Obama pays glowing tribute to tearful departing Attorney General Eric Holder as a liberal civil rights champion

Attorney General Eric Holder fought back tears on Thursday as President Barack Obama praised his legal legacy as a civil rights champion after Holder announced his sudden resignation.

Although Holder will leave the Justice Department under a cloud of controversies, the president gushed in his political eulogy that America's top cop 'believes, as I do, that justice is not just an abstract theory. It’s a living and breathing principle.'

Obama said in the State Dining Room that he believes Holder's proudest achievement' was his record on civil rights reform, what he calls 'the conscience of the building' that the DOJ occupies just six blocks down Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House.

'Under his watch,' Obama said, 'the department has brought a record number of prosecutions for human trafficking, and for hate crimes – because no one in America should be afraid to walk down the street because of the color of their skin, the love in their heart, the faith they practice, or the disabilities that they live with.'

Report: Immigrant Population in U.S. Reaches Record 41.3M; Middle East, Asia, Africa Lead Growth

A new report from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) released on Thursday shows that the number of immigrants living in the United States – legal and illegal -- reached a record 41.3 million as of July 2013, and the fasting growing immigrant population are from the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

According to the report, the regions with the largest increases of immigrants to the U.S. from 2010 to 2013 were South Asia (up 373,000, 16 percent growth); East Asia (up 365,000, 5 percent growth); the Caribbean (up 223,000, 6 percent growth), the Middle East (up 208,000, 13 percent growth); and sub-Saharan Africa (up 177,000, 13 percent growth).

“The new data makes clear that while Latin America and the Caribbean are still a significant source of immigration, the growth is being driven in large part by immigration from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa,” Steven Camarota, director of research at CIS and lead author of the report, said.

Hannah Graham suspect Jesse Matthew COMPLAINS about treatment in court

Missing student Hannah Graham was so drunk she could barely walk, the owner of the bar where she was last seen has revealed.

Tempo Restaurant owner Brice Cunningham said on Thursday that the University of Virginia sophomore, 18, appeared to be incapacitated as she walked away from the nightspot with Jesse Matthew on September 13.

Matthew had been drinking at the bar earlier that night before he encountered the 18-year-old outside on Charlottesville's pedestrian Downtown Mall, Cunningham said.

Matthew then briefly re-entered the bar, ordered what credit card records suggest were two beers, and rejoined the teenager outside. The bar's door monitor told police they walked off with Matthew's arm around her for support, he said.

Upcoming Anniversary: October 1st Will Mark 18 Years of No Global Warming

According to the datasets used last year, October 1st will mark the 18th year of “no significant warming trend in surface average temperature," says Patrick Michaels, director of the Cato Institute’s Center for the Study of Science.

And even if the current 18-year trend were to end, it would still take nearly 25 years for average global temperature figures to reflect the change, said Michaels, who has a Ph.D. in ecological climatology and spent three decades as a research professor of environmental sciences at the University of Virginia.

Sooner or later, even Al Gore and the numerous scientists, academics and politicians who agree with him that “Earth has a fever” will have to admit that their climate models predicting catastrophic global warming were off by a long shot, said Michaels, who was also a contributing editor to the United Nations’ second Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report.

Hogan's daughter speaks out against Brown’s lies in latest TV ad

ANNAPOLIS, MD – September 26, 2014 – Larry Hogan’s daughter, Jaymi Sterling, speaks out against the false smear campaign Anthony Brown is running against her father in a campaign ad released today. In the ad, she rebukes recent false claims from the Brown campaign and reinforces Hogan’s support for women’s rights.

"I could not be more proud of my daughter Jaymi and her sisters Julie and Kim. They are three strong, independent women who have been successful in all of their endeavors. When Jaymi saw the outright lies my opponent is saying about me, she wanted to set the record straight once and for all,” said Hogan. “It's unfortunate that my opponent is so desperate, so unwilling to talk about the real issues, and so unable to defend his own 8 year record that he feels he has to stoop to these outrageous, false attacks in an effort to cling to his power."

Hogan’s daughter said, "The fact that Anthony Brown is trying to frighten women into not voting for my dad is disgraceful. This represents exactly why women, and all Marylanders, are tired of politics and politicians as usual. Marylanders deserve a honest, forthright conversation on the issues that people care about, and leadership that has a plan to turn our economy around. I believe that leadership is what we will get from my dad, Larry Hogan."

