Where is the America in which I grew up?

America's loss of innocence is a result of the public's growing realization of the deep state, media bias and university brainwashing. Will things change?

Joe David, 20/03/17 13:05

The America I knew growing up is rapidly disappearing. Law and order is being replaced by mob rule. A madness has claimed the country, introduced in recent years by hate groups who are dedicated to using violent protests to cause political instability. In a frenzy of madness, often triggered by just an innuendo, these groups want to crush all opposition to their agenda. For astute observers of our culture, this doesn’t come as a surprise. Our great universities, which were once citadels of reason, a safe place for open discourse, have abandoned both – and they have become instead centers for cultivating insurrection, with minimal tolerance for truth and clear thinking.

As a result of the events in the last eight years, I have come to the conclusion that my beloved country – the land of liberty, once ruled by freedom of speech, law and order, and a constitutional government – is being irreparably compromised by rebellion. In just a matter of a few years, many Americans have tossed aside sense and have joyfully embraced mob violence (examples, Berkeley University, inauguration riots, Michael Savage attack, and much, much more). The lessons in history on the fall of great nations have all been ignored – for those lucky enough to have once learned these lessons in school.

College Savings Accounts Are Popular But Missing Their Marks

Few families use them -- and even fewer put enough money away to matter. Advocates, however, say the programs are too young to judge.

In the spring of 2014, Ed FitzGerald visited a Cleveland elementary school to announce a new and highly ambitious education program: free college savings accounts with cash subsidies for every kindergartner in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. At the time, FitzGerald was the county executive and the Democratic nominee for governor. A similar savings account program had been introduced a few years earlier in San Francisco, but that was an experiment limited to public schools. FitzGerald’s initiative included children in private and parochial schools as well. With 10,500 accounts in its first year, it promised to be the largest effort of its kind in the country.

At a press conference, FitzGerald cited the increasing cost of higher education and low college attendance rates as reasons for the new program. Past efforts by the state and federal governments to encourage saving for college, through so-called 529 investment vehicles, had largely failed. Research from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System found that in 2013, these 529s achieved a meager 2.5 percent participation rate among eligible families. For households in the bottom half of the income distribution, participation was below 1 percent.

The savings plans, named for the 529 section of the federal tax code created by Congress in 1996, built upon an idea pioneered by Michigan in the late 1980s. The idea was that government could help parents pay for college by offering them tax breaks on savings accounts for higher education. The money parents withdrew from the accounts to pay for education expenses and the interest generated by the invested principal were tax exempt.

Used Car Prices Crash Most Since 2008

According to NADA Used Car Guide, wholesale prices on used vehicles are getting crushed. Let’s take a look at the details.

Used Car Prices Since 1995

Used Market Update

In a reversal of what typically occurs in February, wholesale prices of used vehicles up to eight years old fell substantially last month, dropping 1.6% compared to January. The drop was counter to the 1% increase expected for the month and marked just the second time in the past 20 years prices fell in February (last years’ scant 0.2% being the other instance).

NADA Used Car Guide’s seasonally adjusted used vehicle price index fell for the eighth straight month, declining 3.8% from January to 110.1. The drop was by far the worst recorded for any month since November 2008 as the result of a recession-related 5.6% tumble. February’s index figure was also 8% below February 2016’s 119.4 result and marked the index’s lowest level since September 2010.

Incentives Jump by 18.1%

Automakers grew incentive spending once again in February, making it the 23rd month in a row where spending was increased. On average, spending reached $3,594 per unit versus $3,043 per unit in February 2016 according to Autodata.

Among the U.S. Big Three, GM raised incentives by 27.4% in February to an average of $5,125 per unit. Spending at Ford Motor Company rose by 20.9% to $4,012 per unit, while FCA increased incentives by 10.6% to $4,365.

As for Import automakers, Toyota Motor Sales raised incentives by 7.9% in February, reaching an average of $2,267 per unit. American Honda grew incentives by 26.6% to $1,886, while Nissan North America increased spending by 20.1% to $4,080 for the month.

