Small City Moves To Opt Out Of Calif. Sanctuary Law

The city council in Los Alamitos, Calif., voted on Monday night to exempt itself from the state's so-called sanctuary law, which limits cooperation between local enforcement and federal immigration agents authorities.

And in the process, the Orange County city of fewer than 12,000 is aligning itself with a harder line on immigration than the more liberal policies adopted elsewhere in California.

The state's sanctuary law, Senate Bill 54, took effect on Jan. 1. And with a 4-1 vote, the Los Alamitos councilapproved an ordinance to opt out of it.

The council's chambers were packed with people supporting both sides, as the Los Angeles Times reports:

"About 160 people showed up to Monday's regular City Council meeting, a monthly event that rarely draws enough people to fill the 40-seat chamber. Speakers lined up late into the evening to address elected officials, who eventually voted 4 to 1 to approve the ordinance.

'Sometimes things are bigger than we are,' said Mayor Troy D. Edgar.

Cheers erupted inside the chamber after the vote, with some shouting 'Patriots!' and 'This is a win for America!' as others waved pro-Trump flags."

Amazon may buy some Toys R US Stores

Amazon.com Inc. has looked at the possibility of expanding its retail footprint by acquiring some locations from bankrupt Toys “R” Us Inc., according to people with knowledge of the situation.

The online giant isn’t interested in maintaining the Toys “R” Us brand, but has considered using the soon-to-be-vacant spaces for its own purposes, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.

Such a move would let Amazon quickly expand its brick-and-mortar presence, coming on the heels of buying Whole Foods Market Inc. and its more than 450 locations last year. The Seattle-based company also has opened its own line of bookstores and a convenience-store concept.

BIPARTISANSHIP ALERT: Additional Tax Relief For Retirees

Governor Hogan Thanks Members Of General Assembly For Taking Action To Provide Tax Relief For Retirees

“During my campaign for governor I pledged to work hard to provide well-deserved tax relief for our state's retirees. I said that I wanted to eventually reach the point where we could do away with income taxes on all retirement income, just as many other states have done - that is still our goal. And I pledged to start heading toward that goal by repealing taxes on the pensions of our brave men and women who risked their lives for us." - Governor Larry Hogan, November 9, 2017

A Priority For Governor Hogan This Session Is To Further Reduce And Eliminate State Taxes On Retirement Income For Military, First Responders And Correctional Officers

Governor Hogan Legislation To Eliminate State Taxes On Military Retirement Income; Proposed Legislation Eliminates State Taxes On Military Retirement Income Received As A Result Of Military Service. “The first $15,000 of the military retirement income received by an individual during a taxable year beginning after December 31, 2017, but before January 1, 2019; 75% of the military retirement income received by an individual during a taxable year beginning after December 31, 2018, but before January 1, 2020; and all of the military retirement income received by an individual during a taxable year beginning after December 31, 2019.” (“Senate Bill 312,” Maryland General Assembly, 1/22/18)
Governor Hogan Introduced Similar Legislation To Eliminate State Taxes On Military Retirement Income In2015 And In 2017.

Governor Hogan’s Proposed Hometown Heroes Act Of 2018 Is Expanded To Include Correctional Officers; Proposed Legislation Eliminates State Taxes On The Retirement Income Of Correctional Officers, Fire, Rescue, And Emergency Services Personnel. “In the case of a retired correctional officer, law enforcement officer, or fire, rescue, or emergency services personnel of the United States, the State, or a political subdivision of the State, the amount included under subsection (b) (1) of this section… For any taxable year beginning after December 31, 2019, may be subtracted only if the resident is at least 50 years old on the last day of the taxable year and includes all of the retirement income that is attributable to the resident’s employment as a correctional officer, law enforcement officer, or fire, rescue, or emergency services personnel of the United States, the State, or a political subdivision of the State.” (“Senate Bill 299,”Maryland General Assembly, 1/22/18)

Sham Trade Barriers US Exporters Face

Lest American’s doubt that the playing field for international trade is fair they need look no further than our allies – the ones politicians say Trump’s new tariffs shouldn’t apply to. In a moment reminiscent of when Dorothy looked behind the curtain in the Wizard of Oz and found he was a sham, the CEO of the world’s largest automobile company Volkswagen recently uncomfortably questioned the wide disparity between import duties imposed on U.S. cars (10 percent) headed to the Europe versus what the U.S. imposes on German cars (2.5 percent). And U.S. made pickup trucks and work vans face 25 percent tariffs! Even while this unexpectedly candid German executive was stating the obvious, the European Union continued rattling its saber and threatened retaliatory duties on U.S. goods to punish America for imposing “unfair” tariffs on steel and aluminum.