TRANSCRIPT:

"Let me tell you about my dad, Larry Hogan. He married my mom and became the father of three independent, strong young women. These ads attacking him as anti-woman are just wrong. He is the only candidate who favors over the counter birth control, covered by insurance, and he is committed to not changing current Maryland law on choice. Dad encouraged my sisters and me every step of the way. He loves this state, almost as much as he loves us. He'll make a great governor."

Police, Protesters Clash After Ferguson Apology

Police and protesters clashed briefly in Ferguson just hours after the St. Louis suburb's police chief issued an apology to the family of Michael Brown, a black 18-year-old who was fatally shot by a white police officer last month.

Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson appeared outside the police department in civilian clothes late Thursday to assure protesters that there would be changes in the wake of Brown's killing, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

"All those things that are causing mistrust are being evaluated and we are going to be making changes," Jackson said.

The police chief started to march with protesters around 11 p.m. Soon after, a scuffle broke out about 20 feet behind the chief and one protester was arrested. The Post-Dispatch said at least three other protesters were arrested after another confrontation.

After 35 years of marriage, a husband and wife came for counseling.

When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the years they had been married.

On and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured.

Finally, after allowing this for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and after asking the wife to stand, he embraced and kissed her long and passionately as her husband watched - with a raised eyebrow.

The woman shut up and quietly sat down in a daze.

The therapist turned to the husband and said, "This is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week. Can you do this?"

"Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays,

But on Fridays, I golf."

Troopers Investigate Crash Involving School Bus

Milford, DE - Delaware State Police are currently investigating a two vehicle crash involving a school bus which occurred this afternoon.

The initial investigation has determined that the crash occurred this afternoon, Friday, September 26, 2014, at approximately 3:20 p.m., as Brenda J. Stanton, 74, of Milford, DE, was operating a 2000 Honda Accord and was traveling northbound on Bay Road just south of Thompsonville Road in Milford. Stanton failed to see that a 2009 school bus being operated by Jeanette A. Drummond, 34, of Milford, DE, was stopping directly in front of her. The front of Stanton’s vehicle then struck the rear of the school bus.

Brenda Stanton was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Milford Memorial Hospital where she was treated for her minor injuries. She was cited by troopers with Inattentive Driving.

There were fifteen children on the school bus owned by the Milford Academy at the time of the crash. One 11 year old female student was removed from the scene and transported to the Milford Memorial Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.

One lane of Bay Road was closed for approximately one hour as the crash was investigated and cleared.

Gas Drilling Public Health Risks Get An Airing

Garrett County residents are getting a chance to hear about the potential public health risks of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas in their region.

The local health department is hosting a presentation Thursday night on a study conducted by the University of Maryland School of Public Health.

The study was first presented last month to a state commission that will recommend rules for safe drilling in Maryland’s portion of the Marcellus shale formation.

The study found a high likelihood that shale gas production would negatively affect air quality in the region.

The Number One Thing That Women Are Looking For In A Husband

Is it looks? Is it a charming personality? Is it compatibility? No, it isn’t any of those things. According to a Pew Research Center study that was just released on Wednesday, “a steady job” is the number one thing that women are looking for in a husband. And considering the fact that the labor force participation rate for men has been falling for decades, it should be no surprise that the marriage rate has been declining as well. In fact, as I wrote about the other day, the marriage rate in the U.S. is at a 93 year low and single Americans make up more than half the population for the first time ever. This is a very disturbing trend, but it is not likely to change any time soon. In fact, our economic problems are probably only going to get worse from here. So as the pool of “eligible bachelors” continues to shrink, what are women going to do?

The chart that I have posted below shows how the labor force participation rate for men has been declining ever since the 1950s. What this means is that the percentage of men that are employed or that are looking for employment has been steadily falling for a very, very long time…

Eagle Rescued In Md. Now In Recovery From Lead Poisoning

PASADENA, Md. (WJZ)—Normally, bald eagles are spotted flying high above. But not the eagle an Anne Arundel County man saw.

