As The Burning Platform's Jim Quinn explains,

it really isn’t hard to connect the dots and see the real economy in the real world, outside Wall Street, is a disaster and getting worse by the hour. Below are a bunch of dots that have been issued in the last 24 hours. Here are the facts...

Real disposable income has risen at a 1.8% annual rate over the last four months. Meanwhile, real consumer spending has increased at a 2.4% annual rate over the last four months. I thought all those jobs Obama talks about should result in wages. Why is disposable personal income so pitiful if the unemployment rate is really 5.9%? And of course, these figures are based upon a fake inflation rate of less than 2%. We all know it is 5% or higher.

Obama Lectures America About the Justified Anger Towards Law Enforcement in Minority Communities

Tuesday at Copernicus Community Center in Chicago, IL, President Barack Obama addressed the riots and protests going on throughout the country in reaction to the grand jury announcement that Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson will not face charges for the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by justifying the anger as, "It's rooted in reality, " but condemning the violence as non-productive.

Partial transcript as follows:

A grand jury made a decision yesterday that upset a lot of people. And as I said last night, the frustrations that we have seen, are not just about a particular incident. They have deep roots in many communities of color, who have a sense that our laws are not always being enforced uniformly or fairly. That may not be true everywhere. And it's certainly not true for the vast majority of law enforcement officials, but that's an impression that folks have and it's not just made up. It's rooted in reality.

Now as I said last night, there are productive ways of responding. And expressing those frustrations and there are destructive ways of responding. Burning buildings, torching cars, destroying property, putting people at risk, that's destructive and there's no excuse for it. Those are criminal acts. People should be prosecuted if they engage in criminal ablgs. But what we also saw, although it doesn't get as much attention in the media, was people gathering in overwhelmingly peaceful protests, here in Chicago, in New York, in Los Angeles, other cities. We have scene young people who are organizing and people beginning to have real conversations about how do we change the situation so that there's more trust between law enforcement and some of these communities. And those are are necessary conversations to have.

13 Facts About Ferguson the Media Will Never Tell You

According to protesters who erupted in violence after a grand jury declined to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., this was the case of a white policeman shooting an unarmed black teenager with his hands in the air in a community plagued by racial tension.

That's an account promoted by many in the mainstream media as well. But here are several facts about the case that are harder to find:

1. Surveillance video showed that shortly before the confrontation, 18-year-old Brown stole cigarillos from a convenience store and shoved a clerk who tried to stop him.

2. The autopsy report showed that Brown had marijuana in his system when he died.

3. Officer Wilson, driving to the call of a medical emergency, first encountered Brown walking in the middle of a street and told Brown and his friend to walk on the sidewalk. Brown responded with an expletive.

MO Lt. Gov: Officials Must Explain 'Under Oath' Why National Guard Stood By as Ferguson Burned

Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, a Republican, is demanding that the state’s Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon offer a public explanation as to why he told the National Guard which he had previously mobilized to stand down in Ferguson, Missouri, on Monday night as the city burned in riots.

On Fox News on Tuesday morning, Kinder told anchor Martha MacCallum that Nixon kept the National Guard away as Ferguson burned—and questioned whether he did so in coordination with top officials from President Barack Obama’s administration. At a Tuesday press conference in response to a question from Breitbart News’ Kerry Picket, Nixon said that Kinder’s questions were “false and absurd” and that “politics has nothing to do with what anyone up here is doing.”

Kinder, in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News early on Tuesday evening after the Nixon presser, said that Nixon owes the people of Missouri and specifically Ferguson an explanation as to why he held back the National Guard from stopping the looting, rioting, and burning of businesses and terrorizing of people.

“All I did was ask the question, and he says it’s false. Well, okay, then explain yourself, governor,” Kinder said. “Explain why you gave the order that I supported a week ago to mobilize the guard, to declare a state of emergency, and then at the critical moment you’re nowhere to be found by the mayor of Ferguson who’s desperately calling me in the wee hours of this morning, desperately calling the Speaker of the Missouri House and the floor leader of the Missouri House, Tim Jones and John Diehl, and asking for somebody in state government to stand up and give him some help. All executive power and all command of the Missouri National Guard rests with the Missouri chief executive so none of us could do anything as Ferguson burned. So this mayor made this desperate call as he was watching from his back porch as his city burned.”

Senior Democratic senator says his party screwed up by pushing Obamacare in 2009 because only '5 per cent' of the population appreciated it

The Senate Democrats' top message man said Tuesday that his party erred five years ago by putting the Obamacare law ahead of economic priorities.

