Mississippi Starts Drug Testing Those Receiving Government Assistance

If we’re going to ask the American people to give their hard earned dollars to people in need, then we have a responsibility to make sure that money is well spent. It shouldn’t be a long-term proposition, it should be going to people who are genuinely in need and it shouldn’t be going to junkies.

It looks like Mississippi is taking the right steps to reducing fraud when it comes to government assistance. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) will now require new applicants to submit a questionnaire that will evaluate the likelihood of substance abuse.

Probe Demanded After Pa. Prosecutor Drops Sting Case Against Democrats

A watchdog group is calling for an independent counsel probe after Pennsylvania’s Democratic attorney general dropped the prosecution of four Democratic legislators accused of taking bribes in exchange for votes.

The Committee of Seventy, a government ethics group in Philadelphia, urged the Pennsylvania legislature Monday to create an independent counsel to conduct “a fair and non-partisan” investigation into the dismissed sting operation.

“The public must be assured that a full and fair review has been conducted by someone without any personal or political interest in the outcome,” said Committee of Seventy President and CEO Zack Stalberg. “There are also extremely disturbing allegations that demand an independent, non-partisan investigation to determine if any laws were violated.”

Romney: Obama Failed To Act On Russia ‘Shen Action Was Possible, And Needed’

Former Massachusetts Gov. and 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney penned a scathing critique of President Obama’s foreign policy in the pages of the Wall Street Journal Tuesday, saying the administration has failed to seize the moment took to intervene in crises around the globe, most recently in Russia and Ukraine.

“When protests in Ukraine grew and violence ensued, it was surely evident to people in the intelligence community — and to the White House — that President Putin might try to take advantage of the situation to capture Crimea, or more,” Mr. Romney wrote in a piece titled “The Price of Failed Leadership.”

“That was the time to talk with our global allies about punishments and sanctions, to secure their solidarity, and to communicate these to the Russian president. These steps, plus assurances that we would not exclude Russia from its base in Sevastopol or threaten its influence in Kiev, might have dissuaded him from invasion,” he wrote.

Strengthen the Born-Alive Infant Protection Act

One year ago, on March 18, 2013, the trial of abortion monster Dr. Kermit Gosnell began in Philadelphia. Two months later Gosnell was convicted on three charges of murder, 21 felony counts of performing illegal late-term abortions, and 211 counts of violating the 24-hour informed consent laws.

Gosnell’s convictions really just reflected the tip of the iceberg of what was going on in that clinic. Until inspectors showed up in February 2010 as result of investigation into suspected illegal drug prescription use, Gosnell’s facility operated uninspected for 17 years. According to the Grand Jury report, the last state inspection, before the 2010 raid, had been in 1993.

Anecdotes of those who worked there suggest the scope of murder, illegal abortions, abuse of women – mostly low income minority and immigrant women – was far beyond what could be adequately documented to stand up for the trial.

IS HOLLYWOOD 'WHITE-TRASHING' AMERICAN TELEVISION?

In the Weekly Standard, John Podhoretz identifies television shows like "Justified," "True Detective," "Breaking Bad," "Sons of Anarchy," and "The Walking Dead" as "Hollywood folk making mincemeat out of poor rural folk" and part of the "ongoing American culture war that should not go unremarked." Podheretz notes that "[e]ven Mad Men’s Don Draper, the well-to-do man from Westchester, was damaged forever by being born to a hooker in rural Illinois and raised by a vicious farmer who beat him regularly."

I'm not so sure.

You can certainly argue that the production design of these shows is Pure White Trash, but when it comes to characterizations of the rural poor and working class, Hollywood has actually come a long way. You can't judge a person by his double-wide.

In jam over Obamacare, Dems don't know which way to turn

When it comes to Obamacare, many Democrats take comfort in polls showing a small majority of voters, or at least a plurality, oppose repealing the Affordable Care Act. To them, that proves the Republicans' do-away-with-it position is out of sync with voters as this November's midterm elections approach.