The United States has been losing on international trade issues to our competitors for years. To most Americans this is obvious and undoubtedly contributed to Trump’s election. In all but a handful of sectors primarily associated with either Defense or the Internet (whether it be autos, information technology, aviation, semiconductors, electronics, etc., etc., etc.) American business, specifically manufacturing, has systematically lost market share to overseas competition and American workers are worse off in relative terms. Analysts frequently point to the obvious failures of Detroit and the dramatic decline in the domestic auto industry, but are American business executives incompetent in almost every other business sector that competes on the international playing field?

Pruitt Pushes For Transparency In Science

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt will soon end his agency’s use of “secret science” to craft regulations.

“We need to make sure their data and methodology are published as part of the record,” Pruitt said in an exclusive interview with The Daily Caller News Foundation. “Otherwise, it’s not transparent. It’s not objectively measured, and that’s important.”

Pruitt will reverse long-standing EPA policy allowing regulators to rely on non-public scientific data in crafting rules. Such studies have been used to justify tens of billions of dollars worth of regulations.

EPA regulators would only be allowed to consider scientific studies that make their data available for public scrutiny under Pruitt’s new policy. Also, EPA-funded studies would need to make all their data public.

St. Catherine's University Cancels Conference Because Too Many Speakers Were White

St. Catherine’s University in St. Paul, Minnesota, canceled a leadership conference last fall because too many of the scheduled speakers were white.

According to a report from the Star Tribune, details are emerging on why St. Catherine’s University canceled a leadership conference that was scheduled to take place last fall. The university published a statement last week acknowledging that the conference was canceled because the speaker list was not sufficiently diverse.

“We did not feel the list [of speakers] adequately represented the St. Kate’s community or fulfilled the objective of lifting up the voices of all women,” the statement read. “While this was a tough decision, we believe it was an important one.”

St. Catherine’s President, Becky Roloff, acknowledged that the decision was made due to the lack of diversity in an email that was sent to the campus community back in December.

Long Island cops dig up skeletal remains that may belong to woman missing since 1966

Suffolk County homicide detectives on Monday dug up a burlap bag wrapped around the remains in the basement of a North Fork home that once belonged to Pietrewicz’s married boyfriend, the weekly paper reported. William Boken, a former Town of Southold cop, died in 1982. He was the prime suspect in Pietrewicz's disappearance.

Schweizer: We Need Legislation to Disclose Deals Between Family Members of Politicians, Foreign Governments

Tuesday on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends,” author and Breitbart senior editor-at-large Peter Schweizer discussed his new book, “Secret Empires: How the American Political Class Hides Corruption and Enriches Family and Friends”.

After discussing Hunter Biden’s $1.5 billion deal with China, Schweizer said, “There is no disclosure. That has got to change. There has to be legislation says if your family members are doing deals with foreign governments American people need to know it.”

Schweizer said, “In the case of Mitch McConnell, Elaine Chao his wife her family is in the shipping business. If you look and dissect the shipping business they are completely dependent on the good graces of the Chinese government. In this case, Elaine Chao’s father gave a gift of 5 to $25 million dollars to Mitch McConnell, so they are direct beneficiaries.”

Officer who fatally shot Justine Damond charged with murder, turns himself in

The Minneapolis police officer who fatally shot an Australian woman in July was charged with murder Tuesday after he turned himself in when a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Officer Mohamed Noor turned himself in Tuesday in connection with the 2017 death of Justine Ruszczyk Damond, his attorney confirmed.

Noor was booked on a third-degree murder charge for perpetrating an eminently dangerous act while showing a "depraved mind." The second-degree manslaughter charge alleges he acted with "culpable negligence creating unreasonable risk."

Damond was shot July 15, minutes after calling 911 to report a possible sexual assault in the alley behind her home. The 40-year-old life coach’s death drew international attention, cost the police chief her job and forced major revisions to the department’s policy on body cameras.

McDonald’s customer turns violent after receiving wrong breakfast order

Police in Glendale, Wis., are currently seeking the public’s help in identifying an irate McDonald’s customer who assaulted a teenage employee after receiving the wrong breakfast order.

The suspect and a friend reportedly pulled up to the drive-thru of the McDonald’s just before 11 a.m. on March 18, where they placed an order for a breakfast sandwich with bacon, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. But upon receiving a breakfast sandwich with sausage instead, the woman became angry.

“What the [expletive] is this? I didn't order no sausage biscuit,” said the woman, who then threw the food back at the drive-thru operator.

A manager replaced her order with another sandwich, but she and her friend soon returned — this time entering the dining area — and claimed that the order was still wrong.

