Flu increases heart attack risk six-fold in the first week

People struck down by flu are six times more likely to suffer a heart attack within a week of their diagnosis, a new study warns.

Researchers say their findings reinforce the need for people deemed at high risk of suffering a heart attack to get a flu shot.

The team at Public Health Ontario in Canada discovered a 'significant association' between acute respiratory infections, particularly influenza, and acute myocardial infarction, the medical name for a heart attack.

The researchers also found an elevated risk of heart attack from other respiratory viruses, but none as high as flu.

Experts warn the findings, published today in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggest the risk may be higher for older adults, patients with influenza B infections, and patients experiencing their first heart attack.

Florida to seek death penalty in Tampa serial killings

TAMPA, Fla. — Prosecutors will seek the death penalty against a 24-year-old man suspected of randomly killing four people and terrorizing a Florida neighborhood for several months.

Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren announced the decision during a Tuesday morning news conference in Tampa. Howell Emanuel Donaldson III is charged with four counts of first-degree murder.

He was arrested Nov. 28 after handing a bag containing a handgun to a co-worker at a McDonald’s restaurant near the Seminole Heights neighborhood where the victims were apparently randomly picked off as they walked. Prosecutors have said the ballistics tests show the weapon was used in the shootings.

“A prosecutor’s pursuit of justice should be tempered by mercy, but some crimes are so unconscionable, so hard to fathom that we must leave mercy to a higher power and instead focus on achieving justice for the victims and their families,” Warren said.

Navy veteran puts up fight against carjacker at Texas gas station in brawl caught on video

A Vietnam War veteran proved Monday he had a lot of fight left in him, refusing to back down when a man stole his wallet and truck from a Texas gas station.

The Richland Hills Police Department said in a news release the incident happened around 6:30 a.m. when Allan Huddleston stopped at a Shell Gas Station along a freeway about 7 miles from downtown Fort Worth. A man first approached Huddleston asking for a cigarette, then pushed past him and got into the driver's seat of his truck.

"He's in my truck trying to drive off,” Huddleston told FOX4 News. “So I reach in there, and I grab him around his neck in a head hold, I guess you'd call it. I drag him out of the truck."

The two then fell to the ground in a brawl captured on surveillance video. The suspect was eventually able to steal Huddleston's wallet and keys during the struggle, and then got into the vehicle to attempt to drive away.

Carney offers plan for English language learners

State aims to increase graduation rates, teacher support

Gov. John Carney recently visited North Georgetown Elementary and unveiled a strategic plan to address the educational needs of Delaware’s increasing population of students who do not speak English as a first language.

“Our challenge is to come up with a state plan to meet these students where they are and take it forward to increase literacy and graduation rates,” he said.

The plan, which he said will be accomplished through a mixture of school district funding, referendums and state funds, if available, is intended to provide more support for English Language Learners and recognize their unique educational needs as a priority.

In the last 20 years, the number of students who do not speak English when they start school has increased by 433 percent, said Carney.

Louis DeBroux: Dems Look Foolish as Tax Reform Brings Prosperity

Following the passage of the GOP tax cuts, American corporations are increases wages and capital investment.

If the recent GOP tax cuts are truly “Armageddon,” as Nancy Pelosi and her socialist Democrat cohorts claim, then America’s response increasingly looks like an R.E.M. song title: “It’s The End of the World As We Know It, and I Feel Fine.”

Chicken Little Democrats claimed tax cuts — specifically cutting the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21% — would be a disaster for the American worker, but reality begs to differ. Following the passage of the GOP tax cuts, more than 200 American corporations have given or announced wage increases and bonuses of between $1,000 and $2,500 for their workers.

Walmart — the epitome of capitalistic evil to American progressives — announced it is investing a portion of its tax savings into a wage increase for employees, raising its corporate minimum wage to $11/hour, more than 52% higher than the federal minimum wage. Dozens of other corporations have announced they are expanding and creating new jobs due to the tax cuts.