The argument shows how far Democrats have retreated from the heady days when they rammed Obamacare through Congress over unanimous GOP opposition. Democrats can't argue that most people actually like the new law, and indeed many Democratic candidates have adopted a new mantra that it needs to be "fixed." But at least voters don't want to scrap it altogether.

STATES LOOKING AT $0 COMMUNITY COLLEGE TUITION

Nothing sparks consumer demand like the word "free," and politicians in some states have proposed the idea of providing that incentive to get young people to attend community college.

Amid worries that U.S. youth are losing a global skills race, supporters of a no-tuition policy see expanding access to community college as way to boost educational attainment so the emerging workforces in their states look good to employers.

Of course, such plans aren't free for taxpayers, and legislators in Oregon and Tennessee are deciding whether free tuition regardless of family income is the best use of public money. A Mississippi bill passed the state House, but then failed in the Senate.

Updating General Assembly Races: Over 540 Candidates For 188 Seats

Our eighth monthly roundup of candidates for General Assembly is hopefully complete through the June 24 primary. The Feb. 25 filing deadline has passed, as has the Feb. 27 withdrawal deadline, and the March 4 deadline for the major parties to fill open ballot positions when no one has filed.

As we did last month, we include campaign fundraising totals from 2013 filed with the State Board of Elections in January. The next campaign finance reports are due April 15.

Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Press Release 3-18-14

On 03/09/2014 at approximately 2056 hours, Worcester County Sheriff's Office Deputies arrested David Dwayne Dickerson, age 22, of Pocomoke City with a Circuit Court warrant for Rape-2nd degree and a Sex Offense. Mr. Dickerson is currently being held at the Worcester County Detention Center on $100,000 bond. While serving Mr. Dickerson with the warrant, it was learned that his mother, Tammy Terrail Copes, age 40, also of Pocomoke City, was attempting to hide Dickerson from the Deputy. Copes was later charged with False Statement to a Police Officer and Harboring a Fugitive, and is awaiting trial.

On 03/11/2014 at approximately 1627 hours, Worcester County Sheriff's Office Deputies stopped to render assistance to a disabled vehicle. While identifying its occupants, it was determined that passenger Morris Edward Waters, Sr., age 47, of Pocomoke City had a Delaware warrant for Terroristic Threats and Disorderly Conduct. Mr. Waters was placed under arrest and is currently being held in the Worcester County Detention Center with no bond pending extradition to Delaware.

On March 14th 2014 at 0823 hours, A Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was traveling west on Rt 610, Whaleyville, Worcester, County Maryland

The Deputy observed a gray passenger vehicle traveling east, towards their location, traveling 64 mph in a posted 55 mph zone area. As the vehicle passed the Deputy, the operator of the vehicle touched its brakes and the Deputy observed that the center brake light wasn’t working on the gray passenger vehicle.

A traffic stop was conducted The sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as 22 year old Bryant J Cooper, of Willards Maryland.

The Deputy smelled the odor of Marijuana coming from within the vehicle and a search of the vehicle was conducted.

The Deputy located a smoldering suspected Marijuana cigarette.

Further investigation determined that Mr. Cooper’s license was Suspended/Revoked in the state of Maryland, and that the Delaware Tag on the vehicle was stolen out of Georgetown Delaware.

Mr. Cooper was placed under arrest and charged with speeding, driving while suspended and revoked, and possession of Marijuana. He was seen by the Commissioner and later released on his Personal Recognizance.

The Georgetown Police Department will charge Mr. Cooper with the theft of the tags.

On March 15, 2014 at 2118 hours, Worcester County Sheriff Office was Dispatch to Bishopville Road, for a suspicious vehicle at a residence. The driver of the vehicle who was identified as Mansfield Edward Gott 3rd, 30 years old, of Selbyville DE was passed out behind the wheel with the car still in drive. Mr. Gott appeared to have been drinking. Mr. Gott was arrested and charged with DUI. Mr. Gott was released pending trial.