Alex DeMetrick reports this eagle was struggling for its life in a Pasadena Creek.

The Maryland Yacht Club sits where Rock Creek empties into the Chesapeake Bay. Maintenance manager Ernie Jenkins was walking the property when he heard frantic splashing near a floating dock.

“I turned and looked and there he was, an eagle in the water with his wings stretched out. I said ‘I can’t let him drown; I gotta get him out,'” said Jenkins, Maryland Yacht Club.

Did survivalist cop killer deliberately target trooper because he thought officer was having affair with his brother's wife?

Alleged copkiller Eric Frein knew of one of the state troopers who was shot in a shift-change ambush — and he may have believed the trooper was having an affair with his own sister-in-law, MailOnline can reveal exclusively.

Alex Douglass, who was critically injured after being hit in the pelvis, lives less than half a mile from the family of Frein's brother and was friends with the fugitive's sister-in-law Melissa.

Police say they have ruled out the possibility of an affair after 'extensive interviews' with Mrs. Frein, the wife of Michael Frein, which are understood to have included a polygraph test.

'We have investigated the rumor of the affair thoroughly after we learned about it', Pennsylvania Sate police spokesman Trooper Tom Kelly told MailOnline. 'There is no truth to the affair.

Annoying? But profitable

For most area residents, the distinct sound of the H2O International rolling into town this week is somewhere between a Whoopee Cushion and a bagpiper with a respiratory infection.

But for an increasing number of local businesses, the VW- and Audi-centric car show is the sound of cash hitting the drawer.

And for the Ocean City Police Department, it’s the crisp sound of traffic violations being torn out of ticket books.

“I know a lot of people don’t like it and the town officials want to keep their distance,” said Jeff Burton, General Manager of the 45th Street Village, whose parking lot has long been a de-facto congregation during the week leading up to the show.

Ocean City Better Prepared This Year For Car Rally; Police, Promoter Working Together

OCEAN CITY – As the bugs make their way into town for the annual H20i event, the Ocean City Police Department is preparing to control crowds by partnering with private properties and continuing to keep a working relationship with the event organizer.

The 17th Annual H20 International (H20i) event is a two-day VW/Audi rally that will be held this weekend at Fort Whaley Campground off Route 50 where, according to event organizer Jay Shoup, an average 800 to 1,000 cars are registered to be shown. However, the unsanctioned event with Ocean City will draw thousands of spectators to the resort where cars and spectators gather in parking lots and along Coastal Highway.

“We are having very little luck in finding any vacancies this weekend, so it should be a very busy weekend,” Ocean City Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association Executive Director Susan Jones said. “We have certainly seen an increase in import cars come in for this weekend’s unsanctioned event, and we can just tell from looking out our windows it is increasing day by day.”

Last year, the Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) reported a total of 2,207 calls for service between officers and citizens, and between traffic stops, traffic citations, and traffic warnings, there was a total of 1,584 traffic enforcement actions. There were also a total of 14 alcohol citations, 53 total arrests, seven drug arrests, four weapon arrests and seven DUI arrests.

The suspect is described as a white male with brown hair and a dark complexion–possibly of Middle Eastern descent.

Changing wind patterns - and not global warming - are causing temperatures to rise on America's West Coast according to new study

Increased temperatures on America's West Coast are not a result of human-caused climate change, but rather naturally occurring wind changes according to a new study.

The 1 degree Fahrenheit of warming that has been recorded on the coast of the northwest Pacific Ocean is due to weaker winds and changing ocean circulation, not a buildup of greenhouse gasses.

These weaker winds accounted for more than 80% of the warming trend along the Pacific Northwest coast between Washington and Northern California, and 60% of the warming in Southern California.

Democrats Resort to Entitlement Fear-Mongering in Mid-Terms

The patest tactic of Democrats cocnerrned about lsoing their Senate majority in November involves trying to motivate more seniors to turn out and vote for them, as opposed to the GOP in November.

Per a National Journal report, this is from a new ad targeting Republican Bill Cassidy in Louisiana. "Bill Cassidy needs to know that seniors are paying attention ... Seniors are troubled by Bill Cassidy's vote to raise the eligibility age for Medicare.... There's more: Cassidy wants to replace Medicare with a voucher system, requiring seniors to buy private insurance with fewer benefits and higher costs."

