Mayor makes startling disclosure on looters

'People started driving in from other areas to steal stuff'

The mayor of Ferguson, Missouri, says many of the people who smashed, looted, burned and destroyed in the aftermath of protests following a fatal police shooting of a teenager were out-of-towners.
Once the vigil dispersed, the people who showed up saw their numbers and got really brave, then people started driving in from other areas to steal stuff,” Mayor James Knowles told WND.

“A lot of the people aren’t even from our town; but they came in and stole from our businesses and left our town in ruins, and made it look like there are racial tensions here that simply aren’t what they made them out to be. Such a shame that we have people with an axe to grind, coming here to grind it,” he said.

His comments came as the town approached its second night since the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, 18, whose death remained under investigation.

DOJ Told Ferguson Police Not To Show Mike Brown’s Robbery Video

Surveillance video allegedly showing Mike Brown stealing ‘rellos from a convenience store may have been released sooner if the Department of Justice did not tell the local police to keep it to themselves, saying that it would “increase tensions in the community.”

A note to the DOJ: Transparency is always the best policy.

In a written statement, the Brown family said in part,
The prolonged release of the officer’s name and then the subsequent alleged information regarding a robbery is the reason why the family and the local community have such distrust for the local law enforcement agencies.

72-Year-Old Man Knocked to Ground in West Village Attack

WEST VILLAGE — A 72-year-old man was punched in the face in an apparently random attack in the West Village Monday afternoon, police said.

The victim, identified by sources as Donald Lathrom, was knocked to the ground with a single hit as he walked past a man waiting in front of 99 Jane St., a doorman building in a residential part of the Village between Washington Street and West Street.

Lathrom, a dog walker who a friend said once drove a cab, lives nearby, sources said.

Melvin Smith, 63, said he has been Lathrom's neighbor for 17 years.

"Don's just a very, very nice guy, sweet hearted," Smith said. ''We're New York Giants fans, so we hang out together. We follow football. We talk about the games. He's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet.''

Clambaker-in-chief: Obama scorched for vacations

He 'fiddles' while Middle East burns,' says watchdog

Presidential vacations have a way of rubbing people the wrong way, but the timing of President Obama’s latest lavish getaway has raised more than a few eyebrows.

With Ebola running loose on the African continent, with a terrorist group beheading Christians in Iraq and threatening to take over the country, with a border crisis at home and race riots in the streets of suburban St. Louis, it seems like the world is spinning out of control at the same time the Obamas are relaxing at a hidden hideaway on Martha’s Vineyard.

And people are taking notice.

“The president has many fans on the island, but we’re told even some of Obama’s most ardent supporters are questioning the wisdom of this summer’s sojourn as war roils Gaza and a wave of families and children are crossing the southwestern U.S. border illegally,” reported the Boston Globe.

NAFTA Is 20 Years Old – Here Are 20 Facts That Show How It Is Destroying The Economy

Back in the early 1990s, the North American Free Trade Agreement was one of the hottest political issues in the country. When he was running for president in 1992, Bill Clinton promised that NAFTA would result in an increase in the number of high quality jobs for Americans that it would reduce illegal immigration. Ross Perot warned that just the opposite would happen.

He warned that if NAFTA was implemented there would be a “giant sucking sound” as thousands of businesses and millions of jobs left this country. Most Americans chose to believe Bill Clinton. Well, it is 20 years later and it turns out that Perot was right and Clinton was dead wrong. But now history is repeating itself, and most Americans don’t even realize that it is happening. As you will read about at the end of this article, Barack Obama has been negotiating a secret trade treaty that is being called “NAFTA on steroids”, and if Congress adopts it we could lose millions more good paying jobs.

It amazes me how the American people can fall for the same lies over and over again. The lies thatserial liar Barack Obama is telling about “free trade” and the globalization of the economy are the same lies that Bill Clinton was telling back in the early 1990s. The following is an excerpt from arecent interview with Paul Craig Roberts

Mystery over massive Alexander-era tomb unearthed in Greece

Maryland Police Receive Millions In Military Gear

Local police departments in Maryland have received more than $12 million in excess equipment from the U.S. military — from a $400,000 "mine-resistant vehicle" to a set of a dozen spoons valued at $3.06 apiece — through a federal program that has come under bipartisan scrutiny.