At a Washington news conference, New York Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer conceded that the vast majority of Americans were relatively happy with their employer-provided health insurance in 2009.

The health care overhaul's message, Schumer explained, was aimed at about 5 per cent of the electorate: those who lacked insurance and who voted.

'To aim a huge change in mandate at such a small percentage of the electorate made no political sense,' he said.

Although charges were announced last year with great fanfare in an alleged “pay to play” scandal involving secret gifts of cash, travel and entertainment, and campaign contributions, the case against numerous former Pennsylvania Turnpike officials ended quietly Thursday with plea deals and no jail time....

Former Pennsylvania Turnpike CEO Joseph Brimmeier and former COO George Hatalowich were sentenced Thursday to 60 months of probation, a fine of $2,500 and 250 hours of community service. The state is not requesting restitution in either case....

Last year, prosecutors charged numerous former turnpike officials, a contractor and former state senator with being involved in what they alleged was a wide-ranging bid-rigging scheme. Defense attorneys for several of the men charged, however, said the state couldn’t prove a “quid pro quo,” that gifts or contributions were given for specific contracts or favors.

Sixty-one attorney general's employees were disciplined two weeks ago. Some transmitted sexually explicit emails as late as this summer, the office said. Of those, six were fired, two resigned and 11 were suspended. Others received reprimands or were ordered to take sexual harassment classes.

"There should be a full review of every agency," said Harrisburg activist Gene Stilp. He believes that could be done by the state Inspector General, since it involves the use of state equipment and email systems.

Obama ‘potentially’ hip deep in IRS scandal

2,500 new documents ID'd in White House-IRS taxpayer harassment cases

In a shocking revelation, the Treasury Inspector General has identified some 2,500 documents that “potentially” show taxpayer information held by the Internal Revenue Service being shared with President Obama’s White House.

The discovery was revealed to the group Cause of Action, which has sued for access to any of the documents. It charges that the IRS and White House have harassed taxpayers.

In an email from the Justice Department’s tax office, an official revealed the high number of documents, suggesting that the White House was hip deep in probes of taxpayers, likely including conservatives and Tea Party groups associated with the IRS scandal.

THE MONITORED OFFICE: DYSTOPIAN FUTURE WORKPLACE OR EFFICIENT BUSINESS OF TOMORROW?

Biometrics and wearables are making their way into the workplace as employers modernise access control and time-keeping. But with no legal framework in place, does this trend benefit businesses or violate employees’ rights?

The pressures facing businesses today are enormous. The economic crisis, competition in the marketplace and the continued rise of the data-driven culture mean employees are expected to work smarter and faster than ever before.

Against this backdrop, it is little wonder that technology that promises to help people do just that is generating excitement in boardrooms across the world. From Coca Cola to Apple and hundreds of companies in between, biometric and wearable technology is being explored to make businesses run quicker, safer and in a more cost effective way.

Early adopters suggest these types of technology are having a positive impact on performance but critics warn that a surveillance culture can lead to stress, sickness absence and higher staff turnover. So where should the line be drawn? And what can you do if you don’t fancy working in an office where Big Brother is watching you at all times?

Ferguson Riots, Immigration Reform Framing Coming Civil War Around Race

Establishment attempting to direct spirit of nation into a destructive revolution

Media focus on racial division diverting anger away from tyrannical government

Chaos has engulfed Ferguson, Missouri as the mainstream media is directing national attention to divisive racial issues at a time of rising tyranny in America.

Sensational revelations about government corruption are becoming a regular occurrence under the Obama administration. Ordinary Americans are being targeted while known terrorists are escorted through security. Kidnappers, rapists, and murderers are being released from prison; an action sanctioned by the President of the United States. The BATF allows guns to find their way to Mexican drug lords, while the federal government is fighting to disarm American citizens. Mega-banks launder billions of dollars worth of drug money.

Amidst this flurry of rampant corruption, Obamacare architect Johnathan Gruber admitted on video that “lack of transparency” was crucial in passing Obamacare and fool “stupid American voters” into accepting it.

Was Murdered Ferguson Man a Grand Jury Witness?

Questions are swirling over the unexplained murder of DeAndre Joshua, found dead in his car on Tuesday morning, with some speculating that the 20-year-old may have been the victim of a retribution killing for testifying in front of the grand jury in the Michael Brown shooting case.

Joshua was found dead inside a parked car near Ferguson’s Canfield Green Apartments around 9 a.m. Tuesday, just two blocks from where Brown was gunned down by Officer Darren Wilson.

According to one resident, four individuals were overheard discussing plans to kill somebody on Monday night.