Stand Your Ground enhancement becomes law in Wyoming

Republican Gov. Matt Mead chose not to veto a measure expanding protections in cases where defensive force may be used and allowed the bill to become law without his signature.

Mead, a former federal prosecutor who has stumped to bring gun industry to the state, stood aside on HB 168, a popular bill that widens areas where no duty to retreat exists and provides immunity from civil liability in aftermath of a reasonable use of force. While the proposal’s sponsor welcomed the move, Mead said in a statement he did not feel the change was needed.

“I believe existing law adequately addresses the concerns raised in the Stand Your Ground Bill,” Mead told as the Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

What Do They Know That We Don't? DC Officials Flock To Doomsday Camps

Washington D.C. government officials are flocking to doomsday camps around the country. Which of course begs the question: what do they know that we do not?

According to the Washington Examiner, a building network of backwoods doomsday camps around the country are pulling in members from affluent areas and even Washington national security officials as the threats grow from nuclear war, an EMP (electromagnetic pulse),or virus attack. Dubbed Fortitude Ranch, the outposts promise protection and a year’s supply of food for those unable to build their own bunker with preparations for a SHTF scenario. What’s more, until a crisis strikes, the doomsday camps are being used for prepper training and vacations.

One of Fortitude Ranch’s members from the Baltimore area said that he and others joined after “waking up” to the potential of a national crisis from an attack, financial meltdown, or political violence. “For most of us, something rattled our cages and woke us up,” he said.

Judge Ignores SCOTUS, Tells Tennessee to Fund Federal Refugee Program

A March 19 federal court decision requiring taxpayers in Tennessee to fund the federal government’s refugee program ignores a 2012 Supreme Court decision, says Richard Thompson, president of the Thomas More Law Center.

The judge’s 43-page decision on the refugee program “is filled with appealable issues,” Thompson told a Tuesday event hosted by the Center for Immigration Studies. “Our view is that we should appeal it” at no cost to state taxpayers, said Roberts, who is the lead pro-bono lawyer in the case.

“We would relish that … this case could very well end up in the Supreme Court,” he said.

A Supreme Court majority ruled in 2012 that the federal government cannot force states to fund federal programs, so “the judge basically backed off because it was too controversial and ruled on the basis of standing,” Thompson added.

The case is important for many states because the federal refugee program forces state taxpayers and governments to fund most of the welfare, aid, and education costs of federal government’s policy of dropping refugees and their children in the states, he said. If states balk at paying the costs, the federal government can threaten to cut their share of federal funding for the Medicare program, he said.

In Tennessee, the federal Medicare program funds one-fifth of the state budget, or $7 billion per year.

Former Employee: ‘Horrifying’ Misuse of User Data Was Routine at Facebook

Sandy Parakilas, a former Facebook platform operations manager, claimed the company’s “horrifying” misuse of user data was routine, and that Facebook preferred to have “no idea” what third parties were doing with the freely available data.
In their report, the Guardian noted that “hundreds of millions of Facebook users are likely to have had their private information harvested by companies that exploited the same terms as the firm that collected data and passed it on to Cambridge Analytica.”

“My concerns were that all of the data that left Facebook servers to developers could not be monitored by Facebook, so we had no idea what developers were doing with the data,” claimed Parakilas. “It has been painful watching… Because I know that they could have prevented it.”

“Once the data left Facebook servers there was not any control, and there was no insight into what was going on,” he continued, adding, “Facebook was in a stronger legal position if it didn’t know about the abuse that was happening.”

“They felt that it was better not to know. I found that utterly shocking and horrifying,” Parakilas declared, also estimating that “a majority of Facebook users” probably had their data used by third party companies and developers.

FLASHBACK: Facebook COO Wanted to Help John Podesta Elect Hillary Clinton

As Facebook faces a crisis related to a user data scandal and the 2016 election, it seems appropriate to reflect on Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg telling Clinton campaign manager John Podesta that she wanted Hillary to “win badly.”

In a May 2015 email thread, Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager John Podesta offered his condolences for the sudden death of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s husband, Dave Goldberg. Sandberg thanked Podesta for his kind words, then affirmed her desire to “help” Clinton win the 2016 election. She mentioned a home visit where Clinton interacted with her children. “I still want HRC [Hillary Rodham Clinton] to win badly,” she wrote. “I am still here to help as I can. She came over and was magical with my kids.”

Previous batches of leaked emails revealed that Sandberg offered to put Podesta in contact with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, stating that Zuckerberg was interested in influencing policies relating to “social oriented objectives (like immigration, education or basic scientific research).”

