PHOEBUS TO RUN FOR HOUSE OF DELEGATES FOR DISTRICT 38A

John K. Phoebus today announced his candidacy for the Maryland House of Delegates for District 38A, which represents Somerset County and part of Wicomico County. Phoebus, a Crisfield attorney, stated that he would file with the State Board of Elections this week. He will seek the Republican nomination for the House of Delegates.

Phoebus’s announcement follows Delegate D. Page Elmore’s announcement on June 19, 2010 that he will withdraw as a candidate due to health issues. Like Delegate Elmore Phoebus, has a strong interest in preserving the rights of local watermen and farmers. He intends to be their watchdog in Annapolis to ensure that they can continue to earn their livelihood on the land and the Bay. Phoebus also intends to be a strong advocate for small and family‐owned businesses on the lower Shore.

Phoebus has been encouraged to run for this position by leaders and residents of both Somerset and Wicomico Counties. “I am both humbled and honored by the faith and confidence that the citizens have placed in me by asking me to run. Both Republicans and Democrats have strongly encouraged the path that I have chosen. As a business owner and as an attorney, I will bring much‐needed business experience to Annapolis, where too many of the elected legislators are out of touch with the needs and concerns of families and small businesses.”

Phoebus, 38, is a native of Crisfield, Maryland, where he resides and maintains a law practice that serves individuals and businesses in Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester Counties on the lower shore. His litigation practice has exposed him to the problems of watermen, farmers and small businesses. “Hearing about the problems of these groups has concerned me since I started my law career. It is important for the lower Shore to have a strong voice in Annapolis to look out for the interests of its residents.” Phoebus is equally upset by the 20% sales tax increase and its effect on the families who are struggling to make ends meet. He intends to fight for the repeal of this unnecessary tax.

Phoebus graduated from Crisfield High School in 1990 and received his Bachelor’s degree from Washington College in Chestertown in 1994. He graduated from the Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1997. Following law school he resided in Wicomico County for six years and began his professional career with the Salisbury litigation firm of Anthenelli & Otway. He opened his Crisfield practice in 2001.

Phoebus is president of the Crisfield Area Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Wor‐Wic Community College Foundation, and serves on the board of directors of Coastal Hospice. He is a past member of the Somerset County Economic Development Commission and the board of directors of Hudson Health Services. In 2003 Governor Robert L.
Ehrlich, Jr. appointed him to serve on the Governor’s Commission to Study the Structure and Efficiency of State Government whose mission was to streamline government agencies to improve efficiency of government services and to reduce waste.

Politically, Phoebus has served on the Somerset County Republican Central Committee and is a past president of the Somerset Republican Club. Presently, he is Somerset County’s director to elect Robert Ehrlich governor.

He is a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marion Station, Maryland.

Delegate Page Elmore Will Not Seek Re-Election

Delegate Page Elmore will not seek re-election due to health issues. I received the following from a friend close to Page.

"Joe,

Page announced he is withdrawing from running for his seat for this upcoming election. This is really going to make things interesting. Wonder if Cannon will try and run for that seat. I know of someone in Somerset County who will probably run."

Interesting how some are thinking just like I was. In fact, I called John earlier today to ask him if he's interested in running for that seat and he stated he would get back to me early next week with an answer.

More importantly, Page Elmore is one hell of a good man. He has served the 38A District well and we certainly wish him the very best in his retirement. Thank You Page!

Salisbury News will have some breaking news, (aside from Cannon) on Monday referencing the County Council and a Republican Candidate we will be supporting at large.

Jim Rutledge Wins Endorsement Of Baltimore County Reagan Republican Club

Rutledge Receives a Super Majority from Republican Party Membership

FOREST HILL, Maryland
- U.S. Senate Candidate Jim Rutledge was the overwhelming favorite of Baltimore County Republicans in a straw poll conducted Thursday. Rutledge received a super majority of ballots cast to gain the endorsement. Baltimore County is considered a “Bell Weather” county for candidates seeking statewide office. Jim Rutledge said, “This group reflects the heart and soul of the Republican Party in Baltimore County, and I am proud to receive their endorsement.”

