NATIONAL DRUG TAKE BACK DAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2014

LET TROOPERS DISPOSE OF UNWANTED PRESCRIPTIONS DRUGS
NATIONAL DRUG TAKE BACK DAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2014

(Pikesville, MD) – The Maryland State Police in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration are asking citizens dispose of unwanted prescription drugs during the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, September 27, 2014 from 10:00 am to 2:00 p.m. at state police barracks.

State police barracks throughout Maryland will be participating in the National Drug Take Back Day. Each barrack will act as a collection station giving citizens an opportunity to dispose of all unwanted and unused prescription drugs. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

Second only to marijuana, non-medical prescription drugs are the most commonly used drug in the country. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs are finding an unlimited supply in their family’s medicine cabinet.

Locally during the last initiative in April 2014, troopers collected over 1,800 pounds of prescription drugs. Nationally, 780,000 pounds (390 tons) of prescription medications were collected from members of the public. When added to the collections from the previous Take-Back events, more than 4.1 million pounds (2,090 tons) of prescription medications have been removed from circulation.

A man arrives at the gates of heaven

St. Peter looks through his book and tells him "I don't see any reason why we should let you in. You don't seem to have done anything worthy in your life."

The guy replies: "What about the time I was driving and saw a woman with a flat tire beside the road? A bunch of bikers had surrounded her and were giving her a hard time. I stopped and got out; they turned on me so I grabbed a tire iron and told them to back off."

St. Peter: "You really did that? When did this happen?"

The guy: "About 5 minutes ago"

Ferguson: Cameras Are Gone, Stupidity Remains

Remember Ferguson, Missouri? Probably a little. But, like the fact that Russian supported goons shot down a commercial airliner over Ukraine, you probably haven’t thought about it in a while. And with good cause – it had nothing to do with you.

The events in Ferguson didn’t involve anyone you knew, so you’ve moved on. Actually, the media moved on, and since they were the ones who manufactured the outrage, them being gone means there’s little left to fan those flames.

But those flames still smolder at a “memorial” to Michael Brown at the spot he was shot in the form of candles. The “memorial” is nothing more than a pile of signs and stuff animals, but they’ve become commonplace anytime anyone dies in a shooting, car accident, or seemingly anywhere outside of a hospital.

Lewes Man Charged with 5th Offense DUI after Attempting to Flee from Troopers

Dover, DE – State Troopers have arrested a 34 year old Lewes man for his fifth offense DUI after he attempted to flee from a traffic stop.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:10 p.m. Tuesday September 23, 2014 when an anonymous call to the Kent County Emergency Operations Center (9-1-1) reported a possible drunk driver in the area of Royal Grant Development. Troopers responded to the area of Royal Grant Way and located a black BMW parked in the roadway with a male subject slumped over the wheel as if he was asleep. The driver awoke when a trooper opened the door to the car to check on his well-being and he immediately accelerated away in the vehicle at a high rate of speed. Troopers began pursuing the BMW, with emergency equipment activated, and observed it turn onto Crown Circle where it backed into a private driveway and came to a stop. Troopers then began issuing verbal commands to the operator to shut the vehicle off, but he again accelerated forward almost striking a trooper standing outside his patrol vehicle before the BMW struck the front of a fully marked police car and continued back onto Crown Circle. The suspect then drove southbound before coming to a stop a few houses down and pulled into another private driveway where he exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Troopers initiated a foot pursuit and deployed a divisionally issued Taser (Electronic Control Device) taking him into custody without further incident.

Steven M. Williams, 34 of Lewes, was transported back to Troop 3 where a DUI investigation ensued and he was subsequently charged with his 5th Offense Driving Under the Influence (previous convictions of 08/31/01, 10/28/01, 01/16/04, and 12/12/10), Resisting Arrest with Force, two counts of Disregarding a Police Officer’s Signal, Reckless Endangering 2nd, two counts of Criminal Mischief, and Reckless Driving. He was arraigned at JP2 and committed to James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on $15,200.00 cash bond.

