Ben Carson Bolsters Conservative Activists: ‘Don’t Let The Left Shut You Up!’

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Speaking in low and steady tones and pacing for applause, Dr. Ben Carson on Saturday encouraged conservative activists to get involved in their local elections and to not cower in the face of heated criticism.

“Don’t let the left shut you up!” he said, prompting applause from the audience.

Carson told attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference held just outside Washington, D.C. this year, that Americans with common sense have been “beaten into submission” by the left and the liberal media.

“Stop being intimidated,” he said, pleading with his audience.

Contractor Cleans Out Foreclosed House, Finds Deceased Owner

If you suddenly disappeared, who would notice that you were gone? The neighbors of one woman in Pontiac, Michigan hadn’t seen her in years. She traveled a lot for work–maybe she was working offsite for an extended period, or she had moved away and simply not sold her house yet. No, she was home the whole time. In her Jeep. Dead.

“Haven’t I read this story already?” you might be saying. You’re probably thinking of when more or less the same thing happened a few years ago, in Florida. In this case in Michigan, all we know so far is that the deceased was from Germany, and had moved to Detroit to work in the auto industry. (Based on her owning a Jeep, we’re going to guess that she might have worked for Chrysler.)

Ocean City Unveils Online Permit, License Services

OCEAN CITY – The city is looking to become more user-friendly for local contractors and business owners by offering online permitting and licensing starting this week.

Ocean City is continuing to expand the online services offered to its citizens by allowing contractors and business owners the opportunity to apply for building permits, such as plumbing, electrical and mechanical and business or rental licenses online and without a trip to City Hall. The online service went live on Monday and is available by visiting the town’s website.

“Online permitting is what a lot of communities are going towards. It is a good way to provide a service, from building permits to business licenses,” Ocean City Planning and Community Development Director Matt Margotta said. “These are things where people have to come downtown, fill out a form, wait in line, and turn it in only to have someone quickly look at it or just accept it right there, take a fee and send them on their way, and they will receive a response in the mail. … this online process takes all of that out.”

Man Arrested At Airport Security: Wait, You Can’t Bring Guns In Your Carry-On?

There are some things you can see often without really seeing it, ya know? Like the plethora of signs at any airport anywhere telling you not to bring weapons like guns, knives or throwing stars on the plane. Maybe one guy just saw those too often — or not enough — as he reportedly didn’t know you can’t bring a handgun through airport security in your carry-on.

Yes, traveling with a gun you have a license for is just fine — if you check it, unloaded, in your luggage and declare it beforehand.

Plunging Mall Traffic - Hurting Restaurants / Stores

Shopping malls are slowly turning into ghost towns, and that's taking a toll on the stores and restaurants inside of them.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in the mall food court. Several fast-food chains that were once a primary source of sustenance for bored teens are crumbling, unable to stay in business as shoppers spend their money elsewhere.

The latest victim is Sbarro, the pizza and pasta chain that was a staple at mall food courts. The company could file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as early as next week, The Wall Street Journal reported late Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Muslim Gang Seizes Christian Man And Thrusts Crucifix Into His Heart

A Muslim gang in Syria seized a young Christian man, and as soon as they spotted his Crucifix, they violently seized him, decapitated him, and then took his Crucifix and thrusted it into his heart.

Here is the heart wrenching video of the victim’s mother, recalling the deplorable and sadistic murder of her beloved son (our contact from Syria did the translation):

Md. Could Become 1st State To Ban Energy Drinks To Minors

Lethal liquid. That’s what some people are calling energy drinks like Monster. The family of one Maryland teen blames the beverage for her death.

Monique Griego has more on how they’re now asking Maryland lawmakers to ban certain people from buying them.

The proposed bill would ban minors from buying any kind of energy drink. If passed, Maryland would become the first state in the nation to do so.

An easy way to get a quick boost, or a death trap too dangerous for kids to consume?

SAUERBREY: Taxing Marylanders Until They Flee

Maryland, one of the bluest of blue states, is the poster child demonstrating that taxing the rich fails to balance the state budget.

Yet Democrats, who have complete monopoly control on all branches of state government, continue to think that doing the same thing over and over will lead to a different result.