The Rutledge for Senate Campaign believes this endorsement is another example of the support and momentum Jim Rutledge is garnering in his effort to reform Washington and return a conservative majority to the U.S. Senate. Rutledge stated, “The Baltimore County Republicans are well informed and very active and this result shows our campaign has mushroomed.”

Jim Rutledge continues to fight to end the out of control spending of career politicians like Barbara Mikulski. The time has come for Marylanders to unite and help return the values of Ronald Reagan to Washington.

2010 All America City Survey Question

Do You Believe Salisbury, Maryland Should Have Been
Selected

As A 2010 All America City?

One Of Salisbury's Most Wanted Apprehended

Salisbury News received multiple phone calls and e-mail messages early Friday morning referencing residents hearing helicopters and police around their neighborhoods and asked Salisbury News what was going on.

We responded to these requests by telling everyone that one of Salisbury's Most Wanted was being chased, yet we didn't know until last night that he was in fact apprehended.

The Maryland State Police Gang Unit went to serve an arrest warrant on Joseph Terry Wilson for a shooting on Smith St.

Wilson jumped out a second story window and fled on foot but was later arrested on Emerson Ave.

MSP, SPD and WCSD all worked together to bringing this fugitive to justice.

HISTORICAL COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER

Where is it?

In Wicomico County, there were many post offices in 1891. Most of these were situated in rural country stores. The owner was declared the postmaster and received a portion of the receipts generated by the mail. It is amazing to realize in this day and age that some of these post offices generated less than $30 annually for the storekeeper. This was in addition to his income from groceries, etc.

The listed post offices in 1891 were at Allen, Athel, Barren Creek Springs, Bivalve, Capitola, Collins Wharf, Fruitland, New Hope, Nanticoke, Pittsville, Parsonsburgh, Powellville, Riverton, Salisbury, Sharptown, Twilley, Tyaskin, Walston, Wanamaker, Wango, Whayland, White Haven and Whiton. The spelling is as it appears in the directory, so do not blame me. I do know that Athel is supposed to be Athol and Parsonsburgh is Parsonsburg.

By collecting post cards, I have been involved with other collectors that collect post marks from as many Maryland or Wicomico County Post Offices as possible. Since this list is from 1891, there were some Post Offices that had been discontinued by that time. There are also some larger Post Offices that had not materialized by 1891. Hebron is one that comes to mind. That is the year that the railroad came through Hebron and a post office quickly followed.

Another post office that came after 1891 and has since disappeared is the one at Roaring Point. It was probably in Harry Willing’s store. The store still remains, but is unoccupied today. Only the Campground remains where once a thriving tomato cannery and two oyster houses kept business in the area humming.

The listing for Wetipquin is under their former name of Wanamaker. Mardela was listed as Barren Creek Springs. Anyone who knows where the following are, please comment as to their location: Capitola, Collins Wharf (was it anywhere near where Collins Wharf Rd. is now?), New Hope, Twilley, Whayland and Whiton. Twilley may have been near Pittsville. There is a Whiton Rd. between Willards and Snow Hill. Also, Capitola Rd. is on the west side of the county. These may be clues as to their locations, but I am not sure. Any help?

$7-A-Gallon Gas?

President Obama has a solution to the Gulf oil spill: $7-a-gallon gas.

That's a Harvard University study's estimate of the per-gallon price of the president's global-warming agenda. And Obama made clear this week that this agenda is a part of his plan for addressing the Gulf mess.

So what does global-warming legislation have to do with the oil spill?

Good question, because such measures wouldn't do a thing to clean up the oil or fix the problems that led to the leak.

The answer can be found in Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel's now-famous words, "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste -- and what I mean by that is it's an opportunity to do things that you think you could not do before."

That sure was true of global-warming policy, and especially the cap-and-trade bill. Many observers thought the measure, introduced last year in the House by Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Edward Markey (D-Mass.), was dead: The American people didn't seem to think that the so-called global-warming crisis justified a price-hiking, job-killing, economy-crushing redesign of our energy supply amid a fragile recovery. Passing another major piece of legislation, one every bit as unpopular as ObamaCare, appeared unlikely in an election year.

