NY Dems block bill expanding college tuition for Gold Star families after approving $27M in tuition aid for illegal immigrants: report

New York Assembly Democrats on Tuesday blocked a bill that proposed expanding college tuition aid for children of deceased and disabled military veterans after-- having a week earlier-- approved a state budget that set aside $27 million in college tuition aid for illegal immigrants.

The Assembly’s Higher Education Committee voted 15 to 11 on Tuesday to shelve the bill, effectively quashing its chances of going to the floor, the Post-Standard reported.

The decision came after committee chair Deborah Glick, D-Manhattan, and Speaker Carl Heastie said $27 million from the state’s budget would go towards supporting the Jose Peralta New York State DREAM Act, which allows illegal immigrants to qualify for state aid for higher education, Newsweek reported.

The Intellectual Dishonesty of the Campaign Against the Electoral College

A full-blown war is raging against the Electoral College.

But as activist groups become more desperate to overturn our way of electing presidents before voters go the polls in November 2020, their arguments become more absurd and hyperbolic.

CNN recently ran a preposterous segment suggesting that James Madison called the Electoral College “evil,” a shameful distortion and an absurdity given that the man known as the Father of the Constitution had a direct hand in creating the institution.

Others have made more serious but ultimately absurd indictments of the Electoral College.

Frustration boils at US-Mexico border

Wait times at the ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border have soared as the Trump administration diverts officers to handle an influx of immigrants, leaving trucks backed up for hours and industry leaders warning of possible produce shortages and supply-chain interruptions.

The clogged checkpoints are frustrating bankers, business leaders, local residents and even Mexico's foreign minister, who called the reassignment of hundreds of border officers to other parts of the nearly 2,000-mile boundary a "very bad idea." The shift in enforcement efforts is overwhelming legal checkpoints and impeding the free flow of goods and services, in some cases increasing wait times nearly fivefold.

Border Patrol officials have repeatedly warned that immigration holding cells are jammed beyond capacity, with 10,000 to 13,000 in custody, creating dangerous and unsanitary conditions for migrants and officers. Authorities have said they are overwhelmed at the border and need more detention beds, officers and judicial support to process the rush of migrants.

The slowdowns at the border have come as the Department of Homeland Security has faced political upheaval amid a record surge of migrants that included apprehensions topping 100,000 last month.

‘VACANT LAND MYTH’: HUNDREDS OF US LOCALITIES ARE RESISTING THE SPREAD OF GREEN ENERGY

From New York to California, localities have taken action to stymie solar and wind energy projects to preserve their way of life, according to Manhattan Institute senior fellow Robert Bryce.

“All-renewable scenarios rely on the vacant-land myth, the faulty notion that there’s endless amounts of unused, uncared-for land out there in flyover country that’s ready and waiting to be covered with forests of renewable-energy stuff,” Bryce told Senate lawmakers in a hearing Thursday.

“The truth is quite different,” Bryce said in prepared testimony for the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

“Rural communities, even entire states, are resisting or rejecting wind, solar, and high-voltage transmission projects and that opposition is already slowing deployment of new renewable capacity in the U.S., Canada, and Europe,” Bryce said.

Biden, who once accused Jeb Bush of denying blacks the vote, tells him: ‘You were a hell of a governor’

Former Vice President Joe Biden complimented 2016 Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush on Thursday despite campaigning against him 17 years ago and accusing him of suppressing minority votes.

"You were a hell of a governor," Biden, a 2020 Democratic hopeful, said to the former Florida governor, who was first elected in 1998 and reelected four years later.

Bush, 66, and Biden, 76, who has been teasing a 2020 presidential run for months, appeared at a University of Pennsylvania forum to discuss the opioid epidemic. Biden's praise for Republicans has already got him in trouble once this spring. He felt he had to apologize for describing Vice President Mike Pence as "a decent guy."

Sharpton, Reparations, and the Democrats

Candidates for the 2020 Democratic presidential primary election appeared at the National Action Network (NAN) annual conference. There they all bowed down at the altar of white guilt. One after another the mostly white candidates kissed the ring of the founder and leader of NAN, and the new pope of the Democratic Party primaries, the Reverend Al Sharpton. As Sharpton watched over his flock, each presidential aspirant professed support for a policy that fits squarely within Sharpton’s lifelong modus operandi -- using America’s original sin of slavery to shake dollars out of Americans suffering from white guilt.

Many know the reverend as the well-coiffed and bespoke talking head on the liberal MSNBC news talk show, "Politics Nation." However, before his made-for-TV makeover, Sharpton was a notorious race hustler and anti-Semite who played a central role in one of the biggest race hoaxes in modern times. He championed the 15-year-old black girl Tawana Brawley, who falsely accused six white men of rape, and actually got a judgment for defamation entered against him. He stoked anti-Semitic riots in Crown Heights, which led to the killing of a Jewish scholar, and in Harlem, which led to the shooting of four employees of the Jewish-owned Freddy’s Fashion Mart before it was set on fire, burning to death seven more.

