BREAKING NEWS: Wicomico County Director of Finance/Budget, Andrew G. Mackel Terminated

Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver has announced that Andrew G. Mackel, Director of Finance/Budget, is no longer employed by the County as of close of business today. Mr. Mackel was appointed to serve by the previous administration and was approved by the County Council on July 1, 2011.

All County Department Heads are at will employees who serve at the pleasure of the County Executive. The County Council must approve new appointments.

A search will begin immediately for a new Director. No disruption in service is expected.

  2. Good work Bob. Keep it up. You are nowhere near done. Best vote we've ever made.

  3. Build a great team, Bob. I don't know this person at all, but a finance director is someone whom you, the council and the public should be able to trust implicitly.

  4. Heard the guy was arrogant and difficult. Good job in starting the culture change that is so badly needed. I agree with other posters...tip of the iceberg. Keep going and get your own people who share the vision of those who put you in office. Leaner, more efficient government without all the entitled abusers of the system. Good employees have nothing to worry about it. The abusers are obvious. Go gettum Bob.

  5. Kick @ss and take names. Hope those clowns in your own office are paying attention. They should be next.

  6. Boo yah! Now that is what a leader does! FINALLY, someone with guts is running this county.

  7. 9:03, I agree. Bob is the new County Executive and like his decisions or not, Bob had a vision the voters supported and he's on a clear mission to achieve his goals.

I for one support ALL changes Bob might make in the near future and I hope he continues to rid of the dead wood sooner than later. He's got a very difficult road ahead of him and the sooner he can get a firm grip the sooner he can prove to the citizens he was the right choice.

Besides, there are a LOT of people out there not only looking for a good job, there are so many people out there who would so appreciate the health benefits that go with working for the County.

So keep screwing off people, my guess is that Bob is nowhere near done.

  8. Elected leaders should have their own people who believe in their values and vision. You've got more work to do Mr. Culver, but you are off to an impressive start. Thank you for following through with your campaign promises to fix Wicomico County.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Mr. Albero, I agree he has a difficult job. Those who have lived off the system are going to fight him every step of the way. It will take a lot of strength and determination to make all the changes needed. The leeches will be vocal, but those of us who support Culver need to be more vocal.

And, you are so right about the benefits. Retirees make out like a bandit. There are plenty of people who would love to work for the county - at the highest levels too for less pay than the ungrateful, naysayers that currently are employed.

  10. Based on the recent history and how the county has fallen into grave financial straights......it's time for a new direction. Look folks.....there are very qualified people out there looking to offer their assistance in pulling us outta this....but in previous years why would someone qualified even bother? Let's hope Bob continues this house cleaning.....any things better than were we are right now!

  11. Wicomico has been run by the likes of Ted Shea, Matt Creamer and now Wayne Strasberg for so long, department heads forget who their boss really is. Good work Bob for showing them who is really in charge. It is someone the PEOPLE voted in office not someone who is self-appointed as "the boss". Are you paying attention Strasberg?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Good job Bob. Keep cleaning house. A new broom sweeps clean.

  13. Love this. Everyday I am feeling better and better about the county. Thank you Bob Culver!

  14. I don't like to see anyone lose their job and I, personally, got aloong with Andy but in reality, he was a pompous jerk. When he was first hired, he would hollar out for the "girls" to go fetch his coffee. Really, Andy? in this day in time you think experienced county workers are your valets? tusk tusk. bye bye

    ReplyDelete
  15. 9:17 I agree. The county has been run by such a tight little click for so long, who would want to be a part of it? It is time for new blood and fresh ideas. Hope Culver continues to break up the good old boys and give others a chance to show what they can do. Lots of good people are out there and I agree, they would help if given the opportunity.

  16. 9:37 that sounds like sexual harassment to me. Who the h#ll did he think he was? Why would you put up with that kind of degrading treatment? Did he have "the boys" do anything for him? SMH

  18. Yes there are plenty of us in the county which would love to work FOR the county and not just find a way to stay employed.Good hard workers make for a nice, good looking and pridefull county citizenry!