How a Cannabis Ban Turned One California County Into 'Ground Zero for Chaos'

On Jan. 10, supervisors in this historic county—where Gold Rush mining camps flourished in 1850—voted to kill off the Green Rush that exploded here in 2016. By a 3–2 tally, the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors declared all commercial cannabis farms illegal. The county planning department estimated that as many as 1,600 commercial cannabis growers were operating in the region in mid-2017. Many of them were licensed by the county. Now, the move to ban cannabis businesses means every one of those growers must cease operations by May 1. Millions of dollars in tax money will vanish from the economically beleaguered county of 45,000 residents.

In the vote’s aftermath, protests have stirred amid fears over devastating cuts to the county workforce. Lawsuits appear certain.

“It is just ground zero for chaos,” says Paul Smith, vice president of governmental affairs for the Rural County Representatives of California, an organization focusing on the Golden State’s sparsely populated inland and northern coastal counties.

Florida girl beats up classmate in Snapchat live stream

A 14-year-old girl in Florida brutally beat up a 13-year-old who was a new student at her school on Sunday.

Eight classmates watched the assault without interfering and some recorded it. Detectives found the footage on Snapchat.

The 14-year-old seen throwing punches in the video attacked her new classmate because she believed the girl was spreading rumors about her on a social media platform that allows users to leave comments anonymously, WPTV West Palm Beach reported.

However, law enforcement officials believe that the girl she beat up was not the person who had made the comments.

Trump's 2018 Farm Bill: 'Work Is Pathway to Self-Sufficiency' for Food Stamp Recipients

The Trump administration unveiled its 2018 Farm Bill Wednesday, proposing pathways for food stamp recipients to get back to work.

The four-page document released Wednesday emphasized the need for “work” to be “the pathway to self-sufficiency” for many food stamp users.

The recently released U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) initiative’s goal is to get more able-bodied adults into jobs or enrolled in job-training programs in the hopes that they can be less dependent on government assistance.

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue told a group of reporters at a farm near Mifflintown, Pennsylvania, that the administration is looking to implement “work requirements” at the federal level to discourage government dependence and promote “an independent lifestyle.”

Andrew Napolitano: Wrong To Keep Mass Surveillance Memo Secret

What is the deal with a memorandum by Republican employees at the Intelligence Committee of the United States House of Representatives that allegedly demonstrates very disturbing use of surveillance power through the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court not being publicized or shared widely among Congress members until shortly after legislation (S 139) to extend legal authority for such surveillance for six years cleared the Congress?

If the memorandum provides as disturbing of revelations as some Congress members are claiming, every House and Senate member, and the American people too, being able to review it before congressional votes on the bill could have had significant consequences.

Maybe the memorandum’s wide distribution would have resulted in the bill failing to pass, passing with alterations to address problems evidenced in the memorandum, or passing with a significantly shorter reauthorization period. That a small group of Congress members “sat on” the memorandum, keeping its information from their fellow Congress members, legal scholar Andrew Napolitano says in a new interview with host Kennedy at Fox Business, “is either incompetence or malfeasance in office.”

And why is the memorandum now kept secret from the public despite Congress members’ claims that its revelations show reprehensible actions in the US government related to the mass surveillance program? Napolitano, who is the Fox News senior judicial analyst as well as a Ron Paul Institute Advisory Board member, finds this lack of openness intolerable.

Continuing to keep the memorandum secret from the people, Napolitano argues in the interview, is wrong.

New Texts Show Lisa Page Believed Loretta Lynch Knew Hillary Clinton Would Face No Charges

Lisa Page, the disgraced FBI attorney, apparently believed, in July 2016, that then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch knew “no charges will be brought” against Hillary Clinton.

“And yeah, it’s real profile in couragw [sic] since she knows no charges will be brought,” Page texted her extra-marital lover, demoted FBI Agent Peter Strzok, on July 1, 2016.

The full exchange between the two suggests they knew and, in turn, believed Loretta Lynch knew, that no charges would be brought against Hillary Clinton, even before the FBI had interviewed her over her unauthorized private email server. The exchange came when they learned Lynch would make a statement that she would accept whatever the FBI’s recommendation was regarding the email investigation after she was caught by a TV crew meeting with former President Bill Clinton aboard a plane at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport.

Investigation Continues After Two Troopers Shot And Suspect Fatally Wounded In Allegany County Barricade

(Little Orleans, MD) – Police continue to investigate an overnight barricade in Allegany County that injured two troopers and fatally wounded the suspect after a seven hour standoff with police.