On March 16, 2014 at 0020 hours a Worcester County Sheriff Office Deputy stopped a vehicle for speed in the area of Ocean Gateway West Bound near Jerry Mack Road. During the stop a K-9 scan was done of the vehicle with a positive alert. The driver was identified as Dana Lee Seidman, 40 of Ridgely Maryland, Ms. Siedman appeared to have been drinking, She was arrested for DUI as well as possession of Marijuana. She was released pending trial.

On March 16, 2014 at approximately 11:42 hours a Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Deputy stopped a vehicle on Route 12 northbound, south of Stockton Road, for 68 mph in a 50 mph zone, the driver was also operating a handheld telephone while the motor vehicle was in motion. When the Deputy approached the vehicle they could smell an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, a search of the vehicle reveled marijuana and paraphernalia used to smoke marijuana.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was Kristie Nolana Dove, 41 years of age, from Severna Park, Maryland. Ms. Dove was issued a warning for the speed violation, a traffic citation for operating a handheld device, and two criminal citations, one for CDS possession of marijuana less than 10 grams, and one for possession of paraphernalia. Ms. Dove was released pending trial.

New Castle – A New Castle man is in custody after being charged with several counts of rape.

The investigation began in January 2013 when a 25-year-old female reported that Jorge Arellano, 35, confronted her in a Wilmington-area parking lot, forced her into his vehicle at gunpoint, and touched her inappropriately while threatening her. The victim, who knew Arellano, was eventually allowed to leave the vehicle.

The Second Chinese Corporate Default: Real Estate Developer With CNY3.5 Billion In Debt Collapses

A few days ago, copper prices and the Chinese stock market were roiled by speculation that another - the second in a row - Chinese bond default may be imminent, in the shape of Baoding Tianwei Baobian Electric (TBE) a maker of electrical equipment and solar panels, whose bonds and stock were suspended from trading a week ago after reporting massive losses. A few days later, TBE "promised" not to defaultwhen its next interest payment is due in July (although how the insolvent company can see that far into the future is just a little confusing). And yet the market shrugged and contrary to its recent idiotic euphoria to surge on even the tiniest of non-horrible news, barely saw a rise. Today we may know the reason: overnight Bloomberg reports that second Chinese corporate bond default may be imminent after the collapse and arrest of the largest shareholder of closely held Chinese real estate developer Zhejiang Xingrun Real Estate Co, which just happens to be saddled with 3.5 billion yuan ($566.6 million) of debt.

Debt which absent a bailout, which at this point is very improbable, will not be repaid.

Legionella Found At A VA Hospital?

The American Federation of Government Employees asks federal safety officials to investigate reports of Legionella at a VA hospital in Illinois. AFGE says some members are concerned that unsafe levels of the bacteria may be present. In a letter to Occupational Safety and Health Administration Director David Michaels, the union accuses the Veterans Affairs Department of having a poor track record of handling Legionella. Five veterans died after contracting Legionnaire's disease at the Pittsburgh VA.

Officer Shoots 20 Yr old in Abdomen for no Obvious Reason

Michael Davidson, a 20-year-old Airman first class, was driving to North Carolina for his assignment at the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base on March 6 when he was shot by a police officer.

His father Billy says Michael got into a minor accident with a truck and both drivers pulled over near Exit 62 on I-85. He described the incident to WSFA:

“I assume the police saw it and pulled, and Michael said he heard screaming or hollering and he saw the lights. He realized it was a police vehicle and he raised up his hand. He had his bill fold at the time he was turning around saying ‘I am an Airmen headed to my…’ and that is as far as he got. As he turned around he felt something hit him and he had been shot,” Billy said.

The Pentagon plans to spend 1.5 billion dollars on a commercial electronic health record system commercial electronic health record system. The Defense Health Agency plans to field the new EHR in phases starting in 2016. It plans to finish by 2019. Budget documents show the agency requested $723 million in 2014 to run its current EHR system. It launched a procurement last month for a replacement. Last week Secretary Eric Shinseki said the VA would bid on the contract with its own EHR. Or else it would use whatever system the Defense Department ends up selecting. The two departments have failed in attempts to combine their electronic health records into a unified system.

