Md. Property Values Head In Different Directions

Home values are rising in many of Washington's Maryland suburbs, but new property assessments show signs of continued trouble in southern and western Maryland and on the Eastern Shore.

Property assessments in the mail this week to one-third of all Maryland property owners show overall values of properties, including commercial properties, have risen 4.7 percent over the last three years, according to the state's department of assessments and taxation.

Residential property values across the state are up just 1.6 percent, while commercial property values are up 16.3 percent.

The largest home-value increases are in Montgomery County (5.8 percent), Howard County (5.7 percent), Baltimore City (4.4 percent) and Prince George's County (4.2 percent).

  1. Without the beach and the medical community, the eastern shore would look like the eastern shore of Virginia. Oh yes, and all of the gov money that buys the oc and lower de condos.

  2. I live in Worcester County and just received my assessment notices for eleven different properties, mostly agricultural land but also two dwellings. The value actually declined by 5 to 7 percent!

I wish I could afford 11 different properties.

  6. Prince George's County (4.2 percent)?

Funny how the property values increased 4.2% but a previous article claimed poverty in the top 5%.

  7. Does anyone feel that the Eastern Shore is more of a representative of the nation as a whole? It take us longer to feel the impact of things here and longer to pull out. I cannot believe things are as rosy as they are having us to believe. I'm not buying it.