Liberals employ 'Bush did it too' defense for Obama's latte salute ...and his war

But wait. Wasn't Bush 'the worst President in the history of the United States?'

George W. Bush was, without question, the worst President in the history of the United States. At least, that's what liberals tell us. He was a war monger who sacrificed lives for oil, a racist who wanted New Orleans to drown, a scheming mastermind who plotted the destruction of the World Trade Center, and a bumbling imbecile who couldn't put two words together without showing his absolute stupidity.

They never explain how such an idiot was also a Machiavellian genius, but hey. No one says they make much sense.

Despite their hatred of Bush, he's their go-to whenever they need to defend the current Commander in Chief. "Bush did it too" is their new mantra, replacing the outdated and unsubstantiated "it's Bush's fault." Apparently, if Bush did it, it's ok for Obama to do it too.

ANNAPOLIS, MD – September 24, 2014 - On Thursday, September 25, gubernatorial candidate Larry Hogan will hold a news conference to outline a potential pay-to-play scheme related to state contractors and donations to the Democratic Governors Association. At the noon event, Hogan will reveal detailed research which shows millions of dollars in contributions flowing into the DGA shortly before or after these donors have received lucrative state contracts.

Costs Outweigh The Benefits

The FAA's signature air traffic system upgrade is failing to gain altitude. An audit by the Transportation Department's inspector general finds, the public costs now outweigh the benefits by nearly $600 million. The IG looked into the satellite navigation portion of what the FAA calls the Next Generation Air Transportation System. FAA has completed 624 towers of the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast, or ADSB. But few airlines are using it, and the IG says full use is likely to be years away. That's because of incomplete requirements and the cost associated with re-equipping planes. ADSB will eventually let aircraft navigate by GPS instead of ground-based radar.

GOVERNOR O’MALLEY AND LT. GOVERNOR BROWN ANNOUNCE START OF $50 MILLION US 301 / MD 304 INTERCHANGE PROJECT IN QUEEN ANNE’S COUNTY

Transportation Act Delivers Key $50 Million Eastern Shore Safety Project; Local Student-Led Advocacy Group Rallied Support For New Overpass

CENTREVILLE, Md. (September 23, 2014) -- Delivering on their commitment to enhance traffic safety and meet the transportation needs of communities across the Eastern Shore, Governor Martin O’Malley and Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown today announced the start of work to construct a new interchange along US 301 (Blue Star Memorial Highway) at MD 304 (Ruthsburg Road) to replace the existing intersection. The $49.9 million safety project was Queen Anne’s County’s top transportation priority and was made possible thanks to funding from the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013. To celebrate the start of work, Transportation Secretary James T. Smith, Jr.; State Highway Administration (SHA) Administrator Melinda Peters; state and local elected officials; and representatives from the advocacy group Support Overpass 4 Students (SO4S) participated in a groundbreaking ceremony at the busy US 301 / MD 304 intersection.

“Thanks to the passage of the Transportation Act, we are investing more than ever to put people to work building roads, bridges and priority projects like this interchange,” said Governor O’Malley. “Together, with communities like Centreville and organizations like Support Overpass 4 Students, we’ll continue to do the things that work to create jobs, build and restore a 21st Century transportation network, and ensure our quality of life by keeping more families safe on our roads.”

Mysterious Child Virus Has Spread to More Than Half of US States

A respiratory illness is striking children in more than half the United States with symptoms varying in seriousness from mild colds to serious breathing problems, the New York Post reported.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 175 people across 27 states have been diagnosed with enterovirus since mid-August. In its mildest form, the illness consists of a fever, sneezing, and coughing, but the strain is worse than the common cold.

Severe cases are characterized by difficulty breathing and also wheezing and can lead to hospitalization, the Post reported.

Infants, teens, and children are at the highest risk of infection and the media has already reported numerous examples across the country.

The most recent case was diagnosed Tuesday in Massachusetts where an eight-year-old girl with a history of asthma was treated at Boston Children's Hospital.

"We treated her in our unit as she was relatively ill at the time, but has done terrifically well and is home," Dr. Michael Agus told the Post. "I just spoke with her mother and she's doing terrifically well at home."

