Aldi has a lot of cheap stuff. Kinda like the dollar general of groceries.
ReplyDeleteAldi's has a different selection & I can get all my spices for German food. I love Aldi's but have to travel to get to one. It is not like the Dollar General.
DeleteHow many more grocery stores do we need in Salisbury. It is just like the drug stores. They are on every corner.
ReplyDeleteI now live in Stafford Va and when we first moved here we weren't sure about Aldi. You insert a quarter to use the cart to ensure you return it yourself. Also they don't have an in store bakery or deli. They occasionally sell name brand foods as special but most are their own brands. Wich are amazing. The only thing I wasn't fond of was their fig newtons. However if you buy something and you aren't satisfied, they have a double guarantee where they refund your money and replace the product. They don't bag your groceries so you can bring your own or buy theirs for 10 cents a peice. It helps keep prices low in the store. I can save 50 to 100 dollars depending on what's needed for that week. I love Aldi now that I'm used to it. Also it's a great employment opportunity. Their cashiers start at 13.00 an hour and shift managers start at 17.50 an hour

10:56, Why wouldn't they take advantage of WIC checks? Just feel blessed you aren't in such a position you have to depend on such help. Remember, you have to QUALIFY to get such assistance. At least ALDI's sells products for a whole lot less.

DeleteThat's a bold assumption. I get wic, don't do drugs, don't live in section 8 and have a cheap android. Just because someone gets assistance, doesn't mean they abuse it.
DeleteWhat's the other brand? I'd love to see a Trader Joe's, Harris Teeter, or Publix. Giant was a pretty good grocery store. It's sad to see them go.
ReplyDeleteWegman's. Closest one I know of, is in Frederick, MD. Won't happen though, not unless they decline to accept food stamps, EBT and WIC.
DeleteLidl, is the third grocery store, they are opening on the north end of Salisbury. It going to tear down the hotel where the black teenager got shot 2 summers ago.
ReplyDelete@10:47, 2 grocery stores? I can think of Acme, Walmart, Save a Lot, and at least 3 Food Lions in Salisbury. But I will welcome ALDI for sure!
ReplyDeleteI do not think there streamlined business model allows them to take the WIC checks. My sister tried to use them in her local store and was turned down. This was in the summer by the way. Heck, they just started to take CC's recently.
ReplyDeleteMaybe this store will be different. Regardless, the opening of an new store is exciting for the area.
I mean no disrespect by stating that, I just see a lot of families using them in the area. I agree their money on the check would go farther at an Aldis.
Give us something at the south end of town. I hate going to the north end. Acme is too expensive with less selection and Food Lion doesn't fill the gap.

ReplyDeleteI think that Aldi will be a breath of fresh air for Salisbury shoppers. The products are good, the prices are better than fair, and there are zero shopping carts littering the parking lots.

ReplyDeleteThey are similar in theory. However, Aldi's brand is far superior. I shopped there in NC and there wasn't a product I didn't love. They even had a dozen eggs for like 0.48 at the time. (3 years ago) so yes, you bag your own, yes they carry 'their own brand", but this is where the comparison to Save-a-Lot ends. As mentioned above you deposit a quarter for carts Nd get it back upon return, but it is a huge money saving option.

ReplyDeleteI have never heard of these new stores before. Can folks who may have shopped there, explain what to expect? I noticed a previous poster stated no carts in the parking lot, so does this mean no carts in the store and do we bring our own bags/boxes for groceries?

I miss the Giant soooooooooooooo bad! The Acme is terrible. They are higher in price than Giant, and the quality is poor. The deli is awful without the chief, the store is dark, the produce is poor, and the selection of products is simply not there. This store is EXACTLY like I remember Acme being when it was on Main St./Salisbury many moons ago. The checkers, who are mostly new are hateful and unfriendly; not like Giant personnel. The checkers/baggers even when asked not to do it, load the bags as heavy as possible and it makes it so hard for me lifting the heavy bags in/out of my car with a bad back. They act like all they want is the money and no conversation.
Hands down, the Giant local personnel were far superior then what the Acme has.
I definitely miss Giant.

Aldi has carts that require a quarter deposit you get back when you return the cart to the front of the store. Id argue a quarter isn't much of an incentive to return the cart but it works. No stray carts hitting cars and carts taking up parking spaces..
DeleteThe new Acme sucks. I was a loyal Giant shopper and continued with Acme until I tried to purchase lettuce and all the heads were rotten. This is another sign of the downward slide of this country. I firmly believe the rumors of another recession or worse. Everything is getting worse and costing more.

You insert a quarter to remove and use the cart. More incentive to rerun it on your own. Also you bag your own groceries and they do not have an on site deli or bakery. Their products are very well made though and they have great selections and prices for organic fruits and veggies. Milk is 2.75 here for a gallon of whole. The only product I didn't like there were the fig newtons. They have a double guarantee though where they replace your item and refund your money. Everything else I have had is amazing. They have their own brands for home and garden items as well. It will be a great job opportunity for Salisbury. Cashiers are started at 13 an hour and shift managers start at 17.50 an hour. Not too bad. Plus benefits. I bow love Aldi and depending on their weekly sale and what's on my grocery list for my family of 5, I easily save 50 to 100 dollars on my grocery bill. Well worth bagging my items and passing my cart on to someone else walking up. After all, it's just a quarter. :)

ReplyDeleteDon't understand the fuss about Acme. I find their prices to be comparable to Giant. Their meat department is superior to Giant and way better than Food Lion. I do miss some items which Giant carried. I don't need a Dollar General food store!

ReplyDeleteAldi's is the lower cost version of Trader Joe's and is owned by the same company. Some of Aldi's products seem to be the same as Trader Joe's in different packaging and with lower prices.

ReplyDeleteBrand name canned goods are the same wherever you buy them,as are brand name anything else.Why hordes of people attend grand openings is a mystery.Meat quality may vary,but seriously most people I know focus on the basic necessities and not extravagances.The convenience of getting my groceries and being able to pay for them without waiting in a great long line means a lot to me.

ReplyDeleteHooray I like choices, why do we not complain when their are so many oriental restaurants in Salisbury, or so many Mexican ones. What we really need are down home meal restaurants where there is a lot of variety, with cheaper prices. The more competition in town is what we need not dozens of the same thing. And what is the latest word on Cracker Barrel anyone know?

ReplyDeleteBoth SuperFresh (A&P) and Giant took a beating and closed in the location now occupied by Hobby Lobby. Don't think there were enough residences in reasonable radius to support them, plus the traffic hassle.
WalMart and Sam's offer more than food so you can play it either way; food trip with some general items, or general trip with some food needs. Their model attracts shoppers from beyond a nearby residential radius.
New store to located at motel site? Most of the issues SuperFresh and Giant faced, with more challenging access. Rotsa ruck!
Once Again Salisbury getting the leftovers nothing but low class stores just to fill space.
ReplyDeleteWould be nice if Day & Co would concentrate on bringing more real jobs to the community. How will people shop in these spiffy new stores if they don't have career-jobs to fund their food purchases? Economic sense is lost on the local government.
ReplyDeleteI live in Prince George's County and we have Aldi store in the multiple parts of the county. Their produce is actually good. I was skeptical of them at first but I never had rotten produce many times I have been. The only downfall is that you must bring reusable bags as they don't have use bags. It's nowhere near the "dollar general" of stores at all.