After firing multiple rounds at police and injuring two state troopers, William Charles Mackenzie, 66, of Little Orleans, was fatally wounded by police during an overnight barricade in Allegany County. EMS provided medical treatment to Mackenzie on the scene. He was transported to the WMHS, Western Maryland Health System, in Cumberland, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The two troopers who were shot during the incident are not being identified at this time. They are members of the Special Tactical Assault Team Element, or STATE team. They were flown by Maryland State Police medevac to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where they were treated for their injuries and later released.

Both troopers were struck by gunfire originating from inside the home. Investigators believe Mackenzie was alone in the house and in his bedroom when he fired several rounds through a window toward police on the perimeter. Police believe Mackenzie had multiple firearms in the home.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m. last night, Maryland State Police at the Cumberland Barrack received a9-1-1 call from Mackenzie’s wife. The wife informed police that she and her husband had been in an argument when he threatened her with a gun at their home on the 11,000 block of High Germany Road.

She said a struggle ensued between the two of them and they fell to the ground. As they fell, the gun reportedly fired at least one round. The wife was able to escape the residence and run to a neighboring house approximately 200 yards away to call for help.

The Incredible Shrinking Illinois: High Taxes And Low Economic Freedom Have Led To State Crisis

Illinois’s people problem is nothing to shrug off, because it indicates the state economy is on pace to continue its decline. And if nothing changes, people will just keep leaving.

So what’s wrong with Illinois?

Terrible economic policies.

Illinois ranks near the bottom in terms of economic freedom compared with the rest of the country, according to the Fraser Institute’s recent Economic Freedom of North America, or EFNA, report, released in partnership with the Illinois Policy Institute. This report ranks states based on an index of 10 variables related to government spending, taxes and labor market freedom. Only 12 states were ranked lower. Unsurprisingly, blue states California and New York ranked at the bottom of the economic freedom list.

Pennsylvania, which just overtook Illinois as the fifth-largest state in the U.S., ranks 18th on the index of economic freedom, compared with Illinois’ 35th place ranking.

While Illinois continues to shrink, states that rank near the top of the Fraser Institute’s economic freedom rankings are growing. Since the last recession ended in 2009, population in the 10 most-free states has grown 2.5 times faster than it has in the 10 least-free states. Employment and income have also grown faster in the freer states.

"Too Big To Believe" - Massive Scandal Is Brewing At The FBI

As the Potemkin Village walls of The Left's 'Trump Collusion' narrative crash and burn along with special counsel Mueller's credibility, The New York Post's Michael Goodwin sees far more wide-ranging problems ahead for America's 'intelligence' agencies as the anti-Trump 'secret society' and lovers-texts-gate debacles threaten the core of the Deep State.

Goodwin writes that, during the financial crisis, the federal government bailed out banks it declared “too big to fail.” Fearing their bankruptcy might trigger economic Armageddon, the feds propped them up with taxpayer cash.

Something similar is happening now at the FBI, with the Washington wagons circling the agency to protect it from charges of corruption. This time, the appropriate tag line is “too big to believe.”

Yet each day brings credible reports suggesting there is a massive scandal involving the top ranks of America’s premier law enforcement agency. The reports, which feature talk among agents of a “secret society” and suddenly missing text messages, point to the existence both of a cabal dedicated to defeating Donald Trump in 2016 and of a plan to let Hillary Clinton skate free in the classified email probe.

Court Rules IRS Violated Constitution in True the Vote Lawsuit

HOUSTON, TX - January 24, 2018 - True the Vote’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service has resulted in a consent decree outlining egregious conduct by the agency. In the decree, United States District Judge Reggie Walton declared “discrimination on the basis of political viewpoint in administering the United States tax code violates fundamental First Amendment Rights.”

“Our consent decree is a stringent admonishment of the IRS’s admitted discrimination,” said True the Vote founder Catherine Engelbrecht, “but much more is needed to ensure that IRS employees engaging in unconstitutional conduct will face real, actionable penalties. We are working together with Senator John Cornyn, who will introduce legislation to ensure the rights of Americans are protected from rogue government employees whose discrimination and abuse has now been well documented in our court case.

