More Proof, You Can Throw Tens Of Millions Of Dollars Into New Schools But You Can't Change Reality

Tens of millions of dollars went into building the new Bennett High School but in the end what do you get, THUGS that just want to destroy it anyway.

The Board of Education still hasn't put out what happened today at the school but from what we do know is that there was a massive gang fight that forced the deployment of every single police officer available to respond.

Parents are furious. One said, "that's it, I'm getting the hell out of Salisbury". Rapes, murders, gangs, drugs, shootings and now massive fights in local schools.

Let me make myself very clear here. You cannot blame the educators. You can blame your Mayor and law enforcement for covering up CRIME. The public simply isn't aware of just how out of control things are any more. Elected officials come out bragging, saying crime is down. Well, are you people really that stupid? Will it take one of your kids ending up in the Hospital or even worse, killed before you stop listening to their brainwashing?

Salisbury Sucks, Period! Bring on the Section 8 Affordable Housing Boy Mayor. You people just wait and see how bad things get then! That school should've never been built! Someone said it best early on. Show me the grades have gone up on average. Building a new school isn't going to deliver better grades or behavior.

  1. Its all due to the fact they keep letting these thugs back in school!! Expulsion is the only answer and some real juvie time or jail time for those of age!

    1. Okay expulsion then what ? then when they get older and don't have an education they'll turn to dealing and drugs. Then you'll complain because your precious family members are overdosing or your tax money is taking care of them in prison.

      Delete
    2. You are then setting them up for failure by giving up on them. If they go to jail then they will have a record and when they finally get out they can't get a job. Vicious cycle. The old Bennett was falling apart and frankly a hazardous to one's health. Incidents happen everywhere. You just don't want it to be your city.

    3. It doesn't matter if they have an education or not. They are going to sell drugs of they want to. They need to locked up and keys thrown away. You can't blame no,one but the parents for letting their kids do what they want.

Time's a changing should be zero tolerance for disrupting the school day, one and done! 18? you're gone, maybe since high school aint working for ya night school will!
However when you do vote for school board members please don't vote for anyone who gets paid by the local/state government for their current job. or for anyone who does not have kids in the local public schools.
Let's make our schools function they way they should, it's supposed to be about educating not coddling!!

  3. With all due respect how do you expect any mayor to make an impact on kids who don't give a damn? Ever been to the neighborhoods around that school? Those kids grow up surrounded by crime and aren't taught any different. Lived there for years, we'd never see Salisbury City cars on patrol.

  5. 12:44 - Very good point about police on patrol. A story that should be told is how many officers are on the street during each shift. I do not have personal knowledge, but there are always a lot of cars in the SPD parking lot when I go by daily - and it is not always during shift changes. This is not a complaint about the officers. I believe they do the best they can with what they are given.

  6. 12:44, Your damn right I expect your Mayor to make an incredible impact! This is exactly what I meant long ago about having someone in the Mayor's Office who has past business experience. Students need to be PROUD of their school and surroundings. Of course PARENTS play a HUGE role in raising their children, BUT, when you have the majority of inmates being released into Salisbury, when drugs, gangs and crime go through the roof, your Mayor needs to be held accountable.

A solid Mayor would go to the Governor immediately and have those inmates returned to where they came from, mainly Baltimore.

Keep in mind people, CRIME BRINGS IN MONEY FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT. The Sheriffs Office LOVES drugs! Heck, they're more addicted to drugs then the DEALERS themselves. They keep ALL of the drug money and buy themselves Harley's, Guns, Equipment, Urban Assault Vehicles. Don't think for a second they want the King Pins rounded up and removed from our local society. IF they do so, there goes all their TOYS!

Proceeds from illicit drug sales going to fund assets like cars is a benefit to all of us tax payers. Better it paid for by drug dealer assets. LEOs can't buy guns with it. 15. 1:02, Shadow, I meant to say Kingpins, not dealers. If you call four Harley's an asset, well, OK. Everyone has the right to their opinion and I respect that. I think, however, you are missing the point. Drugs and crime are a BIG business. IF law enforcement wanted to shut down the drug trade here, all they'd have to do is the same they did with the Mafia years ago. However, they do NOT want it to go away or they'd start losing officers and perks like there's no tomorrow. When they finally get fed up they'll do something about it.