The ad ends with, "Seniors can't afford to pay more."

The DSCC is reportedly backing the ad with $2.5 million.

Doctors now using raw honey to fight infections in patients

Raw honey is one of the many medicines used at Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk. Jamie Clements is a wound care nurse who often uses Medihoney on her diabetes patients who have infected sores that won`t heal.

“With the diabetic patient, they usually have vascular issues and neuropathy and uncontrolled blood sugar, so it`d be a difficult wound to heal and so they might be walking on it so the antimicrobial aspects of Medihoney would be a good aspect,” says Jamie Clements, a nurse at Bon Secours DePaul

Honey has a long history in medicine used by the romans, Greeks and Egyptians for burns abscesses and wounds. Now thanks to a study published this month, doctors better understand why it works so well. Dr. Nancy Khardori is an infectious disease expert at Eastern Virginia Medical School and has used honey in her practice.

Majority of Americans want a third party

Democrats and Republicans are held in such low esteem that for the second year in a row a majority of U.S. adults said a third political party is needed, according to a new Gallup poll.

Since 2007, the call for a third political party has never dipped below 46 percent. Fifty-eight percent now want a third party, down only two points from last year’s high of 60 percent.

Gallup started asking the question in 2003, the last time that a majority of Americans thought both parties were doing an adequate job. That figure has now dropped to 35 percent.

The desire for a new party is even between both parties: 46 percent of Republicans and 47 percent of Democrats. But it's stronger among nonpartisans: 71 percent of independents want a third political party.

Should We Hope to Die at 75?

Contra Ezekiel Emanuel, age is no absolute barometer for human vitality and dignity.

Normally, no one would care that in a recentAtlantic essay — “Why I Hope to Die at 75” — 57-year-old Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel argued that living to be 75 years old was long enough for anyone. After 75, Emanuel suggests, “We are no longer remembered as vibrant and engaged but as feeble, ineffectual, even pathetic.”

But Emanuel is no garden-variety crackpot. Nor is he a wannabe science-fiction writer dreaming of a centrally planned planet of robust youthful humanoids. Unfortunately, he was one of the chief architects of the troubled Affordable Care Act and a key medical advisor to the Obama administration.

The ACA’s conservative critics have long knocked Obamacare as a first step toward medical rationing. Read Emanuel’s diatribe against living too long, and suddenly Sarah Palin’s attack on Obamacare’s “death panels” does not seem so far-fetched.

Mortgage Lending to Minorities Declines to 14-Year Low

The share of mortgage lending to minority borrowers fell to at least a 14-year low as U.S. regulators struggle to ease credit to blacks and Hispanics shut out of the housing recovery.

These borrowers, whose share of the purchase mortgage market has been shrinking since the collapse of subprime lending, continued to lose ground to white borrowers through 2013, according to federal data released this week. Blacks and Hispanics were a smaller portion of borrowers last year than they were in 2000, before the housing bubble.

Minorities, who tend to have less savings and lower credit scores than whites, have been hit hardest by lenders who are giving mortgages only to the strongest borrowers. Fair-lending advocates and civil-rights groups are urging the government to create new loan products and change how creditworthiness is determined to give blacks and Hispanics greater access to one of the best vehicles for building wealth.

“These numbers are a wake-up call that the housing market is a major driver of the economy and it can’t be a vibrant market when so many new households are excluded from it,” said Jim Carr, a former Fannie Mae executive who is now a scholar at the Opportunity Agenda, a New York-based organization that works on racial equity issues.

Salisbury Eyes Alternative Energy Partnerships

SALISBURY — Clean and renewable energy got the spotlight this week as the Salisbury City Council heard pitches from both wind and solar providers for future partnerships.

The council plans to work with city administration to develop some defined goals and needs that can be translated into a Request for Proposals (RFP) that will be made available to energy providers.

First to share with the council was Pioneer Green Energy, an organization that specializes in wind projects. It’s currently working on The Great Bay Wind Energy Center in Somerset County, a “proposed 150-megawatt wind farm that will utilize the naturally occurring and inexhaustible coastal winds.”