I applaud the tireless efforts of our lawyers, in particular, James Bopp, who led the charge in this groundbreaking effort.”

While FBI Investigation Distracts, Bundy Ranch Case Quietly Dismissed

The FBI Trump investigation is perfect fodder for the mainstream media. It fits the right versus left paradigm like a glove.

It gives each side everything they desire. An enemy to hate. Someone to blame. And a good show.

For the right, the text messages between agents on the investigation team prove that there was an anti-Trump bias. They feel vindicated in their choice of Trump. If he wasn’t trying to drain the swamp, then why is the swamp trying so hard to drag him down?

The corruption involved in the investigation proves what they believe, that it is all rigged. It shows that the political machine is attacking an outsider. And it shows Trump is the perfect one to take them on.

But the left sees it differently. They think Trump is desperately trying to distract from Mueller closing in on high ranking Trump officials. They see these stories about FBI corruption as proof that Trump is guilty. Why else would he be so keen on destroying the FBI’s credibility?

They think the text messages and the intelligence memo that supposedly points to more corruption, are just slight of hand to obscure the actual guilt of Trump and associates.

But what will really happen in the end? Probably nothing. There won’t be some major revelation that brings down the FBI. There won’t be some major charge against Trump.

The right will get little crumbs that certain FBI officials broke protocol. The left will get little crumbs that some of the Trump team did unsavory things. And the machine will go on as normal.

The left and the right will both feel robbed by the corruption of the other side. Their anger and resentment will increase. This will inevitably fuel the us versus them meme.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch…

Bob Mueller’s elephant and the media blind men

If you want to make sense of the endless flood of media reports about Special Counsel Bob Mueller’s investigation, it helps to recall the ancient parable of the blind men asked to describe an elephant.

One reaches out to the unknown creature, feels the trunk and says, “It’s like a snake.” The next touches an ear: “It’s like a fan.” A third grabs a leg: “It’s like a tree.” And so on through the critter’s side (“a wall”), tail (“a rope”) and tusk (“a spear”).

For months, reporters have dug up, or been fed, tidbits about what Mueller’s team is looking at and rushed into print with claims that he’s … going to nab President Trump for obstruction of justice, or show the Russians used the NRA to elect Trump, or expose Russian funding of Trump projects long ago — whatever.

And the supposed dirt inevitably comes from anonymous sources, making it impossible for readers to judge what spin has been introduced along the way.

No matter: Each report triggers days of MSNBC mouth-frothing over the pending end of Trump, and outrage on the right over the latest “smear” — complete with calls for Mueller’s head that (bizarrely) assume the Trump-hating liberal media have the story right.

The Photo That Never Saw The Light of Day: Obama With Farrakhan In 2005

A journalist announced last week that he will publish a photograph of then-Illinois Sen. Barack Obama (D) and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan that he took in 2005 at a Congressional Black Caucus meeting, but did not make public because he believed it would have “made a difference” to Obama’s political future.

The photographer, Askia Muhammad, told the Trice Edney News Wire that he “gave the picture up at the time and basically swore secrecy.”

“But after the nomination was secured and all the way up until the inauguration; then for eight years after he was President, it was kept under cover,” Muhammad said.

Asked whether he thought the photo’s release would have affected Obama’s presidential campaign, Muhammad said, “I insist. It absolutely would have made a difference.”

Reached by TPM on Thursday, Muhammad said a “staff member” for the CBC contacted him “sort of in a panic” after he took the photo at a caucus meeting in 2005.

Turmeric boosts memory by nearly 30% and eases depression

Turmeric may boost people's memories by nearly 30 percent and ease depression, new research suggests.

Taking a compound found in the popular Indian spice, known as curcumin, causes people to have significantly less protein build-up in the regions of the brain associated with memory and emotion, a US study found.

Past studies have linked the onset of Alzheimer's disease to the accumulation of protein plaques in the brain.

Curcumin, which gives turmeric its yellow color, is thought to improve memory and boost mental health due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation has previously been linked to both dementia and severe depression.

China's illegal opioids enter U.S. through Postal Service gaps: probe

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Illegal shipments of the powerful and addictive opioid fentanyl are pouring into the United States by mail from China and the U.S. Postal Service must step up the use of high-tech detection methods to fight the problem, according to a congressional report unveiled on Wednesday.

