Newark NJ Water Scandal Catches Up To 2020 Democrat Candidate Cory Booker

2020 Democratic candidate Cory Booker is making the environment one of the central pillars of his campaign.

But when he was the mayor of Newark, New Jersey, he was at the center of a water scandal that is coming back to haunt him.

ABC News reports:
For Cory Booker, water crisis awakens ghosts of past Newark water scandal

As a presidential candidate, Cory Booker has made environmental protections a central tenet of his social justice platform. As a United States senator, he emerged as a leading voice on the front lines of safe water for urban-dwellers.

But a growing water quality crisis gripping Newark, New Jersey, is bringing fresh attention and scrutiny of Booker’s own record when he was that city’s mayor — at a time when the water system was marred by scandal.

Woman flees America to live in a cheap Mexican beach town

Janet Blaser knows a thing or two about reinvention.

Once a food and restaurant writer in Santa Cruz, Calif., the now-63-year-old struggled to find work roughly a decade ago as journalism increasingly went online. She lost one beloved job, got her hours cut at another, and ended up working odd jobs, including one in human resources at an amusement park.

With little savings and a low salary, the single mother of three struggled — even as she watched friends buy million-dollar homes and pricey cars. “I constantly felt like I wasn’t ‘enough’ and didn’t have ‘enough,’” she writes in her new book “Why We Left,” which profiles 27 expats in Mexico.

The Role of Gun Control in Dictatorship

President Trump is accused on a minute-by-minute basis of being a tyrant, but his accusers remain free. Nothing has been taken from them, not their property nor their personal liberty. Their rights remain intact in every respect. They can speak without fear of retribution. They can assemble without fear of arrest. They can say and do the most vile and corrupt things, knowing that because the president is not a tyrant, nothing will be done to them for their crusade to erode and destroy our current social and political systems.

While the president correctly identifies the propagandists in the leftist media as philosophical enemies of the people they work every day to conquer, he doesn’t announce any plans to unilaterally cancel or rescind their rights. He does not threaten to make their words and intentions illegal. He doesn’t threaten to trample the Bill of Rights because they hate him and the country he works to preserve and protect, often from them. He has never once hinted at criminalizing their political opposition, or their open warfare on the Constitution and every civil protection enjoyed by Americans who refuse to subscribe to despotism.

American Workers Are Winning

“The U.S. economy has added millions of jobs, and even long-neglected sectors like manufacturing are having a resurgence,” Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross writes in Fox Business. Economic health has rebounded from the lows of the Obama Administration.

“Among the continuous good economic news, wage growth for America’s workers has taken center stage. For the first time since 2009, year over year nominal hourly wage growth met or surpassed 3 percent under the Trump Administration.”

With inflation in check, “not only are wages growing but the slow growth in consumer prices means that American workers’ dollars are going farther.”

Limbaugh: ‘I Think Trump Is Already Reelected’

Monday on his nationally syndicated radio show, conservative talker Rush Limbaugh noted a general collapse on the left by Democrats and their allies in the media.

According to Limbaugh, it was evident given an inability to defeat President Donald Trump.

“The point is in their minds, they set their sights on somebody, and they’re able to take them out,” Limbaugh said. “They set their sights on Donald Trump in 2015. They’ve launched everything they’ve got. They’ve launched every weapon in their arsenal. It has bombed out, blown up in their faces. I think they’re deranged, delusion and bordering on maybe even clinical insanity here.”

With that in mind, Limbaugh said it was his view Trump was “already reelected.”

Sanders: Cut Prison Population in Half, Create Civilian Corps of Unarmed First Responders

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) unveiled a sweeping criminal justice reform plan Sunday aimed to combat “institutional racism” in the country. The plan includes diversifying police forces, creating a civilian corps of unarmed first responders, ending cash bail, and cutting the U.S. prison population in half.

Sanders released his plan as part of his effort to combat what he says is institutional racism and the criminalization of poverty.

“Hundreds of thousands of incarcerated people in America have not been convicted of a crime and are solely in jail because they can’t afford their bail. We are criminalizing poverty,” his plan states, adding that mass incarceration “disproportionately falls on the shoulders of black and brown people in America” due to the “legacy” of institutional racism.

Rashida Tlaib Blames ‘Senior’ Democrats After Partnership With Terror-Linked Group Draws Backlash

Democratic Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib blamed senior members of her party after she and Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar faced backlash for partnering with a terror-linked group for their cancelled trip to Israel.

Tlaib and Omar held a joint press conference on Monday to address the cancelled trip, which Israel barred the lawmakers from making on account of their support for the anti-Israel boycott, divest and sanction (BDS) movement.