Lies of the Past Are Being Drycleaned

What if the American invasion of Iraq had nothing to do with weapons of mass destruction? What if whatever weapons of mass destruction Saddam Hussein once had were sold to him in the 1980s by American arms dealers with the express permission of the U.S. government? What if he no longer had them when the U.S. invaded? What if the principal reason for invading Iraq was to depose Hussein because he tried to kill President George H.W. Bush, whose son ordered the invasion?

What if another reason for the invasion of Iraq was to enable western-allied governments to control or receive oil from Iraq? What if the Bush administration lied to the American people, Congress, the U.N. and governments of other nations in order to persuade them to support the invasion? What if the Bush administration knew all along that Hussein posed no threat to the stability of the Middle East or the freedom or security of the U.S.? What if Hussein was, in fact, a stabilizing force in the Middle East?

What if the American invasion violated the moral precepts of the Just War, precepts accepted in Judeo-Christian teaching and culture for more than 500 years, and that have underpinned international law for more than 100 years?

Labor Giant Puts Politics, Pay Over Serving Teachers

NEA spends more on lobbying than representing members

The nation’s largest teachers union spends three times as much money on politics, overhead, and union administration as it does on serving its membership, according to federal labor filings.

The National Education Association (NEA) headquarters spent nearly $45 million on “political activities” in 2013, about $500,000 more than it spent on membership services classified as “representational activities,” such as negotiating collective bargaining agreements and helping members with employment grievances. The labor giant spent an additional $90 million on overhead costs and union administration—more than double the total spent on individual members. The union’s expenses on staffing, administration, and politics accounted for about 40 percent of its total expenses for the year.

The union annually collects nearly $370 million in dues from its 3 million members, as well as its 88,000 non-member teachers, according to the filings. The NEA publicly states that all of its energies are dedicated to advancing the interests of teachers and public schools. Union membership is a key driver for achieving these goals, according to the NEA website.

Eric Holder’s Shameful Legacy on Wall Street Fraud

Right in the middle of the midterm election season, and just before Attorney General Eric Holder reportedly might step down, he made it known that the Justice Department will really really indict Wall Street executives in financial fraud cases. This time, definitely. “We expect to bring charges in the coming months,” Holder said on Wednesday. I guess the first six years of an Attorney General’s tenure is all just a wind-up.

The unlucky executives who happen to still be legally culpable when Holder needs to establish a legacy appear to include former Countrywide CEO Angelo Mozilo, who has been retired for six years (and whose case would be a civil prosecution), and individuals involved with the illegal rigging of foreign exchange trades. The forex scandal is certainly bad, but it’s indistinguishable from similar riggings to the Libor benchmark interest rate or the interest-rate swap calculation ISDAFix.

Girl, 11, shoots man attacking mother

Ex-boyfriend broke into residence, stabbed woman before being shot twice

(The Oklahoman) An 11-year-old girl was called a hero by neighbors Wednesday after she used a handgun to shoot a man who was attacking her mother.

About 4 a.m. Tuesday, Oklahoma City police were called to a home at 3308 SE 89 and found Brandy Moreno, who said she was stabbed by her ex-boyfriend, Leo Henry.

Police said Henry broke into the house and began to attack Moreno until her daughter, Jayda Milsap, 11, shot Henry twice with a handgun. Henry tried to flee from the home after being shot and was found down the street, police said.

Obama’s Praise for Radical Muslim Cleric is ‘Truly Unsettling’

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R., Texas) said that it is “truly unsettling” and “utterly appalling” that President Obama went before the United Nations on Wednesday and praised a controversial Muslim cleric who endorsed a fatwa encouraging the murder of U.S. troops in Iraq.

Obama came under scrutiny yesterday after the Washington Free Beacon reported on his commendation of controversial cleric Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah, who the president referred to as a moderate Muslim capable of helping to combat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s (ISIL or ISIS) extremist ideology.

Critics noted that the cleric endorsed a 2004 fatwa advocating for the killing of U.S. soldiers in Iraq and has called “for the death of Jews,” according to terrorism analyst Patrick Poole.

Chuck Todd: Brown Can't Put Hogan Away

Even "Meet the Press" knows Anthony Brown can't get the job done...

With only 40 days left to go in this year's election, the media is starting to turn on Anthony Brown.