A year-long probe by a Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs investigations subcommittee found there is easy access for buyers in the United States to purchase fentanyl, often in relatively large quantities, through the internet.

The drugs are mailed by “labs” in China to individuals who consume them or to middlemen who dilute them for resale.

Investigators refused to divulge the names of the labs.

Trust Fund Annual Report; Pocomoke River Boating Slips

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources released today the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund 2018Annual Report, which details the program’s activities, expenditures and initiatives, including restoring 2,700 acres of wetlands, installing 1,161 acres of riparian buffer and educating and engaging over 34,600 students and volunteers.

The Trust Fund focuses limited financial resources on the most cost-effective and efficient pollution control and mitigation projects.

Governor Larry Hogan has continued to demonstrate his commitment to Chesapeake Bay restoration by fully funding the Trust Fund for the last three years.

“The Trust Fund is so successful enhancing and improving our environment and natural resources because of its singular focus on reducing nutrients and sediment before they reach our treasured watersheds, but the benefits reach far beyond improved water quality,” Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. “By leveraging local partnerships and utilizing innovative technologies, these critical state investments also work to improve our state’s resilience to climate change, expand natural habitats and grow and sustain local communities and economies.”

Since 2009, the environmental financing program has directed $400 million to local governments and nonprofits for more than 2,200 nonpoint source pollution projects. Staff works with local partners on using natural systems and stormwater best management practices to improve the Chesapeake Bay, coastal bays and local waterways.

Governor Hogan’s investment of $52.9 million in the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund, includes $23.13 million to aid local communities meet their nutrient and sediment reduction goals in support of the state’s Watershed Implementation Plan. In addition to competitive grants, the Trust Fund will also provide $11.25 million for cover crops and $3.29 million to support local soil conservation districts.

The Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund is a collaborative effort between the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Department of Agriculture, Maryland Department of the Environment, Maryland Department of Planning and University of Maryland.

Trump administration wants work requirements for food stamps

The Trump administration is pressing for additional work requirements for people receiving food stamps from the government.

In a four-page document released Wednesday, the Department of Agriculture made several suggestions for farm bill legislation being crafted in Congress, writing that it supports "work as the pathway to self-sufficiency, well-being, and economic mobility for individuals and families receiving supplemental nutrition assistance." The program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, was formerly known as food stamps and covers 45.6 million people.

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue elaborated on the recommendations in a Wednesday event in Pennsylvania with reporters, according to Bloomberg.

“It’s evident that there are able-bodied adults without dependents who are on the food stamp program, who we believe it is in their best interests, and their families’ best interests, to move into an independent lifestyle,” he said. “During the last downturn, it became a lifestyle for some people. We don’t want it to become permanent.”

Baltimore Police Department A Disaster

The Baltimore Police Department is under federal corruption investigations into nine of its officers, its police commissioner was fired last week, and now two other top cops have resigned.

Mayor Catherine Pugh’s firing of former-Commissioner Kevin Davis came after roughly a year of racketeering and evidence-planting investigations into various Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers. Davis’ Friday firing was quickly followed by resignations from two of his top deputies on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner Jason Johnson and Chief Ganesha Martin, the head of the Department of Justice Compliance, Accountability and External Affairs Division, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Remaining administrators have assured, however, the losses will not affect BPD’s ability to enact federally mandated reforms.

“The change in administrative personnel has no bearing on our commitment to the reforms that are being implemented by the monitor or on our responsiveness to the consent decree,” police spokesman T.J. Smith told reporters.

Dr. Seuss Museum Channels Its Inner Taliban

The removal of a mural showing a classic illustration from the Dr. Seuss museum in Springfield is a sad example of how surrendering to the forces of emotional hypochondria leads to irrelevance.

In October, three children’s authors cancelled a scheduled joint appearance at The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum because a mural from Dr. Seuss’s 1937 book And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street showed an image from the book of a Chinese man wearing a traditional hat eating noodles from a bowl with chopsticks.

The authors released a statement calling the image “a form of racism,” along with other absurdities, such as this: “For some children who visit the museum, their only form of interaction with Asian representation might be that painting.”

Yeah, right. And those same impressionable kids probably think that China depends on the Dragon Warrior from Kung Fu Panda for national defense.

