MIKULSKI FIGHTS FOR BEACH REPLENISHMENT

Senator visited Ocean City to meet with local leaders and inspect repairs to Ocean City’s Fishing Pier
OCEAN CITY – U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.) today continued her Maryland Jobs Tour on the Eastern Shore, joining Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan to inspect repairs to Ocean City’s Fishing Pier and beach sand dunes. Investments in Ocean City’s coastal infrastructure are critical to Maryland’s tourism economy.

“I’m here on Maryland’s Eastern Shore to talk jobs, jobs, jobs,” Senator Mikulski said. “In Ocean City, I’ve seen first-hand the impact that public investments in our coastal infrastructure have had in rebuilding and sustaining Maryland’s tourism economy. According to estimates from the Corps, beach replenishment has protected Ocean City from more than $900 in damages, and saved Ocean City from Superstorm Sandy. I will never stop fighting so that the people of Maryland have a government on their side, supporting jobs today and jobs tomorrow.”

As Maryland and the nation grapple with severe weather events, including Super Storm Sandy, beach replenishment programs protect jobs along with billions of dollars in public and private infrastructure. Beach renourishment along the Atlantic Coast in Ocean City provides hurricane, erosion and coastal flooding protection for coastal communities. From 1991 to 2016, it has prevented over $900 million in damages to businesses and homes.

Senator Mikulski has fought for federal investments in Coastal protection and erosion prevention measures, including providing $14 million in emergency supplemental funding following Super Storm Sandy.

  1. At what point is the taxpayer going to be excused from funding this. The people that own the property along the coast need to be paying for this.

  2. 1:07. These investments are more than made up for by new and increasing tax revenue. This is how government should work!

  3. The only thing Mikulski has "fought" for is to get in line first at the feeding trough.

Which is about the cost of one nice wool pantsuit in a 20 petite. And Sandy, if you weren't following, spared O.C. on its own.

  5. The whole beach replenishment program has ruined oc. I know, but the beach is still there, but the shore break is very dangerous and has been since this started.

  6. I'd like to see Mikulski actually "fight" when she uses the words. I'd put money on her bare knuckle brawls, too.

  7. 900 million that is. And storms don't have to make landfall to impact the coast with wind, waves, and flooding. Please leave these type of topics to the thinking adults in the room.

  8. I only want tax dollars spent on things that help me - no one else!

  9. If she wants to fight for jobs - she should lower taxes and the job killing climate in the entire country - neither of which are dumbocrat ways!

  12. Regular people should not be paying for this, the waterfront property owners and Ocean City should be paying for their own landscaping. No taxpayer is paying for my new sod or trees that the storm ruined in my yard.

  15. 4:07 The regular people should stay off my beach if I am paying for it. How's that work out for you and tax revenue for the county and state?

  16. 4:07 With all the money that has been spent by the taxpayers pumping sand onto the beaches there should be no private beaches. The little man should have full access to them.

  20. They get way too much tax money from OC to let it wash away. By tax money I mean the 6% they collect on every dollar.

  22. She tried walking down to the water, but when she did, a dozen people ran over and tried to push her back into the ocean.
