Sam’s life.
While many attribute Ruark’s defeat to his personal involvement, as a defendant, in the criminal justice system, it may be that letter that brought him down. In any event, Davis gets credit for defeating himself.
I wonder if that reality has been recognized by Mr. Ruark or by Mr. Mitchell?

First District Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-MD) is running TV ads. He’s raising money. He’s doing plenty of photo ops and controlled press appearances. One thing he’s still not doing – MEETING WITH CONSTITUENTS IN A TOWN HALL SETTING.
I know it’s tough. Voting for PORKULUS. Saddling constituents with higher long term energy costs thanks to his vote for CAP & TAX. Voting with Nancy Pelosi 85% of time – now that’s INDEPENDENT! We thank your for your vote against ObamaCare. We also know that would have never happened if you hadn’t heard LOUD and CLEAR (at Town Hall meetings, ironically) that your constituents didn’t want it.

Somerset County Sheriff's Office Press Releases
On Monday, September 13, 2010, in cooperation with the Department of Emergency Services for Somerset County, the Somerset County Sheriff's Office was able to purchase 12 Mobile Data Terminal Lap-Top computers and 8 Digital in-car Cameras. Two additional surplus in-car cameras were obtained from the Worcester County Sheriff's Office.
The 12 Mobile Data Terminal Lap-Top computers, and in-car cameras will be installed in all patrol vehicles currently assigned for road patrol.
The Somerset County Sheriff's Office has currently applied for a grant from the Governors Office for Crime Prevention for the procurement of 12 additional Mobile Data Terminal Lap-Top computers.
9-9-10 Anthony Wayne Adkins of Fruitland, arrested on a warrant regarding theft of a motorcycle. Deputies received information from a citizen that Adkins had stole a motor cycle from Fruitland, and was staying at a residence on College Backbone Rd. Deputies verified the information through the Fruitland Police department and responded to that location. Adkins was arrested, and the motorcycle was recovered. Adkins was later turned over to the Fruitland Police department.
9-14-10 Wallace David Moore of Crisfield, arrested on a warrant regarding failing to appear in court. Moore was later held on a $50,000 bond.
9-13-10 Michael Paul Glordano Sr. of Baltimore, arrested regarding a felony theft charge. On 9-13-10 Deputies investigated a theft of oyster equipment in the Frenchtown area. The investigation showed that Glordano had removed the equipment from a shanty, and sold the equipment for scrap. Glordano was later released on a personal recognizance bond.
9-13-10 Rodney William Burke of Crisfield, arrested on a circuit court indictment regarding 2nd degree burglary, and two counts of malicious destruction of property. Burk was later held on a $50,000 bond.
9-13-10 Martino Terron Jackson of Marion station, arrested on a warrant regarding failing to appear in court. Jackson was later held on a $10,000 bond.
9-13-10 Clifton Ricardo Fields of Crisfield, arrested on a warrant regarding failing to appear in court. Fields was later held on a $1,000 bond.
9-13-10 Tyron Jerel McCready Sr. of marion, arrested on a criminal summons regarding two counts of destruction of property over $500.00 and two counts of theft less than $500.00. McCready was later released pending trial.

Democrat Congresswoman Leaves Voicemail For Lobbyist Cash
A couple weeks ago, House Member Eleanor Holmes Norton made a fundraising call to a lobbyist. The lobbyist wasn’t available, so Holmes Norton left a voicemail.
Congressional Democrats are scrambling to assemble the financial resources they hope can stave off their electoral armageddon. Speaker Pelosi and her leadership team are putting a lot of pressure on Democrat members to pony up campaign contributions to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The pressure is especially strong on members from “safe” districts, who need little campaign money of their own to win reelection.
In [a] voicemail recording, Holmes Norton seeks a campaign contribution from the lobbyist and even mentions that she hadn’t previously asked for a donation. Such is the pressure Speaker Pelosi has placed on the members.
At the very beginning of the message, Holmes Norton notes that the lobbyist:
'ha[s] given to other colleagues of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee'
Beyond being a bit heavy-handed, where did she get this information? Such donations are listed in FEC reports, but it is a violation to use that information to solicit campaign donations.
More serious, however, is her frequent mention of her seniority and her Chairmanship of a subcommittee. She is attempting to solicit funds based on her past actions taken in her official capacity in Congress. She is implying to the lobbyist that, should he decline to donate, he will be turning down a senior member of Congress who Chairs a subcommittee highly relevant to his “sector”.
Worse than that, she details her role overseeing a large economic development project in the District, funded by “stimulus” funds. It would appear that either the lobbyist has an interest in this project, or the Congresswoman thinks he does, as she states she is “frankly surprised” the lobbyist hasn’t given to her.
Especially, she notes, because of her
'long and deep work …in fact it has been by major work on the committee and subcommittee it’s been essentially in your sector...'
“In your sector.” This raises additional concerns, and we note potentially relevant laws here:
She who promises, directly or indirectly, any government contract or other government benefit (provided for or made possible by any Act of Congress) as a reward for a political contribution shall be guilty of a misdemeanor (18 U.S.C. § 600).
She who attempts to cause anyone to make a political contribution by denying or threatening to deny any government payment or other government benefit (provided for or made possible, in whole or in part, by any Act of Congress) shall be guilty of a misdemeanor (18 U.S.C. § 601).