Inventory Falls to 74 Days

Compared to January, days’ supply fell by 11 days in February, landing at 74 days for the period. Looking back, February 2016 saw a supply of only 69 days according to Wards Auto.

GM’s supply reached 91 days over the month, due largely to Buick’s industry high 167-day inventory. Ford Motor Company’s supply fell to 78 days, while FCA’s inventory dropped to 83 days.

Canada on track to see 40 percent hike in asylum-seekers by year's end

Canada saw a significant spike in the number of asylum-seekers in January and February, putting the country on track to surpass total annual levels for the past five years, according to immigration statistics released Monday.

The first two months of 2017 saw 5,520 applications for refugee status. If that trend continues, officials estimate the year ending with 33,000 refugee claims - 40 percent more than last year.

In addition, one-in-five asylum-seekers were apprehended while illegally crossing into Canada. Nearly half of that group was caught trying to enter Quebec. Most of the remaining people were taken into custody in British Columbia and Manitoba, according to a report on the findings.

Lamar Smith says media, Democrats are indistinguishable: Call them 'Mediacrats'

Rep. Lamar Smith is using a new term to describe the mainstream media and the Democratic Party, arguing that both have become almost indistinguishable from each other.

“The media and Democrats are so close in association and so close in their philosophical views that we might as well use one word to describe both, and that’s ‘Mediacrats,’” the Texas Republican, founder of the House Media Fairness Caucus, told the Washington Examiner in an interview Sunday.

Mr. Smith said the media’s treatment of President Trump should be enough to strip them of their “mainstream” status.

“How can the media be considered ‘mainstream’ when it doesn’t represent a majority of the American people?” he asked. “It’s more accurate to use the term ‘liberal.’”

“It’s the most biased media I’ve seen in my lifetime,” he said. “I am concerned that it is hurting our republic, I’m afraid they are hurting themselves, I’m afraid they are hurting the country, and they’re clearly so intent on hurting the president that they are taking themselves down at the same time.”

President Trump is poised to dismantle Barack Obama's climate policies

But his plan is certain to face legal pushback.

President Trump’s climate plan is intended to send an unmistakable signal to the nation and the world that he intends to follow through on his campaign vows to rip apart every element of what he has called President Barack Obama’s “stupid” policies to address climate change. The timing and exact form of the announcement remain unsettled, however.

DHS releases U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Declined Detainer Outcome Report

WASHINGTON – The Department of Homeland Security today issued the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Declined Detainer Outcome Report required by President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order, Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States, signed on January 25. This report will be issued weekly to highlight jurisdictions that choose not to cooperate with ICE detainers or requests for notification, therefore potentially endangering Americans. ICE places detainers on aliens who have been arrested on local criminal charges or who are in local custody and for whom ICE possesses probable cause to believe that they are removable from the United States, so that ICE can take custody of the alien when he or she is released from local custody.
“When law enforcement agencies fail to honor immigration detainers and release serious criminal offenders, it undermines ICE’s ability to protect the public safety and carry out its mission,” said Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan. “Our goal is to build cooperative, respectful relationships with our law enforcement partners. We will continue collaborating with them to help ensure that illegal aliens who may pose a threat to our communities are not released onto the streets to potentially harm individuals living within our communities.”
The Declined Detainer Outcome Report is a weekly report that lists the jurisdictions that have declined to honor ICE detainers or requests for notification and includes examples of criminal charges associated with those released aliens. The report provides information on declined detainers and requests for notification for that reporting period. A jurisdiction’s appearance on this report is not an exclusive factor in determining a jurisdiction’s level of cooperation with ICE. This report is intended to provide the public with information regarding criminal actions committed by aliens and any jurisdiction that ignores or otherwise failed to honor any detainers or requests for notification with respect to such aliens.