Poll: Support for Gay marriage drops 5 pts

Grand Haven Tribune reports a survey released Monday from the Pew Research Center indicates American support for same-sex marriage could be leveling off after several years of dramatic growth in acceptance of equal rights for gays and lesbians. The study’s authors caution it’s too soon to draw any definitive conclusions. But the new poll released Monday found a 5 percentage point drop since February, from 54 percent to 49 percent, in Americans who want legal recognition for same-sex relationships. The percentage of those opposed increased during that same period, from 39 percent in February to 41 percent last month.

The poll of 2,002 adults, conducted Sept. 2-9, has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

“Since we’ve seen this upward trend for so long, we’re cautious because it’s too early to say what this means for long-term trends,” said Jessica Martinez, a researcher in Pew’s Religion and Public Life Project. “As we continue to ask this question in other surveys, we’ll keep an eye on where this moves.”

Lawmakers take in $608 per hour for the time they work in DC

Congress will be in session for only eight days during a 102-day span between Aug. 1 and Nov. 12, when lawmakers are set to return for a lame-duck session after the elections.

Because the annual salary for members of the House is $174,000, their hourly wage for those eight days amounts to $608 per hour, presuming 10-hour workdays.

That’s several times the hourly compensation of anesthesiologists, one of the highest-earning professions, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, at $113 an hour on average.

Liberal activist Ralph Nader worked out the eye-popping calculation in an angry letter he sent to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Monday.

Did You See This Today On Route 50 And Wonder What Was Going On?

The Dispatch
Did you see this today on Route 50 and wonder what was going on? Here's the answer ...
Chesapeake Utilities and Sandpiper Energy spokesman Jim Moore explained to News Editor Shawn Soper the burning torches were part of the ongoing conversion effort to convert the existing propane gas lines around the northern end of the county to natural gas. Moore explained the gas lines along that section of Route 50 were shut off and the torches were burning off the remainder of the propane still in the lines.
“It moving along pretty well,” he said. “We got Berlin done and now we’re moving into the West Ocean City area. It will be done in phases and this area where the flames could be seen on Wednesday is part of the next phase.”

Is It Ever OK To Spank?

The image of Adrian Peterson’s son’s legs has ignited a welcome cultural conversation. This is unusual. Most of these contrived “conversations” are efforts to take one headline and shoehorn it into a narrative that liberals want to advance, usually about race and racism. Those “conversations” are never truthful.

But the discussion of a 4-year-old boy’s wounds has elicited some brutally honest commentary.

Writing for CNN, Steven Holmes blasted what he regards as excessive tolerance for spanking and child abuse in the black community. He dispatches the “I was whipped and I turned out all right” excuse. Holmes cites the abundant research showing that “spanking inhibits the learning process. … It leads to anger, depression, violence and alcohol and drug abuse. It breeds hostility toward authority … and spawns other antisocial behaviors.” Physical punishment, he continues, “is associated with legions of sullen, angry, violence-prone boys.”

Peterson advanced the “mean streets” argument. “I could have been one of those kids that was lost in the streets without the discipline instilled in me by my parents.” Holmes replies: “That may have been true for Peterson. But what also could be true is that the streets may not have been so mean if they were not populated by so many kids who are angry at the world because, among other things, they were spanked.”

Even Libs Say No to Hillary in 2016

Last week, Hillary Clinton returned to Iowa for the first time since her 2008 presidential campaign loss, saying, “I’m back.” She continued: “It’s true. I’ve been thinking about it,” referring to another run in 2016. But the truth is that even many of her esteemed liberal cronies think it’s a bad idea.

I know that billionaire buddies such as Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton, philanthropist Jon Stryker and progressive globalist George Soros were among 32 other wealthy elites who helped the former first lady raise over $4 million last year for the “Ready for Hillary” super PAC. However, outside of her super-rich comrades — who have clear self-invested interests in resurrecting and ensuring a Clinton dynasty — hosts of other liberals are petrified of the prospect of her becoming president.

Most expect us conservatives to oppose the 2016 presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton, but listen to the liberals themselves. They’ve already done our bidding.