Because of its proximity to Washington, D.C., Maryland is one of the wealthiest states in America. Still, it is plagued by fiscal woes. In a vain attempt to eliminate Maryland’s structural deficit, the administration of Gov. Martin O'Malley and Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown has raised taxes, tolls and fees more than 80 times since 2007, while increasing overall government spending by $9.6 billion, or 32 percent, over the same period.

Only Americans Fear Obama

Once Barack Obama warned Putin to stand down in the Crimea, its occupation by Russian troops was assured. As Syria showed the world recently, and the Ukraine shows today, Barack Obama needs to learn how toshut his mouth. Yet, who knew when he said, “there will be costs,” we would be the ones to pay?

To paraphrase Lincoln, it is better to shut up and be thought weak than to open your mouth and prove it. Someone should tell Barry. Every time his mouth writes a check his butt won’t cash, he weakens America and makes the world a much more dangerous place for everyone. Does anyone really think that if the Chinese attack Japan over the Senkaku Islands, Obama, even though treaty-bound, will come to their aid? If the Iranians declare they have a nuclear weapon, will Obama do one damn thing?

Putin does not respect Obama -- he views him as weak and incompetent, ill suited for the world stage and the big game. He took the measure of Obama in 2009, when Barry gave up his only bargaining chip, missile defense systems about to be deployed in Poland and the Czech Republic, before negotiations on cutting nuclear arsenals even began. The Russians were playing chess and Barry was playing with himself.

School Board Relaxes Punishment Policies

More than 42,000 Maryland students spent time out of school for suspensions or expulsions in the 2012-2013 school year.

In an effort to overhaul longstanding and severe discipline policies, the Maryland state school board passed new regulations this year to relax its zero-tolerance policies.

The new guidelines allow school administrators to consider each infraction separately, said Dr. Jerry Wilson, superintendent for Worcester County Public Schools.

“This helps to ensure that a consequence reflects the specific infraction rather than a one-size-fits-all approach,” Wilson said.

Ex-Black Panther Freed 4 Decades After Cop Killing

A former leader of the Black Panthers has been released from prison more than four decades after being convicted of killing a Baltimore police officer.

Sixty-seven-year-old Marshall "Eddie" Conway was freed from the prison in Jessup on Tuesday. It came after state prosecutors agreed to change his life sentence to time served and probation.

Conway is one of dozens of inmates who have been released after Maryland's Court of Appeals ruled in 2012 that judges had given improper instructions to juries before 1980.

Conway was convicted in 1971 of fatally shooting 35-year-old Donald Sager as Sager and another officer sat in a marked patrol car in April 1970.

He has always denied any participation in the attack.

HOUSE PASSES ESTATE TAX EXEMPTION INCREASE

With a bipartisan vote of 120 to 13, the Maryland House of Delegates passed a bill Friday to raise the estate tax exemption threshold over the next five years.

Delegate Heather Mizeur, D-Montgomery, was the only lawmaker who spoke in opposition of the legislation Friday before the final House before the vote was taken.

“It’s conservative propaganda to suggest that we have to pass this legislation in order to hold onto millionaires in Maryland,” said Mizeur, who is running for governor. “The only result of this bill will be to exacerbate the income inequality gap that exists in our state. This is the exact opposite of progress.”

Two Delegates, Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio, R-Talbot, and Herb McMillan, R-Anne Arundel, followed Mizeur to speak in favor of the bill.

Vladimir Putin Targets America’s Achilles Heel: “He’s Going To Destroy The Stock Markets”

In 2012 an elite insider claimed that on or around March 4, 2014 the doomsday clock would ring, the effect of which would be a complete collapse of the U.S. economy. How former Vice Presidential adviser Grady Means came to this conclusion with a specific target date may forever remain clouded in secrecy. But given the state of current affairs around the world today, one can’t help but consider that maybe Grady Means was on to something. With the fight over political and resource control in the Ukraine heating up, is it possible the Means was referring to this very set of circumstances?

We know the U.S. economy is literally on the brink of a collapse. All we need now is a triggering mechanism.