Bills On Immigration, Prescription Drugs, OK’d By Md. House

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A measure to prevent authorities from detaining immigrants to ask about their immigration status and a bill to stop price gouging for prescription drugs were approved Monday in Maryland’s House of Delegates.

The votes came on a busy day when lawmakers worked late to meet the General Assembly’s crossover deadline. That’s a day when the House and Senate aim to approve bills they plan to send to the other chamber for passage this year.

Maryland lawmakers have about three weeks left in the 90-day session, which is scheduled to adjourn April 10.

George Soros-aligned group weighs funding anti-Trump activists

A network of some of the nation’s wealthiest Democratic donors is weighing providing money and support to several of the new activist groups that have cropped up since Election Day to challenge President Trump and his agenda.

Organizers of January’s Women’s March on Washington and leaders of Indivisible will make presentations later this week to the Democracy Alliance when the influential donor coalition holds its private spring meeting in Washington, the group’s president Gara LaMarche said.

LaMarche said he already has sought to connect alliance contributors to Indivisible, one of the groups at the forefront of anti-Trump efforts. Its organizers, led by former Democratic congressional aides, have created a how-to manual “for resisting the Trump agenda” that is modeled on conservative Tea Party tactics and has encouraged shows of opposition at congressional town hall meetings.

More than 5,500 local groups are using the guide to fight administration policies, organizers say.

The alliance, aligned with billionaire financier George Soros, also is weighing building a pool of money that can be deployed for “rapid response” work by other liberal groups on an array of issues..

Maryland senators on health care reform: Don't rush it

COLUMBIA, Md. —As Republicans tee up a House vote on Thursday to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, Democrats -- including those in Maryland -- are putting on their own full-court-press.

In Howard County on Monday, U.S. Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris van Hollen headlined a town hall meeting on health care as part of an ongoing effort to hear constituent concerns and also to make sure the House GOP plan is dead on arrival.

"Don't rush this through. We've got to know what we do before we pass it," Cardin said.

"This could come down to very few votes in the House, and certainly in the Senate," van Hollen said. "As long as their plan is to destroy the Affordable Care Act, I will fight it tooth and nail."

The audience was primarily composed of health care professionals. The senators said they are frustrated with the lack of specifics on the Republican health care bill, especially with talk of last-minute changes to the measure.

Remember Slow Food?

'Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?'

'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,

I informed him.

'All the food was slow.'

'C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?'

'It was a place called 'at home,'' I explained !

'Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'

By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table.

But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it :

Some parents NEVER owned their own house, never wore Levi’s, never set foot on a golf course, never traveled out of the country or had a credit card.

In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck. Or maybe it was Sears & Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died.

My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we never had heard of soccer.

I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow) we didn't have a television in our house until I was 11.

It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at midnight, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came back on the air at about 6 a.m. And there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people.

I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line.

Pizzas were not delivered to our home. But milk was.

All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers--my brother delivered a newspaper, six days a week. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which he got to keep 2 cents. He had to get up at 6 AM every morning.

On Saturday, he had to collect the 42 cents from his customers. His favorite customers were the ones who gave him 50 cents and told him to keep the change. His least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day.

The Deadly War On Drugs, Waged By Your Local SWAT Team

The New York Times recently delivered an extraordinary investigative journalism report depicting how our country’s continued romance with waging war on drugs has taken on a local and chilling nature.

The “War on Drugs” in this country dates back to Richard Nixon, and then was amplified by Ronald Reagan. The utter failure for decades of border interdiction and crop eradication coupled with alienating neighborhoods with ‘buy and bust’ tactics (which have had no more of a momentary effect and have led to more juveniles being ‘employed’ in drug dealing to elude jail sentences) has had next to no impact in foregoing these wasteful and hugely expensive efforts, which of course disproportionately affect those living in poverty and people of color. These are supply-side drug control efforts, which endure despite their damage and profound inutility.

