Four Juveniles Arrested for Graffiti

Four Juveniles Arrested for Graffiti of Several Building in the Cedar Neck Road area near Ocean View.

Location of Incident: Cedar Neck Road north of Fred Hudson Road, Ocean View

Date and Time of Occurrence: March 6, 2009, arrests occurred March 8, 2009

Resume: Troopers responded to the Pine Tree Campground for the report of graffiti on a metal sign in the campground. While the trooper was there he investigated several other incidents of graffiti complaints which occurred in the 700 block of Cedar Neck Road and again in the 200 block of Piney Point Road. The suspects used red and black paint to mark signs, buildings, a utility box and the surface of a drive-way.

The trooper began to canvas the area and located evidence from the crime. He was later able to link that evidence to a 16 year-old male from Millsboro, a 15 year-old male and a 14 year-old male both from Selbyville and a 15 year-old male from Dagsboro. The trooper also recovered the cans of spray paint used in the crime at the home of one of the juveniles.

The four were arrested on March 8, 2009 when they turned themselves in at Troop 7, Lewes. The four were charged with 5 counts of Graffiti to Real or Personal Property, 5 counts of Criminal Trespass 2nd and 1 count of Conspiracy 2nd.

The teens were brought before a Justice of the Peace Judge and released to their parents on $5,750.00 unsecured bail. The 14 year-old’s bail was set at $6,000.00. All the teens will appear in Sussex County Family Court later this month to be formally arraigned.

The property that was damaged by the teens was estimated to be in excess of $1,500.00.

Pit Bull Puppy Found In Pemberton Park

Joe

I was on my way home this morning from a walk at Pemberton Park and came upon a pit-bull puppy that was apparently lost . The dog is extremely friendly but of overpowering strength. I have canvassed the Heritage neighborhood asking dozens of people if they know the dog. I also called the Humane society but learned they are not open on Mondays. Right now the dog is in my garage but I cannot keep it. I am aware that you assist people with finding or placing lost animals. Can you help me? I need to work tomorrow but will take the dog to the Humane Society if I do not learn something by noon. Thanks for any assistance you might give. Janet Rommel 410-726-3788

GANNETT BREAKS DOWN. . . NOW INTO $1/SHARE TRADING RANGE

Gannett, Co., Inc. - (The Daily Times parent Company) - trading symbol GCI - broke major resistance again today and is now trading in the $1/Share range.

Just last week it went from $3/Share to $2/Share and now is trading at $1.91/Share.
Warren Buffett made a host appearance with Becky Quick on CNBC's Squalk Box this morning and announced that he had made several tactical blunders this past year in investing . . . no doubt not liquidating his position in GCI was one of them. He holds more than 3.3 million shares of GCI.

Surplus Truck 16 & Equipment

Memo

As previously posted Truck 16 has been sold to Pittsville VFD for the sweet low price of $5,500.00. John Pick stated this would provide an increase of $5,500.00 to the General Fund. I don't know how it's possible to realize a net gain of $5,500.00 on the sale of the truck when it has been said it cost over $5,000.00 for a brake job on old Truck 16. Tell me again Mr. Pick, how much of a net gain will the city realize from the sale of this truck or could there actually be a net loss?

Not long ago Joe mentioned the truck was to be surplussed but the equipment was not listed as surplus, however, SFD and the administration being what it is, decided they were going to sell all of the equipment with the truck for the sweet sum of $5500.00 without the approval of the council. The council approved the truck being moved into surplus NOT the equipment. Only in Salisbury can you buy a fire truck with an engine that is barely broken in (38,844 miles), fully equipped with all that you see listed in the photos above for the low, low price of FREE or nearly free after the City of Salisbury pays for the brake job.

The equipment listed by Chief David See as surplus has got to be worth at least $20,000, wouldn't you think? But hey, Chief See is retiring and he is such a nice guy, he'll go along with giving this fully equipped truck away for free to Pittsville VFD. I know those fellows over there really appreciate the generosity of SFD and SVFD. After all, Chief See says its the vollies that want all new equipment. Actually, it is the Volunteer Executive Board aka Deputy Chief Gordy and others. Has anyone asked the volunteers if this is how they want their money spent? I'd bet not. Mr. Pick, how much of an increase to the General Fund would be realized by the sale of this equipment?