Let me give you 10 — among many other — liberal cases against Clinton, in their own words, including one from Clinton herself.

DNR Awards Volunteer Fire Assistance Grants to 39 Departments

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service is awarding Volunteer Fire Assistance grants to 39 volunteer fire departments in 15 Maryland counties this year. DNR will grant approximately $90,000 to help provide the resources for these men and women to better fight wildfires in rural communities.

“With Volunteer Fire Assistance Grants we are able to help afford these hardworking men and women the tools and safety equipment to enhance response efforts,” said DNR State Fire Supervisor Monte Mitchell. “This funding helps to protect our natural resources, homes and property, and the lives of these selfless workers and our citizens.”

This year’s grants will help provide wildland personal protective gear, Class A foam and upgraded radio communications equipment. The funds will also go toward supplying departments with equipment for brush trucks and fire engines and other tools to enhance wildfire suppression, and replacing small diameter fire hose.

2 Standards of Justice: DOJ Doesn’t Punish Crime Among Its Ranks

Allows its own officials to get away with all sorts of appalling crimes and transgressions

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is responsible for enforcing the law, providing federal leadership in preventing crime and punishing those guilty of illegal behavior yet it allows its own officials to get away with all sorts of appalling crimes and transgressions.

As if this weren’t bad enough, the DOJ also protects its perpetrators, covering up their name and allowing them to keep their lucrative government jobs. Even the agency watchdog, which is charged with rooting out corruption, conceals crucial information about unscrupulous DOJ officials, including those in high-ranking positions. Now a national newspaper chain offers insight into this astounding cover-up scheme with documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), a federal law often used by Judicial Watch to expose government corruption.

The records don’t include names, but they do reveal a “startling array” of transgressions and misconduct in which DOJ officials nevertheless escaped prosecution or firing. It’s like the fox guarding the henhouse because the DOJ is responsible for prosecuting corruption in the public sector. This includes government agencies and elected officials at most levels. The records show that dozens of DOJ officials, ranging from FBI special agents and prison wardens to high-level federal prosecutors, have faced no consequences for criminal behavior or serious misconduct.

The Decline & Fall Of Europe: French Farmers Set Tax Office On Fire

French vegetable farmer have set a tax office and a building on fire destroying the government facility which was the symbol of the increasing administrative burden and sanctions that is killing farming. Hundreds of tractors and trailers of the farmers converged on Friday evening before the building of the Agricultural Social Insurance (MSA) in the town of Morlaix (Brittany). There they dumped unsold potatoes and artichokes before the MSA-building and added pallets and tires setting the entire lot on fire. Thereafter, the farmers moved on to the tax office set that on fire as well. The protests also took place in numerous other places as well, however, only these two government buildings were totally destroyed.

The association of vegetable farmers had announced the protest action on Friday. The background is that for years the bureaucracy for farmers have magnified the economic decline and their plight with constant new regulation of everything. The economic situation of farming in Europe has been seriously pushed too far with the US sanctions against Russia. The agricultural crisis caused by Obama is increasingly deteriorating with far too many farmers throughout Europe losing everything.

Yet Another Problem: Prescribed Statins Linked to Thyroid Cancer

Study find increased risk of thyroid cancer in women

Many prescriptions drugs can cause alternate problems when trying to cure the original issue – a huge, well-known issue of prescription drugs. Now, a new study published in the journal Clinical Epidemiology adds to this notion, finding that statins, commonly prescribed to lower cholesterol, are associated with an increased risk of thyroid cancer in women.

Researchers suggest that statins, when in the presence of a female dominant hormone called – a form of estrogen, become ineffective at exhibiting long term ‘cancer-protective properties’ as studies suggest they do. In fact, the drugs are linked to an increased chance of thyroid cancer in women.

Yet another study published in the same journal suggests that the problem lies in the immunosuppressive properties of the statin drugs themselves. There are at least 25 different immuno-toxic properties of statins. You can view them all listed under the ‘Adverse Pharmacological Actions’ here.

