Amazon Ranks High Among Ohio Employers With Workers on Food Stamps

Amazon ranks high on a list charting Ohio's employers with the most workers and their family members on food stamps — estimated at more than 10 percent of its workforce, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

As of August, Amazon had 1,430 workers and family members on food stamps, ranking 19th on a list of 50 large employers in the state, according to the progressive policy group Policy Matters Ohio, the Dispatch reported.

Since a typical food-stamp beneficiary receives benefits for about two people, Amazon likely has about 700 workers receiving food stamps, more than 10 percent of its Ohio workforce, the news outlet reported.

"We've appreciated having more employment, but maybe we should be focusing economic development dollars on good jobs," Zach Schiller, Policy Matters' research director, told the Dispatch. "It's pretty clear that a lot of these jobs are not good jobs. That should raise a policy question for our public officials, and that's why we think it's worth pointing out."

  3. I do get it Joe! I'm the previous commenter as to "why not here on the eastern shore".

My thought was if there are zero jobs currently - which is a huge issue around us with box stores closing, empty lots, a toddler mayor who..(well we've beaten that horse), IF a big company comes in with jobs, is that not better than zero??

Wouldn't that be a better problem to have than nothing at all?

  4. Amazon isn't coming to MD and definitely not the eastern shore. The only business on the shore is tourism and chickens. Most of you are willing to jeopardize tourism by allowing offshore oil drilling.

  5. 1:44 PM No. The answer is no. Forcing taxpayers to subsidize a billion dollar corporation? Are you really that stupid?? Its a burden on the community and a burden on every single taxpaying resident.

Is being in the NEGATIVE better than ZERO?

  6. The owner of Amazon, Jeff Bezos has an estimated worth in excess of $80 Billion dollars and increases everyday.
If there was an pill available that would give him an sense of decency and humanity perhaps he would see to it that his employees are paid a living wage.
But then again, he was/is a heavy supporter of Hillary and her so called Clinton Foundation.

    1. What do you want Him to do, Pay $15 and hour to put stuff in boxes? Ok, good idea and in 12 months or less everything orders from Amazon will come from a warehouse in Thailand.
      Pay level = skill level.

  8. 700 workers on food stamps 10% of Amazon workforce in Ohio. If Amazon wasn't in Ohio then there would probably be another 6300 workers on food stamps

  9. 2:47 Talking about the 2nd headquarters that the state is trying to convince to be built here. Yes, there are 4 warehouses and all located near 95/major airports.

  11. What don't people understand ? Other than janitors their Headquarters is not going to proffer jobs that anyone on the shore is qualified for. It's corporate and IT, analytical jobs not warehouse schlepping and box stuffing. There is little here for even people qualified to move here for.

  12. Logistically the eastern shore would never make sense for any large company. Even the poultry industry does not make sense here logistically. It just so happened to grow that way from inception. If all the big poultry industries could roll back time and start fresh they would not do it on this side of the bay. Why would someone as forward thinking as Amazon?

  13. Amazon plans to 'greenmail' whatever location it chooses into paying for a very wide array of amenities to its specifications. Think rock star concert demands or Hillary speech details multiplied massively.

It may be a bargain for Amazon, but not for the 'winner'. OTOH, they could just put the screws on Seattle to match the proposal.

  14. It's just the prospect of a gazillion jobs that dazzles people.
This article tries to make them actually look at the types of jobs.
There are plenty of people on the Shore that can do more than stuff 60 boxes an hour.
The really stupid thing is to hand out all kinds of tax breaks and incentives to bring giant sweat shops to the Shore.
But the people who are gushing about these jobs are the same ones who railed against the same kind of conditions in Apple and Nike factories overseas..