The big question is, how many other fire trucks were surplussed and sold fully equipped without council approval? How many other trucks were given away, fully equipped, free of charge or nearly free?

Remember folks, Gary (Choo Choo) Comegys voted for the sale of this surplussed truck knowing the equipment was going with the truck for the low low price of FREE or nearly free.

Does Salisbury need a forensic auditor to go through the books? Theft is theft, what makes this any different than the theft of motor oil, tires and other equipment from the County? The difference is the County was able to recoup some of their equipment, we can't.

Hala McIver Named Maryland's Top 100 Women

Hala McIver is not only a close and dear friend, she is by far one of the greatest women I have ever been blessed to know. In a recent announcement/Press Release HERE and HERE put out by the Maryland Daily Record, Hala participates with 99 other fantastic women throughout the State of Maryland. The difference, Hala is one of the few entrepreneurs of the group and she's from right here in Salisbury.

Hala is the Wife of Mark McIver, (I had to throw that DT piece in there for fun) who happens to be one of the finest Gentlemen I have ever come to know and call my dear friend as well.

Hala works extremely hard and close with "Kids of Honor" and truly has a wonderful Family. Mark & Hala have four children, one of whom is serving our Country in the Armed Forces while the others are attending College here in Maryland.

Congratulations Hala McIver, we're VERY proud of you.

THE TOWN THAT CAN'T GET ANYTHING RIGHT

Hebron's "Town Manager" (heads up to Hebron: you do not have that position in your Charter and you are not a Town Manager form of government) sent out official notification that the deadline for filing to run for the three seats on Commissioners was April 4, 2009. The election is April 14, 2009.

All of a sudden, Hebron realizes that only weeks ago the Town did a Charter Amendment making the deadline 30 days from the election and the deadline for filing wasn't weeks away--IT WAS FIVE DAYS FROM NOW ON 3/14/09. Town rushes to get out a mailing telling of the short deadline for filing for office.

Hebron just cannot seem to get even simple things right......

Comegys Secures 2nd Place In Mayoral Race

According to my sources, Comegys is now ahead by some 20 votes over Caldwell, it's over for Bob. There's no chance at this point for Bob to come back so we'll have a Mayoral Race between Jim Ireton and Gary Comegys.

Hit & Run Suspect Commits Suicide At WCDC

Remember THIS ARTICLE?

Justin Mitchell, 25 yoa, committed suicide early this morning at the Detention Center. I was told the last cell check was at 11:00 PM, hours before he was found dead and everything was fine at that time.

This was the young man that was driving a pickup truck in Delaware and hit and killed Philip Jester of Delmar, DE. He then left the scene and drove back to his home in Parsonsburg while a witness followed him home. He then covered up his truck with a tarp and ran from the property when Police arrived.

Editors Note: To the Mitchell Family, we're sorry for your loss. This has to be very trying times for your Family and our thoughts and prayers go out to you. This is a devastating loss to ANY Parent.

Stimulus package, where is the stimulus part?

Last week I overheard a very interesting conversation.  Two friends discussing life.  One friend, X, comes from a very "middle class" life style.  The other, Z, is a very successful business owner.

X asked how the economy was affecting Z's business.  Z explained that on the Eastern Shore it has not been that dramatic compared to the Western Shore but they are preparing for the worse.  X stated that she is hoping her life will improve, the middle class won't be the LOST group anymore.  Most importantly she is looking forward to more affordable health insurance. She asked Z, "What is your incentive to work harder?"

Excellent question!  This is not an in depth research piece on the effects of the stimulus package but an everyday observation on where we are going on the Shore.

Z openly shared the following.  She makes a gross income of approx. $350,000 a year.  She works 7 days a week, takes all the risks (& headaches) and has 20 employees.  She provides them with full benefits.  Fast forward to today.  Her income is going to drop an additional $75,000, overnight.  *Remember anyone making over $250,000 is going to be taxed at a lot higher rate and business owners are losing a lot of tax deductions.

Can she work harder?  Why should she?  Z would have to make over $500,000 just to stay where she was.  In this economy it may not even be an option.  She could lay off a few employees, decrease benefits, work more hours, less time with her family.  For what, so she fund the new government plan?