Banks Seize Record Number Of Homes In August
'I don't think it gets any better really until the end of 2013,' analyst says
NEW YORK — A record number of homeowners lost houses to their banks in August as lenders worked through the backlog of distressed mortgages, real estate data company RealtyTrac said Thursday.
New default notices decreased at the same time, suggesting that lenders managed the flow of troubled loans and foreclosed properties hitting the market to limit price declines, the company said.

The Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize is awarding $10 million to a trio of ultralight, futuristic-looking cars that can get more than 100 miles per gallon.
WASHINGTON — A four-seat car that gets 102 miles per gallon is the top winner in a $10 million contest designed to encourage the development of ultra-efficient automobiles.
Edison2, a team of racing engineers from Lynchburg, Va., won the $5 million prize in the mainstream-vehicle category of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize. The list of winners was released in advance of Thursday's awards ceremony in Washington.
The winners in two of the three prize categories — Edison2 and Swiss-based X-Tracer — were a foregone conclusion because they were the last surviving entrants. The third winner, Li-ion Motors of Mooresville, N.C., squeaked out a slim victory.
The competition began in the spring with 136 vehicles, entered by 111 teams from around the world.

FedEx 1Q Profit Doubles; Will Cut 1,700 Jobs
NEW YORK — FedEx Corp. indicated Thursday that the global economic recovery isn't as strong as previously thought, and moved to fix the weak spot in its operations: its money-losing truck business.
FedEx did raise its financial outlook after its first-quarter net income doubled. But the projections for the second quarter and full year fell shy of Wall Street expectations, and the stock dropped 2.6 percent in premarket trading.
Growth in international air shipments has been driving FedEx's results lately. That continued in the first quarter. But the FedEx Freight segment lost money again as demand for large items like refrigerators and other appliances continues to be weak.
FedEx will combine its FedEx Freight and FedEx National less-than-truckload operations on Jan. 30, closing 100 facilities and cutting 1,700 workers. FedEx says the move, along with other cost cuts, will ensure the trucking business is profitable next year.

3 Dead After Head-On Crash With Ambulance
A violent crash between an ambulance and an SUV left three people dead in Prince George's County.
Paramedics had just left their station in response to a 911 call at about midnight in District Heights. The ambulance had lights and sirens activated and was traveling west on Marlboro Pike.
Investigators said that's when an SUV crossed the center line and was speeding down the wrong side of the road.

Police: Terrorists Fired Phosphorus Shells Into Israel
Two phosphorous mortars were fired at southern Israel from Gaza on Wednesday, Police Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told The Jerusalem Post.
"A police bomb disposal team examined a number of mortars that were fired... we can confirm that two out of the nine mortars contained phosphorous," Rosenfeld added.
Israel Police said it was not the first time that phosphorous shells had been fired at Israel from Gaza.
Haim Yalin, head of the Eshkol Regional Council where the phosphorous mortars landed, reacted sharply to the news of the phosphorus mortar attacks. "These weapons have been banned by the Geneva convention. They cause burns among victims and they kill. This is an agricultural area, and we now have to explain to farmers how to deal with burns in light of the phosphorus mortars," he told the Post.
Yalin added that firefighters and paramedics operating in his area would now have prepare for further phosphorous shells. "We are preparing to go back to the situation that we faced before Operation Cast Lead, when we faced continuous mortar, rocket and sniper attacks," he said.
