OCEAN CITY — The bright orange barrels that served as the smoking receptacles on the beach from one end of Ocean City to the other last year have been replaced with low-key smaller receptacles mounted to posts in the designated areas, but the diminished presence does not mean Ocean City is any less serious about enforcing the ordinance that went into effect last year.
Last year, the Mayor and Council adopted an ordinance banning smoking on the beach except for designated areas with proper receptacles for disregarding cigarette butts. The designated smoking areas are located on the beach at each street from the Inlet to the Delaware line with a few exceptions and smoking is only allowed within 15 feet of the designated areas.
Last year, the designated smoking areas were marked with bright orange barrels, essentially 22-gallon receptacles located along the beach and 15 feet off the Boardwalk, where smoking is also prohibited. The orange cigarette butt receptacles shared space on the beach with the countless iconic blue trash barrels, which encouraged beachgoers to pick up after themselves, but also contributed to the clutter on the otherwise pristine strand.
This year, on the eve of another Memorial Day weekend, the bright orange barrels have been replaced with smaller receptacles mounted on posts in the same areas as the original orange barrels.

Let me guess... You smoke those nasty a** cigarettes! The same ones killing me and my children because of your second hand smoke.
If I was still a smoker, and I still liked to enjoy the beach, I would find another beach to go to...maybe somewhere down south in tobacco country. I definitely wouldn't let Ocean City take my money and treat me like a pariah. Ocean City has made their statement by their actions. They do not want any smokers, or their money, in their town.
Other than keeping my property taxes the lowest in the state, I have no use for Ocean City and its imported urban tourists. Its like taking a vacation in downtown Baltimore. I don't like them when they're in Baltimore, and I don't like them when they come here. Hey, but bring the money and keep my taxes low. You can have O.C.
It's nice to be able to go to a beach and not see cigarette butts and filters on and in the sand. It's also nice to not have to smell the funk of cigarette smoke.
I used to be a sometimes smoker. Now I see it as a totally bad thing.
1126 so your claiming second hand smoke out in the open? Another useful uniformed moron idiot. Read the study it was done in an 18"×18" box and when ventilation was introduced no harmless second hand smoke. So i warned of this instrusion to freedoms. No health issue in outdoor areas. They only needed to enforce littering laws. No bans needed. So keep cheering fool. Your smelly offenesive facist stink is the next ban. Md and del beaches no longer get any of my money. And i quit smokin. It about freedoms and facist dictates from ignoranant control freaks.
Once again, the local government is trying to legislate behavior rather than letting people make their own choices. While I am not an advocate of smoking, I would never deprive another from partaking in a smoke outdoors. If they are going to pursue this path than perhaps they should be aware that planes emit over a billion cigarettes' worth of pollutants; so what's next? Are they going to ban air travel?
Cigarette smokers are entitled in their own minds. They do not care who or where they throw their garbage out. On the street , in the water ways.
I wish the police would issue a citation for the smokers who throw their butts anywhere and everywhere. They stink and produce garbage.
ENFORCE THE LITTER LAWS
"imported urban tourists." Very nice and allow me to borrow it.
Smoking does kill..okay we all know it. Smoking imposes, okay we all know it.
But when the very healthy "imported urban tourists" show up in itzy bitzy two piece bikini's OR male speedo's - who's going to enforce that visible farce?
Its gonna be a grrrrrrrrrrrrreat Summer of 2016!!!!!
1:34: Look up how "litter" is defined in the annotated code of Maryland, before you try to redefine the term. A single cigarette butt is not litter, or garbage, by definition. Get off your high horse. I wish police could issue citations for people that don't know what they are talking about.
11:37 - if you smoke, you are a pariah.
2:21 - you should be issued a citation for being a moron.

Even if it isn't defined as litter (it is...), throwing cig butts is just trashy and disrespectful. Didn't you mother ever teach you to clean up after yourself?

You are obviously the low or uninformed because if you were intelligent you would know that studies are done to sway people into believing something because the study was bought and paid for you dumb moron. Just like these biased studies from the ignorant CAFO Chicken House Haters.

I agree wholeheartedly.
I just wish Ocean City would ban cigarettes all together and no smoking on the beach. Anyone caught should be arrested.

So you think it's ok to flick your carcinogen infested cigarette butts anywhere you please? You are definitely an ignorant moron.

He is a trashy person
At 1:34 & 2:42 - Why you're at it let's ban alcohol too because I'm tired of seeing beer cans and bottles thrown in ditches on the backroads and how about banning all food places because some people throw their fast food garbage on the ground. I'm so tired of these cupcakes in America trying to tell others what they can and can't do. If I want to have a smoke, I'll have one. I don't like seeing when smokers throw their butts on the ground either and I always put my butts in the cellophane when I'm outside and I put them in the ashtray when I'm driving down the road. The litter laws should be enforced but don't try telling another person what they can or can't do.
Right on 2:38.
Cigarette butts ARE defined as litter in Maryland code.

"I just wish Ocean City would ban cigarettes all together and no smoking on the beach. Anyone caught should be arrested." Really? They should be arrested? How many times did you vote for Obama?
If I want to smoke I'm going to smoke. I'll take my chances on the citation and field strip my butt.
11:54 AM - I'm good with that. If smokers took the remaining filters to a trash can, it would be better for all of us.
Cigarette butts are considered litter by Maryland code. Flicking one out your car window can get you a $100 fine.