Palestinian-based organization Miftah, which has terror ties and in the past promoted anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, was partially sponsoring the trip. Tlaib dodged responsibility for the partnership when asked about Miftah at the press conference.

Journalist: Medics Said State Police ‘Forced’ Them To Stop Working On Heather Heyer

In a series of tweets posted last week, journalist Mary Emily O'Hara said medics were "forced" by state police to stop working on Charlottesville counter-protester Heather Heyer. 32-year-old Heyer died from blunt force injury to her chest after a neo-Nazi hit her with his car at the infamous Charlottesville, Virginia, "Unite the Right" rally.

According to O'Hara, the medics believe Heyer could have been saved if they were allowed to proceed with medical attention. The bombshell story, however, was barred from being published by her "former employer," O'Hara said, and she was not allowed to publish it elsewhere. It's unclear whom O'Hara was referring to as her former employer; her work has been featured in outlets including MSNBC, The Daily Dot, NBC News, The Daily Beast, Vice, Rolling Stone, and others.

"The week Heather Heyer died, I had exclusive interviews with medics who said state police forced them to stop working on her after the crash — which they believed led to her death," the journalist posted to Twitter on Monday. "The piece was canceled by my employer at the time, but I'll never forget what those medics told me."

A $25B US counter-drug smuggling operation quietly thrives far south of the border

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Smugglers flying small cocaine-packed airplanes toward the United States from South and Central America might make it to Mexico thinking they went undetected by American forces staked out in international waters trying to interdict them.

But once on the ground in Mexico, from where they hope to smuggle their contraband into the United States, those tiny planes will be greeted by a swarm of Mexican law enforcement. What’s more, they will never know a Department of Homeland Security plane was flying within 100 feet of them, quietly tailing them over the Eastern Pacific or Western Caribbean and then tipping off Mexican authorities.

“Even this airplane weighing 100,000 pounds — we can sneak up behind them and they won’t see us. And with the sensors we have on the airplane, a lot of times we don’t even have to get that close,” said Dan Jordan, a supervisory air interdiction agent for U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations.

Proposed laws could change how consumers get smartphones repaired

If you want to fix your broken smartphone without voiding its warranty, you could have a problem if you take it to an unauthorized repair shop. But that could change: Twenty states are now considering so-called "Right to Repair" bills.

The Federal Trade Commission is asking for public comments on whether people should be able to get their electronics fixed by a third party.

Last year, Apple included the ability to monitor battery health for certain iPhone models. However, the monitoring would become disabled for consumers who swap out the battery themselves or go to a non-authorized vendor.

Apple acknowledged it added a notification that tells customers if an iPhone battery was put in by a third party. The company said this is to "protect our customers from damaged, poor quality or used batteries which can lead to safety or performance issues."

WSJ: 2 Russian Nuke Detection Sites Go Dark After Blast

Two additional Russian nuclear stations designed to detect nuclear radiation have gone silent in the days following an explosion at a Russian missile testing facility, according to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Lassina Zerbo, the head of the CTBTO, told The Journal in an email that monitoring stations in Bilibino and Zalesovo suffered "communication and network issues" five days after the Aug. 8 explosion.

Those disruptions occurred three days after monitoring stations in Dubna and Kirov went silent.

The explosion, which occurred at a military base in the far northern Arkhangelsk region, resulted in the death of five workers according to the country's nuclear agency. Russia said it was a rocket engine explosion though other reports speculate about what exactly Russia was testing at the time of the explosion.

MSNBC Guest Tiffany Cross: It Is Not White People’s Place to Determine If Trump Is Racist

Sunday on MSNBC’s “AM Joy,” The Beat DC managing editor Tiffany Cross said if you are not “a person of color,” it’s not “your place” to determine if President Donald Trump is a racist.

Cross said, “It’s accurate, you have to call a thing a thing. I think that’s part of the reason why we got here because in 2015, when he kicked off his campaign with a bunch of racist rhetoric, there was a hesitancy to call it out. The first two years of his presidency when he introduced ridiculous white supremacist policies and would follow that up with additional racist rhetoric and we have an echo chamber of people repeating these things, we didn’t call a thing a thing. So I feel like now finally we are here. I understand there are maybe some people who get tired hearing about it. You know, kind of tough luck. There are a lot of people who live it and endure it every day for decades and centuries who get tired of experiencing it.”

Canceling Student Debt Would Hurt US Economy: Survey

Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have been leading the pack of some two dozen Democratic primary contenders on a range of progressive issues. But here's one survey they probably don't want to see.

According to a survey from the National Association of Business Economists, canceling Americans’ student debt, one of the most pressing domestic issues for 2020, would actually have an adverse impact on the US economy - instead of unleashing the millennial generation's consumption power, allowing them to settle down, buy homes and start procreating again (remember, the US birth-rate fell to its lowest level in more than a decade this year).

