Sick leave bill would hit OC hard

Legislation that would require employers to provide sick leave to their workers received a favorable report from the Senate Finance Committee on Wednesday, following its passage in the House of Delegates last Friday.

Under current law, Maryland does not require businesses to provide employees with sick leave of any kind.

Delegate Mary Beth Carozza voted against the bill last Friday because of her concerns about the impact on seasonal employers.

As proposed, the bill would require employers with more than 14 employees to provide paid sick and safe leave, which would be earned at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked.

  3. Well, if everything stays the same in Annapolis - then the OC business owners have 1 year to use their brains and figure this out. Either have few than 15 employees or not. If its 15 or more - figure it out!

All the Moriarty's out there with their "Negative Waves" (Kelly's Heroes 1970's reference - look it up on Al Gore's interwebs).

Its High noon on a Munday - now 3 1/2 days until St. Patties Day!!!!!!

  4. No! say it ain't so!!
Are you saying that people who run businesses for 6 months in Ocean City, where they will sell you French fries and a soda for TWENTY DOLLARS, or a box of f'ing POPCORN for $15, are going to be HURT (!?) if they have to give a HOUR A WEEK in sick leave for their employees??
What? They are down to their last 10 million?
Maybe they can't get but just 15 foreign exchange students in the 2 bedroom house, 1 bath ghetto dumphouse they rent for $5-7,000 A MONTH (!) and they will have to keep (God knows it hurts) last year's Jaq one more year?
The money they say they are DESPERATE to have amounts to rather insignificant money compared to their total payroll and their total seasonal income.
More whining about how bad life is for people with vacation homes in Florida and South Carolina, drive several high end cars, have boats docked in Miami and O.C., and send their kids to Duke.
I wish I could say I feel their pain.

  5. Most bills are great in theory, but seriously screw things up when enacted.
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So true in this case. Most businesses cannot afford to pay someone when they're not working or afford not to hire someone else if they are off for 8-12 weeks. If the government wants to mandate it, then the government should pay for it.

  6. Mathias' exemption would still screw the businesses!
Carozza's exemption would have saved the seasonal businesses!

  8. They shouldn't even pass this bill but if they do everyone including OC businesses, farmers and nonprofits all have to pay it not just most businesses.

  9. A business is a business. They have a year long business license so they have to pay what any other business pays. This is like a bill exempts politians. This is BS they have to pay if they meet the bills requirements. These businesses earn more in 6 months than a lot of local businesses earn in a year. What was Obama and Democrats slogan, " Spread the Wealth "?
