Who Are The Losers In The \\\'Duck Dynasty\\\' Flap?

Now that A&E executives have surrendered to the will of hundreds of thousands of "Duck Dynasty" fans and welcomed Phil Robertson back to the show nearly 10 days after creating a firestorm when they suspended him for expressing views about sexuality that are shared by many other conservative Christians, it's time to see who the winners and losers are.

The winners: Robertson and his family. They held fast to their values and learned how deep their fan base really is. The family's admission of regret about hisstatements to GQ was no surrender, given that his comments were never about hate as opponents had insinuated.

The losers: A&E executives, of course, who knew all along that the Robertson family members were conservative Christians, yet did the world's worst imitation of Claude Rains in "Casablanca" when gay rights groups complained.

It's The Replublicans Fault People Are Not Signing Up For Obamacare

Dem Rep: No one's signing up for ObamaCare, because Republicans have convinced them it's been repealed
Congratulations, Democrats.  This is a person you actually elected.
Since October, Democrats have been desperate to answer one burning question: "Why aren't people signing up for ObamaCare?"
Sure, the website was bad, but the numbers are just so dismal. Since it's impossible that people don't absolutely love this law, there has to be something else going on.  Some mysterious factor is driving people away from the Affordable Care Act.
Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D., D.C.) has found the answer.  To put it bluntly, people are stupid. That's what she's come up with.  They're so dumb, that crafty Republicans have been able to convince them that the law no longer exists.

Female Marines Can’t Complete Physical Training Tests, But Will Be Sent To The Front Lines Regardless

I have a confession to make: I’m not against women serving on the front lines. There are plenty of women who can kick butt, BUT they have to be able to pass the physical training tests. No special treatment, no dumbing down of standards; if they want to be like the men serving on the front lines, they’re going to have to pass the same physical training requirements – end of story. Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Tom Bowman at NPR reported on December 29:

Starting Jan. 1, every woman in the Marines Corps was supposed to meet a new physical standard by performing three pullups. But that has been put off.

The Marine Corps announced it quietly. There was no news conference — just a notice on its social media sites and an item on its own TV show, “The Corps Report.”

Lance Cpl. Ally Beiswanger explained that the pullup test had been put off until sometime next year to gather more data and “ensure all female Marines are given the best opportunity to succeed.”

The Key To New Year’s Resolutions

There’s a reason why only 8 percent of New Year’s resolutions are kept: Too many of us make resolutions that lack resolve.

“Resolve” is a powerful world. According to one dictionary, it means “to solve a problem, or to find a satisfactory way of dealing with a disagreement.”

Bill Gates elaborated on the concept in his 2007 commencement address at Harvard. He said the first order of business in resolving a problem is seeing it. Then all you need to do is cut through complexity, so you may solve it.

Gates made it sound easier than it is, of course. With virtually all large problems, simplifying complexity requires a great deal of work – a great deal of resolve.

Solving problems in the private sector is really no different than solving them in the public sector, or any sector, really – if your interest is in actually getting to the root cause of the challenge, so you may see and understand it, and then in coming up with a solution that produces real results.

Sen. Mike Lee Files Bill To Protect Churches From Performing Same-Sex Marriages

A Republican senator is hoping to alleviate a dilemma that the rising tide ofsame-sex marriages could create for places of worship. As such unions become more acceptable, U.S. Sen. Mike Lee of Utah is afraid the day may come when churches are forced to perform gay marriages or lose their tax-exempt status.

“What we’re talking about here is the freedom of religious belief, the freedom of a church, for example, to adhere to its own religious doctrine so that it cannot be discriminated against by the government,” he told Newsmax, which also reported:

Lee said the federal government’s failure to protect religious liberty — citing Obamacare mandates for contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs — was a key motivation for him to introduce the “Marriage and Religious Freedom Act,” which protects clergy from being punished if they refuse to perform gay marriages.