Marijuana & Post-Traumatic Stress

The Health and Human Services Department backs a study on marijuana as a treatment for veterans with post-traumatic stress. Researchers have struggled for decades to get federal approval. The Food and Drug Administration cleared the University of Arizona research long ago. But the scientists could not buy marijuana from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The agency's Mississippi research farm is the only federally-sanctioned source of marijuana. HHS approved the purchase in a letter last week.

Army To Drop Sexual Assault Charges Against General

Defense attorneys say that the Army will drop sexual assault charges against a general. Brigadier General Jeffrey Sinclair will plead guilty to lesser charges. The plea deal marks the end of highly visible case. Sinclair is married. He's already pleaded guilty to having improper relationships with three subordinate officers. They include the female captain who accused him of assault. He also pleaded guilty to adultery, a crime in the military. Now he'll also plead guilty to improper use of a government credit card. But Sinclair avoids sexual assault charges, which might have required him to register as a sex offender.

Veterans Finally Being Recognized

President Barack Obama today bestows the Medal of Honor on two dozen Army veterans. The ceremony concludes a 12-year multi-agency investigation of discrimination in the Pentagon's awards process. The veterans are Jewish, latino and black. They received the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second-highest military award for their actions in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. But they were denied the top honor because of their race or ethnicity. Just three are still alive and will be at the White House today.

The Housing Recovery Is Leaving Minorities Behind

It's hard to get a mortgage right now – not just relative to the free-for-all days at the height of the housing boom, but compared even to what now feels like the housing market's last moment of "normal." Let's call that, say, 2001. Back then, lenders weren't doling out loans with the gleeful abandon of the housing bubble. But they were considerably more welcoming than they are today of would-be homeowners without pristine credit.

If we compare the housing market today to this pre-bubble moment, many people who might have qualified for mortgages by 2001 credit standards are walking away empty-handed. In some sense, their loans have gone "missing," a casualty of today's abnormally tight credit.

Exactly how many loans are we talking about? Using the most recent data from 2012, Laurie Goodman, Jun Zhu and Taz George at the Urban Institute's Housing Finance Policy Center peg the number at about 1.2 million. That figure represents would-be borrowers who would have met the credit standards for a mortgage before the bubble ever inflated. These are not your 25-year-old baristas buying a first condo on $30,000 a year circa 2005. These are individuals and families whose credit would have qualified them for a home loan at just about any other moment in recent history.

U.S. Navy Ship Dropping Out Of Search

The Navy ship that's been helping search for the missing Malaysian airliner is dropping out of the hunt. Seventh Fleet officials say long-range aircraft are more efficient at looking over large areas. The USS Kidd, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, will return to its regular duties. It had been searching the Indian Ocean. A spokesman says P-8 Poseidon and older P-3 Orion planes can cover 15 thousand square miles in nine hours. Plus they have special surface radars and other sensors to help operators see what's going on. They can fly very low over the water if crews want a closer look. The airliner disappeared more than a week ago. So far not a trace has been found.

The David Brenner I Knew

What you might not read a lot about my old friend David Brenner is that he absolutely loved Pool. So much so, he opened a Pool Hall in New York City called Amsterdam Billiards. 

I was fortunate enough to meet David back in the 1980's when I was heavy into playing Professional Pool. This guy was absolutely hilarious. 

I could go on and on but I think the best story I can share with you over all the years I knew David was this.

I got a call from him one day asking me to make a trip to New York, he had something for me. At the time I was very heavy into dividing the Men's pro tour from the Women's pro tour. I felt the women were not being treated properly and certainly not being paid properly. 

I also felt that if they divided, the women would actually do better than the men. I'll quickly explain. When you watch the men shoot a difficult shot and they miss, people watching think, man, he should have made that shot. However, when a woman has the same shot, (respectfully) and they miss, most men say, well, I probably would have missed that shot too. Being that ESPN was starting to cover Billiard Tournaments, the timing couldn't be better to divide, so they did. 