"This report gives Maryland taxpayers a glimpse at how the complicated and sweeping reforms will impact their tax liabilities, at least in the short term," said Comptroller Franchot. "What remains to be seen is whether this plan provides long-term economic growth or if the predicted benefits are front-loaded and we'll be left with a big bill to pay down the road."

The report estimates a cumulative federal income tax cut of roughly $2.8 billion for Maryland residents in tax year 2018. Seventy-one percent of Marylanders will pay less federal tax, 13 percent will pay more and 16 percent will see no change to their federal obligation. The roughly two million taxpayers expected to benefit will see an average gain of $1,741 per taxpayer.

The reduced federal liabilities are largely the result of several provisions in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act: the doubling of the child tax credit, modifications to the standard deduction allowed for each filing status, changes to federal tax brackets and lower tax rates and a new deduction for qualified business income.

The impact on individual taxpayers' state and local tax bills depends on whether they aim to minimize their combined federal-state-local tax burden or focus on their federal tax. Assuming most taxpayers prioritize greater overall savings, 68 percent of Marylanders would see no change in the amount of state and local tax owed, 28 percent would pay more and 4 percent would pay less.

The driving factors behind the changes to state and local income tax bills are the taxpayer shift to the State standard deduction – a consequence of taxpayers' choices to no longer itemize at the federal level – and related changes to itemized deductions for such things as real estate taxes and home equity indebtedness. In addition, taxable income changes for moving expenses, alimony and 529 College Savings Accounts.

As for the impact on the state's coffers, the report estimates Maryland's general fund would increase by $28.7 million and $392.5 million in fiscal years 2018 and 2019, respectively. The Education Trust Fund would realize an additional $867,000 and $5.1 million, respectively.

Changes to the tax code will result in fewer charitable contributions because those donations don't carry the same tax benefit as they had previously, according to the report. Some taxpayers may no longer benefit directly from home ownership, which may have an impact on housing prices.

While the report does indicate that more money will be placed in the hands of consumers and investors, creating positive economic impacts, it is unclear how the cost of the reform ($1.5 trillion added to the deficit in 10 years) will impact interest rates.

Lastly, the report points out the looming issue of funding requirements for existing entitlement obligations, such as Social Security and Medicare. If the tax cut does not pay for itself, the federal fiscal situation will be even more dire and will negatively impact the state's and the nation's economy.

The full report can be viewed online here.

Breaking News: The U.S. economy showed continuing resilience in last year's fourth quarter, growing at a 2.6 percent annual rate

The economy grew at an annual rate of 2.6 percent in the final quarter of 2017, the government reported Friday, finishing off the year on a firm footing — though short of the heady 4 percent annual growth that President Trump has promised.

Combined with a sinking jobless rate, a surging stock market and a sunny outlook, the estimated overall 2.3 percent rise in the nation’s output last year is a sign of the American economy’s continuing resilience.

Snowfall Thus Far

Here is a look at the total snowfall for the winter thus far at 3 of our major climate sites (Norfolk, Richmond, and Salisbury, MD). Total snowfall for this winter so far is already running above the total amount of snowfall received last winter. We have also surpassed normal snowfall at both Norfolk and Salisbury. There are still plenty of opportunities left for additional snowfall this winter.

Berlin’s ‘Winningest Bathtub’ Donated To Welcome Center

BERLIN – The “winningest bathtub in Berlin history” is now on display at the town’s welcome center in honor of the late Jesse Turner.

Berlin residents Frank and Susan Baker have donated the bathtub that so often triumphed in the Berlin Bathtub Races to the town. The bathtub on wheels is now a centerpiece in the Berlin Welcome Center.

“We’re very excited that we had this opportunity today to accept Jesse Turner’s famous bathtub racer that is an iconic source of pride to our community,” Mayor Gee Williams said.

Turner, the longtime owner of the Berlin Shoe Box, was instrumental in helping the Berlin Chamber of Commerce start the town’s popular bathtub races in 1990. In the ensuing two decades, his bathtub went on to win at least five times.