On the contrary, 64% of respondents (most of whom are business economists) believe forgiving most or all of student debt in the country - as both Sanders' and Warren's plans would do - would be a net negative for the economy.

PRAGER: Meanwhile, This Is What LGBTQ Organizations Are Doing To Society

Virtually every week, there seems to be another issue that preoccupies the country. But while our attention is focused on President Donald Trump, Google, Charlottesville, Russia, impeachment, Jeffrey Epstein, the next elections, racism, a trade war with China, the #MeToo movement or something else, LGBTQ organizations are quietly going about their work dismantling ethical norms, making a mockery of education, ruining innocent people's lives and destroying children's innocence. If you think this is overstated, here are some examples:

The LGBTQ Dismantling of Women's Sports

Last month, a transgender weightlifter won multiple gold medals at the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa. Laurel Hubbard of New Zealand won two gold medals and a silver in the three heavyweight categories for women weighing more than 87 kilograms, or 192 pounds. Hubbard is physically male.

Trump: NYT Just Admitted What I’ve Been Saying All Along

In a series of tweets over the weekend, President Trump highlighted a leaked transcript from a New York Times staff town hall meeting in which the paper's executive editor openly stated that over the last two years the paper had "built [its] newsroom to cover one story" — the Robert Mueller-debunked Trump-Russia "collusion" narrative — and was now shifting to Trump's "racism" and "division."

After suffering backlash from several Democrat presidential candidates and other left-wing critics over a straightforward front-page headline accurately describing Trump's speech on the El Paso and Dayton shootings as "TRUMP URGES UNITY VS. RACISM," the Times caved to the pressure and altered its headline to "ASSAILING HATE BUT NOT GUNS."

The next Monday, the paper held a "crisis town hall meeting," the transcript of which was leaked by Slate. In the meeting, the Times' executive editor Dean Baquet openly stated that the paper has had a clear agenda in how it's covered Trump and is shifting now to a new agenda.

"We built our newsroom to cover one story, and we did it truly well," said Baquet in reference to the narrative that Trump had colluded with Russia, a claim dismantled by the special counsel's exhaustive investigation. "Now we have to regroup, and shift resources and emphasis to take on a different story," said Baquet.

His "vision" for how to cover Trump for "the rest of the next two years": How America has "become so divided by Donald Trump," particularly when it comes to race.

Pay up or hit the road, Md. transit officials tell West Virginia

For many years, the state of West Virginia paid nothing for the MARC commuter rail service that carries hundreds of residents to jobs in Maryland and Washington, D.C., every day.

For the last two years, officials in the Mountaineer State have been warned that the gravy train would soon end, and that they had better compensate Maryland more fully for the six trains — three eastbound and three westbound — that MARC runs to and from the eastern panhandle cities of Harpers Ferry, Duffields and Martinsburg.

Despite the warnings, the West Virginia legislature has been unwilling to come up with the $3.4 million that Maryland is seeking to maintain the current schedule.

Maryland’s response: a steep reduction in service.

'Over my dead body': Lindsey Graham rebukes idea of transforming Supreme Court and Electoral College

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham rebuked plans by some Democrats to add seats to the Supreme Court and to do away with the Electoral College, in comments during an interview with Fox News' Maria Bartiromo on Sunday morning.

"At least five Democratic senators are threatening a restructuring of the Supreme Court if they do not get their way in these gun cases. Tell us how you see it," Bartiromo said.

"This has been a dream of the Left for decades, is to increase the number of judges on the court," Graham answered. "Pack them with liberal judges so the court can do through the legal system what they can't do through the ballot box. The dream of every leftist is to have a liberal court enacting laws from the bench. The dream of every conservative is to have judges who will interpret the law, not make the law. So when you hear expanding the court, that is code for liberals packing the court."

Judge orders FBI to search for more records on Christopher Steele

A federal judge ordered the FBI to search for more records on its interactions with the British ex-spy whose salacious dossier was used by the bureau to justify surveillance of the Trump campaign.

The conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch and the FBI clashed over the adequacy of the bureau’s searches for documents related to Christopher Steele for months, with Judicial Watch calling for the FBI to do a search for records stemming from after Steele was removed as a confidential human source in November 2016, with the FBI declining to confirm or deny their existence.

Judge Christopher Cooper of the U.S. District Court of D.C. ruled against the FBI on Friday. Cooper said information from after Steele’s time as an FBI informant could reveal why the FBI used him as a source and stopped working with him.

THIS ISN’T NORMAL: KANSAS AND OKLAHOMA HAVE BEEN HIT BY 65 EARTHQUAKES WITHIN THE LAST 7 DAYS

The biggest one of the group hit on Friday morning. It was originally reported to be a magnitude 4.2 quake, but it was later downgraded to magnitude 4.1.