Brown's vicious attack ads against me send one message loud and clear: that his campaign is struggling, and there is a narrow path to victory.

Meet the Press' Chuck Todd knows just how desperate Brown is with his most recent ads.

Earlier this week Todd said "Brown is acting like a candidate who can't put Hogan away, and in a blue state like Maryland, that tells you Brown is trying struggling. Perhaps it's O'Malley fatigue, a little bit of Democratic Party fatigue, whatever you want to call it, Brown is the incumbent here in a year of anti-incumbency and I think he's hurting here a little bit, or you wouldn't see this type of ad campaign."

The Brown campaign underestimated us in this race. We are giving them the fight for their lives. Maryland is ready for change and with your help, we are going to do just that in November.

Judge Denies DOJ Request to Delay Release of Fast and Furious Document List

U.S. District Court Judge John D. Bateshas denied a request from the Department of Justice to delay the release of a list of Operation Fast and Furious documents being protected under President Obama's assertion of executive privilege.

The list, better known as a Vaughn index, was requested through a June 2012 FOIA filing by government watchdog Judicial Watch. When DOJ didn't respond to the FOIA request in the time required by law, Judicial Watch sued in September 2012, seeking all documents DOJ and the White House are withholding from Congress under executive privilege claims. President Obama made the assertion on June 20, 2012 just moments before Attorney General Eric Holder was held in contempt. In July 2014, after two years of battling for information, Judge Bates ordered the Department of Justice to release the Vaughn Index by October 1. DOJ responded by asking for a month long delay in releasing the list with a deadline of November 3, just one day before the 2014-midterm elections. That request has been denied. A short delay was granted and DOJ must produce the Vaughn index by October 22.

NOTICE FOR K, 7TH GRADE STUDENTS NOT MEETING NEW IMMUNIZATION RULES

Wicomico schools is sending letters this week to parents/guardians of any students in kindergarten or 7th grade for whom proof has not yet been provided to the school of the student meeting Maryland’s new immunization requirements.

Maryland immunization requirements changed for the 2014-2015 school year. All Maryland students entering the 7th grade must receive a booster Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis/whooping cough) and MCV4 (meningococcal) vaccine. Maryland students entering kindergarten must receive a second dose of varicella (Chicken pox) vaccine.

The Maryland State Department of Education has coordinated efforts with the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to provide additional time for families to meet the new immunization requirements. Wicomico joined most Maryland school systems in requesting an extension of the immunization deadline to Oct. 31.

Obamacare Website Costs Top $2 Billion, Almost Triple Government Estimates

What's the opposite of government efficiency? In a double-take-instigating headline, the federal government’s Obamacare enrollment system has cost about $2.1 billion so far, according to a Bloomberg Government analysis of contracts related to the project [6]. BGOV’s analysis shows that costs for both healthcare.gov and the broader reform effort are far greater than anything publicly discussed. However, that pales into insignificance when considering health reform has cost American taxpayers $73 billion in the last four years... and counting.

As Bloomberg reports,

Spending for healthcare.gov and related programs, including at the Internal Revenue Service and other federal agencies, exceeds cost estimates provided by the Obama administration, the analysis found. The government’s most recent estimate, limited to spending on computer systems by the agency that runs the site, through February, is $834 million.

Congressman: Holder quitting to avoid scandal heat

'Stonewaller in chief ... getting out while the getting is good'

WASHINGTON –
Eric Holder is “getting out while the getting is good,” contends a Republican congressman in reaction to reports Thursday that the attorney general will resign.

“Holder knows the House is after him to produce his emails in the IRS scandal involving Lois Lerner, and he wants to get out now, in the possibility the Republicans control both the House and Senate after the November elections,” said Rep. Steve Stockman, R-Texas, in an interview with WND.

Holder announced Thursday he will step down as soon as a successor is confirmed, which means he could stay in office well into next year. One source reported the attorney general is “adamant” about leaving soon so that he doesn’t end up staying in the job during the remainder of President Obama’s second term.

According to a White House press pool report, President Obama has not decided on a successor.

Contempt of Congress case against Holder will proceed

Opponent says timing of resignation no coincidence

The contempt of Congress case against Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. — the first sitting Cabinet member ever to face such a congressional rebuke — will continue even after his resignation takes effect, but it’s unlikely he will ever face personal punishment, legal analysts said Thursday.