Instead, ‘Gung Ho!’ has trumped a host of effective prevention and treatment strategies for drug use and dependence. The militant approach to limiting supplies of illegal drugs is estimated to cost $100 billion/year globally, one fifth of that in the United States (see Richard Branson’s Ending The War On Drugs, Virgin Books, London, 2016). Demand side approaches, of reducing use and thus purchases, have been lost in the fog of war.

And as we witness a mounting ethos of military ‘solutions’ to social problems emanating today from Washington, D.C., we are likely to see even more useless and dangerous pursuits ahead, not just abroad but in your neighborhood and mine.

The Times reported that from 2010 - 2016 there were at least 81 civilians and 13 law enforcement officers who died in what are called “dynamic entry”, “no knock” raids. Reportedly, as well, scores of people, civilians and officers, were wounded. So many of these assaults, which rival counter-terror raids in their violence, have resulted in avoidable casualties and deaths, widespread trauma among those raided – as well as neighbors and law enforcement alike, extensive property damage, and a spate of legal settlements costing many millions of taxpayer dollars.

Wall Street Bull artist calls BS on ‘Fearless Girl’ statue

Arturo Di Modica says this little girl has no place on Wall Street

The artist who sculpted Wall Street’s iconic “Charging Bull” is seeing red over the statue of the defiant girl placed in his snorting beast’s path – and says she should be carted away immediately.

The bull is art, Arturo Di Modica said of his bronze behemoth. The girl is, well, bull.

“That is not a symbol! That’s an advertising trick,” the 76-year-old Sicilian immigrant said, clutching his heart.
“Fearless Girl” was, in fact, commissioned as a publicity stunt tied to International Women’s Day by State Street Global Advisors STT, -0.23% a Boston-based investment company which manages some $2.5 trillion in assets. The firm said the girl is intended to promote its campaign urging “gender diversity in corporate leadership roles.”

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, Di Modica said. “Women, girls, that’s great, but that’s not what that (my sculpture) is,” he said in an interview from his Church Street art studio.

Recent immigrants accused of raping young Maryland classmate will be jailed until next hearings

Two ninth-grade students accused of raping a 14-year-old classmate inside a high school bathroom last week will remain behind bars pending court proceedings, a Montgomery County judge ruled Friday.

Henry Sanchez, 18, and Jose Montano, 17, were arrested Thursday at Rockville High School and charged with three counts each in connection with the alleged rape of a female classmate.

Judge Eugene Wolfe refused to grant bond to either during a Friday court hearing and ordered them to remain in custody until their next appearance.

The girl, identified by law enforcement as “Victim A,” told authorities that she was walking in a school hallway Thursday morning when she was approached by the two boys, according to police documents.

Montano asked Victim A for sex, which she refused. Montano asked again, more persistently, and pushed Victim A into the boys’ bathroom,” police wrote in a probable cause statement after interviewing the girl.

Maryland releases list of top tax evaders

WASHINGTON — The State of Maryland hopes a bit of unwanted attention will get some of the state’s more egregious tax evaders to pay up.

The Comptroller has released its 2017 list of the 25 businesses and individuals who are the most behind on their tax bills — in some cases, hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot tells WTOP that the program has been very successful since it began in 2000, and has led to the collection of $43.3 million from taxpayers who appeared on the lists.

“It’s very embarrassing for them to have them publicly listed as owing the state money,” Franchot said.

Topping the 2017 list of businesses is NC Services Inc., which operates as the New Carrollton Shell, in New Carrollton, according to the state. Franchot said the business owes the state $926,464 in taxes.

Liberals reach new low with rabid anti-Trump publicity stunt

Left-wing rhetoric has reached an all-time low with this latest show of hatred for the President of the United States.

It’s okay to disagree with the President, because we all do it from time to time. But to compare him to Hitler in an attempt to delegitimize him? That’s just pathetic and terribly divisive. It doesn’t do anything to further your agenda or win people over to your side.

The Phoenix billboard features a picture of President Trump surrounded by mushroom clouds and dollar signs that are made to look like swastikas. On his jacket he’s also wearing a Russian flag lapel pin.