Maine Struggles to Cut Off Welfare for Somali Migrants

Somalis have made Somalia a very pleasant place to live. Between the Muslim militias shooting at each other and the amateur hyena psychiatry sessions, it’s perfect. That’s why most Somalis are getting the hell out of there and moving to other countries that they can remake into Somalia.

There are Little Mogadishus all across America, but few places have been hit as hard by Somali Muslim migrants as Maine whose generous benefits system is struggling to cope with the Somali settlers.

Lewiston Mayor Robert E. MacDonald has written sharply about the Somali welfare invasion and its impact on Maine natives.

The Pathetic Irrelevance Of Jesse Jackson

In a desperate attempt to stay relevant, Jesse Jackson has sunk the civil rights movement he represents to the absolute bottom of self-parody by denouncing Phil Robertson as “more offensive” than the bus driver who asked Rosa Parks to give up her seat.

Once the civil rights movement did good in America by erasing vestigial remnants of the long-ago days of slavery. Despite his communist associations and personal flaws, Martin Luther King Jr.’s basic message was positive: We would be much better off if our society judged us by the content of our character, as he advocated.

However, we are increasingly less judged by our character than our ethnicity, thanks to a racial hierarchy based on phony victimhood that has been imposed on us in part by demagogues who hijacked the civil rights movement.

Maryland Towns Have Their Own New Year’s Eve Traditions

While Times Square has its illuminated ball that drops at midnight, not to be outdone, some towns across Maryland have their own New Year’s Eve traditions. We’re talking ducks and crabs and muskrats and even keys!

In Frederick, it's the second annual Key drop. Get it? Francis Scott Key.

Sponsored by the Civitan Club of Frederick., they lower a giant lighted key from the top of the Carroll Creek suspension bridge at midnight.

Marshall P. Muskrat is the star of the New Year’s Eve celebration in Downtown Princess Anne. The top and tails clad muskrat makes the “dive” at the stroke of midnight in front of the historic Washington Hotel on Somerset Avenue. Hence the title the Midnight Muskrat Dive!

Biden Secures $7 Million For Delaware Borrowers

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden hasannounced that Ocwen Financial Corporation and its subsidiary, Ocwen Loan Servicing, will provide $7 million to Delaware borrowers in the latest effort by his office to hold accountable those responsible for the mortgage foreclosure crisis. Today’s announcement with the nation’s fourth largest mortgage servicer is part of a national $2.1 billion national settlement with 49 states and the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau which holds Ocwen accountable for past mortgage servicing and foreclosure abuses, provides relief to homeowners, and stops future fraud and abuse.

“Our financial system only works when everyone follows the rules, and this settlement holds a financial institution accountable for breaking the rules and inflicting harm on homeowners and the economy,” Biden said. “The financial relief that my office has secured for Delawareans is a direct result of our ongoing investigations into the conduct that led to the economic crisis and our continued commitment to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.”

No NSA Poster Child: The Real Story Of 9/11 Hijacker Khalid al-Mihdhar

Since whistleblower Edward Snowden exposed the incredible scope of the government’s domestic spying programs, two different narratives are moving forward in Congress.

One, expressed most recently by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., in the Wall Street Journal, argues that the government’s collection of all Americans’ calling data “is necessary and must be preserved if we are to prevent terrorist attacks.”

The other, offered by Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Ohio, and others is that the Justice Department, National Security Agency and FBI have repeatedly misled members of Congress and the public about the nature of their spying programs, as well as their effectiveness, and they need to be reined in to protect Americans’ rights.

Unfortunately for Feinstein, a simple review of the facts she marshals to support her position reveals a total reliance on dubious intelligence community statements that have already been widely debunked. The actual facts make clear that the NSA doesn’t need an enormous database of everyone’s phone records to track a discrete number of terrorists -- the NSA just needs to use the traditional tools it has to investigate its targets.