In all, local law enforcement agencies in the state have received more than 2,000 assault rifles, 873 semi-automatic handguns and 220 12-gauge shotguns from the Department of Defense Excess Property Program since 2006, according to Pentagon data made public Friday.

Unused military equipment has flowed freely to police for years, but the practice received renewed attention last week after officers were seen in Ferguson, Mo., wearing camouflage and driving armored vehicles. Police and residents in Ferguson have clashed after the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, on Aug. 9.

Feds Won't Tell Texas School Districts How Many Unaccompanied Minors to Expect

HOUSTON, Texas -- This school year, Texas taxpayers will likely be on the hook for approximately $45 million to educate the wave of Central American children who entered the U.S. illegally during recent months. Thousands of unaccompanied minors are expected to attend Texas public schools this year. Despite this, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is unable to put plans in place for accommodating the minors--the federal government has not revealed the number of foreign students to expect in each school district.

A TEA spokeswoman told Breitbart Texas, "We just don't know at this point whether to expect the children to enroll or not. It's hard to plan. We keep hoping for some more definitive information, but we just don't have it at this point."

Check out the Foster Care stipends for each state at: http://www.childrensrights.org/policy-projects/foster-care/hitting-the-marc-foster-care-reimbursement-rates/foster-care-rates-by-state/ The rates vary widely. There are about 11,000 kids in foster care in Maryland. The max per kid (not including other stipends) is $750 per month. There are increases to this number based on other needs, such as medical care or monitoring within the home. Maryland has among the highest rates in the nation. Another facet of the poverty magnet that Maryland (and Salisbury) has become.

Berlin, AGH Settle Stormwater Utility Dispute

BERLIN — Atlantic General Hospital (AGH) and the town of Berlin have reached a settlement over stormwater fee requirements that spent months in dispute bouncing around the legal system.

The settlement will be a restructuring of the fees that the hospital pays to Berlin’s Stormwater Utility as well as a new annual grant between the town and AGH. All agree the resolution was amicable and the town at least hopes that the settlement represents the last of community pushback against the fledgling utility.

The initial lawsuit began when AGH balked at the amount of stormwater management fees the town leveled upon it. Noting that they are a non-profit hospital and already modern with their internal stormwater management practices, AGH took the issue to court this winter claiming that it was being charged approximately $9,000 in unjustified fees.

A settlement was finally reached in July that will set the hospital’s annual stormwater fee at $3,200 for the existing grounds. Should the hospital campus change the additions will be subject to a different fee structure.

Democrats feel a fall in the air

High times on Capitol Hill could be coming to an end

President Obama is on a two-week vacation in Martha’s Vineyard, as wars rage across the Middle East and Ukraine, terrorists threaten to topple Iraq, and Republicans are on the brink of capturing the Senate.

Around the country, a deepening mood of anger and anxiety permeates America’s electorate, with the midterm elections less than three months away.

In a brewing political civil war among Democrats, Hillary Clinton has unleashed a sharp attack on Mr. Obama’s timid foreign policy, calling for a more muscular response to the spread of global terrorism.

The president’s job-approval scores remain in the low 40s and show no signs of improvement on the problems voters are angry about — from jobs, incomes and the budget deficits to a rash of disturbing government scandals that have exposed an incompetent and corrupt administration.

Wages in U.S. down 23 percent since 2008, report shows

While 8.7 million jobs have been regained since the 2008 recession, they are paying much less, by an average of 23 percent, according to a report released Monday by the United States Conference of Mayors.

The report comes as debate continues about income inequality in the United States.

"While the economy is picking up steam, income inequality and wage gaps are an alarming trend that must be addressed," said Conference of Mayors President Kevin Johnson, the mayor of Sacramento, Calif., in a news release. "We cannot put our heads in the sand on these issues."

The annual wage in sectors where jobs were lost, particularly in manufacturing and construction, during the recession was $61,637, but the average wage of new jobs through the second quarter of 2014 is $47,131, the report shows.

It represents a loss of $93 billion in wages, according to the report. (Go below to see the full report. Mobile users can see it here.)

OCBP Sergeant Saves Choking Boy In Va. Beach

OCEAN CITY – Ocean City Beach Patrol Sgt. Jamie Falcon found himself at the right place at the right time last week when he saved the life of an infant at a lifeguard competition in Virginia Beach.

In the midst of hundreds of lifeguards at the Nautica United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) National Lifeguard Championships in Virginia Beach on Friday, Falcon found himself saving the life of a one-year old boy who was choking on a potato chip.