The stain industry is heavily invested in promoting their drugs. A single pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, has reported sales of $12.4 billion just for statins. So you can understand why they would not want this news to become widely spread, especially since they have promoted statins as anti-cancer agents.

'You can either make history or be vilified by it'

Leo DiCaprio lectures UN on climate change (but no mention of his four homes, private jets and renting the FIFTH biggest yacht in the world from an OIL billionaire)

With his speech in front of the United Nations today, Leonardo DiCaprio cemented his reputation as one of the world's highest-profile activists on climate change.

'You can make history ...or be vilified by it,' he dramatically told world leaders.

After marching with 400,000 others on the streets of New York this weekend to demand tough regulations to cut the amount of CO2 being pumped into the air, DiCaprio opened a UN climate change summit by urging the world to crack down on polluters and 'put a price tag on carbon emissions.'

But the 39-year-old Hollywood star's own jetset lifestyle reveals a double-standard on the issue of climate change.

In his speech to the UN, he said: 'This disaster has grown beyond the choices that individuals make.'

MailOnline can report that DiCaprio took at least 20 trips across the nation and around the world this year alone - including numerous flights from New York to Los Angeles and back, a ski vacation to the French Alps, another vacation to the French Riviera, flights to London and Tokoyo to promote his film Wolf of Wall Street, two trips to Miami and trip to Brazil to watch the World Cup.

America's Politicians Earn $608 Per Hour

On the surface, earning $174,000 per year, while putting one solidly in the top 10% of all US earners, does not sound like much. This happens to be the 2014 allocated wage of America's elected political representatives, the members of the House of Representatives. And indeed, in the grand scheme of things it isn't much... until one considers that in the 102-day period between August 1 and November 12, this wage will be "earned" for just working a paltry 8 days, which, presuming 10 hour workdays, amounts to a whopping $608 per hour, on par with what some of America's most prominent lawyers earn. It is also several times the hourly compensation of anesthesiologists, one of the highest-earning professions, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, at $113 an hour on average.

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor O’Malley today highlighted the many ways Marylanders can register to vote and the importance of participating in the 2014 elections in Maryland. The deadline to register to vote for the 2014 elections is Tuesday, October 14, 2014.

“Government works best when more people participate at the ballot box,” said Gov. O’Malley. “We’re doing more, not less, to give young people, the mentally disabled, our military, and so many others the opportunity to make their voices heard in their communities, and exercise what Dr. Martin Luther King called, ‘civil right number one’ — the right to vote.”

Over the last seven years, the O’Malley-Brown Administration has taken action to expand access to voting, and to make the process simple and easy for all eligible voters in the State of Maryland. Governor O’Malley proposed and signed legislation allowing for same-day registration in the 2016 elections. In 2011, he signed legislation establishing online voter registration, and since implementation, the system has registered over 70,000 voters. During the 2012 election cycle, 108,000 Marylanders used the system to register or modify their voter registration.

Chicago: 2 dead, 31 wounded in weekend shootings

Teen tells police: 'Please don't let me die'

(CHICAGO TRIBUNE)
Two teens were shot to death and at least 13 other people, including a 12-year-old boy, were wounded in shootings between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

The most recent shooting was a homicide that happened about 4:10 a.m. Saturday in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, and the boy killed was the seventh person shot in that area in the West Garfield Park and Lawndale neighborhoods on the West Side.

The 16-year-old boy, Cortez Rivers, was pronounced dead at 4:55 a.m. Saturday at Loretto Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Police and the medical examiner’s office listed the address where he was shot as the 4000 block of West Jackson Boulevard.

CROW BEHAVIOR....

Researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority found over 200 dead crows near greater Boston recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu.

A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT the Avian Flu.
The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts.

However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colors & types of paints appeared on the bird's beaks and claws.
By analyzing these paint residues it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car.

MTA then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills.

The Ornithological Behaviorist very quickly concluded the cause:
When crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger.

They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout "Cah", not a single one could shout "Truck."

Prince George’s County seeks to ban hourly hotel rentals

Prince George’s County lawmakers are seeking to crack down on human trafficking in the county by banning hourly rentals of hotel rooms.

