Russia Doubling Nuclear Warheads

New multiple-warhead missiles to break arms treaty limit

Russia is doubling the number of its strategic nuclear warheads on new missiles by deploying multiple reentry vehicles that have put Moscow over the limit set by the New START arms treaty, according to Pentagon officials.

A recent intelligence assessment of the Russian strategic warhead buildup shows that the increase is the result of the addition of multiple, independently targetable reentry vehicles, or MIRVs, on recently deployed road-mobile SS-27 and submarine-launched SS-N-32 missiles, said officials familiar with reports of the buildup.

“The Russians are doubling their warhead output,” said one official. “They will be exceeding the New START [arms treaty] levels because of MIRVing these new systems.”

The 2010 treaty requires the United States and Russia to reduce deployed warheads to 1,550 warheads by February 2018.

  1. What's even more interesting is there are many nuclear missiles that are missing in both US and Russia. These deficits have been going on since the end of the Cold War. Who knows where they are. That's a scary prospect also.

  4. Sounds like it's time to re-institute "Chrome-Dome"! We have the equipment available and our military needs a real '"Big-Stick" defensive purpose. Rebuild a bunch of the BUFF's out at Davis-Monthan and put them back in the air. The Soviet Union crumbled while we were running "Chrome-Dome" before....we need to give them another taste of our "Whoop-Ass"!

  8. do you really think a nother country is going to listen to what the u.s. has to say, anyway, what right do we have to tell another country what it can and cannot do we have turned into a third world country, indebted to countries that could care whether we succeed or fail all of the u.s. companies that transferred their operations overseas should be penalized with high tariffs that would make those operations unprofitable and bring those jobs back to the american people on the other hand look for tax breaks and incentives to make this work this will help cut down on the unemployment rate and take many off of the welfare rolls, which is causing the greatest burden on hardworking middle class this may be off of the blog subject ,but let's get the gov't back working for the people, not filling lobuists and politicians pockets God bless America my country, right or wrong