Feinstein’s first claim, based on recent testimony from FBI Director Robert Mueller and the NSA’s director, Gen. Keith Alexander, is that the domestic telephone data collection program would have enabled the intelligence community to prevent the 9/11 attacks by revealing that al-Qaeda operative and future 9/11 hijacker Khalid al Mihdhar was inside the United States. On June 12, 2013, Alexander told the Senate Appropriations Committee:

EMT Punished for Breaking the Rules to Save a Sick Child

A volunteer EMT was suspended for breaking the rules to help a sick child. Stephen Sawyer, 20, was the only person around when a call came in about a four-year-old having a seizure.

After making several unsuccessful calls for ambulances, Sawyer said he made the decision to drive the ambulance to save the child – violating the rule that only people age 21 or older can drive the emergency vehicle.

The Ellenville board of directors suspended Sawyer and revoked his title as an advisor from the Youth Squad. He subsequently resigned.

Shanahan Fired As Redskins Coach

Mike Shanahan was fired as coach of the Washington Redskins on Monday, one day after a season that began with great expectations ended with a 3-13 record and eight losses to close out the year.

Shanahan had a 24-40 regular-season record, plus one playoff loss, and coached them for four seasons of a five-year contract. The Redskins had losing records in three of Shanahan's four seasons.

Owner Daniel Snyder said in a statement that "Redskins fans deserve a better result. We thank Mike for his efforts on behalf of the Redskins. We will focus on what it takes to build a winning team, and my pledge to this organization and to this community is to continue to commit the resources and talent necessary to put this team back in the playoffs."

Concealed Carry Means Fewer Murders, Says New Study

Quinnipiac University economist Mark Gius has published a new study, "An examination of the effects of concealed weapons laws and assault weapons bans on state-level murder rates," in the journal Applied Economics Letters. From the abstract:

The purpose of the present study is to determine the effects of state-level assault weapons bans and concealed weapons laws on state-level murder rates. Using data for the period 1980 to 2009 and controlling for state and year fixed effects, the results of the present study suggest that states with restrictions on the carrying of concealed weapons had higher gun-related murder rates than other states. It was also found that assault weapons bans did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level. These results suggest that restrictive concealed weapons laws may cause an increase in gun-related murders at the state level. The results of this study are consistent with some prior research in this area, most notably Lott and Mustard (1997).

Intriguing.

For more background: The most recent Reason-Rupe poll reports that 63 percent of Americans don't believe that stricter gun laws would keep weapons out of the hands of criminals.

Company Helping Fix Md. Health Exchange Linked To Firm Selling Policies

When state leaders brought in a new company to help repair their troubled health care exchange, they went to one whose owner has a lot to gain from the sales of insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act.

The Columbia-based health care technology company Optum/QSSI is a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, which also owns one of the four insurers selling policies on Marylandhealthconnection.gov.

United Health Care Group spokesman Matt Stearns said Optum/QSSI operates separately from its insurance company. There is no interaction between the companies under the exchange contract, he said.

Connecticut Media Pushes Propaganda As Citizens Ignore Unconstitutional Gun Registration law

Gun registration laws exist for one reason: to identify all gun owners and firearms for future confiscation efforts. Once you register a firearm, you are giving away your rights to the government. Period. Any reasonably intelligent person knows this intuitively. As a result, less than 10-percent of citizens register their guns.

That won’t keep the Quisling media from doing everything in their power to lie about gun owners rushing out to get in compliance with a blatantly unconstitutional law, hoping to make it look like those who are failing to register are the minority, instead of the super-majority.

Here’s just one example of the anti-gun propaganda war being waged by local media and law enforcement in Connecticut:

There are only five more days until the new gun laws go into effect for our state, that means a dash to register assault weapons or high capacity magazines.

A long line of people stood outside of the Public Safety Building in Middletown all day Thursday to register firearms.

Specifically, anything the state considers an assault weapon or a high capacity magazine must be registered before Jan. 1, 2014.

“If they were trying to make them illegal, I’d have a real issue, but if they want to just know where they are, that’s fine with me,” said Charles Gillette, who was registering magazines.

“I understand why they’re doing it, but I don’t think it’s constitutional,” said Scott Boccio, who was registering guns.

The controversial law was created last year after 20 children and six adults lost their lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14.