“We had just finished our events and I was standing with my family telling my wife how thrilled I was the stress was over because Beach Flags is like being a basketball referee,” said Falcon, who serves as an official for Beach Flags and was judging the competition. “My wife realized there was something going on. There was a crowd of people converging on the middle of the beach, so I ran over. There was someone holding the baby, and he was doing back blows but they were not sufficient. I said I would take him and he handed the child to me.”

The stoplight celebrates its centennial

If you've just finished a frustrating commute crawling through traffic, imagine how much worse your daily drive might be without some roadway essentials,
like lane markers, speed limit signs — and the traffic light.

Red, yellow, green, those three colors have become a ubiquitous part of our modern lives, but it wasn't always that way. In fact,
the first electric traffic light didn't make its appearance until nearly a year after Henry Ford switched on the world's first moving assembly line.

As with many breakthroughs, there are plenty of conflicting claims, but historians generally agree that the first true stoplight was installed on the
corner of Euclid and 105th in Cleveland 100 years ago this week.

Suspect Apprehended in Lewes Bank Robbery

Lewes - A 40 year old man from Georgetown, Delaware has been apprehended in connection with the robbery of a Lewes bank, which occurred yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred on Friday, August 15, 2014 at approximately 4:36 p.m. as a male suspect entered the County Bank located at 1609 Savannah Road, Village of Five Points, Lewes. The suspect approached the female teller, forcibly removed money that she was counting from her hand, and then demanded more. The teller complied and turned over an undisclosed amount of cash. The victim fled the bank on foot and was observed getting into a white Dodge Stratus fleeing the parking lot. There were no injuries as a result of this incident.

At approximately 7:00 p.m. an Officer from Laurel Police Department observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle involved in the County Bank robbery and attempted to initiate a traffic stop on US13 southbound. The Dodge fled southbound on US 13 and was later stopped on Line Road (SR54), Maryland, where the suspect later identified as Christopher Didio-40 of Georgetown, Delaware, was taken into custody without incident.

Through further investigation and interviews, Troopers were able to identify and connect Christopher Didio to the County Bank robbery in Lewes. He is also a suspect in a bank robbery which occurred in the Seaford Police Department’s jurisdiction earlier on Friday.

He is currently being held in Maryland on a Fugitive Warrant pending extradition back to Delaware where he will be formally charged with Robbery 2nd degree and related charges in connection with the County Bank robbery. The investigation is ongoing and a release will be disseminated including a booking photo upon his return to Delaware and formal charging.

Information surrounding the Seaford bank robbery should be directed to the Seaford Police Department.

Rand Paul: Police Militarization Makes Americans, Esp. Blacks, Feel 'Gov't Is Targeting Them'

After another night of violent confrontations between police and demonstrators in Ferguson, Missouri, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) argued Thursday that big government has gone too far in militarizing local police forces.

Ahead of a potential 2016 presidential run, it was another chance for Paul's liberty-centered philosophy to appeal to libertarians and black voters.

After police shot and killed an unarmed black teenager over the weekend, Ferguson residents rioted, looted, and protested this week. The police response has escalated each day, with police on Wednesday firing pepper spray and tear gas and arresting two D.C. journalists.

"Americans must never sacrifice their liberty for an illusive and dangerous, or false, security," he wrote in a Thursday op-ed for Time. "The outrage in Ferguson is understandable—though there is never an excuse for rioting or looting. There is a legitimate role for the police to keep the peace, but there should be a difference between a police response and a military response. The images and scenes we continue to see in Ferguson resemble war more than traditional police action."

The Breadwinner in the Family

Are you ready for this one. Hang on. We are indeed a great society,
America

The new breadwinner in the family...

An emergency room physician told me that a woman in her late 20's came to the ER today with her 8th pregnancy.

She told the first doctor she saw: "My Mama told me that I am the breadwinner for the family." He asked her to explain. She said that she can make babies, and babies get money from the State for the family. It goes like this:

The Grandma calls the Department of Child & Family Services, and states that the unemployed daughter is not capable of caring for all of her kids. DCFS agrees, and tells her the children will need to go into foster care.

The Grandma then volunteers to be the foster parent, and receives a check for $1500 per child each month in Illinois.

Total yearly income: $144,000 tax-free and nobody has to go to work!