The woman who owns the land under the offensive billboard, Beatrice Moore, paid a California artist to create the disturbing piece. She claims that it is her way of “standing up” to Trump’s “disturbing policies” and plans to leave the sign up for the next four years.

Karen Fiorito is a liberal business owner and is currently paying for the billboard, stating that she feels like “a lot of people are feeling this way.”

Not unless they’re mentally disturbed, honey.

Noncitizens voting across U.S., Frederick County count suggests

Lawsuit on behalf of Marylanders compared jury pools

The debate over noncitizens voting was a hot topic a few years ago in Frederick County, a prosperous Maryland suburb wedged between Washington’s urban metropolis and the state’s rural western gateway to the rest of America.

Conservative activists went to court to show that noncitizens were registering fraudulently to vote. A court employee met their request by turning over pages of residents’ names disqualified from jury duty because of alien status.

When those lists were compared with voting records for just three years — 2007, 2008 and 2011 — nearly 180 noncitizens were found to have registered to vote. Of those, 63 had voted, some in multiple elections. The 180 registered votes came from 1,400 disqualified noncitizens in those three years, a rate of 12.8 percent.

The issue of noncitizen voters has taken on national importance. President Trump, who said 3 million or so voted illegally in November, plans to name a federal task force to investigate.

Frederick County’s numbers offer a limited snapshot from a handful of jury pools, but they indicate that noncitizens are registered to vote and are casting ballots in states, which administer federal, state and local elections.

Your daily cuppa could be the key to beating DEMENTIA

A cup of tea a day keeps dementia at bay, according to a recent study by the National University of Singapore.

The study was published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Ageing and determined that drinking tea every day reduces the risk of cognitive impairment in older people by 50 per cent.

For those who are genetically predisposed to Alzheimer's, a cup of tea daily can reduce the risk by as much as 86 per cent.

The study was led by Assistant Professor Feng Lei who, along with his team, studied 957 Chinese people aged 55 or older over two years.

Assistant Professor Feng said the results could apply to people of all ethnicities.

'The data from our study suggests that a simple and inexpensive lifestyle measure such as daily tea drinking can reduce a person's risk of developing neurocognitive disorders in late life,' Assistant Professor Feng told Nine Coach.

Assistant Professor Feng said pharmacological therapy for dementia is 'elusive' and the results are far from being satisfactory yet.

Veto-Proof Majority Approves Baltimore Minimum Wage Hike

The Baltimore City Council on Monday voted in a veto-proof majority for a bill that would raise the city's minimum wage to $15 by 2023.

The vote was 11-3. Under the bill there would be gradual increases in the minimum wage starting in 2019. Until then, the city would be tied to the state minimum wage, now $8.75 an hour, but will rise to $9.25 an hour this July, and $10.10 an hour in July 2018. The city minimum wage will then rise to $11.25 the following year, with $1.25 an hour increases until it reaches the $15 level.

Once the minimum wage hits $15, it will be increased by the city Wage Commission based on inflation.

Pelosi Calls Out Trump On Twitter…Then Gets COMPLETELY DESTROYED For Double Standard!!

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi from California, reintroduced the discussion on Twitter Sunday, as to why she is an absolute horror to the country. She tweeted out that President Donald Trump had to “grow up,” expressing that Trump shouldn’t be “allowed” to say whatever he wants without any evidence on hand to back it up…

Well if being “allowed” to speak is how Pelosi views the our first amendment rights, then maybe she should try her hand at North Korean politics…She would fit right in over there.

She was think of Trump’s charge that former President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower throughout last year’s presidential campaign. There was no evidence to assist Trump’s claims that have been released to the public, and the Trump administration proceeds to call on agencies to perform an investigation into the matter.

Newt Rips into Comey, Calls Today's Testimony 'Pathetic'

We all knew the shills at the FBI were 'investigating' Russian phantoms, hoping to find more nothing. If we learned anything at all from today's morose testimony by James Comey it is that he's unwilling to confirm investigations were underway, or even considered, to reveal the leakers that keep disseminating sensitive information to the press. Bear in mind, this is a felony punishable up to 10 years in ape raping prison, yet no one seems the least bit interested in who was committing them.