The New York Daily News reports that Joshua’s family is, “positive his death is tied to the demonstrations over a grand jury’s decision not to indict Michael Brown’s killer.”

Joshua was described as a “good kid” who was not into drugs and had a steady job.

“DeAndre Joshua, 20, fits the social profile of an eye-witness who gave a police/FBI statement and testified before the Grand Jury in the Mike Brown shooting case,” writes the Conservative Treehouse blog. “He was an employed black male, with no history of drug use or illicit behavior. He was also a friend of Dorian Johnson who is currently under protection.”

A Facebook post by Johnson, who was with Michael Brown at the time of the shooting, appears to confirm that the two knew each other.

The blog also claims that many witnesses who gave testimony to the grand jury which confirmed Officer Wilson’s version of events “were threatened by the local Canfield Greens community.”

Shocker: Black Caucus Denounces Ferguson Grand Jury

Slap in the face of our judicial system

Congressional Black Caucus denounces Ferguson grand jury

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus on Monday called the grand jury decision not to indict Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson a “slap in the face” for those seeking justice for the death of Michael Brown.

“The Ferguson grand jury’s decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown is a miscarriage of justice,” CBC Chair Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio) said in a statement released after the decision was announced late Monday evening in Missouri. “It is a slap in the face to Americans nationwide who continue to hope and believe that justice will prevail.”

And never mind that her statement is a slap in the face of our judicial system and the 12 courageous jurors (9 white, three black) who decided unanimously after hearing all the evidence that there were no grounds for any charges against Officer Wilson.

“This decision seems to underscore an unwritten rule that Black [sic] lives hold no value; that you may kill Black [sic] men in this country without consequences or repercussions,” Fudge’s statement continued.

Shakespeare First Folio discovered in French library

A Shakespeare First Folio has been discovered in a library in a small French town where it lay undiscovered for two centuries.

It is only the second known copy in France of a publication that is seen as one of the most valuable books in the English language and which can sell for millions on the rare occasions a copy comes up for auction.

The librarian in the northern town of Saint-Omer, near Calais, said he came across the book in September when he was selecting books for an upcoming exhibition on historic links between the local region and England.

“It was sitting on a shelf alongside other books by English authors,” Rémy Cordonnier, who runs the library’s rare books collection, told the Telegraph.

It was missing the frontispiece and the portrait of Shakespeare that are the hallmark of the around 800 copies of the First Folio, which set down 18 plays for the first time, that were originally printed in 1623, seven years after the playwright's death.

The Plague of Grubers

Jonathan Gruber, MIT economist and paid architect of Obamacare, has shocked and disgusted many Americans. In 2013, he explained to a University of Pennsylvania audience: “This bill was written in a tortured way to make sure (the Congressional Budget Office) did not score the mandate as taxes. If CBO scored the mandate as taxes, the bill dies.” He added that the “lack of transparency is a huge political advantage.” Most insulting were his previous statements that “the American voter is too stupid to understand” and his boast of Obamacare’s “exploitation of the lack of economic understanding of the American voter.”

We recall that back in 2010, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi infamously said, “We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.” That comment was just as insightful as her response to a CNSNews.com reporter who asked, “Madam Speaker, where specifically does the Constitution grant Congress the authority to enact an individual health insurance mandate?” Unable to respond intelligently, Speaker Pelosi gave her best political response: “Are you serious? Are you serious?” When asked recently about Gruber, Pelosi said: “I don’t know who he is. He didn’t help write our bill.” She was quickly caught in a lie because during the 2009 health care debate, she mentioned Gruber’s analysis at a news conference.

Where the Democrats should convene in 2016

The Democrats have scratched Birmingham, Ala., off their list of potential convention cities, and that’s probably a good thing: The last time the Democrats put on a big to-do in Birmingham, their supremo was a guy called Bull Connor and there were fire hoses involved. Birmingham has mellowed out a great deal since then, but, still, not a part of Democratic history that they’re going to want to remind people about. Phoenix got cut, too, though the local Greyhound station would make an excellent place to talk about the merits of President Obama’s amnesty diktat. That leaves three finalists to host JackassFest 2016: New York City, Philadelphia, and Columbus, Ohio. One of these things is not like the others . . .

I’ve argued for years that political parties should hold their conventions in the city that best represents their policies. For Republicans, that would probably be somewhere in the Houston suburbs, or possibly San Diego, one of the few big U.S. cities where Republican mayors are not extinct. Or maybe Indian Wells, Calif., a gated citadel full of older white people fond of golf and low capital-gains taxes. The Libertarian party should hold its convention at the Boot Track Café in Loving County, Texas, the least populated place in the United States; the café is closed at the moment, but I am sure that they would open it up to give the Libertarian party a place where its members — both of them — can be lonely together.

