A message from Salisbury University President Charles A. Wight

Today, the Wicomico County State’s Attorney’s Office announced that Jerome Kevin Jackson, 54, of Princess Anne, MD, has signed an intention to enter a guilty plea of maliciously defacing property while demonstrating racial animosity in connection with the racist, misogynistic and threatening vandalism discovered on campus during the 2019-20 academic year, under Maryland’s hate crime statute. The plea includes a recommendation for 18 months of jail time plus restitution for the remediation of property damage. Please visit www.facebook.com/pg/wcsao/posts for more information.

Jackson has no known connections to campus. He has accepted responsibility for each of the vandalism incidents in Fulton and Henson Science halls in October and November 2019, and February 2020. This brings the Salisbury University Police Department’s (SUPD) investigation into those incidents to a close.

I commend the SUPD for its diligence in the investigation, which included combing through an enormous amount of evidence and information. I also thank our students, faculty, staff, alumni and other constituents for their patience and understanding during the investigation. As promised, the University did not take these incidents lightly.

I am grateful to the allied law enforcement agencies that offered assistance with the case. I also thank Wicomico County State’s Attorney Jamie Dykes and her staff, who were instrumental in bringing the case to resolution.

Hate and discrimination have no place on this campus, and neither do ignorance or apathy as they relate to these issues. These incidents were targeted, but they affect us all. SU’s campus culture is all of our responsibility, and throughout this difficult time, our students, faculty, staff, alumni and community supporters have made one thing very clear: SU unites and stands together.

I look forward to continuing to work with our shared governance groups and others as we pave the way for a better SU.

    1. It’s on open campus smart guy! What do you suggest, that all middle aged black men walking around campus be stopped in the name of “security” because of the actions of one person?

    2. 11:16, do you have any suggestions or just remarks. I can see it now, stop a black cat and be sued and rightly so. The public would treat it as bad as a neck knee. So, come on and tell them and us readers how it should have be done. Hell, I went to classes there and saw many walking among us that I wouldn’t want to sit next to in class, although some were in class. You don’t control who walks the streets. Sorry to get simple, but your statement hit a cord. Lol

  3. I might have missed it but in all this but I still haven't seen a statement as to why he did this. If I was a Judge I wouldn't accept the plea until he explained to my satisfaction why he did this.

  4. If ignorance and apathy towards the incident shouldn't be tolerated neither should assumptions that it's white people automatically, and where is the apology for that?
Of course we all know that won't be forthcoming. Maybe next year when this happens again, because I'm sure it will, perhaps wait and hold all the overused rhetoric for when the person is caught.
But then what will the racebaiters use as ammo? It won't matter to them that everytime this has happened it was poc.... they'll just keep blaming everything on white racism.
Where is the community now to condemn this man? If he were white they'd be tearing the city up like everywhere else. Any excuse works, funny how this doesn't.

    1. I agree with you, the last time this happened on campus it was perpetrated by African-American students drawing racist graffiti on a dry a race board in the library. The college went nuts the black student union immediately cried racism and all white people on campus were again labeled as racist.
These incidents have cost the college hundreds of thousands of dollars in new administrative positions, race sensitivity training and created a hostile work environment for white employees.
As an alumni I stopped my annual giving after the first incident Based on the University’s response. after this one I have confirmed my support of the university is over.
Sorry Chuck but us white folks are tired of being labeled racist before any investigation is complete. I also wish your response would’ve included an apology for overreacting without knowing the facts.

Don't be stupid if at all possible All visitors should be questioned and be made to sign in. Some people like myself actually value all lives and not just a few who happen to be killed by the right person Of course this wasn't an act of murder but the fact that anyone can roam around is disturbing to those who actually love our children Animals are more protective of their young then the parents who send their own to this school.

    1. Don’t be stupid? Your a fool! If you think it’s stupid, context the president of the university, contact the chancellor. This is their decisions. So maybe the military will come in and do background checks on everyone to walk an open campus? Maybe they should do this at all private and public business where people shop with their families? Maybe that’ll stop crime that you ask everyone why they are walking on an open campus of state property and that this will make them not commit crime, because they got questioned and had to sign in for walking on state property?

If you really value all lives, you’d realize that a sign in sheet and questions, isn’t a magic bubble that’ll protect people. Go back to your animals, they need to pee

That's terrible What in the heck kind of parent would ever send their child off to a place like that much less pay for them to go to where they can be sitting ducks if something were to happen. I said before I will say it again-Animals are more protective of their young then the parents who send their child to such a place.

Because they are an "open campus" In other words security and taking the student safety seriously isn't a priority.

  14. So glad to see that the new SU President was willing to see this through to the end. The last President swept this stuff under the rug. Finally a President that walks he walk.

  15. Okay, I agree with SU president that hate, discrimination, ignorance, and apathy have no place in the SU community.
Does this mean that dumb-ass jumping to conclusions has a place in the SU community?
Is there a place for intellectual honesty at SU? The weasel statement of the SU president tells me that there is no intellectual honesty at SU.
The academic crowd wants to place blame for all problems on systemic white racism, which is why they screwed up their initial response to this crime.
The intellectual laziness of the SU leadership is the result of ignorance and apathy, which is why SU's non-apology to the white community is total BS.

  16. It would be a polite thing to see more of our local blacks speak out against the actions of this person. Also the few 100 "woke" students who showed up at the Town Hall to express their outrage when the graffiti appeared to also show some concern that it was a hoax.
It's not like we want you to kneel to us or anything. We are real Christians who know you kneel before no one but God. Keep on taking that knee. Keep on promoting it. Keep on idolizing kapernic and the kneelers God sees.

  17. Easy now folks. Walking around campus is fine, but to get into lecture halls AND dorms normally requires key (id card) access.

Cafeteria's are open to the public at most colleges....

    Just sayin....

    1. This page also said it was Kirkland Hall. His wife is the one with the job at SU. Either someone convinced this guy to take the fall for Kirkland Hall or this page put his name out there without knowing the facts. Apparently who runs this page said they had seen the video and could tell it was Kirkland Hall. Maybe this page could get a copy of the video for us all.

    1. Your point? Your are embarrassing! So because society is stupid and blames guns because of the actions of a person who uses the gun to commit murder, your maybe saying we stop all black males with sharpies? Or blame the sharpie?

    2. So, you say “your an idiot”? It’s “you’re an idiot”. “You’re” is the contraction for “you are”. Before calling someone an “idiot” maybe you should learn proper grammar. Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up. Thank you for showing us who truly is the idiot.

  24. This wright is such a piece of crap. So discrimination has no place on the campus? But racial hoaxes do? That is what he is saying. To not have the guts or the decency to say racial hoaxes have no place either shows his colors and they are those of a piece of crap

  25. The efforts to hush this up only cause more speculation, gossip, and I'll will. Who were they trying to protect by being so careful not to identify this guy before he was sentenced?

  26. Okay everyone time to move on. We are not them. The only place we dwell is in the House of the Lord. We don't dwell on the past whether it be yesterday or 150 years ago. Our hearts are pure This wasn't from us as we had already known. Their anger will not become our anger. Anger accomplishes nothing productive. It ruins what could have become productive.
Just for the record "then" has no race, ethnicity or religion. If you are one of "them" you know who you are.

  35. Wright owes all white parents and students an apology for his assumption from the very beginning and public pronouncement that the perp was white. The character and reputation of white parents and students have been impugned. This also demonstrates Wright’s own inherent racism and bigotry to jump to that conclusion without any factual basis whatsoever. He should apologize and resign. Pathetic..