We can hardly conclude that Comey is a democratic shill, considering he was instrumental in making Hillbot look like a literal prisoner one week before the elections -- with the announcement of his pointless investigation which he later redacted.

Newt weighed in on the matter which he described as 'idiotic' -- confounded at the juxtaposition of Comey freely admitting to investing Russian phantoms, but unwilling to even say he might look into the leaks.

Will Russiagate backfire on the left?

Pat Buchanan urges probe of 'the deep state and its journalistic collaborators'

The big losers of the Russian hacking scandal may yet be those who invested all their capital in a script that turned out to based on a fairy tale.

In Monday’s House Intelligence Committee hearings, James Comey did confirm that his FBI has found nothing to support President Trump’s tweet that President Obama ordered him wiretapped. Not unexpected, but undeniably an embarrassment for the tweeter-in-chief.

Yet longer-term damage may have been done to the left. For Monday’s hearing showed that its rendering of the campaign of 2016 may be a product of fiction and a fevered imagination.

After eight months investigating the hacking and leaking of the emails of Clinton campaign chief John Podesta and the DNC, there is apparently no evidence yet of Trump collusion with Russia.

Former Director of National Intelligence Gen. James Clapper has said that, as of his departure day, Jan. 20, he had seen no evidence of a Russia-Trump collusion.

NY Times: There Needs To Be A Crackdown On Illegal Alien Employers

It’s hard to be sure what was going through the minds of the Editorial Board of the NY Times in calling for a crackdown of employers of those unlawfully present in the United States. Perhaps it was a typical kneejerk opposition to Donald Trump. Perhaps they’d been drinking too much. Regardless, once you get beyond the Trump Derangement Syndrome within the editorial, the idea is sound, and what I and so many others have been saying since this issue became serious in the post 9/11 world

No Crackdown on Illegal Employers

President Trump began his campaign assailing immigrants as ruthless lawbreakers who steal American jobs with impunity. To halt them, he has vowed to build a wall along the border with Mexico, hire thousands of new immigration agents, ramp up immigrant detention and subject visa applicants to even more rigorous vetting. His administration has been largely silent, however, about the strongest magnet that has drawn millions of immigrants, legal and not, to the United States for generations: jobs.

American employers continue to assume relatively little risk by hiring undocumented immigrants to perform menial, backbreaking work, often for little pay. Meanwhile, as Mr. Trump’s deportation crackdown accelerates, families are being ripped apart, and communities of hard-working immigrants with deep roots in this country are gripped by fear and uncertainty. As long as employers remain off the hook, a border wall and an expanded dragnet can only make temporary dents in the flows of undocumented immigrants.

Rachel Maddow Just Got MORE Bad News After Tax Return Fiasco

If Rachel Maddow wasn’t such a biased, insane liberal asshat, I might actually feel sorry for her. She hyped what she thought was a monster scoop last week. Not only was it a flop, but Trump scooped her scoop by releasing his tax documents before she went live. She was outsmarted yet again by The Donald, a man she has repeatedly called stupid. Then what does that make you Rachel? Hmmm? Her ratings for the night of the reveal went through the roof, but after everyone found out it was a nothingburger, her ratings tanked. No… scratch that… they CRATERED. Serves her right.

I hear MSNBC is royally ticked at Maddow. I don’t know if this will prove fatal to her show, but it sure made her look like a day old cow pie left in the sun to dry. Ever since the great reveal, things have just gotten worse and worse for Maddow. Trump is now making noises about suing her and he is claiming what she did was illegal. I would have to agree on that point.