Moving from the streets to the boardroom, Sharpton formed NAN with its motto of “No Justice. No Peace.” Through NAN, he perfected the art of the shakedown -- no peace unless NAN received “just” compensation. Sharpton would accuse major American corporations of racism and use the threat of boycotts to coerce companies into making financial contributions to NAN or to himself personally. Sharpton is using similar tactics in the world of politics. He supports a bill sponsored by Representative Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX), titled the “Commission to Study and Develop Reparations Proposals for African Americans Act.” The bill calls for “apology and compensation to begin the long-delayed process of atonement for slavery.”

Kevin McCarthy blasts House Dem majority’s first 100 days: ‘Resolutions, radicalism, and resistance’

During a debate on a net neutrality bill, House Minority Leader took to the House floor to call out his Democratic counterparts for squandering their first 100 days in the majority on anti-Trump resistance and nonbinding resolutions.

“The question more and more Americans are beginning to ask,” McCarthy said from the floor. “What have the Democrats done with their majority?”

McCarthy pointed out that this coming Friday, when House Democrats are at their annual policy conference, will mark 100 days since the party took control of the lower chamber. Yet he said that he couldn’t point to any major accomplishments during that politically critical period, which he called “100 days of Democrat disappointment.”

“At this point in the last Congress, Republicans had passed 141 bills out of committee and 132 out of the House,” McCarthy said. “So what do the numbers say now? By contrast, Democrats have passed 68 bills out of committee and 97 out of the House. Considerably fewer bills out of this House than before.”

Reggie Bush: Absentee Fathers Leads to Violence in Black Community

Former NFL running back Reggie Bush feels a big reason for the problem of violence in black neighborhoods, is a dearth of fathers.

According to the Institute for Family Studies, about 70% of black children were born out of wedlock in 2018.

In the aftermath of the murder of rapper Nipsey Hussle in Los Angeles earlier this month, FS1 had a panel discussion on the debate show Speak For Yourself, on how to reduce violence in the black community. The panel consisted of Bush, former NFL receiver Greg Jennings, ex-NBA star Stephen Jackson, and host Jason Whitlock, all African-American.

“So to me, we’ve got to get back to the foundation at home with the parenting,” said Bush, a former USC star. “A lot of boys who I grew up with didn’t have their dads. A lot of guys I knew in the NFL didn’t have their dads growing up. So for me, I learned from a lot of the men through football. Football became that father for me because that is where other men there. The issue with that is I’m learning from other men who are just as broken as me.”

Whitlock agreed with Bush.

“If you don’t restore the family, it’s hard to correct anything, it’s hard to produce anything positive,” Whitlock said.

Bush said what drove him to be a great football player was resentment toward his absent father.

Amazon Workers Are Listening to What You Tell Alexa

Tens of millions of people use smart speakers and their voice software to play games, find music or trawl for trivia. Millions more are reluctant to invite the devices and their powerful microphones into their homes out of concern that someone might be listening.

Sometimes, someone is.

Amazon.com Inc. employs thousands of people around the world to help improve the Alexa digital assistant powering its line of Echo speakers. The team listens to voice recordings captured in Echo owners’ homes and offices. The recordings are transcribed, annotated and then fed back into the software as part of an effort to eliminate gaps in Alexa’s understanding of human speech and help it better respond to commands.

The Alexa voice review process, described by seven people who have worked on the program, highlights the often-overlooked human role in training software algorithms. In marketing materials Amazon says Alexa “lives in the cloud and is always getting smarter.” But like many software tools built to learn from experience, humans are doing some of the teaching.

Why Socialism Fails Wherever It’s Tried

“The economy of Venezuela has collapsed as a result of gross socialist mismanagement. Their currency is essentially worthless. To start over, the next government of Venezuela must re-establish the rule of law, protect private property rights, and create a new currency.”

So writes Richard Rahn, one of America’s most brilliant economists. With socialism now stunningly in fashion in the United States, we need to be better teachers about its dangers.

For example, Rahn has a great way in a classroom setting to convey to students the problem with socialism. He asks how many favor free college or medical care. Almost everyone’s hand goes up.

Same People Behind Iraq War Lies Pushed Russian Collusion

Exploiting fear and confusion after a shocking event, they warned that our country was in imminent danger at the hands of a mad man. They insisted that legitimate intelligence, including a CIA report issued a month before a national election and a dossier produced by reliable sources in the United Kingdom, proved the threat was real. The subject monopolized discussions on Capitol Hill, in the White House, and in the press.