So Obama and congressional proponents of cap-and-trade spent several months rebranding it -- downplaying the global-warming rationale and claiming that it was really a jobs bill (the so-called green jobs were supposed to spring from the new clean-energy economy) and an energy-independence bill (that will somehow stick it to OPEC).

Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) even reportedly declined to introduce their new cap-and-trade proposal in the Senate on Earth Day, because they wanted to de-emphasize the global-warming message. Instead, Kerry called the American Power Act "a plan that creates jobs and sets us on a course toward energy independence and economic resurgence."

But the new marketing strategy wasn't working. Few believe the green-jobs hype -- with good reason. In Spain, for example, green jobs have been an expensive bust, with each position created requiring, on average, $774,000 in government subsidies. And the logic of getting us off oil imports via a unilateral measure that punishes American coal, oil and natural gas never made any sense at all.

Now the president is repackaging cap-and-trade -- again -- as a long-term solution to the oil spill. But it's the same old agenda, a huge energy tax that will raise the cost of gasoline and electricity high enough so that we're forced to use less.

54 MILLION TAXPAYER MONEY GIVEN TO CASINO

CRONIES GET OUR MONEY

“A taxpayer-financed boost is hardly in order for the extravagant Connecticut casino that brags about having New England’s finest dining, hotel accommodations, retail shopping, live entertainment and sporting events. Three “world-class” casinos are spread over 300,000 square feet and the grounds include a lavish day spa, three major entertainment venues, 40 restaurants and a 10,000 square-foot indoor pool. It’s the last place you would imagine in need of a government handout.”

GOVERNOR O’MALLEY UNVEILS VISIT MARYLAND INTERACTIVE MAP

Map gives Maryland residents and visitors a new interactive tool to plan getaways

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Martin O’Malley hosted a presentation unveiling the Visit Maryland Interactive Map (www.visitmaryland.org/map) at the “Capital for a Day” in Silver Spring, Montgomery County. The first of its kind, the map portrays Maryland’s uniquely rich collection of natural, cultural, heritage and recreational resources in a user-friendly searchable format.

Developed by the Division of Tourism, Film and the Arts, Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) in collaboration with the Department of Planning (MDP) , the map highlights Maryland Scenic Byways, Heritage Areas, Main Streets, Arts and Entertainment Districts, Civil War Trails, agritourism businesses, state and national parks, historical and cultural museums, art venues, master artists in the Maryland Traditions program, national register historic districts, and other visitor-friendly places.

“Maryland has wisely invested in its arts, cultural, heritage, natural and recreational infrastructure through state-funded programs like Maryland Heritage Areas, Maryland Byways, Main Streets and Arts and Entertainment Districts, which significantly enhance our quality of life and attract visitors who support our booming tourism economy,” said Governor O’Malley. “Promoting these assets to the consumer, both Maryland residents and visitors, is a priority.”

Inspired by interactive maps using ARC GIS software to present Maryland information, such as Greenprint and Agprint, the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development partnered with the Maryland Department of Planning to develop a consumer-directed interactive map that promotes and markets these assets. The platform provides one place to see the various systems of assets layer and inter-relate, and provides a virtual touring map of Maryland. “Recent research shows that byways and the unique cultural and history found in Heritage Areas are positively perceived by Maryland residents and visitors, yet they need to be promoted in a way that emphasizes fun and excitement,” said DBED’s Secretary, Christian S. Johansson.

Later phases will add lodging, attractions, restaurants, wine trails, fishing spots, antique shops, water trails, Chesapeake Bay boating access points, beaches, sporting venues, regionally-recognized trails, interpretive signs along the Civil War Trails and Historic National Road, and other Maryland assets. During future phases, DBED and MDP will add features to provide interactive point-to-point drive or biking times, program logos, a save feature with printable pdf files, videos that preview travel experiences, sound clips, trip itinerary planner capability, street view, a walking radius measurement tool, search for nearby attractions within a mileage radius with the ability to highlight, zoom in and list search results, complex-queries that are interest and location based, visitor input/comment capability and analytic software.
