Go To Work Sick Or Stay Home & Lose Money?; Debate Over Paid Sick Leave

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Go to work sick or stay home and get well?

That’s a high priority question in Annapolis right now as Marylanders rally for and against paid sick leave.

And there is more than one option on the table, as thousands of Maryland employees chose whether to work sick or run the risk of losing their jobs.

It’s now cold and flu season, which means this is the time of year when Marylanders wonder what they are going to do if they get sick.

  1. If people already get PTO, the company should be exempt from this new law! Let's NOT impose new costs on businesses...

  2. why have someone come to work sick and make everyone sick? stay home. have some consideration for others! it's not always about you. and shame on those employers who don't offer paid sick time.

  3. I don't understand all those people who think the "employer" is responsible for every aspect of their employees' lives. Paid sick leave, paid maternity leave, paid vacation - with the employees away from work for these paid activities how does the employer/company earn the money necessary to pay for these benefits?

  5. It's a benefit of a company...leave it that way, the Government doesn't need to be involved! Some provide it some don't!

  8. I have seen people go to work sick because they only allow 8 missed days a year and they told my one friend the doctors notes didn't count. This was walmart..other major companies use it to find ways to fire people who they want gone or have accumulated so many raises that they fire them to hire a lesser paid person..Wal-Mart has done this a lot..they told my friend he could be rehired in six months at a starting rate..he had been there 2 half years and accumulated some raises..they have done this to a lot of employees.

  9. Funny how jobs that have paid accrued sick leave - i.e., local, state and Fed GOVERNMENT jobs are frowned upon OR even made the pun of bad jokes.

    Yet here we are..

  10. Give everyone 10 paid sick days a year and everyone will be sick 10 days a year.

Paid sick days are hazardous to your health.

  11. If you are sick, stay home and avoid infecting your fellow employees. It's your own moral decision, and it's not your bosses fault you got sick. He owes you nothing but your benefits you both agreed to when you took the job. If that was one of them, fine. If not, fine.

Now, shut up and get back to work!

  12. I have held jobs in the past where a certain percentage of hours worked contributed to vacation time and sick days. So it is not a new concept by any means. Maybe in this area where the sunshine received is a day old but not in the civilized world.