In fact, they get more if there is no husband/father/man in the home!
Not to mention free healthcare (Medicaid), plus a monthly card entitling them to free groceries and a voucher for 250 free Obamaphone minutes each month. This does not include WIC and other welfare benefits...that they are "entitled" to.

Indeed, Grandma was correct that her fertile daughter is the
"breadwinner" for the family.
Worse, the Muslims have been paying attention, and by mandating that each Muslim family have eleven children, they will soon replace the voting bloc above and can be running this country within 25 years. Read the above again, until it sinks in, and then ask yourself if your Children, Grandchildren, and Great Grandchildren will survive these severe changes to America !!!

Are You alarmed yet? Is anybody listening?

Is this a GREAT COUNTRY or what...?

Don't forget to pay your taxes! There are a lot of "breadwinners"
depending on you!

There are a lot of "breadwinners" depending on you!

Al Gore Sues Al Jazeera Over $500M Current TV Deal

Former Vice President Al Gore is suing Al Jazeera for not paying the full $500 million price for his cable news network, Current TV.

Gore, who filed the lawsuit in Chancery Court in Wilmington, Delaware, Friday with Current TV co-founder Joel Hyatt, is being represented by lawyer David Boies, who was also his attorney in his bid to have a Florida recount in the 2000 presidential race he lost to George W. Bush, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Al Jazeera wants to give itself a discount on the purchase price that was agreed to nearly two years ago," said Boies. "We are asking the court to order Al Jazeera America to stop wrongfully withholding escrow funds that belong to Current’s former shareholders."

Boies and Al Jazeera have agreed to have the case sealed, even though Gore’s lawyer says he’s hoping it will eventually become public.

Italian Doctor Claims to Have Found the Secret to Head Transplants

An Italian scientist has said that head transplants may be possible, after claiming to have had a "major breakthrough".

The Local reports that Sergio Canavero, a neuroscientist, said it may be possible to merge bone marrow when fusing one person's head with another's spine. Writing for the journal Frontier Neurology, he said that operation could be made possible by using membrane-fusing substances called fusogens, injected between the two stumps.

Canavero received a barrage of criticism last year after publishing his initial research in which he said that head transplants could be made possible by severing the heads of both patients before cooling and cleaning out the "recipient" head and then attaching it to the new body with polymer glue.

His findings have been dismissed by Dr Calum MacKellar of the Scottish Council of Human Bioethics, however. MacKellar told the Local, “Changing the bone marrow has been done for years, especially with cancer patients.

"But the biggest problem with this kind of transplant would be the nerves, and that’s still not possible."

Facing Blowback, Navy Retreats From Removing Hotel Bibles

Bombarded by angry protests, the U.S. Navy has reversed a decision to remove copies of the Bible from guest rooms at Navy base lodges as demanded by an atheist group.

Fox News reports that the Navy has overridden an order from Navy Exchange Command (NEXCOM) to remove the Bibles pending a review of the situation and, in the meantime, Bibles that were removed from Navy guest rooms will be returned.

Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) attorney Andrew Seidel filed a complaint stating, "Providing Bibles to guests in Navy-run hotels amounts to government endorsement of that religious text" and is, therefore, unconstitutional.

The FFRF even complained that copies of the Book of Mormon or the Koran were not to be found in Navy lodgings.

Common Core anger triggers homeschooling surge in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina officials say there has been a huge increase over the past two years in the number of Tar Heel families who have pulled their kids out of public schools and begun educating them at home.

The number of homeschools has jumped 27 percent since the 2011-12 school year, NewsObserver.com reports.

As of last year, 98,172 North Carolinian children were homeschooled; that’s 2,400 students more than the number who attended a private school.

While the sputtering economy is the reason families are choosing homeschooling over private schooling, the nationalized learning experiment (Common Core) is the main reason families are leaving the public schools in the first place.

“Common Core is a big factor that I hear people talk about,” Beth Herbert, founder of Lighthouse Christian Homeschool Association, told NewsObserver.com. “They’re not happy with the work their kids are coming home with. They’ve decided to take their children home.”

In-the-know parents understand that Common Core’s plodding approach to math instruction leaves students unprepared for college study in STEM courses – science, technology, engineering and math.

These same parents also realize that the nationalized learning standards’ emphasis of nonfiction, “informational” texts over classic literature is intended to mold students into drone-like workers, not out-of-the-box thinkers.