They argued that the situation was so dire that it was straining our relationship with strategic allies. Any evidence to the contrary was readily dismissed. And anyone who questioned their agenda was ridiculed as a coward, a dupe, or a conspiracy theorist. The news media dedicated endless air time and column inches to anyone who wanted to repeat the falsehood.

But an investigative report released two years after the propaganda campaign began found no evidence to support their central claim. The CIA report was highly flawed. The official dossier, some concluded, was deceptive and “sexed-up.”

Chinese scientists put human gene into monkeys

For the first time, a team of Chinese scientists made use of gene-editing techniques to make monkey brains more human-like. By the end, the monkeys, rhesus macaques, got smarter and had superior memories as compared to the unaltered monkeys.

Researchers edited the human version of a gene known as ‘MCPH1’ into the macaques. The gene made the monkeys’ brain develop along a more human-like timeline. The gene-hacked monkeys showed better reaction times and improved short-term memories in comparison to their unaltered peers, as per China Daily.

However, some scientists also raised concerns regarding the technique, some even calling it ‘reckless’.

Relaxing Pet Restrictions Could Have Tourism Impact

OCEAN CITY — Hoping to tap into a growing market, resort tourism officials this week discussed expanding when pets are allowed on the beach and Boardwalk.

Currently, pets are only allowed on the beach and Boardwalk between Oct. 1 and April 30. However, a popular growing trend is for vacationers to bring their favorite four-legged friends with them on vacation.

During a Tourism Commission meeting on Monday, Ocean City Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association (OCHMRA) Executive Director Susan Jones pointed out more resort lodging establishments are becoming pet-friendly in response to the growing trend.

“Seeing how we have so many new hotel rooms, we need to explore how we’re going to fill them,” she said. “Pet travel is becoming increasingly popular. We used to have four members allowing pets and now we have 20. It’s definitely a growing market.”

White House considered releasing detained migrants in sanctuary cities: Washington Post

White House officials have tried to pressure U.S. immigration authorities to release migrants detained at the border into so-called sanctuary cities such as San Francisco to retaliate against President Donald Trump’s political adversaries, the Washington Post reported on Thursday.

The Post, which reviewed emails on the issue and spoke to unnamed officials at the Department of Homeland Security, said the White House proposed the measure at least twice in the past six months. Sanctuary cities are those where local officials decline to hand over illegal immigrants for deportation.

The White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the report. A DHS spokesman told Reuters in a statement the plan was “a suggestion that was floated and rejected, which ended any further discussion.” The Post quoted a White House official as saying the same thing.

Winners and Losers of the 2019 General Assembly Session

It’s already been said a thousand times, but it bears repeating: This has been a General Assembly session like no other.

It began on a somber and shocking note – Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr.’s disclosure that he was undergoing chemotherapy for Stage 4 Prostate Cancer. It ended on an even more somber and shocking note – the death of House Speaker Michael E. Busch (D-Anne Arundel) on Sunday, the day before Sine Die.

How to square the need for the sobriety and perspective these trying moments require with the snark that usually accompanies our annual roundup of session winners and losers?

The truth is, we thought about scotching the feature. But we’ve decided to press on because, well, that’s what we do. We’re here to shed some light on the session and the players who mattered most. And we could all stand a little levity about now.

Kris Kobach’s Legal Expertise Offers Trump Homeland Security Solution

President Trump is decrying federal judges who have routinely blocked his immigration reform agenda, as former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach is considered for the top position at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) precisely for his longtime legal expertise.

During conversations with the media on Tuesday, Trump slammed a recent decision by U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg in San Francisco, California that blocks the administration’s implementation of the “Remain in Mexico” policy whereby border crossers and illegal aliens seeking asylum in the country are returned to Mexico until their court hearings.

“We have a judge that just ruled, incredibly, that he doesn’t want people staying in Mexico,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “Figure that one out. Nobody can believe these decisions we’re getting from the 9th Circuit. It’s a disgrace.”

Those frustrations with pro-migration attorneys and activist judges, insiders tell Breitbart News, are precisely the reason Kobach is uniquely fit to lead DHS considering his background of legal expertise on immigration dating back to the early days of President George W. Bush’s administration.

Legislature Passes Electric School Bus Mandate

A bill that passed in the final hours of the state legislature requiring all new Maryland school buses be “zero-emission” vehicles would have cost the Montgomery school system an estimated $84 million, but a last-minute addition of a grant program will offset the expected price tag.

House Bill 1125, sponsored by District 15 delegate David Fraser-Hidalgo, mandates all new school buses in Maryland purchased after October be “zero-emission vehicles,” defined as a bus that does not produce any tailpipe or evaporative emissions, as most traditional school buses do.