Maryland Joins Partnership Encouraging Young Women to Explore Careers in Cybersecurity

Governor Larry Hogan Announces State Participation in GirlsGoCyberStart Initiative

ANNAPOLIS, MD -
Governor Larry Hogan today announced Maryland’s participation in an innovative cybersecurity training partnership with the SANS Institute, the largest provider of cybersecurity training and certification to professionals at governments and commercial institutions worldwide. This partnership will inspire the next generation of cybersecurity professionals and identify talented youth in Maryland. Open to female high school students, the GirlsGoCyberStart initiative encourages participants to explore their interests in cyber studies, learn core cybersecurity skills, and build confidence in problem-solving.

“Our administration is committed to ensuring Maryland’s young women have access to the resources they need to pursue exciting careers in STEM fields,” said Governor Hogan. “Initiatives like GirlsGoCyberStart engage our students and ensure that the next generation of Maryland women will become innovators and leaders in the 21st century workforce.”

This announcement follows the governor’s ACCESS Initiative (Achievement Computer Science Collaborations for Employing Students Statewide), a comprehensive computer science education and workforce development plan, which was announced last year. Earlier this month, Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford attended a meeting of the Girls Who Code Club and delivered remarks at the Society of Women Engineers, Baltimore-Washington Section Rube Goldberg Competition, an event where students compete to design a machine that uses the most complex process to complete a simple task.

New Mexico Chili Cook-Off

For those of you who have lived in New Mexico, you know how true this is. They actually have a Chili Cook-off about the time Halloween comes around. It takes up a major portion of a parking lot at the Santa Fe Plaza. Judge #3 was an inexperienced Chili taster named Robert, who was visiting from North Carolina.

Robert: "Recently, I was honored to be selected as a judge at a chili cook-off. The original person called in sick at the last moment and I happened to be standing there at the judge's table, asking for directions to the Coors Light truck, when the call came in. I was assured by the other two judges (Native New Mexicans) that the chili wouldn't be all that spicy; and besides, they told me I could have free beer during the tasting, so I accepted and became Judge #3."

Here are the scorecard notes from the event:

CHILI # 1 - MIKE'S MANIAC MONSTER CHILI
Judge # 1 -- A little too heavy on the tomato. Amusing kick.

Judge # 2 -- Nice, smooth tomato flavor. Very mild.

Judge # 3 (Robert) -- Holy crap, what the hell is this stuff? You could remove dried paint from your driveway. Took me two beers to put the flames out. I hope that's the worst one. These New Mexicans are crazy.

CHILI # 2 - EL RANCHO'S AFTERBURNER CHILI

Judge # 1 -- Smoky, with a hint of pork. Slight jalapeno tang.

Judge # 2 -- Exciting BBQ flavor, needs more peppers to be taken seriously.

Judge # 3 -- Keep this out of the reach of children. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to taste besides pain. I had to wave off two people who wanted to give me the Heimlich maneuver. They had to rush in more beer when they saw the look on my face.

CHILI # 3 - ALFREDO'S FAMOUS BURN DOWN THE BARN CHILI

Judge # 1 -- Excellent firehouse chili. Great kick.

Judge # 2 -- A bit salty, good use of peppers.

Judge # 3 -- Call the EPA. I've located a uranium spill. My nose feels like I have been snorting Drano. Everyone knows the routine by now. Get me more beer before I ignite. Barmaid pounded me on the back, now my backbone is in the front part of my chest. I'm getting sh*t-faced from all of the beer.

CHILI # 4 - BUBBA'S BLACK MAGIC

Judge # 1 -- Black bean chili with almost no spice. Disappointing.

Judge # 2 -- Hint of lime in the black beans. Good side dish for fish or other mild foods, not much of a chili.
Judge # 3 -- I felt something scraping across my tongue, but was unable to taste it. Is it possible to burn out taste buds? Sally, the beer maid, was standing behind me with fresh refills. This 300 lb. woman is starting to look HOT ... just like this nuclear waste I'm eating! Is chili an aphrodisiac?

CHILI # 5 - LISA'S LEGAL LIP REMOVER

Judge # 1 -- Meaty, strong chili. Jalapeno peppers freshly ground, adding considerable kick. Very impressive.

Judge # 2 -- Chili using shredded beef, could use more tomato. Must admit the jalapeno peppers make a strong statement.