Life would be so much easier being just an employee.  No headaches, no worries, no extra debt, a normal home life.  That is not an option, she takes her responsibilities as an employer very seriously.  She feels responsible for too many families.  She has worked too hard to just walk away.  So she has decided to work less, produce less and increase the quality of her life, emotionally.  Hopefully all employees can keep their jobs and benefits.  But they all will work less hours and bring less home.

I was surprised with her answer.  I will be honest I never gave it a lot of thought how it would effect her, it appeared she has so much it was hard to empathize.  Reality is her business success/failure does have an impact on our community.

Now she is planning to lower her income, downsize her home and lifestyle so she can spend more time with her family.  Why take anymore risks as a business owner?  Why work harder? Where are the incentives?

Our community is made up of many small businesses.  They are the backbone of our local economy.  The only large "for profit" company is Perdue.  What is going to happen?  Growth slows, new jobs will be far and few between and less dollars flowing to our economy.

A simple playground conversation gave me a much needed slap of reality.  This is only the beginning, CAPITALISM is dying.

Joe Albero Goes National On The J. T. Fox Show

I had mentioned a while back, (February 5th) that I was going to be interviewed by a Nationally Syndicated Radio Show Host, J.T. Foxx. J.T. is a very cool guy who is based out of Chicago and we did in fact do that Radio Show and I thought I'd bring it to you, right here, right now on Salisbury News.

This is the real deal where this guy gets celebrity guests on his Show like you wouldn't believe. He also has a National audience, not a 10 mile radius. So clearly I was honored and while J.T. has in fact asked me to come back on his Show, I'll simply await his call on yet another day and we can discuss the issues more. GO HERE to see more on his Show.

Enjoy the Show. It's broken down into two parts. Part two is very brief.

Sign Of The Times?

Editor,

I wanted to share a real life scenario that recently occurred locally that I think shows just how the weak economy is affecting the citizens of this country. I will leave out names of people and agencies as well as specific locations so that no one gets into any trouble.

A few weeks ago in one of the lower eastern shore counties a law enforcement officer observed a vehicle shining a light across a field and seemed to be panning the field. The officer immediatley located the vehicle, a pick-up truck, and identified two male passengers in their late twenties - early thirties. In the back of the truck were two .30-.30 rifles and a couple of male deer they had shot. Anyone who knows anything about deer (most hunters) know that most bucks have shed their antlers already and the does are well on their way to bearing young. These two were apparently very careful to leave the pregnant does alone. Upon running a check on the occupants , the officer learned that neither had ever been arrested before. The officer questioned the subjects and learned that both had recently lost their jobs. They were hunting deer illegally to put food on their tables. Hunger knows nothing of man made hunting seasons. Rather than seizing the truck, rifles, and deer, the officer let them go and told them to feed their families. It has begun. The need to revert back to the most basic forms of survival has started for some. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to soon see two or three men harvesting deer in larger quantities and handing them out to families of lesser means and no way to go out and hunt for themselves.

The law knows nothing of human hardship. It often doesn't take into consideration natures first law - the law of self preservation and preservation of your family. But this very human officer apparently knows it well. The discretion exhibited by this officer should be commended and only he knows who he is. To expose his name and agency could expose him to administrative repercussions. I fear that the current financial situation of our nation will quickly reduce many of us to this type of behavior just to survive. Will all officers recognize it for what it is and exercise discretion appropriately?

Hebron Back In The News AGAIN!

I was just informed that the Hebron Town Commission have sent postcards out to people that should arrive today. These postcards are to inform anyone wishing to run for the Council must register by THIS Friday the 13.

However, in their by laws, any individual wishing to run has up to ten days before the election to register. Could it be they are trying to prevent anyone from running so they can slam Waller Landing down every one's throat?

Kentucky Heartbreakers

Ladies & Gentlemen, I want you to take a good hard look at these animals and imagine just how special each and every one of these dogs would feel if they finally made it HOME.

Their journey through life has already been an extremely difficult one. Now you have the opportunity to come into the WHS, pick one out and take him/her home. The Humane Society opens Tuesday morning and we need to find homes for all these guys. I have seen them all face to face and there's not one of them that isn't a loving dog, seriously. Please go up there and take a look and see if one of them won't fit in with your Family.

3,000 People Want Jobs But Very Few Will Get Them

While Ocean City hosted a Job Fair and some 3,000 people attended, who's kidding whom here?

