Back in October of 2014 Salisbury University purchase around 3 acres of land with a lavish home on the Nanticoke River that included a large garage with an apartment above.
The home was owned by a Salisbury University faculty member Tom Horton and his then Wife, heiress to the Folgers Coffee empire.
Being that the two parted their ways, the home went up for sale for $650,000.00. From what we're told there were two offers on the property, aside from the University but the offers were for much less than $650,000.00 and the owners refused to take the offers.
In the end the University, (get this) paid the full list price of $650,000.00 to create what they are now calling their new "Environmental Field Laboratory".
When the University confronted the community they stated they wanted the property to conduct environmental studies as well as allow their Students to kayak on the Nanticoke River.
The University then exposed that the STATE would step in after TWO years and give the University a Grant to pay for the property. Many residents challenged the University because they want to keep it as a residential property and claimed they may hire a full time grounds keeper to live there. Uh Huh.
Once the State kicks in the funding, the property will then come off the tax base. There was discussion about parking as well as sewage and the University stated they'd just have to clean it out more often.
Residents have shown concern in Mardela Springs that the University simply bought the property so the higher ups have a place to go on weekends and in the summer as a retreat, more so than an environmental lab.
Isn't it just amazing how your tax dollars work in the state of Maryland and the educational system. Making so much money, (or should I say, taking so much money) and creating resorts for themselves.
May we have pictures?
ReplyDelete11:26, I'll work on that but honestly, what does it matter. Do you think the owner of Folgers Coffee would live in a dive?
ReplyDeletewhat's the address?
ReplyDeletewaterfront propery for only 650k. I doubt its a huge mcmansion
ReplyDeleteCow Island?
ReplyDeleteTHERE NEEDS TO BE A STATE INVESTIGATION INTO THIS WHEN HOGAN GETS ELECTED, THERE IS A HUGE CONFLICT OF INTEREST HERE AND SOME FRIEND OF A FRIEND IS GETTING KICK BACKS FROM IT?
ReplyDeleteWell well,,,, the hypocrisy... Tom Horton is the radical green who goes around bashing the folks who produce our food. Here he had a home right on the water all along.
ReplyDeleteI belive it's in Riverton.
ReplyDelete^^^^Believe you are right about Riverton. Interesting that Horton was married to a coffee magnate. Thought coffee growers have been accused of raping the land they grow on. Or If she was a Folger, maybe she just ground the beans?
ReplyDeleteFYI Tim Horton's Coffee (primarily bought in Canada) is freakin amazing.
ReplyDeleteNothing short of fraud, theft and conspiracy. Damn shame marcellio isnt legit.
ReplyDelete11479 Riverton RD Mardela springs
ReplyDelete3541 SF house built on 2.92 acres in 2006. Hypocrisy at its worse. Horton has condemned things just like this by his green writings, like Pretl, Grout, Johannson, and other environmental nuts.
I also heard SU bought a new house for its President in Nithsdale...is that true? If there was a story about that I must have missed it.
ReplyDelete2:07. Not true. Dudley-escbach and her husband bought a home in Harbor Pointe as their permanent residence.
ReplyDeleteDon't think a coffee connection but Horton's ex (Jennifer Budge) is also the ex of Mayo Shattuck-Constellation Energy- who is the now husband of the ex cheerleader Molly Shattuck charged with rape or whatever in DE recently.
ReplyDeleteThe Riverton Rd home was purchased by SUFI Holdings, a MD limited liability company according to the deed which can be found at mdlandrec.net
ReplyDeletemaybe the county will do a better job of paving the road and keeping the branches cut back, since Mardela has to fight with the county roads to take care of that.
ReplyDeleteTom Horton works for the environmental department at the university. This state will give the environmentalists anything they ask for. Unbelievable corruption.
ReplyDeleteThe Left wing liberal way.
ReplyDeleteIf this is the property I am thinking of it was bought from the Snyder family who had lovingly restored the old farm home. Horton went on and on about it. They thought that they had sold to someone who would cherish the home and then the buyer promptly tore it down. It was heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteHorton, like his pal Pretl, lived in a mc-mansion in the critical area where both bozos don't want the rest of us to build a home.
ReplyDeleteThis story needs to go to Hogans office.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteCamp Janet!
You are correct about the Snyder family being previous owners. How sad for the residents of Riverton to have this pushed down their throats. Honest, hard working, TAX PAYING people having to put up with the under handed dishonesty of a few for personal gain. What do you want to bet Horton isn't hired as the grounds keeper so he'll be able to live in his own house for nothing.
ReplyDeleteIf I didn't have to pay taxes on a huge income, I could afford waterfront property as well. & all the houses in the immediate vicinity of SU. There's more up for sale, waiting for them to scoop them up as they have all the other surrounding properties.
ReplyDeleteThis place has electronically controlled gate entrance, large swimming pool, 2 fireplaces and large dock. So, what does SU need this place for? Students kayaking? Yeah right, outright BS, but sure sound nice - kind of like It's For the Children BS, BS & Triple BS
ReplyDeleteThe photo shows a place much bigger than the 3541 sq ft stated in a previous comment. That area has been a well kept secret for many years.
ReplyDeleteThere goes my respect for Tom Horton.