County Council member Karen R. Toles plans to introduce legislation to that effect Tuesday as well as a separate bill that would require hotel operators to provide training to employees on how to identify human trafficking activities and victims.

A county working group charged with studying and combating the problem has been able to identify about 130 cases of human trafficking in the county since 2013, said Michael Lyles, chairman of the Prince George’s County Human Trafficking Task Force.

2nd Amendment: Original Meaning and Purpose

When the Constitution was signed on September 17, 1789, federalists claimed the new government would only have limited powers expressly delegated to it. This wasn’t enough for anti-federalists like George Mason, who wanted explicit guarantees to certain rights in order to prevent any potential encroachment by the federal government.

One of them was the right to keep and bear arms. Mason wrote:

“A well-regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the proper, natural, and safe defence of a free State”

The Founding Fathers, having just broken away from Great Britain, understood the new federal government they were ratifying might one day become just as tyrannical. If it had the authority to control citizen access to firearms, then it could disarm them, just as the British attempted to do. This would make any attempts to restore liberties futile.

The Second Amendment was specifically included in the Bill of Rights to prevent this.

Boehner Parties in the Hamptons, Tells Joy Behar: 'I Am Obama's Best Friend'

House Speaker John Boehner put comedienne Joy Behar in a headlock this weekend while in the Hamptons campaigning for Republican Lee Zeldin, telling the liberal former co-host of The View, “I am Obama’s best friend."

Behar ran into Boehner in a restaurant--Almond Restaurant in East Hampton--and told the Speaker to “stop obstructing President Obama” as she “tackled” him, according to theNew York Post.

“Liberal comedienne and talk show host Behar tackled Boehner--whom she dubbed 'the Weeper of the House' after his waterworks in his famous ’60 Minutes’ interview--at Almond Restaurant in East Hampton on Saturday,” the Post’s Emily Smith wrote. “Boehner--who was out in the Hamptons to campaign against Long Island Democratic Rep. Tim Bishop and attended a fundraiser for Lee Zeldin at the home of developer Joe Farrell--then jokingly put Behar in a headlock. The moment was captured in a photo which appeared in Monday’s Page Six.”

Exercise Civil Right Number One

Today is National Voter Registration Day, an opportunity remind every eligible Marylander across the state – Republican, Democrat, Independent, whatever your affiliation – to register to vote by Tuesday, October 14, in time for the November 4 general election.

Dr. Martin Luther King called the right to vote, “civil right number one.” As he said, voting – “is more than a badge of citizenship and dignity – it is an effective tool for change… and the foundation-stone for political action.”

We’re committed in Maryland to doing what works – and government works best when more people participate at the ballot box.

That’s why here in Maryland, in contrast to many other states, we’ve expanded access to the polls. We’ve enabled on-site early voting, expanded our online voter registration services, and allowed young Marylanders to register before their 18th birthday as long as the general election falls after it. And beginning in 2016, we’ll have same-day registration.

We’ve done more, not less to secure voting rights for the mentally disabled, and more, not less to give our military men and women every opportunity to have their vote counted, no matter where they may be stationed.

These are common sense reforms that knock down more of the obstacles that still keep people away from the polls on Election Day.

I hope more Marylanders everywhere, regardless of party affiliation, will exercise their right to vote this November 4th.

You can register online or in person at your local or State Board of Elections, as well as at public colleges and universities and Motor Vehicle Administration offices. For a complete listing of voter registration locations and information on how to register quickly and easily, visit elections.maryland.gov.

Coke And Pepsi Concede That Maybe Soda Is Bad For You

In an ambitious pledge announced on Tuesday, the U.S. soda industry is committing to cut America's calorie intake from beverages by 20 percent over the coming decade. As part of the agreement, which was reached by the American Beverage Association and Alliance for a Healthier Generation, Coca-Cola, Pepsi Co., and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group Inc. will promote smaller portions as well as zero and low calorie offerings, and provide calorie counts on vending machines, soda fountains, and retail coolers.