That's when I got the call from David to come to New York and spend some time with this KID that was amazing David. He said she just picked up a cue and started beating all the men in his Billiard Room. 

So I got in the car with Chris Sigel and we headed off to New York for a few days. When we got to Amsterdam's, there she was in the back corner practicing. I walked over to the table and asked if she'd like someone to practice with. I could be wrong but I think she was only 17 years old at the time. Her name, Janette Lee, now known as "The Black Widow".

This week, the Tennessee State House voted to delay Common Core testing for two years. The bill, which was sponsored by Representative Timothy Hill, passed by an incredible majority: 82-11.

Delaying Common Core is a huge victory for education freedom. These federal top-down standards were developed by special interests. They take control of school curriculum away from parents and local communities.

All over the country, conservative activists are fighting Common Core. They know these federal standards will dumb-down education and put America behind.

If the next generation of Americans is going to succeed, they need education that fits their unique needs. Common Core’s top-down approach fails at helping individual students.

Tennessee is leading the way by delaying Common Core. And it wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of passionate advocates for liberty.

Maryland, 27 Other States Ask Major Retailers To Stop Selling Tobacco

A group of 28 U.S. attorneys general -- including Maryland's Douglas Gansler -- is urging chief executive officers of five major retailers, including Walmart, to stop selling tobacco products, saying it is contradictory to carry such items in stores that also provide health care services.

The companies receiving a letter on Sunday from the group were Wal-Mart Stores Inc., supermarket operators Kroger Co., Safeway Inc., which operate pharmacies, and drugstore chains Walgreen Co. and Rite Aid Corp.

“Pharmacies and drug stores, which increasingly market themselves as a source for community health care, send a mixed message by continuing to sell deadly tobacco products,” New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in a statement on Monday.

A new law being considered in Iraq could lead to girls as young as eight getting married and wives having to submit to sex at their husband's every request.

The controversial proposals have provoked outrage from activists both within Iraq and around the globe, who see it as a huge step backwards for women's rights.

The measure, aimed at creating different laws for Iraq's majority Shiite population, could further fray the country's divisions amid some of the worst sectarian bloodshed since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

EEOC Sues Transport Company for “failing to accommodate” Muslim Truck Drivers who Refused to Deliver Alcohol

The sharia administration strikes again. The EEOC is suing Star Transport for rightfully terminating two Muslims who refused to do their job. If these Muslim truck drivers don't want to deliver alcohol, then they shouldn't have taken a job in which part of their duties would be to deliver alcohol. It's that simple.

But no, Islamic supremacists chip, chip, chip away at the establishment clause, and in doing so, impose Islam on the secular marketplace. Muslim lawsuits against Hertz, Wal-Mart, Target, Disney and a host of other American businesses for special rights, special accommodation have been largely successful creating a special rights for a special class of people — which is an accordance with Islam (in which Muslims are superior to the kuffar). But it goes against every American tenet of individual rights and separation of mosque and state. Someone ought to remind the EEOC that their name is Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Equal as in no special rights for any particular class.

Snow pushes War on the Shore game back one day

SALISBURY, Md. - Due to the inclement weather, Tuesday's men's lacrosse game between Salisbury University and Washington College has been moved to Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The Sea Gulls and Shoremen will wait an extra day between taking the field for the annual contest with the Charles B. Clark Cup on the line at Sea Gull Stadium.

The contest will be a matchup of two of the top teams in the nation as both squads are ranked in the top 10 and both enter the game undefeated.

Md. House Of Delegates Passes Rape Kit Expansion Bill

The Maryland House of Delegates Monday unanimously passed a bill that would ease the burden rape victims face to complete a forensic examination that would hold up in court against purported attackers.

The bill passed 135-0.

The bill corrects a hurdle in current Maryland law that stipulates victims of rape can only obtain forensic examinations at specific hospitals, administered by specific nurses (DATABASE). Failure to complete a certified forensic examination could hinder a victim's chances of prosecuting their attacker. Del. Ariana Kelly’s bill would make rape kit examinations available at all Maryland hospitals with emergency rooms.