Judge # 3 -- My ears are ringing, sweat is pouring off my forehead and I can no longer focus my eyes. I farted, and four people behind me needed paramedics. The contestant seemed offended when I told her that her chili had given me brain damage. Sally saved my tongue from bleeding by pouring beer directly on it from the pitcher. I wonder if I'm burning my lips off. It really ticks me off that the other judges asked me to stop screaming. Screw them.

CHILI # 6 - VARGA'S VERY VEGETARIAN VARIETY

Judge # 1 -- Thin yet bold vegetarian variety chili. Good balance of spices and peppers.

Judge # 2 -- The best yet. Aggressive use of peppers, onions, garlic. Superb.

Judge # 3 -- My intestines are now a straight pipe filled with gaseous, sulfuric flames. I crapped on myself when I farted, and I'm worried it will eat through the chair. No one seems inclined to stand behind me except that Sally. Can't feel my lips anymore. I need to wipe my butt with a snow cone.

CHILI # 7 - SUSAN'S SCREAMING SENSATION CHILI

Judge # 1 -- A mediocre chili with too much reliance on canned peppers.

Judge # 2 -- Ho hum, tastes as if the chef literally threw in a can of chili peppers at the last moment. **I should take note that I am worried about Judge #3. He appears to be in a bit of distress as he is cursing uncontrollably.
Judge # 3 -- You could put a grenade in my mouth, pull the pin, and I wouldn't feel a thing.. I've lost sight in one eye, and the world sounds like it is made of rushing water. My shirt is covered with chili, which slid unnoticed out of my mouth. My pants are full of lava to match my shirt. At least during the autopsy, they'll know what killed me. I've decided to stop breathing. It's too painful. Screw it; I'm not getting any oxygen anyway. If I need air, I'll just suck it in through the 4-inch hole in my stomach.

CHILI # 8 - BIG TOM'S TOENAIL CURLING CHILI

Judge # 1 -- The perfect ending, this is a nice blend chili. Not too bold but spicy enough to declare its existence.
Judge # 2 -- This final entry is a good, balanced chili. Neither mild nor hot. Sorry to see that most of it was lost when Judge #3 farted, passed out, fell over and pulled the chili pot down on top of himself. Not sure if he's going to make it. Poor fella, wonder how he'd have reacted to really hot chili?

Judge # 3 -- No report

The Jewish ELBOW

A Jewish grandmother is giving directions to her grown grandson who is coming to visit with his wife.

"You come to the front door of the apartment. I am in apartment 301. There is a big panel at the front door. With your elbow, push button 301. I will buzz you in. Come inside, the elevator is on the right. Get in, and with your elbow, push 3. When you get out, I'm on the left.. With your elbow, hit my doorbell."

"Grandma, that sounds easy, but, why am I hitting all these buttons with my elbow? .........

Irish blonde...

An attractive blonde from Cork, Ireland, arrived at the casino. She seemed a little intoxicated and bet twenty thousand dollars in a single roll of the dice.

She said, "I hope you don't mind, but I feel much luckier when I'm completely nude." With that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and with an Irish brogue yelled, "Come on, baby, Mama needs new clothes!"

As the dice came to a stop, she jumped up and down and squealed. "Yes! Yes! I won, I won!" She hugged each of the dealers, picked up her winnings and her clothes and quickly departed. The dealers stared at each other dumbfounded. Finally, one of them asked, "What did she roll?" The other answered, "I don't know - I thought you were watching."

MORAL OF THE STORY

Not all Irish are drunks, not all blondes are dumb, ..... but all men...are men!

Gov. Hogan yanks $1.25M in funding for National Sailing Hall of Fame

Gov. Larry Hogan has removed $1.25 million in capital funding for the National Sailing Hall of Fame as the organization moves closer to solidifying a deal in Rhode Island and moving out of Annapolis. The money was deauthorized in Hogan’s fiscal 2019 budget in part because of failure to meet fundraising goals. The summary of the decision lists the project “on hold.” The Hogan administration also has not given the organization another $2 million, originally planned as a follow up to the $1.25 million grant. “The National Sailing Hall Fame has consistently failed to meet their obligations under the Memorandum of Understanding with the state,” said Shareese N. Churchill, a Hogan spokeswoman.