  16. Why aren't Culver and the County Council being held accountable too? Salisbury is part of the County yet you'd think everything depends on Jake Day and Duncan. Culver has given up his power to him and I don't know what value the Council is at this point.

More and more people, even community "leaders", are buying property outside of Wicomico County and claiming they live elsewhere 6 months of the year to avoid paying taxes here. The County is in such serious trouble. Culver is over his head. There is a real crisis coming and NO ONE seems to have the b@lls to say it or try and fix it!

  18. The biggest issue with dealing with school kids and crime is they get a slap on the wrist in court and poof back on the street. They REALLY have to do something terrible to face any sort of serious punishment and dependant on age it still isnt what an adult would face. This is what you get. Kids on house arrest that can go to public school. Kids with multiple charges can go to school. There is no cohesion between what happens outside school vs inside school. Kid sells dope gets in fights etc outside school it has no bearing on what goes on at the school. They do it in school they get suspended expelled etc. Its nothing like the real world for teens. The justice system hasnt reacted fast enough to the evolution of the teenage criminal so smack on the wrist and off you go. I dont hold an opinion on the school being built as it really has no influence on the culture of todays teenagers. Its a building they have to go to as society has structured itself.

  22. That's the reason why I had my kids in private school during their elementary school years. I could no longer afford the tuition so I had no choice but to send them to public school which was regretful.
They had a better education and a better classroom environment and we had the respect of the educators, they were taught morals and values that seem to be lacking in the public schools.
Both my boys went to Bennett, and they both were very happy when they got out. I was told about daily fights, sex under the stairwells and the bleachers, fights on a daily basis, and a school that seemed to me and my sons as a prison. All glass and steel, but no warmth.
The schools are a failure, and all they do is dump more money at the problem, but there is a limit on how much people can pay in property tax increases.
Dumping more money into the problem is not the answer. These problem kids need to be taken out of school. Don't care what race they are. They are there to learn. If they don't want to learn or be there, get rid of them.
Most of them end up in prison anyway. Most don't graduate, but are given a blank folder so they won't have their feelings hurt because they failed. Kind of like a participation trophy! They system has failed, and there is no reason to keep dumping good money to bad until they fix this mess!
This goes for all the schools in the county. There are fights in all of them on a daily basis. I don't totally blame the teachers. I think the parents deserve a hugh amount of the blame for they way these punks have turned out! We voted for an elected school board. When is this going to happen? As a tax payer and property tax payer in this county, we all need to know!!!!

Not holding someone responsible for their actions is the name of their game. I feel sorry for the conservative teachers. You are stuck in a position were you have little say in what goes on. Changing the rules so your school doesn't get a bad grade is NOT the answer. Holding people accountable for their actions is what is needed. If that means the trouble makers sit in a jail cell all day because they can't behave so be it!

The Salisbury School, Saint Francis, and Salisbury christian have a lot of kids from BOE members! Can't blame them, but this speaks volumes!!! And yes a lot of teachers out there are conservative and christian, but due to fear for their jobs and the political climate, they keep this to themselves. They are told what to say and not to say and are told what to teach. I used to ride with the kids from Saint Peter and Paul on the bus from Cambridge to Easton when I first moved from Easton to Cambridge to finish out my 9th grade school year. A lot of the kids on the bus stop were Teachers kids. One of them was my English teacher in 10th grade. This was back in 1977.

  45. The only one to blame is Obama and the DOJ. The sent out a memo about 2 years ago saying that they can't discipline African American Students due to they are being discipline at a higher percentage than other students!!!! Need I say more!!! The amazing thing is that today we have all of this high tech equipment in schools and we don't use it as we need too. I am we should show the videos of the little thugs and thugets acting up in the halls and the class rooms on a the school website and by other mean as needed. So them to the parents and if they don't get them in line then they are not allowed back in school!!!!

If they can't control them then we build special schools that resemble prisons for them to go to and they are they 24/7 where they will learn respect and how to act in society. The parents will loose all of the government benefits and will work to put them through the prison school. If they don't like it then they can go to Africa since they always refer to themselves as African American!!! Then they can really find out what poor is!! Joe it have been through schools during the day and it is disgusting the way they act!! They know that know one can touch them and they sure do take advantage of it. I feel sorry for the adminstrators and the teachers due to there hands are tied!!! One of these days a teacher or an administrator is going to be killed or severely disabled!!