  19. Next, Straburg and Creamer please. They are not a good fit with you and have been sucking the taxpayers long enough.

  20. How long do you think that the local " good ole boys" will try to find some "dirt" on Bob to try to get an honest public servant out of office?

    ReplyDelete
  21. He was a total ass to everyone who had to deal with him. He was good at his job but a total ass to deal with. The hope that Bob would fire him was my number one reason I supported Bob.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think every department head should be closely evaluated to find out just how much money is being wasted. Look very closely at each one. Not one of them should be overlooked. There are more problems than the employees will tell because of the Dept Heads use their power to control & mute the devoted employees while they allow their buddies do whatever they want. There's a lot of good hard working county employees & it's a shame that they are mistreated & overlooked because of the pompous arrogance of the people appointed by someone that had no clue as to what some county departments even do.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Mackel was an $&@ to deal with no matter what the issue

  24. Thank You for doing your job Bob. We could just "hug" you.

  26. Wayne STRASBERG has to go,

  27. I hope Ray Macicci(sp) and John Molnar are next.

In case you didn't know Ed Urban and Gary Mackes are pretty tight. John Molnar is Ed Urban's son in law. How do you think he got the job! Gary Mackes ran the county for years behind the scenes.

  28. The purchasing department needs to be next. There is so much waste caused by laziness! Konrad is a weasel to, he just covers it up better than others.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm so glad to hear the news. Most if not all the employees, especially women under Mr. Mackel were bullied by him and sometimes by one assistant (a woman). My wife was bullied by that s.o.b.

Also, if possible; Mr. Culver appointment someone who is a resident and taxpayer of Wicomico County.

Get rid of John and Dawn and the job will be done.

  30. It's a sad day when you all are jumping for joy when someone gets fired. I don't know this guy & don't know the reasons for him getting let go, but to be so joyful about it is insane. Can't you all just thank him for his service & wish him well. Do you have to run his name thru the mud?

  33. ATTN: Bob,

Most of these department heads are getting paid at the top end of their salary scale. I volunteer to do Matt or Wayne's job at 1/2 their present pay PLUS I will do so withOUT any benefits and withOUT any county vehicle or milage expense. If interested, fire those two and come on the SBYNEWS site and let us know. thanks, Bob.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 7:27 I'm sure he will jump right on that. You don't seem qualified to eat ice cream, let alone hold a job.

  35. 8:03 - part of 'being good at your job" is to not be abusive to those who work for you, with you and above you. If you are demeaning, sarcastic and insubordinate you are not being good at your job. You are being a problem employee. Where do you work and what kind of employee are you if you think being "abrasive" (and that is putting it mildly) is acceptable?

  36. I feel like half of the people on this site read that someone is "overpaid" or "lazy" and then parrot that same thought on every blog post similar to this.

Come correct if you're going to call for someone's job. Everyone that's been posted so far will have a job for the next 6 months, at least.

    ReplyDelete
  37. No one is indispensible in his or her job. Perhaps some people forget that.

  38. 8:22 - Wayne, stop reading the blog on County time.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 8:37 - Agree. There is a sick entitlement among the appointed leaders of this county that needs to be eliminated so the hardworking employees who work under these goons can have an opportunity to shine and enjoy their work. Good for Culver that he is addressing it. Finally, an elected official with courage.

  40. I always hate to see someone loose their job. I worked for Andy for a few years before I was able to take an early retirement. When I say we"butted " heads on a regula basis I'm not exaggerating. Overall I liked him personally but I didn't feel he had the people skills required for the job. I can only speak from my personal experiences but being a government employee was professional death. Never in all my working life have I ever been more tested, frustrated, or ready to commit mayhem! GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES usually want to do a good job and get things accomplished. But they are coerced and thwarted at every turn by the screwed up politics of the "good Ole boys" network that runs so deep. It goes back sooooo far. Thank God I was able to get out of that hell hole with my integrity still intact. So many things still need to happen in that office . I don't believe in just letting people go for the sake of a new regime unless there is a legitimate reason. Otherwise you are no better than the last command. There are still some people left that truly need to be investigated. They should probably retire and give someone a chance to make that office a place you want to get up in the morning and look forward to.