Pregnant woman hit in ‘knockout game’ attack

A pregnant woman was sucker-punched in the back of the head Thursday afternoon — and may be the latest victim of the creepy “knockout game,” law enforcement sources said. Jannatul Ferdous, a 34-year-old Brooklyn resident who is six months pregnant, was walking down a sidewalk in Bedford-Stuyvesant alongside her sister when Willie Stephens, 33, allegedly sneaked up behind her and socked her in the head around 3:45 p.m. Thursday, sources said. Ferdous was knocked unconscious during the sudden attack, but neither she nor her child was critically injured. More

20 Big Profitable US Companies Paid No Taxes

U.S. companies are looking for all sorts of ways to reduce their tax bill. But scores of big U.S. companies just paid no taxes or effective tax rates of 0%.

There are 20 companies in the Standard & Poor's 500, including drugmakerMerck (MRK), computer storage company Seagate (STX) and automakerGeneral Motors (GM), which reported effective tax rates of 0% or lower in the second calendar quarter despite reporting a profit during the period, according to a USA TODAY analysis of data from S&P Capital IQ. To be included, the companies also needed to report positive earnings before taxes including unusual items.

This analysis shows that while U.S. companies and investors constantly grumble about corporate tax rates, there are many companies that pay nowhere near the highest rates. This is the rule, not an exception. A 2013 report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that profitable U.S. firms filing a Schedule M-3 paid federal taxes of 13% of pretax worldwide income. That's well below the top 35% statutory rate.

The Police Can’t Order You To Stop Filming Them In Public, Or Force You To Delete Pics From Phone

A good deal of the footage coming out Ferguson, Missouri, this week has been provided by non-journalists, using their phones to record and photograph events. At the same time, reports claim that police are attempting to block both ordinary citizens and journalists from documenting the situation. What these officers either don’t know or aren’t saying is that you have the legal right to photograph the police, even when they tell you not to.

GigaOm’s Jeff John Roberts has a concise piece on the topic that anyone interested should read.

In 2011, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit ruled [PDF] in the case of Glik v. Cunniffe that private citizens have the right to record public officials, including police, in a public place.

The court held that the First Amendment’s proscription on laws “abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press… encompasses a range of conduct related to the gathering and dissemination of information.”

The ruling cites an earlier Supreme Court pronouncement that people have the right to gather news “from any source by means within the law.”

“The filming of government officials engaged in their duties in a public place, including police officers performing their responsibilities, fits comfortably within these principles,” wrote the Appeals Court. “Gathering information about government officials in a form that can readily be disseminated to others serves a cardinal First Amendment interest in protecting and promoting ‘the free discussion of governmental affairs.'”

HISTORICAL COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER 8-16-14

Law Enforcement Through the Years

The history of the Salisbury Police Department is relatively short, compared to how long Salisbury has been in existence. Before 1881, the county sheriff handled all the legal problems. When Salisbury was incorporated, the bailiff for the sheriff at the jail was also the tax collector, clerk and police officer. The first person hired for additional “police” duties was hired in 1881 and was called a night patrolman. His main beat was Main Street from Division Street to the river.

The Court House was built in 1872 and a jail was built behind it in 1879. Before Salisbury had its own jail, prisoners had to taken to the Somerset County Jail. The single building jail was razed in 1936 and an addition was added to the Court House to house both prisoners and the sheriff.

The first official Chief of Police was appointed by Mayor Jehu T. Parsons onMay 23, 1898. His name was Elijah M. Elliott. The whole force consisted of the Chief and three policemen or night watchmen. By 1907, the Chief had only two policemen on the force.

The picture above shows the entire force in 1921. Only five in the picture are policemen. They are Mayor Arthur W. Kennerly, Chief of Police Woodland Disharoon, George H. Williams, Fire Chief Fred A, Grier, Jr., Roland Cahall, George Sullivan and Sydney O. Furniss.

The Police Department’s first attempt to become motorized was in 1927. They purchased a motorcycle that was probably previously owned since it required repairs in early 1928. Their last attempt to utilize a motorcycle was in the 1950’s when one was purchased for use by Sgt. Paul Barnette. He rode it for many years and always led the Christmas parade. For this reason, he became known as Sgt. Santa Claus. I’m sure many can remember him roaring around town on his motorcycle.

