A Viewer Writes: Inappropriate speech from city ambulance worker

Joe, my sister in-law has stage 4 cancer and today she started hemorrhaging coughing up blood. Her husband called for an ambulance and waited a half hour according to him. When one of the ambulance came in the door he exclaimed" who is smoking in here, no wonder she has cancer", or something to that effect. That is very inappropriate to say to a patient. We haven't found out this person's name yet but we are looking into it. I became very angry when I heard this. That just is not right. What say you?

    1. Their job is to help transport a patient PROFESIONALLY. Not judge and place judgement on how someone else chooses or chose to live their life. As a nurse I would NEVER speak that way.

    2. As a nurse you get paid professionally.

  2. First the paramedic was there to do a job, not flap his jaws about his opinions. He should be punished for even doing it as this was not professional at all.

  5. Very unprofessional.

  6. Probably shouldn’t have said it but can’t blame him for thinking it.
I feel the same way when I see people standing outside Walmart smoking using oxygen tanks/generators.

  7. They are being paid to do a job, not state their stupid ignorant opinions. If it was one of my relatives, I would do the same and try the get this person's name and contact the ambulance company to file a complaint. This person has no compassion and should not be working there. The medical cost for this is bad enough to not add insult to injury.

  8. It may be the truth but that doesn't excuse his unprofessional behavior.

I don't condone violence but in this case, I might make an exception. Someone's life was in danger and for him to say something like that is totally inappropriate and harsh.

  10. Feel free to call 4105483120 and ask for the Chief Hoppes or Darrin Scott. Talk to them about the issue. You may want to save time and go to 325 Cypress St and talk to them in person after filing a formal complaint. If you dont file a formal complaint nothing will be done about it. They can look at the records and see who was on the ambulance the day of your
    emergency.

  11. Not to disagree with anyone, but in an emergency 15 minutes can seem like an hour....

  12. Well I think without thinking he would have been cussed out at a minimum by me. If my wife was in that condition and that happened they probably would have needed a second ambulance but I might just be a romantic. Hope she has a good recovery to find him and kick him in the balls.

  13. Why don't we just look to our current President for examples on proper speech--oh wait...

  14. No way possible the wait was 30 minutes. 5 minutes feel like eturnity I've been there. All complaints have be in person and signed or it never happened. Only takes 10 minutes to file a written complaint in person I suggest you do so rather than here if it actually happened.

  17. The issue isn't that it being true or not, the issue is why would someone who is supposed to be a professional health care worker even say that in the first place. That not only puts additional stress on other family members and anyone else who is within earshot but the patient as well. Totally inexcusable.

The person who said this obviously and hopefully has skills that can save lives so I wouldn't necessarily want him to be fired and causing a possible shortage of these workers. But he absolutely needs more training and maturity and needs to be under supervision until he gains both. IMO of course. Although I don't condone violence, and I wouldn't want to cause a delay in getting her to the hospital, it would have been hard not to attempt some much needed correction had I been there when he said it.

Emotions already are high in these situations and there is no need to say or do anything to further escalate them.

  20. I'm sorry but I didn't see Salisbury ambulance anywhere in your report. How did we immediately go to calling Rick Hoppes or assuming the Paramedic was from Salisbury ?

    1. He is from SFD. You can take my word for that or be like the ignorant naysayer questioning if it even happened.

On another note, I wasn't there with a stopwatch so I don't know how long it took them to get there, only what I was told.

These comments haven't surprised me except maybe the one bringing the president into this.

    2. 6:40 The one bringing the President in it is on here daily trying to bash the prez. Same person. Totally Irrelevant. Always whining. 🙄

That won't happen. No one has been fired for that yet. Do you think this is the first time some paramedic or fire prick has run his mouth to a patient?

EMS 1 does it all the time. Sarcastic little asshole from Sharptown.

Sadly they are the only ones to contact, but it is worthless like they are.

  24. Problem about Salisbury is that Rick Hoppes is not a real fire chief and should not have been appointed by Ireton or Jake Day. Poor leadership all around.

If Jake Day cared about the citizens of our city he would do something about the childish behaviors of the Salisbury Fire Department, but he chose to be the childish one as well. Getting on Facebook and condoning the stupid attacks made by Brian Records, Cherry Cheeks Townsend, the Insely family, the Scotts, and others about the members of Station 1.

Piss poor leadership from Jake Day on down to the little piss ant paid fireman of the fire department. Even Council Vice President Muir played childish facebook games commenting and liking the stupid comments.

If they followed the SFD Policy on Social Media Brian Records would have been the first one fired.

For all of people that felt that they had to add their ignorant comment....grow up. Your comment is just a reflection on the person that you really are.

  30. I Had an experience with a woman paramedic.
She was quite rude to me and most unprofessional .
I was at the bank when they were called
to come assist. The Bank Mgr. told me she called
to complain about their unprofessional manner and said if I'd been her Mother, she would have slapped the paramedic.
At that point in time , I was in to much pain to
retaliate myself or I would have.

  33. If you can support a President for "saying what everyone is thinking" then support this paramedic. I think health should be their primary concern, not customer service.

And that's why you are an idiot and will never be a professional with an attitude like that. Looks like we have another swamp that needs draining.

  35. Some people just hate it when someone else (the paramedic) points out the obvious, as he should have.

  36. Some of those people on ambulances are a joke. I had to be on one and the person putting an iv in my arm screwed it up and it popped out and blood went all over my arm. One of the emt up front had to rush back to us and grab my arm to stop the blood flow till that fool got it right. And they still had the nerve to charge me over 800.00.