None of the people Eyewitness News spoke with thinks this is going to reduce gun violence. They believe it’s only hurting law abiding citizens.

Breach: Man Defeats $300 Million Airport Perimeter Fence: “Substandard Security System”

Every day hundreds of thousands of travelers are subjected to long lines and intrusive screenings by the Transportation Security Administration. Under the pretext of protecting Americans from terrorists theTSA, an agency which has never actually captured a terrorist in its ten year history, has spent billions of dollars on what they claim is a necessity in today’s dangerous world.

But with all the money being spent and agovernment control grid being implemented across the entire country, a cross-dressing fence jumper somehow managed to thwart a multi-million dollar impenetrable external perimeter defense system at Newark airport.

“Grey-Haired Brigade”

The typical U.S. household headed by a person age 65 or older has a net worth 47 times greater than a household headed by someone under 35, according to an analysis of census data released Monday. If all of us “old farts” have all of the money, then let us try to elect someone who might be near honest and not be after feathering their own nests.

They like to refer to us as senior citizens, old fogies, geezers, and in some cases dinosaurs. Some of us are “Baby Boomers” getting ready to retire. Others have been retired for some time. We walk a little slower these days and our eyes and hearing are not what they once were. We have worked hard, raised our children, worshiped our God and grown old together. Yes, we are the ones some refer to as being over the hill, and that is probably true. But before writing us off completely, there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration.

In school we studied English, history, math, and science which enabled us to lead America into the technological age. Most of us remember what outhouses were, many of us with firsthand experience.

We remember the days of telephone party-lines, 25-cent gasoline, and milk and ice being delivered to our homes. For those of you who don’t know what an icebox is, today they are electric and referred to as refrigerators. A few even remember when cars were started with a crank. Yes, we lived those days.

We are probably considered old fashioned and out-dated by many. But there are a few things you need to remember before completely writing us off. We won World War II, fought in Korea and Viet Nam. We can quote The Pledge of Allegiance, and know where to place our hand while doing so. We wore the uniform of our country with pride and lost many friends on the battlefield. We didn’t fight for the Socialist States of America ; we fought for the “Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.” We wore different uniforms but carried the same flag. We know the words to the Star Spangled Banner, America , and America the Beautiful by heart, and you may even see some tears running down our cheeks as we sing. We have lived what many of you have only read in history books and we feel no obligation to apologize to anyone for America.

Yes, we are old and slow these days but rest assured, we have at least one good fight left in us. We have loved this country, fought for it, and died for it, and now we are going to save it. It is our country and nobody is going to take it away from us. We took oaths to defend America against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and that is an oath we plan to keep. There are those who want to destroy this land we love but, like our founders, there is no way we are going to remain silent.

The e-mail implied Republicans would try to impeach Obama if Democrats did not take back the House.

Is Maureen Dowd Obsolete?

“Without men, civilization would last until the oil needed changing.”
—Federicius Aurelius Superomnem, 345 BC

Oh god, oh god. Death, taxes, migraine, sinus drainage, beriberi, and Maureen Dowd, the resentment columnist at The New York Times. On the Web I find her at some feminist bitch-in called “Are Men Obsolete?” She has this to say to men:

So now that women don’t need men to reproduce and refinance, the question is, will we keep you around? And the answer is, ‘You know we need you in the way we need ice cream — you’ll be more ornamental.’

I was delighted to think that I might be ornamental, no one having suggested the concept until now. I could have used it in high school. Maureen herself is beyond being ornamental, having that injection-molded look that follows the seventh face-lift, probably accomplished by the surgical use of a construction crane.\

Md. Property Values Head In Different Directions

Home values are rising in many of Washington's Maryland suburbs, but new property assessments show signs of continued trouble in southern and western Maryland and on the Eastern Shore.

Residential property values across the state are up just 1.6 percent, while commercial property values are up 16.3 percent.

The largest home-value increases are in Montgomery County (5.8 percent), Howard County (5.7 percent), Baltimore City (4.4 percent) and Prince George's County (4.2 percent).