I am sure that people are going to call me racist and that is there OPINION!!! I am simply going off life experiences in dealing with the African American community! I am tired of seeing white kids being bullied in school and on the streets and as usual if they have an issue it has to be a gang jumping one person!! They can't fight one on one!! The one thing I hope President Trump does is bring law and order back to our schools!!!! Joe I hope publish this and would like to know how many people agree with me!!

The last several mayors and police chiefs in that bury have not helped matters either. I'm not sure if you can totally blame the rank and file police officers since they have to do what they are told or else.

Regardless, the leadership there sucks and until that improves you will always have what you have always gotten.

  66. I was working it from the inside as the nurse. Everything was very controlled, proactive, and hands down this school has the best administrators! First responder time was under two minutes! With fire dept down the street its amazing how fast we received help!! There are 1500 students here and almost all of them are great kids.. From Hebron, Quantico, Salisbury, and other surrounding areas. Unfortunately in today's time there are many children with absent parent(s) and no discipline or accountability. I encourage ALL PARENTS to raise their voice and call the board of ed also regarding the change in cell phone policy. They are now allowed to openly carry them and drama thru Snapchat spreads like wildfire! It is ridiculius. Social media overuse by these millennials is really causing them so much stress, anxiety, aggression and overall worsening the social health of these kids!!

  67. 10:41 that is what happened at the alternative school yesterday (CHOICES) 2 or 3 fights there too. So now what???

It's called being sent to alternative school. That's what happens when you get into enough trouble. Yall act like nothing is ever done.
    April 6, 2017 at 10:41 AM

Send them to Alternative school? Do you mean like the boy from Bennett that attempted to rape that girl and was sent to Alternative School last year? This year he is right back in regular school at Parkside. Bet you didn't know that. He should have been sent to prison for attempted rape not alternative school.

  69. I have no doubt that everyone wants a remedies for these kinds of problems, but it is amazing in a very sad way how many of the commenters don't even realize their own part of the problem. The problems won't resolve when you have parents, teachers, students, admins, alumni... lashing out, name-calling, doing their own bullying of sorts. Just because maybe you come from an affluent home and are white doesn't mean that your choice of ill-mannered words isn't immature or bullying or a poor example to children. We all live in glass houses. It's just that some have varying degrees of tint. The only way to start resolving problems is by communication. If I sat in a room with people shouting and swearing it would NOT end up resolving anything. Sure, your rant MAY end up making you feel better since you vented for a moment, but true change isn't about a moments venting- it's about COMMUNICATION, coming to understand other people's PERSPECTIVE & needs, realizing the deficiencies in families and trying to brainstorm how to come together as a community. This isn't going to happen overnight. These issues didn't get to where they are overnight, either. And our own self-indulgent society/country is sliding down a slippery slope. We are locking up our own freedom as we take advantage of it. Angering the badger isn't the way to avoid the fight.
Also, I think the cell phone thing is getting out of hand too (again, taking advantage of the freedom) as our students should be at school for their education, not for Snapchat and Kik, but I do like that sometimes the videos that are recorded can provide proof of what happened. There can be problems though when it's not ALL recorded or not ALL shared and things are then taken out of context. Sometimes it's not bad parenting, folks, but sometimes it is. So many parents are absent from the home too many hours out of the day in today's society. We are not comprised of two parent, nuclear families with one working parent and one "homemaker/domestic engineer" (old terms, ay?). We are busy, busy families with both parents working, single-parent families, and sometimes the children are working to help pay the bills too. Everyone is tired.
The easy-access, cheap drugs are a problem that's growing at light speed and affecting all people, every race, age, income level, etc. Don't think that it's not your neighbor, friend, postal carrier, lawyer, your child, your parent, a sibling, person at the grocery store in an upscale neighborhood... it can be anyone. And that changes dynamics very quickly and intensely.
It also sounds like this particular event was an example of a child that had a child. THAT is no easy feat to take on. I've never been in those shoes, but I don't envy that young female. And I also don't expect ANY of these CHILDREN, with their underdeveloped brains to fully understand things or to always make the right choices. That is WHY, as humans we PARENT our kids. We should be parenting them into their mid-20's when their brains have finally matured (not necessarily their behavior- that's a separate thing). We need to find better ways to be involved in the lives of our youth.
Good luck to all of you. We only lived in the community for three years and have only been away for about 2.5 years now, but we enjoyed the small town feel of the Salisbury area. We definitely didn't like the fighting, though. We used to watch the kids in our little townhouse community "play" punching and kicking "games". It tore me UP. I used to go outside and tell them to quit and go find something else to do. I could have been assaulted -or worse- but they did disperse. I also spoke to them like human beings- but like they were kids and I was the adult, as that was the case.
I don't know, people. I don't have the answers. We now live just outside of Baltimore and it is NOT any better here.
Take a deep breath, let it out slowly and hold on for the ride.