SUSPECT IN CUSTODY AFTER ST. MARY’S CO. ATTEMPTED MURDER-SUICIDE

(LEONARDTOWN, MD) – A woman is being treated at a trauma center and her boyfriend is under guard by state troopers while he is hospitalized after an apparent attempted murder-suicide last night in St. Mary’s County.

James M. Young, 32, of the 22000-block of Washington St., Leonardtown, Md., is being guarded by troopers at the Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. Charges against him are pending.

The victim is identified as Lashawn M. Hurley, 34, of the same address. She is being treated for an apparent stab wound at the Prince George’s Hospital Center.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m. yesterday, Maryland State Police at the Leonardtown Barrack received a 911 call for a reported stabbing at an apartment in the 22000-block of Washington St., Leonardtown, Md. When troopers arrived, they were met by Young and Hurley, who were coming down the stairs to the apartment. Hurley was in obvious pain and told troopers Young had stabbed her and the knife was still in her back. Troopers saw what appeared to be the blade portion of a knife protruding from the victim’s back. Young told troopers he had ingested an unknown amount of pills in an apparent suicide attempt.

China, Russia, Brazil, India and other UN members have long wanted to share control.

U.S. to relinquish remaining control over the Internet

U.S. officials announced plans Friday to relinquish federal government control over the administration of the Internet, a move that pleased international critics but alarmed some business leaders and others who rely on the smooth functioning of the Web.

Pressure to let go of the final vestiges of U.S. authority over the system of Web addresses and domain names that organize the Internet has been building for more than a decade and was supercharged by the backlash last year to revelations about National Security Agency surveillance.

The change would end the long-running contract between the Commerce Department and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a California-based nonprofit group. That contract is set to expire next year but could be extended if the transition plan is not complete.

1) Healthcare "Control healthcare & you control the people."

2) Poverty “Increase the Poverty level as high as possible." Poor people are easier to control & will not fight back if you're providing everything for them to live.

3) Debt “Increase the national debt to an unsustainable level." That way you're able to increase taxes, & this will produce more poverty.

4) Gun Control “Remove the ability to defend themselves from the Government." That way you're able to create a police state - total local control.

5) Welfare “Take control of every aspect of their lives" (Food, Livestock, Housing, & Income).

6) Education “Take control of what people read & listen to take control of what children learn in school."

7) Religion “Remove faith in God from the Government & school."

8) Class Warfare “Divide the people into the wealthy against the poor. Racially divide." This will cause more discontent & it will be easier to tax the wealthy (with full support of the voting poor).

BATON ROUGE, La. — Rep. Bill Cassidy, a Louisiana liver doctor who could determine control of the Senate, has crafted a two-step prescription for helping the GOP retake the upper chamber.

First, Cassidy said at a series of events here, Republicans cannot simply treat the midterms as a referendum on Obamacare -- even as his opponent, Sen. Mary Landrieu, and other Democrats scramble to distance themselves from the rocky rollout of the president's signature legislative initiative.

Is The Deep State Fracturing Into Disunity?

I recently discussed the Deep State and "throwing Wall Street under the bus" with my friend and colleague Jim Kunstler.

When we speak of The Powers That Be or the Deep State, this ruling Elite is generally assumed to be monolithic: of one mind, so to speak, unified in worldview, strategy and goals.

In my view, this is an over-simplification of a constantly shifting battleground of paradigms and political power between a number of factions and alliances within the Deep State. Disagreements are not publicized, of course, but they become apparent years or decades after the conflict was resolved, usually by one faction winning the hearts and minds of decision-makers or consolidating the Deep State's group-think around their worldview and strategy.

History suggests that this low-intensity conflict within the ruling Elite is generally a healthy characteristic of leadership in good times. As times grow more troubled, however, the unity of the ruling Elite fractures into irreconcilable political disunity, which becomes a proximate cause of the dissolution of the Empire if it continues.
