Second Prisoner Now Says Freddie Gray Didn't Hurt Himself

The prisoner who was in the police van with Freddie Gray on the day he suffered a spinal cord injury that led to his death now says Gray did not cause his own injuries, Mediaite reports.

The Washington Post on Wednesday reported a leaked document from the investigation in which the second prisoner, who was not identified by the Post, claimed he could hear Gray on the other side of a partition "banging against the walls" and believed he was intentionally trying to injure himself."

But on Thursday, the man spoke to Baltimore NBC affiliate WBAL-TV and disputed that report.

The man, Donta Allen, told the station, "When I got in the van, I didn’t hear nothing. … It was a smooth ride. We went straight to the police station. All I heard was a little banging for about four seconds.

He said that he originally thought Gray was "banging his head," but now knows "they did something to him and his body’s been wobbling back there.... He can’t hurt himself back in no paddy wagon."

Allen said that when the van got to the police station he heard police say, "We gave him a run for his money."

"When we got to the police station, they said he didn’t have no pulse or nothing," Allen said.

"They called his name, 'Mr. Gray, Mr. Gray.' And he wasn’t responsive."

  1. This article quotes what he told WBAL early yesterday. Since then he's told at least one other version that is in the middle of what he said here and the original Wash Post leak. Who knows with this guy, since he's already told 2 different stories to at least 2 different media sources.

  2. He was under the thumb of the police during the first statement. Perhaps he feels a little more free right now. One thing's for sure; you'll not here the truth from the police.

  3. He's now "under the thumb" of his homies in the hood so of course he's going to change his story.
You people around here are completely clueless as to life in the ghetto.

  11. Why wasn't he strapped into the Van?

  12. The Gray family attorney was claiming early on that they were going to get their own independent autopsy. Whether they did or not is yet to be seen.
According to one news source, the Gray family and their attorney/attorneys were seen leaving the Office of the States Attorney last night.

  13. Its the same BS as the hands up crap. The thugs don't care about the truth, it's whatever they can sell to hurt the cops and put the blame on them.
The guy gets back in the hood and they find out he backed the cops story; game over for him. He will be shunned from the only home he has ever known.

I think everyone needs to go back to watch COPS the TV show. It's the same narrative over and over. Guy runs, gets caught, continues to resist while screaming "I can't breath" or "I'm not resisting" or "I'm hurt" because they know they are on camera. Sound familiar. They may be thugs with a 8th grade education but they know how to play the system.

I don't know if Freddie hurt himself in that van. But the guy has filed lawsuits before, he knew his arrest was photographed; why not toss yourself around and claim police brutality and start another lawsuit.

  14. The man who was responsible for taping one of the videos of the arrest, was saying when interviewed by the news about a week ago, when the van took off and stopped the first time, he could still hear Gray screaming 2 blocks away.

  15. 855 REALLY?

Because would you reach over a whack job thug to buckle his seat belt when he can spit in your face with a possible disease or BITE YOU.

  16. 8:55-Because he was irate. I heard something about spitting and did read that BPD got a warrant to search officer's clothes for DNA, no doubt to confirm that Gray was indeed spitting.

  20. For real 9:20-you know detectives taped it when they interviewed him.
The news keeps showing the picture of Gray in the red shirt. It's online too. If you look closely, you can see just above his t shirt line slightly to the left of center chest what looks like a pretty good sized indent at the base of his neck. Neck surgery is done anteriorly.

  23. All I'm reading is the ignorant comments which go to justify a person's death. Truly sad that so many people think it's okay for whatever reason--he's a thug, maybe he was spitting, and my favorite "if you weren't doing anything wrong you'd have nothing to worry about" mentality.

Simple solution to all of this. Body cameras. That'll stop people from crying "brutality" when it's false and keep LE accountable. Because after all, if cops were doing nothing wrong....they'd have nothing to worry about.

  24. so there are 6 officers being charged on the words of criminals

  25. Come on dumb people. This young man was handcuff behind the back and leg irons were placed on the ankle's. How can Mr Gray protect himself from a rough ride. How hope they bury these policemen's so deep in the criminal justice prison systems, it will take the act of the almighty to release them.

  26. I sure wouldn't believe what the police said ,they are know liars.
