Senators object to reading of Muslim prayer

Colin Bonini
Dave Lawson

DOVER — A reading of a Muslim prayer on the state Senate floor sparked outrage from some members of the Republican caucus and led to a spat involving several lawmakers Wednesday.

The Senate begins every day with a prayer and on Wednesday Tarik Ewis from Tarbiyah Mosque read a portion of the Quran, first in Arabic and then in English.

Sens. Colin Bonini and Dave Lawson walked out during the prayer, and upon return, Sen. Lawson blasted the reading.

“We heard from the Quran that advocates for our very demise and that’s brought into this chamber as a prayer to open this session. I take great exception to that,” he said.

“I fought for this country not to be damned by someone that comes in here and prays to their god for our demise. I think that’s despicable.”

  1. I think liberal Democrats along with illegal aliens need to be deported. Liberals have lost their minds and common sense, they need to stop destroying our country.

  3. Need more objections like this. Our Military personnel did not fight and die for this disrespect of our Constitution. Our Country was founded on Christian faith. Not a cult that wants to kill us.

  5. Islam is not just a religion, but a government and a way of life that is in direct conflict with our Constitution. The First Amendment does nothing to address this or allow this.

  6. STOP this NOW!!! Should NOT be allowed in any of our institutions under any circumstances.

Islam and Muslims will NEVER assimilate into our culture! Do you understand that their goal is the Caliphate and Sharia Law??? If you don't get this, you better learn quickly.

Do you really believe if you were in a Muslim country you would be able to pray a Christian prayer??? Hello NO!!! Wake up people. ENOUGH!!!

  8. Being a native of Delaware I am truly disgusted with the direction that the Blue Hen state has taken over the last 30 years or so. It has abandoned its conservative roots and is nearing its neighboring state of MD. The bottom of the barrel.

Where have the Pete DuPonts of Delaware gone?

  10. Thank you for standing ground by walking out. Quran has no place there and the reading should have not happen.

  13. This is only exposing facts and truth.

Religion has no business in a public platform. Government needs to remain secular, this is exactly why?

Do me a favor, if you think that only Christians are allowed to do what they want.... stop calling yourself and American, and start identifying as a theocratic religious extremist.

America, is a nation founded on liberty and freedom. Religion is one of those freedoms. Don't support other religions or religious ideas? That's O.K. Join the sane people and start supporting a secular government that protects religious liberty. Now THAT'S and American ideal.