Due to the geology of the region, earthquakes in the middle of the country are often felt more acutely, and this particular earthquake was powerful enough to shake things off the shelves of people’s homes

Tim Black, who lives in Hutchinson, told the TV station his house shook and things fell off the walls. And Hutchinson resident Alice Hinnen said things fell off shelves in her home. She said she has felt earthquakes before, but this is the strongest one yet.

KWCH said people across Kansas felt this earthquake. “We’ve heard reports from people as far away as Topeka, Hays, Arkansas City, and into northern Oklahoma,” the station said on its website.

Further south, Oklahoma has experienced even more earthquakes than Kansas has over the past seven days. Overall, there has been a total of 65 earthquakesbetween the two states over the past week.

Planned Parenthood rejects abortion "gag order," exits Title X program

Planned Parenthood said all of its clinics will formally leave Title X, the marquee federal program dedicated to providing birth control to low-income women. A change to the program last year requires beneficiaries to comply with a so-called "gag order" on abortion services — something that Planned Parenthood said it isn't willing to do. The clinic's exit will result in a loss of millions of federal dollars.

In a conference call with reporters on Monday, Planned Parenthood's new leader, Alexis McGill Johnson, announced all the health care clinic's affiliates would be sending letters to the Department of Health and Human Services Monday, formally announcing their resignation from Title X. She warned that without Planned Parenthood, low-income women in rural areas would struggle to find affordable birth control options.

"For too many people struggling to make ends meet, it may be that they may go without care," Johnson said on the call.

The Precarious Future of Historically Black Colleges and Universities

It has been an open secret for several decades that the writing is on the wall for most historically black colleges and universities.

Since 1989, eight historically black colleges and universities have closed because of lost accreditation or bankruptcy. The reasons are myriad, but principally because these institutions no longer command a monopoly on attendees created by de jure segregation. For the past half-century, they have had to compete for students among mainstream public and private institutions, as well as for-profit educational institutions.

But the changing market dynamics do not tell the entire story, especially because some historically black colleges and universities such as Howard University, Morehouse College, and Fisk University continue to thrive in a competitive landscape.

Former US attorney expects 'blockbuster' FISA abuse report from DOJ inspector general

Former U.S. Attorney Guy Lewis predicted the Justice Department inspector general's report on alleged Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act abuses will be "hard-hitting," with multiple recommendations for prosecution.

During an interview Monday on Fox News, Lewis said he used to work with Inspector General Michael Horowitz at the Justice Department and called him as "tough as a nail." Lewis added, "He’s tough, he is smart, and I think the report will be a blockbuster," and said, he expects Horowitz's findings to make special counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian interference in the 2016 election "look like a sixth grade book report."

Asked to explain why, Lewis said, "It’s going to come out. It’s going to be hard-hitting. [Horowitz] spent almost two years interviewing various people — witnesses. Looking at what he describes [as] almost a million documents. And I think he’s going to make recommendations regarding prosecution and turn this whole FISA — this Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act — the submissions, I think he will turn them on their head."

ICE: Montgomery Co. violates own policy, releases undocumented immigrant accused of rape

ROCKVILLE, Md. (ABC7) - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says Montgomery County violated its own jail policy last week when it released an undocumented immigrant accused of rape despite an immigration detainer on file.

The allegations mark the latest public spat between the federal law enforcement agency and the progressive, left-leaning county. Although relations have been strained for years, they have hit a fever pitch under the leadership of Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich (D) who was sworn into office in December.

Last month, Elrich signed an executive order into law, banning Montgomery County employees from asking residents about their immigration status. The legislation also barred ICE agents from entering any secure portions of county jails, a sudden divorce from the standard operating procedure used by the Ike Leggett and Doug Duncan administrations.

‘This isn’t a job where you can relax’

UMES aviation student Russell Hayman's middle name is Joseph, but it could just as easily be “vigilant.”

That was the case on Independence Day 2019, when Hayman was involved in the rescue of a critically injured teen face down in the Atlantic Ocean.

“RJ,” as he's widely known, has been a lifeguard with the Ocean City Beach Patrol for four years and is a crew chief responsible for colleagues who man stands from 35th street to 43rd street.

From his 38th street post, Hayman witnessed 19-year-old Ben Paepcke dive awkwardly into the surf on July 4. He and Matt Egley, a first-year lifeguard who Hayman happened to be supervising at the time, sprang into action.

Hayman recalled being uneasy watching Paepcke enter the water head first at the surf's edge. It was low tide.

Paepcke broke the C5 vertebra in his neck and was in danger of drowning when the guards carefully pulled him from the water.