As the City of Salisbury grew, so did the Police Department and the sheriff’s duties were confined mostly to the County. Since the city boundaries are so complex, many times the City Police and the County Sheriff’s Department have to co-ordinate their efforts in their pursuit of crime. Modern technology has made some things in crime fighting easier, but it is still a never-ending battle to keep our streets safe.

Ben Carson Overtakes Hillary Clinton In Total Book Sales

Ben Carson’s latest book has just overtaken Hillary Clinton’s new memoir in total book sales.

According to Nielsen BookScan numbers provided to The Daily Caller, as of Aug. 10, Carson’s “One Nation” has sold 225,000 copies, compared to 223,000 copies for Clinton’s “Hard Choices.”

Nielsen BookScan’s survey “currently covers approximately 85 percent of the print book market,” according to the company.

Clinton was reportedly paid a whopping $14 million for her tome, the second highest advance in history. Carson’s advance has not been disclosed, but it is likely a fraction of Clinton’s astronomical fee.

Larry Hogan and Boyd Rutherford Challenge Anthony Brown and Ken Ulman to ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge.”

OCEAN CITY, MD — August 15, 2014 — While campaigning in Ocean City, Md. today, Gubernatorial candidate Larry Hogan and running mate Boyd Rutherford accepted family members’ “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge” and unceremoniously dumped buckets of ice water on their own heads.  Hogan challenged his Democratic opponents, Lt. Governor Anthony Brown and running mate Ken Ulman to accept the Ice Bucket Challenge within 24 hours.

According to Hogan, “Boyd and I were thrilled to participate in such fun way to draw attention to a very serious disease.  We challenge not only our opponents to accept the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge but also our supporters; it’s a great way show that when we come together we can do good and bring change to those in need.”

The Ice Bucket Challenge has become a viral video phenomenon as tens of thousands of Americans have dumped a bucket of ice water on their own heads and challenged others to do the same in support of the ALS Association.

In accepting the challenge Hogan and Rutherford also pledged to donate $100 each the ALS Association.  Since July 29, the viral video campaign has raised millions from tens of thousands of Americans who participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Report: Tax Credits Meant to Help Poor Communities Spent on Doggie Day Care, Sculptures, Breweries

Coburn: ‘When government picks winners and losers, the losers usually end up being taxpayers’

Federal tax credits meant to stimulate the economies of low-income communities have gone to dog day cares, sculptures, recording studios, and breweries, according to a report released by Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.).

Through the New Markets Tax Credit program, tax credits are sold to private investors for development projects in poor communities, amounting to approximately $1 billion in credits every year. The credits are intended to create jobs for poor areas.

However, due to the program’s overly broad definition of what qualifies as a “low-income community,” nearly any city or town in the country is eligible. As a result, credits have been taken advantage of by Hollywood producers, Wall Street bankers, and major corporations, in what Coburn calls a “billionaire’s fantasy island.”

“The New Market Tax Credit is a reverse Robin Hood scheme paid for with the taxes collected from working Americans to provide pay outs to big banks and corporations in the hope that those it took the money from might benefit,” Dr. Coburn said in a statement. “When government picks winners and losers, the losers usually end up being taxpayers.”

Official: Second illegal immigrant wave of 30,000 coming in September, October

A second wave of some 30,000 unaccompanied illegal minors from violence-ravaged Central American nations is expected to swamp the U.S.-Mexico border in September and October, a crisis that could be worse than the one that has already pushed 62,000 children into the U.S., according to a top immigration group.

“Right now it’s just too hard for them to cross, but we expect when it cools down a little bit in August or in September, October, we’ll see another surge again,” said Tiffany Nelmswith the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, a key support group handling the current crisis.

After Heart Attack, More Exercise Isn't Always Better

Heart attack survivors are encouraged to exercise regularly to improve their cardiac health, but new research suggests there's a point of diminishing returns.

"More isn't always better," said study researcher Paul Williams, staff scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif.

Williams tracked nearly 2,400 heart attack survivors from his long-term study of runners and walkers for about 10 years. In general, increased exercise reduced their risk of dying from a heart attack by up to 65 percent, he said.

But running more than 30 miles a week or walking beyond 46 miles weekly had the opposite effect, more than doubling heart attack risk, the study found.

Over the decade-long study, 526 people died, nearly three-quarters because of heart attacks and heart disease.

Because the study was limited to heart attack survivors, Williams can't say if the findings would apply to healthy adults who exercise intensively.