"This is the single-largest voluntary effort by an industry to help fight obesity and leverages our companies’ greatest strengths in marketing, innovation and distribution," Susan K. Neely, president and chief executive of the American Beverage Association, said in a statement. "This initiative will help transform the beverage landscape in America."

In many ways, the soda industry's commitment is, at the same time, a concession.

Weight Loss Company Sues Website For Posting Customer Complaints

While state and federal lawmakers look for ways to outlaw retail terms of sale that penalize customers who publicly complain about a transaction, one diet supplement company is going after an online complaint site just because it allowed customers to post negative reviews in violation of the supplement company’s non-disparagement clause.

In general, the Communications Decency Act shields operators of online forums from being held liable for things posted by users. But a lawsuit [PDF] filed last month in a Florida state court [and subsequently relocated to a U.S. District Court] claims that one complaint-oriented website goes beyond merely allowing users to post their stories.

According to the complaint, the site walks users through the process of posting a complaint, requiring that they fill in certain fields and mandating minimum lengths for each complaint.

Police Officers Finish Delivering Order After Pizza Hut Driver Is Injured In Car Crash

It’s the joke that must be made — Portland Police not only protect, but they serve… pizza. Because after a Pizza Hut delivery driver was injured in a car crash, the cops made a special effort to ensure that his customers didn’t go hungry, and delivered up the pizza in his stead.

The driver was involved in a collision on Sept. 1 and was hurt (but is now doing better) reports KOIN, so two officers at the scene picked up the torch and went with it.

Time Magazine - Send 160 Editorial Jobs out of US?

Around 160 editorial jobs from Time in the US could be sent overseas. The Newspaper Guild of New York says the company wants the ability to outsource that number of editorial jobs abroad.

The Guild has been locked in an 18-month-long contract negotiation with America’s largest magazine publisher, owner of People,Sports Illustrated and InStyle, among others, Adage reports.

Newspaper Guild President Bill O'Meara said in a statement that Time Inc.'s proposal to hollow out its own company “is simply not acceptable."

He went on, "Management wants the ability to send 160 editorial jobs overseas, which would be a massive blow to some of the nation's most important and respected magazines."

A Time Inc. spokesman declined to comment to AdAge.

Student Homelessness Hits Another Record High

A growing number of students don't have homes to return to once classes are out.

Approximately 1.3 million students enrolled in U.S. public preschools, elementary schools, middle schools and high schools schools were homeless during the 2012-13 school year.

That's up 8% from the prior year, and the highest number on record, according to the National Center for Homeless Education, funded by the Department of Education.

A lack of affordable housing is a big reason, forcing many families to live in the streets, shelters, motels or to double up with other families, said Jeremy Rosen, director of advocacy at the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty.

"This problem continues to get worse because in terms of government programs and support for homelessness, budgets have been cut in recent years, and there's less affordable housing available," said Rosen.

Number of ObamaCare enrollees appears to be dropping

President Obama’s claim last spring that 8 million people had enrolled in ObamaCare recently got a significant downgrade from the head of the agency overseeing the plan.

Marilyn Tavenner, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, told a congressional committee that "as of August 15, this year, we have 7.3 million Americans enrolled in Health Insurance Marketplace coverage and these are individuals who paid their premiums."

A key part of her statement was Tavenner's reference to those who paid, because just signing up isn't enough to be counted as enrolled.

As Doug Holtz-Eakin, former director of the Congressional Budget Office, explained, "it’s not enough to sign up. You have to sign up and pay on a regular basis to really be enrolled."

'We need boots on ground to beat ISIS': Tony Blair warns British troops may have to return to Iraq and says terror group in not a 'weird cult'

British troops may have to return to Iraq to fight Islamic fanatics and the UK will have to accept a ‘willingness to take casualties’, Tony Blair warns today.

The former prime minister calls for boots on the ground to take the fight to Islamic State (IS) terrorists who have seized control of large swathes of Iraq and Syria.

In a 6,500-word essay on his website, Mr Blair acknowledges that there is ‘no appetite’ among the public for sending British troops back to Iraq following his own military forays in the region.