Let's get right through the BS and get to the TRUTH of the situation. Americans want a decent salary and Ocean City jobs just will not satisfy the Americans wants and needs.

instead, Ocean City will bring in several thousand Exchange Students from around the World approving Visa's where they'll accept minimum pay. If YOU want to see a REAL SCAM, some Investigative Reporter who ISN'T AFRAID of the authorities in Ocean City would go to the rooming houses and nail the crap out of the owners for allowing 7 human beings living in a studio apartment and paying $100.00 a week, (PER PERSON) to live there.

My Wife and I have had at least two of our children live in that environment and compete for those jobs and living quarters competing against those foreign students. There is under age drinking starting at 16 years old, (at least) drugs everywhere and living conditions that would make you sick to your stomach.

So while 3,000 people line up for potential jobs at the Beach and elsewhere, I feel it's like telling everyone the weather will be perfectly dry for the weekend just to draw everyone to the Shore, knowing it's going to rain anyway. Hopes may run high for some but reality will set in when only 200 of the 3,000 people applying for a job actually get hired. Also, they may get hired early on BEFORE the foreign students arrive but they'll quickly learn that if they don't do exactly what they are told they'll quickly and easily be replaced.

Ocean City needs a good Reporter. I believe the Daily Times has ONE but they may not be around come summer time. How do YOU feel about 3,000 people attending this Job Fair?

A Letter To The Editor From Mr. Jack Richards

My recent posting, re: Memories of Salisbury was not meant to stir up bad memories and I apologize to anyone if I, did in fact, cause some mental grief. Just seems a shame that what ever the topic of conversation, the subject of race, racial indiscretion, etc seems to surface. Having numerous friends in Salisbury who are of "African American" heritage ( I place that in quotes because that term is so ambiguous by nature. They are Americans as I am an American, not a German American. All people of color did not come from Africa and the vast majority never have and never will set foot in Africa. At least I have been to Germany lol) and I feel confident that these friends also have their memories from the Blue Moon, the Rex Theatre, etc where I was not necessarily welcome. With my good friend, Freddie Mitchell, I frequented the Blue Moon and was the target of racial remarks also.

As Americans who are going thru a great deal of turmoil at this time, with job losses, dreams of retirement being shattered by today's economy, monies lost, etc. it is time that we discontinue looking at color and pulling together to make a better America.

Again, I apologize to anyone that my post offended. Apparently there is going to be some new blood running the great city of Salisbury, so I hope that there will be a unification of thoughts and deeds to try to create new Memories Of Salisbury for our children and grandchildren.

Information Needed

"Dear Mr. Albero

I am writing you in hopes that you or maybe some of the readers of your blog can help. My mother has been referred to Dr. Julius Zant in Salisbury for surgery consult. I was wondering if you or your readers have had any experience with Dr. Zant. I tried looking him up on line but there was not much information on him. How is his bedside manner. Has he had any legal action against him for malpractice? Does he come highly recommended? Thanks for taking the time to read this letter. I would prefer to remain anonymous.

P.S
I read your blog everyday"

What's Changed On The West Coast In The Past 158 Years?

Do you know what happened 158 years ago this fall... back in 1850?

California became a state.
The people had no electricity.
The state had no money.
Almost everyone spoke Spanish.
There were gunfights in the streets.

So basically nothing has changed except the women had real breasts and the men didn't hold hands.

Psychiatrists vs. Bartenders

EVER SINCE I WAS A CHILD, I'VE ALWAYS HAD A FEAR OF SOMEONE UNDER MY BED AT NIGHT. SO I WENT TO A SHRINK AND TOLD HIM...'I've got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared.....I think I'm going crazy.'
'Just put yourself in my hands for one year,' said the shrink. 'Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears.'

'How much do you charge?'

'Eighty dollars per visit,' replied the doctor 'I'll sleep on it,' I said.

Six months later the doctor met me on the street. 'Why didn't you ever come to see me about those fears you were having?' he asked.

'Well, Eighty bucks a visit three times a week for a year is an awful lot of money! A bartender cured me for $10. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new pickup!'

'Is that so!' With a bit of an attitude he said, 'and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?'

'He told me to cut the legs off the bed! - Ain't nobody under there now!!!'

SCREW THOSE SHRINKS...GO HAVE A DRINK AND TALK TO YOUR BARTENDER!