Md. Seeks To Ease Pain Of winter Heating Bills

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland utility regulators say the high cost of heating homes and businesses during this long, cold winter may put more customers at risk of being shut off after March 31.

The Public Service Commission is asking utility companies at a legislative-style hearing Friday in Baltimore to explain their policies and procedures for terminating service to customers who haven't paid their bills on time.

The commission says it also wants to know the number of current and projected customers in arrears.

Maryland utilities are prohibited from disconnecting customers from November through March.

The measure repeals a requirement that needles be exchanged on a one-for-one basis. It would limit new needles to 10 for one used one.

Other cities have expanded such programs to cut down on diseases like AIDS that spread by intravenous drug use.

U.S. House Advances Bill Putting Curbs On EPA Power Plant Rules

(Reuters) - A bill to curb the ability of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to set limits on carbon emissions from power plants cleared a hurdle in the House of Representatives on Thursday but faces bleak prospects of becoming law.

The Republican-controlled House passed the bill by a 229-183 vote but the Senate, in which Democrats hold a majority, has no timetable to consider the legislation. President Barack Obama already has threatened to veto the bill.

The legislation was the latest in a series of strong messages sent by lawmakers from large coal producing states to Obama, as his administration aims to cement a legacy of combating climate change by cracking down on carbon emissions.

The Four Harsh Truths That Everyone In My Generation Needs To Accept

I’m a young person.

A ‘young adult,’ supposedly. I’m married with two kids and back problems, so I don’t necessarily feel like it all the time, but I do fall into that coveted 18-34 demographic.

As a young person, I take special note of all the bad press we tend to get. I’m sure you heard about the 18-year-old woman (not kid, not child, not teenager — woman) who sued her parents to force them to pay for her college tuition. She lost the first round in court, but you can bet that we haven’t read the last of this sordid tale.

I’m sure you’ve also heard about the various studies and reports, released every few months it seems, confirming and reconfirming and confirming again that people in my generation are very reluctant to move out of mom and dad’s house. A report this past summer found that over 21 million  millennials are still sharing a mailing address with their parents.

The Next Shoe To Drop On Your Retirement Account

President Obama released his 2015 budget proposal this week… and as expected, it contained even more language about his MyRA initiative.

As we’ve discussed so many times in the past, IRAs are an irresistible kitty for such a bankrupt government.

The US government itself estimates that over $5 trillion is tucked away in American retirement accounts.

They need that money. Your money.

Think about it– the Chinese are starting to dump their US Treasuries in record numbers. The Social Security trust fund is also on track to start dumping Treasuries in order to pay out record numbers of retirees.

The US government is struggling to come up with new funding sources… and retirement accounts are by far the easiest target.

Why? Because the majority of retirement accounts at trapped at big Wall Street banks, which are all de facto agents of the government. All the Treasury Department has to do is make a phone call.

Trump: Real Unemployment Rate 21, 22 Percent

“When You Give Up Looking For A Job, It’s Like They Consider You Employed…..It’s Amazing.”

Donald Trump is an eternal favorite among the political junkies who comprise much of the audience at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference.

By contrast to the long line of politicians he follows on the dais, the real-estate magnate seems refreshingly candid. The audience here laughs at his jokes and encourages his bombast.

“I saw Tiger Woods this morning, Ernie Els, and Phil Mickelson, and I told them I’m going to CPAC,” he said as he took the podium on Thursday. The crowd cheered. He mentioned that he’d been to Moscow recently, because he owns the Miss Universe Pageant, of course, and picked up a trick or two for dealing with the country’s dictator, Vladimir Putin, who has caused so many problems for President Obama in recent weeks.

“We have so many problems with so little leadership,” Trump said ruefully.

US Machinations In The Ukraine

What happens when the United States government participates meaningfully in toppling foreign governments in the name of spreading democracy? That behavior usually results in unintended consequences and often produces disasters.