  41. I think Andy Mackel showed his true colors when he 'rubber stamped' and signed off on the building of the BMS projects. He skewed the numbers into Pollitt's favor and then the rest is history. What a financial mess - but at least Bob Culver is trying to get a handled on this 1000 lb. gorilla. This is a positive first step in restoring some sanity to an otherwise insane system.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 8:43 - there's no entitlement at all. Department heads are scared sh*tless.

  43. I wish there were about 10 more Bob Culvers in office. Maybe then Wicomico residents could finally enjoy a good nights sleep as opposed to having to lay awake all night.

  45. Wicomico county is in dire straits, all department heads SHOULD be worried, it's called accountability! In my 40 years of voting, I think Bob Culver is the best choice I've ever made.

The good ole boys are still out there, they like to stay out of the real picture like Phil Tighlman, Barrie, Louise Smith is still a puppet master of Ireton.

  46. Finally somebody that runs for an office on a platform of change and actually sticks to their word and making much needed changes. If these Rino's that are in office don't pull their weight, it's time to cut the cord on them also!

  47. Culver is no one's puppet. Department heads should be worried. They are culpable in the deceit that has been inflicted on the taxpayers. Creamer is losing it and drinks too much. The Council members are fools to keep him and that Melissa who owes the county back pay from Creamer covering for her many absences. The council office is a train wreck. Let's see if Cannon has any intestinal fortitude to fix it. I'm guessing not - another puppet in him. Culver needs to not fund them if they won't fix their mess.

  49. Let's be honest. Most of these comments come from County employees who are getting paid to browse the internet. I know for a fact that department heads and administration on the third floor check this blog to see what people are saying. Some of those good ole boys are really starting to feel the heat. Time for them to quit before they get fired! Andy will be missed by many. He wasn't the real bully. Everyone knows that the attorney's make all the calls around here.

  50. Creamer won't go anywhere when Baker is still employed. They are best buds. Let's not forget Creamer and his secretary's close relationship. How else would she be able to abuse county time? Maybe the auditor should keep track of that.

I agree, but Bob needs to keep going. If he can't work with the staff in place now he should find people he can work for. After all the current employees/department heads showed their allegiance to the defeated County Executive for 8 years. Clean house Mr. Culver.

She was out sick yesterday and today. My guess is the previous council under the leadership of President Matt Holloway and Vice President John Hall failed us the tax payers for letting this go on under their watch. And what fools the new council are for voting Holloway back in as their VP. Hopefully the new council will realize what has happened and clean their house.

Baker legally stole retirement time he didn't work for. The previous council at the time which included Prettyman and Bartkovich allowed that to happen. Now the man gets to retire on the tax payers dime.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yes, the department heads and executive staff are showing little loyalty to Bob. Their behavior is disgraceful and full of disrespect. Some totally disregard his instructions on actions to take or not take. There are plenty of people, including second level managers, who are more than capable of replacing the money-sucking losers who cannot get over the election. It makes you wonder why they can't get over it...maybe it is because NOW they have to actually work. Say bye-bye to your gravy train.

  64. I'd like to see Bob talk with select employees. Some have been held back from providing some good suggestions and would help save the county money.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Some of you commenters crack me up. Just because you don't like somebody...doesn't mean that they did a bad job. Instead of saying that "these people cost the county millions" give specifics. Some of you employees just didn't like the fact that the department heads expected you to work. I am not saying that Bob won't do a good job, but so far, his actions really haven't saved the tons of money that you imply. Some of you are saying that previous employees supported the old regime.... that is because they had to. They will go in whatever direction they are directed... stop making such a big deal out of it and blowing it our of proportion. It is obvious that some of you have an axe to grind...hope you realize how stupid some of your comments sound.