INSANITY: Having Unprotected Sex Without Disclosing HIV Status No Longer Felony Under New Bill

You’ve got to be freaking kidding me! This is just how far gone California really is. Currently, if you knowingly give someone HIV through sex, blood or semen donations, you can get up to seven years. That’s far too low for murder in my book. It’s still a death sentence. Now, state Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and others want to downgrade it from a felony to a misdemeanor. They say it stigmatizes those with HIV. So, just make giving a deadly disease knowingly to others a slap on the wrist. Nice. Why not? They’ve made Manson into a series, why not this? SMH.

Between 1988 and June 2014, there were 357 convictions in California for an HIV-specific felony that would have been downgraded by SB 239, according to a study by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, which conducts research on sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy. So, according to Wiener, giving people HIV legally will encourage people to get tested? Who knew? This is just insane.

Maryland Democrats Aim To 'Build The Pipeline' For Women In Office

This past November was a wake-up call for the Democratic Party. Many Democratic women, in particular, are feeling a strong need to answer that call.

Less than a quarter of elected positions are filled by women in the U.S. There are many reasons for that, but Democratic activist Diane Fink says women are often discouraged somewhere along the way. She runs Emerge Maryland, a group that helps Democratic women run for office.

"What we've learned is that the women, their ambition is crushed by somebody in their life. Oftentimes they'll say, 'I mentioned this to my family and they just laughed,' or, 'I went to a community leader or party leader and they told me, 'Well, no, that probably isn't for you.' "

Democrats are now figuring out how to rebuild their party — and capitalize on the energy in progressive circles, shown in demonstrations like the Women's March, where millions of women took to the streets the day after the inauguration.

In Maryland, Fink says, her group's aim is to have at least half of Maryland's political power belong to females. "And to build the pipeline," she adds. "We have no female delegates to Congress."

We sat down with some of these women in the training program to talk about how they got here, and what sparked their political ambitions.

After Inmate With Schizophrenia Dies In Shower, Fla. Prosecutor Finds No Wrongdoing

Prosecutors in Miami-Dade County said that they found no evidence of a crime in the death of a prison inmate who was left for two hours in a hot shower.

Four years after Darren Rainey died at the Dade Correctional Institution, the state's investigation found that the corrections officers who locked Rainey in the shower committed no crime. Miami-Dade prosecutor Katherine Fernandez Rundle opted not to charge any of the officers, finding that "the evidence does not show that Rainey's well-being was grossly disregarded by the correctional staff."

The state's medical examiner, Dr. Emma Lew, found that Rainey's death was an accident resulting from his schizophrenia, heart disease and being confined in the shower. "It is not substantiated that temperatures inside the shower room were excessively high," she wrote.

But the investigation's findings are disputed. As The Associated Press reports, several witnesses said that Rainey's skin appeared to be "peeled back" and reddish in spots, with one inmate claiming that Rainey looked like "a boiled lobster."

Why Young People of Color Are Central To 'Raising The Age' Debates

Earlier this week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York attended an event at a Manhattan synagogue in which he sharply criticized the city for not closing Rikers Island, the city's notorious jail.

"Kids are literally dying because of the policy we have today," Cuomo told the assembled crowd. "These are poor people who are members of minority groups who have long histories of being discriminated against." The audience cheered Cuomo at the event for "raising the age" — that is, changing state laws so that 16- and 17-year-old offenders are sent into the juvenile justice system instead of trying them and imprisoning them as adults.

Raising the age has become one of Cuomo's legislative priorities: New York is one of just two states — North Carolina is the other — that automatically tries 16-year-olds as adults. Critics of the state's current policies point to their stark racial outcomes: in New York City, 9 out of 10 young offenders sentenced to adult prison are black or Latino. (In North Carolina, young black offenders are nine times more likely to be sentenced to adult prison.)

Marc Schindler, the executive director of the Justice Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank in Washington D.C, put these policies in explicit racial terms. "If these policies were disproportionately impacting middle and upper class white kids, these policies wouldn't be allowed to exist," he said.