The county school system’s Chief Operating Officer Andrew Zuckerman said he was surprised the bill passed and said it would have been a significant financial burden without funding from the state.

“We’re not really sure about the availability of the buses at this scale, or the legitimate, pragmatic feasibility,” Zuckerman said during Tuesday’s school board meeting. “This is surprising. I’m surprised this was approved without further study on the part of the state.”

From 'no crisis' to 'breaking point': Mainstream media changes its tune on border crisis

Months after repeatedly dismissing and mocking President Trump’s claim of a national emergency at the Southern U.S. border, the mainstream media is grappling with reality, with no less than The New York Times declaring the border crisis at “breaking point.”

Yet as recently as February, a New York Times fact-checker of Trump's State of the Union speech tweeted: “President Trump described illegal border crossings as a 'urgent national crisis.' This is false."

The Washington Post’s editorial board said “there is no crisis” at the border and called Trump’s national emergency declaration “untethered from truth and reality” and a “make-believe emergency.”

"Mr. Trump’s technique is to spin fiction as fact, secure in the knowledge that minds will reel as fact-checkers labor to deconstruct his ziggurat of falsehoods. So let’s stick to one big, basic truth: There is no crisis at the southern border," the editorial said.

Fast forward, the same media outlets are now scrambling to accurately portray the border crisis, no longer fearing to quote top officials and their data, and declare that the southern border is at a “breaking point” amid a surge in the number of illegal immigrant crossings.

“The country is now unable to provide either the necessary humanitarian relief for desperate migrants or even basic controls on the number and nature of who is entering the United States.”
— The New York Times

OC Council Open To Increase In Building Fees, Permits

OCEAN CITY — The ongoing redevelopment renaissance in the resort is straining resources to the point an adjustment in building fees and permits could be in the offing, resort officials learned this week.

During a budget work session on Monday, Planning and Community Development Director Bill Neville told the Mayor and Council a robust development climate in the resort, fueled largely by a new hotel boom, was achieving the desired results in terms of expanding the tax base, but was coming at the cost of increased expenses in processing building permit applications and other services provided by his department.

Neville said his department’s revenue projections for the current year were down slightly, while expenditures related to issuing building permits and completing the requisite inspections had gone up. He said the difference between revenue and expenditures was around $552,000.

YouTube Hides PragerU Video of Candace Owens’ Testimony in ‘Restricted Mode’

PragerU announced on Wednesday that YouTube has placed another of its videos in “restricted mode,” meaning that not everyone who visits the video-sharing website will be able to watch it. The restricted video is of Candace Owens’ powerful testimony before the House Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday.

YouTube has placed yet another PragerU video in “restricted mode,” according to the organization.

This time, the restricted video is of Candace Owens’ testimony before the House Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday, which had created several viral moments, one of which has also recently become the most watched C-SPAN video of a House hearing on Twitter.

When YouTube puts a video in “restricted mode,” it means that the video is censored from all users that have enabled the website’s restricted mode feature, which typically include libraries, schools, public institutions, or in any setting where viewers may belong to a younger demographic.

The restricted mode feature is used in order to block videos that have been deemed inappropriate, such as pornography or violence.

'How about paying your taxes?'

Amazon and Walmart are in war over worker pay — and now corporate taxes.

After Amazon Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos on Thursday issued a challenge to other retailers, not naming which ones specifically, to match Amazon’s pay and benefits, Walmart snapped right back.

“Today I challenge our top retail competitors (you know who you are!) to match our employee benefits and our $15 minimum wage. Do it! Better yet, go to $16 and throw the gauntlet back at us. It’s a kind of competition that will benefit everyone,” Bezos wrote in his annual letter to shareholders.

“Hey retail competitors out there (you know who you are) how about paying your taxes?” tweeted Walmart’s Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs Dan Bartlett on Thursday morning, sharing an article about Amazon paying $0 in federal taxes on more than $11 billion in profits last year.

AOC faces backlash for telling war vet Crenshaw he should 'go do something' about domestic terror

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., faced mounting criticism Thursday for feuding with freshman colleague Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, over his response to domestic terrorism.

The dustup began after Crenshaw reacted to comments made by Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who had been criticized for characterizing the 9/11 terrorist attacks as “some people did something.”

“First Member of Congress to ever describe terrorists who killed thousands of Americans on 9/11 as ‘some people who did something.’ Unbelievable,” Crenshaw tweeted.

“The state of Maryland joined much of the country in agreeing to offer a Seal of Biliteracy as an endorsement at the end of a high school career to students who can demonstrate they are proficient in English and another language at, at least an intermediate or high level,” she said. “So districts can elect to offer the Seal of Biliteracy.”