Gibson, Beloved Guitar Maker, Faces Crushing $560 Million Debt

After 116 years, the Devil’s knocking on Gibson’s door. Debt of as much as $560 million is due this summer, and investors are whispering that Chief Executive Officer Henry Juszkiewicz has got to go.

Elvis Presley changed history on a Gibson J200. Eric Clapton’s famous solo on the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps’’ was played on a Gibson, and when young B.B. The fire had been accidentally started by two men fighting over a woman, and King gave his hollow-body guitar her name — Lucille.

Ocean City Police Release 2017 Annual Report Highlighting 13% Decrease in Crime

OCEAN CITY, MD – The Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) has released their Annual Report for 2017, highlighting a third consecutive year of historic low crime rates.

In 2017, the OCPD experienced an average decrease of 13 percent in serious crime in comparison to the previous five years, and a 2.5 percent decrease from 2016. The report also shows that there were significant decreases in burglaries, thefts, and simple assaults. Additionally, officer-initiated calls for service increased by over 10,000 calls. This is due in large part to the heightened number of seasonal police officers, the expansion of the public safety aide position, and the proactive nature of the Patrol Division.

“In 2017, we continued to see the lowest crime rates we’ve seen in over a quarter century,” commented Chief Ross Buzzuro. “This is a true testament to the hard work of the men and women of this department. Our personnel are dedicated to the safety of everyone in this city and that is proven by the stories and statistics within this report.”

In addition to crime and enforcement statistics, the Annual Report highlights the OCPD’s renewed focus on community engagement in 2017, such as the Coffee with Cops events, an opiate addiction awareness event, and the first edition of trading cards featuring the OCPD Mounted Unit. The accomplishments of each of the three divisions of the OCPD are also highlighted in the report.

Dems Defend Rather Than Denounce Farrakhan

Louis Farrakhan, leader of the famously anti-Semitic Nation of Islam, is a repulsive figure on the fringes of American politics. But he’s not as much on the fringes as he should be. Rep. Todd Rokita (R-IN) introduced a resolution in the House formally condemning Farrakhan for “promoting ideas that create animosity and anger” aimed at Jewish Americans and Judaism, and condemning “all manifestations of expressions of racism, anti-Semitism, and ethnic or religious intolerance.” It was a politically shrewd move, because so many Democrats just can’t bring themselves to denounce Farrakhan. Indeed, as our Arnold Ahlert wrote last week, the entire Democrat Party is slouching towards anti-Semitism.

That became even more clear Monday when Black Lives Matter, the New Black Panther Party and Al Sharpton’s National Action Network led a lobbying effort on Capitol Hill not about denouncing Farrakhan’s racism but to block Rokita’s resolution condemning it. Instead, these rabble rousers want a resolution condemning President Donald Trump for his perceived racism.

Gary Bauer noted the sad truth in the form of some questions: “Did they lobby for criminal justice reform? Better school safety measures in the inner cities? Expanding enterprise zones to boost economic opportunity in black communities? Sadly, their presence on Capitol Hill had nothing to do with any of those causes.” Instead, they’re defending a reprehensible man.

Not wearing seat belt prompts cops to seize $92,000

Wyoming takes action to torpedo 'bizarre' law

The issue of rules that allow law-enforcement agencies to confiscate cash or other property during an investigation has drawn attention recently.

Such confiscations are often allowed even if no criminal charges are ever filed, and those losing the property must go to court to get their property.

For lawmakers in one state, however, those laws have gone too far.

The Institute for Justice is reporting lawmakers in Wyoming have banned the practice by officers of “badgering” drivers stopped on traffic infractions to sign pre-written waivers transferring title to property, including cash.

The bill, “Roadside waiver of property rights prohibited,” was signed recently by Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead.

Monica Dietz- Training Coordinator for Wicomico Department of Emergency Services 911 Center states “ We are very excited to provide 9-1-1 education to this age group again this year, successful public education programs often begin in schools with students carrying what they have learned home to family members, neighbors, friends and new acquaintances. It’s a great opportunity to educate and let kids know that we (the call takers) will be there to help them during an emergency and not to be scared. “

Repeat Sexual Predator Prevention Act

Governor Hogan Thanks Members Of The Maryland Senate And House Of Delegates For Passing Important Legislation To Prosecute Repeat Sexual Offenders

We have reintroduced our Repeat Sexual Predator Prevention Act, which will allow a court to admit evidence of a defendant’s prior history of sexual assaults during prosecution for subsequent sexual offenses. Our proposal will ensure that prosecutors have the tools needed to bring these criminals to justice.” - Governor Larry Hogan, March 14, 2018