Arkansas To Split Its Holidays For Martin Luther King Jr. And Robert E. Lee

With the stroke of a pen on Monday, Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson is set to separate a holiday that has for decades celebrated both Martin Luther King Jr. and Gen. Robert E. Lee in the state.

Under the bill that Hutchinson says he'll sign into law, King will have the third Monday of January entirely to himself, as dictated by federal law; Lee will now be commemorated in a state holiday on the second Saturday of October.
If the civil rights icon and Confederate general would seem to make for rather odd bedfellows, the state's Legislature has come to agree. Member station KUAR reportsthat by a 66-11 vote Friday — with 18 members not voting and five voting present — the Arkansas House of Representatives passed a bill to "eliminate the dual status of the joint holiday," and to "specify the teaching of content related to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in conjunction with the corresponding holiday." The Senate had already approved the change.

In a statement, Hutchinson commended the passage of the bill, which was co-sponsored by state Sen. David Wallace and state Rep. Grant Hodges, both Republicans. According to KUAR, the governor thanked lawmakers for the bipartisan effort:

"The support for a separate holiday to recognize Martin Luther King far exceeded my expectations and speaks well of the General Assembly and our state. This bill was one of my priorities, and I was honored to testify for it in both Chambers. I look forward to having a signing ceremony that emphasizes the historic dynamic of this new day."

Democrats' Misguided Argument Against Gorsuch

I’m not sure who decided that the Democratic critique of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch would be that he doesn’t side with the little guy. It’s a truly terrible idea. Like other liberals, I’m still shocked and upset that Judge Merrick Garland never got the vote he deserved after his nomination by President Barack Obama, and I’d rather have a progressive justice join the court. But the thing is, siding with workers against employers isn’t a jurisprudential position. It’s a political stance. And justices -- including progressive justices -- shouldn’t decide cases based on who the parties are. They should decide cases based on their beliefs about how the law should be interpreted.

Let’s start at the beginning. Way back in the beginning, in fact. The Hebrew Bible, which sides with the little guy a great deal, has something to say about parties to a case. Specifically, Deuteronomy 16:19 says judges shouldn’t “respect persons,” which is the King James Version’s translation of the Hebrew phrase that literally means “recognize faces.” Justice -- which is mentioned in the famous next verse (“Justice, justice shalt thou pursue”) -- requires judges to decide cases under the law, not based on preferences for individuals.

Socialism’s Rising Popularity Threatens America’s Future

Too many of us have forgotten the lessons of the Cold War.

Headlines about “the end of the republic” litter political commentary across the political landscape. They usually mark the beginning of a discussion of the merits of Donald Trump as president of the United States, but his ascendency is not the leading sign of a collapse of American society. For that, see a recent poll indicating a tectonic shift occurring in the political preferences of U.S. adults. When you consider current trends in cultural norms and widely held beliefs, you will see that we are headed toward the end of the American experiment.

The American Culture and Faith Institute recently conducted a survey of adults 18 and older. It shows not only how deeply divided Americans are on some issues but also how their view of the nation stands in many cases in stark contrast to our nation’s founding principles. Most Americans (58 percent) see themselves as politically moderate, while a quarter identify as conservative, and 17 percent as liberal. Those who were both socially and fiscally conservative, the group tracked by the ACFI in greatest detail, were 6 percent of the population.

Meals on Wheels Program Will NOT Be Eliminated in Federal Budget

Various media outlets have published articles claiming that the Trump administration's federal budget will eliminate funding for the Meals on Wheels program, whose volunteer drivers deliver hot meals to senior Americans across the country. But the federal budget is cutting funds to a federal grant program that provides just three percent of the Meals on Wheels revenue budget, and the program will still receive significant federal funding.

Articles like the Hill's "Trump proposed budget eliminates funds for Meals on Wheels," or the Huffington Post's, "#LetThemDie: ‘Heartless’ Donald Trump Blasted For Slashing Meals On Wheels Funds," have been shared thousands of times on social media, causing readers to believe the Meals on Wheels program will be eradicated. The National Review reports that this claim is false.