Mr. Holder, is expected to announce his resignation later Thursday, and Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, said the timing is not accidental: A federal judge earlier this week ruled that the Justice Department will have to begin submitting documents next month related to the botched Fast and Furious gun operation in a case brought by Judicial Watch.

Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland,
with a population of 620,961.

AG Gansler's Consumer Protection Division Issues Final Order Against Company That Scammed Veterans

Money to be returned, company ordered to pay an additional $325,000 penalty

Baltimore, MD (Sept. 25, 2014) - Maryland Attorney Douglas F. Gansler announced today that his Consumer Protection Division issued a Final Order against James E. Mack, formerly of Accokeek, and his company, Benefits U Earned, LLC. The Division found that Mack and his company violated the Maryland Consumer Protection Act by illegally taking money from veterans who sought assistance with filing benefit claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The Final Order requires the return of all payments that were taken from veterans.
"Scamming veterans who have served our country is not only illegal, it is disgraceful," said Attorney General Gansler. "Legitimate organizations that help veterans file such applications cannot and do not charge fees for the privilege."
Thus far, the Division has identified at least 118 veterans who are owed at least $73,075. The Division found that Mack and his company, after taking payments from veterans, often failed to file veterans' claims or provide them with any meaningful services. As a result, several veterans faced delays in filing their claims and often had to file on their own or seek help elsewhere. Mack and his company were also ordered to pay a civil penalty totaling $325,800.

Maryland Anglers Set New White Perch and Cobia State Records

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Service has certified a new freshwater division white perch record and an Atlantic division cobia record.
James Stiars and his record white perch
On September 5, James Stiars of Baldwin caught a 1.7-pound white perch in the Loch Raven Reservoir, breaking the previous record of 1.62 pounds set by John Williams in 2008 also in Loch Raven.
“It was my first cast of the day,” he said. “I was using a Shad Rat crank-bait, and I thought I had a largemouth bass on the line. When I saw it was a perch, I knew it could be a record.”
He dropped by the Crab Truck & Seafood Stop in Fallston on his way home to get the fish weighed on a certified scale. The following weekend he met DNR biologist Keith Lockwood at the Maryland Fishing Challenge Finale at Sandy Point State Park to have the species certified, completing the process and earning him this State record.
Stairs fishes Loch Raven two to three times a week in the warmer months. He says, “I’m sure there’s bigger perch in there.”
That same day near Ocean City, Jack Latimer of Potomac caught a 79-pound cobia about a mile and a half east of the inlet while fishing with Steve Magassy in a 16-foot skiff.

“We had been out about five miles east of Ocean City fishing for flounder and were on the way back in when we saw the fish on the surface,” Latimer said. He and Magassy simply used what they had and cast out a couple of bucktail jigs tipped with soft-plastic twister tails. “One of the fish took my lure, and that was about it,” Latimer added.
They returned to AKE Marina in Ocean City where DNR fisheries biologist Steve Doctor joined them to confirm the species and the weight. The fish was 60 inches long with a girth of 30 inches.
DNR maintains State records for sport fish in three divisions ─ Atlantic, Chesapeake and freshwater ─ and awards plaques to anglers who achieve new record catches. To report a potential state record catch, call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325. Anglers should keep their fish immersed in ice water to preserve its weight until it can be checked, which can be done at a seafood retailer or a grocery store with a certified scale.
Fish caught from privately-owned, fee-fishing waters are not eligible for record consideration.
The Maryland State Record application and a list of records are located on the DNR Fisheries website

Victim of fox attack undergoing rabies shots: ‘The pain is more than you could ever imagine’

Virginia Beach, Va. – For Cathy Higginbotham, returning to the West Neck community where she works isn’t easy after what happened to her Friday night.

“My heart races just coming in here,” she told NewsChannel 3.

It was around 7:40 p.m. She had just finished cleaning one of the condos on Crescent Moon Ct. when a fox jumped out from underneath her truck and bit her foot.

“All I was doing was opening it [the truck] up and putting my vacuum in. I pulled my foot out and I was shaking it like this and it was hanging off.”