  70. please comment Joe, once upon a time i seem to remember reading, perhaps even on your site(whether in an article or a readers' comment, i can't remember), that worcester county has some regulation that does not allow parolees to be released from ECI into worcester county so they are bussed to and released in sby. does that sound familiar?

Thugs are thugs, so why bother decorating their surroundings with unnecessary creature comforts they don't appreciate anyway? Waste of taxpayer money in every way.

  74. 742 for starters the word is honest not honist. Even my spell checker caught this snafu! Second the appropriate word is effect not affect. Effecting others is different from affecting change. For a school teacher's husband or wife, your literacy level is disturbing.

Third, to answer your question: YES! I would change the policies quickly, instantly. You gave all the reasons for them to be changed in your badly written verb.

  75. 4:04 PM Kate Seth. I get the impression by her long lecture that she is self important and thinks her opinion matters, a lot. Either that or she had nothing better to do with her work time than lecture us on a blog.

Since she thinks she has all the answers, then why isn't she initiating them and solving all our problems for us?

And the best part is she doesn't even live here anymore.

  79. My son Brett is the best baseball player to ever walk the halls of Bennett High School. He has already got colleges and even the Houston Astros looking at him. I Love that my son is batting .636 this season and came down to ask me to throw BP in the cage because he wants to work on the pitch to the outer half. No one has ever came close to topping his batting averages where ever he plays. Kid works hard never satisfied. I've got a feeling they will be retiring his jersey on graduation night. We need more kids like him because it's difficult for him to carry the team every year. I didn't let him play little league because he would have hurt someone. Every year in Travel Ball they made him play up because he was much better than everyone in his division. They asked me to be the next coach Varsity at Bennett and I told them that I would have to think about it. With Brett playing short stop, batting clean up and me coaching we would be unstoppable.

Expel the punks then they can stay home with there welfare mommys.

    April 5, 2017 at 1:36 PM

Little do you know, the School Board is required by LAW to educate these little thugs even if they are expelled. That's right, a school teacher has to go to the welfare mommies home and give that child an education by teaching him one on one. So tell me why it's a good idea to expel them?

My question is, if they public schools are so great, then why are so many teachers kids in the private schools?

You are correct. The Phys Ed teacher and field hockey coach at Parkside sends her daughter to a private school. Can't say I blame her.

When will the Mayor see its a time for a change in SPD. It will be a little to late six months from the election. Barb's needs to resign her position regardless if the Mayor refuses "again" to take her resignation. A little respect for her that she was willing to see all the issues and get out of the way for positive change. But the Mayor refused resignation and we are left with things like today and officer's lives at stake as well as our community. I know this school is in the county, but these thugs are from the city. It will get worse people unless you demand a change. She is way to soft and he seems to think being a soft Chief will get him votes. This will backfire Jake. And I read before in a comment there is someone up and coming that will crush you in the elections. I sure hope so. You better start either making changes or start submitting resumes Jake.

What do you think is going on over at the fire department. Hoppes is buying more and more equipment and now hiring more and more paid firemen. Funny fires are going way down and crime is going way up, but Jake Day is too stupid to know where his priorities are.

    April 5, 2017 at 12:52 PM

I agree with you Joe. This city needs a strong mayor and it can't be a pansy like Jake Day, a homo like Jim Ireton or a wench like Barrie Tilghman. You should have ran again. If you don't run again do you have any ideas of who could it be. Remember NO DEMOCRATS!
