More than half of the cigarettes consumed in New York, 56.9 percent, are now smuggled into the state, according to a report from the Tax Foundation.
And it's no wonder: The cigarette tax in New York is $4.35 a pack, the highest in the nation. And New York City imposes an additional $1.50 tax, bringing the total taxes to $5.85 a pack — nearly 35 times higher than in the lowest-taxed state.
The cigarette tax in New York has risen 190 percent since 2006, and the smuggling rate has surged 59 percent.

These libtared states always shoot themselves in the foot with too high of a tax...they are really bad at math...cant add or govern effectivly...
People will only take so much from the gov't before they just figure a way around the gov't bull.
Virginia is making more tax money off of buyers from surrounding states than it would even if it matched some of the highest taxes in the US. Pretty smart.
But along with that, it makes criminals - with FEDERAL CHARGES - out of regular citizens, and especially fixed-income Americans, that are just trying to make ends meet that have (sadly) a very bad habit.
It something like enacting a flat tax: I would venture to guess that a vast majority of Americans "cheat" in one way or another to find a way to lower their tax liability. They too are criminals in the eyes of our government.
Enact the flat tax - everybody becomes law-abiding, and the government would make a TON more money.
We can't have this loss of revenue. We need to raise all cigarette taxes to New York's level ASAP!
Inflated taxes chase away good business, and invites crime. DUH!