When the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, initially to search for weapons of mass destruction that we now know the Bush administration knew did not exist there, and eventually for regime change, the U.S. succeeded in changing profoundly the Iraqi government. But in the process, we lost 4,500 American troops, suffered 45,000 substantial injuries, borrowed and spent and have not paid back more than $2 trillion, caused the deaths of 650,000 Iraqis, displaced 2.5 million Iraqis, and unleashed into Iraq our public enemy, al-Qaida. Al-Qaida was not in Iraq before we invaded. Today, it controls one-third of that now unstable country.

Guilty Plea In Fatal 113 Crash; No Jail Time For Motorist

SNOW HILL — A Delmar man this week pleaded guilty to criminally negligent manslaughter by motor vehicle in a fatal 2012 accident on Routes 113 and was sentenced to one year in jail, which was then suspended in favor of probation and a fine.

Gerald Dean Smith, now 44, pleaded guilty on Wednesday in Worcester County Circuit Court to criminally negligent manslaughter for the December 2012 accident at Routes 113 and 12 in Snow Hill that claimed the life of Iva Jane Justice, 65, of Snow Hill. Smith was sentenced to one year in jail, which Judge Richard Bloxom suspended in favor of probation for three years, a $500 fine and 100 hours of community service.

Shortly before 3 p.m. on Dec. 7, 2012, Maryland State Police troopers responded to a fatal collision at the intersection of Routes 113 and 12. The investigation revealed a 2005 Chevy flatbed truck belonging to Lowe’s and operated by Smith was heading south on Route 12. Smith attempted to cross the intersection at Route 113 without slowing or stopping and reportedly T-boned the 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Justice. Justice was pronounced dead at the scene, while Smith was transported to PRMC for treatment.

Private Property Rights Under Attack By Comprehensive Land Use

Humans have always desired to own a piece of land that could be passed on to their heirs. Once they acquired property for homestead or farming, men labored on their land under the assumption that it was theirs to keep in perpetuity.

If you ask the government, land belongs to the proprietor as long as the required taxes are paid in full each year and the government does not confiscate the property through eminent domain or deem it environmentally endangered and in need of protection. If you ask progressives, land belongs equally to everyone and nobody should be allowed to “own” anything, it should be communal property.

The painful lesson in communal property (communism) at Jamestown has been forgotten or never learned. When people worked the land together, some worked harder and some were lazier, yet everyone ate the same. The entire settlement almost starved to death. The following year, when the communal property was divided into individual parcels, everyone prospered.

Humans understood then that individual freedom and cooperation on smaller scale are much more successful than domination by a few in an exclusively government-run society.

Senate Committee Votes To Use Pension Savings To Plug Budget Holes

More money once planned to reinvest in Maryland's state employee pension system is being tapped to fill a state budget hole.

A Senate budget panel made the decision Friday.

Under pension reform three years ago, Maryland was to pay $300 million above its required pension payment each year to move gradually to fully funding the pension system. Gov. Martin O'Malley proposed capping the payment at $200 million this year to help fill a budget gap.

Now, with a $238 million downward revision in state revenues creating a bigger hole, senators have decided to make only a $100 million payment for fiscal year 2014 and fiscal year 2015. That frees up money the remaining $200-million to ease budget pressures.

HISTORICAL COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER 3-8-14

The Grocery Store

How many of us remember the corner grocery store? It seems like there was one on every corner when I was growing up. In 1899 there were 28 grocery stores listed in the Salisbury City Directory. This figure grew to the following numbers: by 1907 – 35, by 1920 – 37, by 1940 – 62 and finally in 1961 their numbers had grown to 92. There were many things about the corner grocery store that you cannot find today. Every local grocer knew his clientele and would often let them “slide” until they could pay. I guess this was the forerunner of the modern credit card, even though much less formalized. It’s true that the world has grown bigger and everything in it has grown proportionately larger as a result.

When a local businessman would open a grocery store at the turn of the 20th century, he depended on the attractiveness of his products to sell themselves. The old lithograph labels that went on cans of fruits and vegetables were works of art in themselves, although a lot of artistic license was taken as to the origin of the product. I have seen a label from Willing’s canned tomatoes in Nanticoke with a nature scene on it with mountains in the background. Some were embossed, and many had pictures that were suitable for framing. Collecting these labels has become a hobby in itself.

I remember Mom giving me two quarters to go across Church and Truitt Streets and get her a loaf of bread and a quart of milk from Mr. Ford’s store. In those days, Church Street was Rt. 50 and the main road to Ocean City. He had two gas pumps out front at one time but took them out for fear that one of the many accidents on that corner would lead to disastrous results one day. I used to like to go because of the penny candy, which every store had. I’m sure everyone remembers their favorite selection. And remembers when soft drink bottles were able to be redeemed for two cents. The drink itself was only a nickel so three bottles would get you a drink and a piece of penny candy.

When I was going to St. Francis, I remember Rayne’s on Smith St. I used to buy baseball cards there. I would wait until I saw a card I didn’t have and knew that Mrs. Rayne had received a new order. I would then go over there and buy a box from the new order, knowing that a new series was out. In a box I would usually get about 117 cards out of 125 in the series and enough “doubles” to trade for the ones I didn’t get. While some kids were spending a fortune, I would only have to spend $1.20 to get the whole series. Looking back, that was a great plan. I kept those cards until they went so high in the late 1980’s, the money looked better than the cards.

I had two great aunts that had a store known to many a Salisbury youth way back when. It was called Dae & Dodie’s and was on Walnut Street. Dae was Daisy McConnell and Dodie was Dora Disharoon. They were my grandfather’s sisters, but they were born after he ran away from home so he never was raised with them. The building is gone now and only memories exist. My grandparents lived around the corner on Gay St., but since they moved when I was five, I didn’t frequent Dae & Dodie’s. I remember going in there once and it was magical. Naturally, they wanted to give their nephew whatever he wanted and the place was full of candy. I think it also had wooden floors and they creaked with certain sounds that seem to make the place come alive. They had a certain warmth and nostalgia that you will never find in the antiseptic floors in the modern supermarket.

Housing Authority Baltimore City - Layoffs Poss.

Planned privatization of public housing complexes has city workers and their union worried

Hundreds of employees at the Housing Authority of Baltimore City (HABC) could be laid off as the agency moves toward selling nearly two dozen public housing complexes to private developers, said a source close to the union that represents the workers.

Maintenance workers for the agency are the primary category of employee threatened with losing their jobs, said Tessa Hill-Aston, president of the Baltimore City NAACP. Hill-Aston said she has been meeting with officials of the local AFSCME units that represent the workers in an attempt to understand the budding crisis.

“We are trying to see what we can do to try not to have them laid off,” Hill-Aston said in an interview with The Brew. “A lot of those people have been there a long time. They have mortgages, children in college, loans. They are working class people and they work around the clock.”

Georgia House Votes To Nullify Obamacare

Late Monday evening, the Georgia State House of Representatives passed HB707, which bans the state participating in significant portions of the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. The vote was 115-59.

Representative Jason Spencer introduced HB707, The Georgia Health Care Freedom and ACA Noncompliance Act. Spencer also had five co-sponsors to the bill.
According to Tenth Amendment Center executive director Michael Boldin, "While Georgia can't fully stop Obamacare on its own, it can serve as a pretty major roadblock to implementation," he said. "And as more states get on board with this strategy, it will pull the rug out from under it. Bills like this will end Obamacare from the bottom up."

HB707 specifically provides the following bans:

Is Lyme The Next AIDS?

For years, Lyme's disease was thought to be transmitted by a tick bite exclusively. But new research is unveiling something quite troubling about this baffling condition: Lyme disease may be transmitted sexually as well.

Standing At Attention And No One To Salute At

An Army general accused of sexually assaulting a junior officer will plead guilty to three of four charges against him. Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair maintains innocence on the most serious charge of forced sex. His accuser is a female captain with whom he had an affair. Adultery is a crime in the military. His defense lawyers say his accuser lied under oath about her handling of an iPhone containing photos and text messages. Sinclair's lawyer says the general will plead guilty to having improper relationships with two other female Army officers and to committing adultery. He'll admit violating orders by possessing pornography in Afghanistan. And he'll admit to conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman. Sinclair is the former deputy commander of the 82nd Airborne. He faces life in prison if convicted of the remaining sexual assault charges.