**Update** Troopers Conducting Death Investigation into Missing Elderly Millsboro Woman

Millsboro-The Delaware State Police have cancelled a Gold Alert issued for a missing Millsboro woman after she was located deceased in the tributary waters of Rehoboth Bay.
Mary "Lorraine" Lappa was the focus of a Gold Alert that was issued Wednesday evening after a neighbor reported her missing.  The investigation revealed Ms. Lappa was supposed to leave her house Wednesday in order to travel to New Castle County to spend Thanksgiving with relatives.  When the neighbors went to Ms. Lappa's residence around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday to turn some lights on, they found her purse with her car keys and cell phone still inside the house as well as the car still in the driveway, but Ms. Lappa was nowhere to be found.  Out of concern for her welfare, the neighbors contacted the relatives in the Wilmington area and found out she was overdue and immediately notified state police.
Troopers assigned to the Criminal Investigations Unit, K9 Division, and Aviation Unit (Trooper 2), as well as members of the Indian River Fire Company combed the area through the evening hours and again this morning, but were unsuccessful in locating Ms. Lappa.  A reverse 9-1-1 call was placed around 10:30 a.m. to residents in the surrounding area of her address and information was updated on the Delaware State Police Newsroom Facebook page alerting viewers to be on the lookout for Ms. Lappa.
Around 11:40 a.m. this morning, a resident of the area assisting in the search, located a body off the shore of the tributary waters near the development.  Members of the Indian River Fire Company were contacted and recovered the female who was identified as Ms. Lappa.  Ms. Lappa was removed from the scene by the Medical Examiner at the Division of Forensic Science and the investigation is on-going by criminal investigators.  No foul play is suspected.

Nothing Has Changed - And That's The Problem

Playing monetary games has done nothing to eliminate moral hazard.

If we step back and look at the past six years since the global financial meltdown of 2008, we see that in terms of financial and political power, nothing has changed--and that's the problem. If nothing has changed structurally, then none of the problems that caused the meltdown have truly been addressed.

All that's changed is the vast expansion of monetary games has masked the dysfunctional reality that the same old vested interests that had a death-grip on wealth and power in 2008 have tightened their death-grip in the past six years.

Here's the problem facing every nation and trading bloc:

1. Vested interests institutionalized moral hazard, separating their gains from the consequences of taking risks. This is also known as privatized gains, socialized losses: vested interests reaped the gains from risky speculative bets, but then passed the staggering losses onto the central banks and taxpayers while keeping the gains.

2. The vested interests control the machinery of governance, so there is no way the central state will force the vested interests to absorb the losses that are rightfully theirs. Instead of de-institutionalizing moral hazard, governments have spewed thousands of pages of complicated regulations, in effect, grudgingly nudging the barn door half-closed after the horses of systemic risk galloped away in 2008.

Republicans Make A Slick Move

Congressional Republicans are considering a hybrid approach to avoiding a government shutdown but also stopping President Obama's immigration plan. The Wall Street Journal reports they are studying a so-called "cromnibus." The bill would fund the government for the rest of 2015 except for the Homeland Security Department. DHS would stay on a short-term continuing resolution as a way to keep U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services from carrying out Obama's executive action. Members find they can't de-fund USCIS directly because it pays for itself with user fees.

Statist Economics At Work: The Colossal Waste Of George Bush’s Mandatory Ethanol Standard

The federal government’s mandate to require Americans to use expensive, inefficient biofuels is so broken and dysfunctional it can’t even decide the ideal target amount of production.

On Friday, the Environmental Protection Agency again announced that it would not determine the amount of ethanol and biofuels required to be mixed into every American’s fuel tank for 2014 by the Energy Independence and Security Act. In 2005, Congress mandated that alternative fuels, primarily corn-based ethanol, progressively be added to gasoline and diesel and that the EPA annually adjust the targets originally set by Congress as needed. Now that 2014 is almost over, the EPA has failed again to clarify the standards. Friday’s non-decision should remind us again of some of the reasons why it’s high time Congress repeal what some have accurately labeled a “Soviet-style production quota system” for the nation’s fuel supply.

1. The Renewable Fuel Standard hurts drivers, eaters, taxpayers and the environment. Because of the RFS, Americans have to pay more for fuel than they normally would without the mandate, and the fuel they put in their tanks is less energy efficient because ethanol isn’t as energy dense. Further, the increased demand for corn for use in ethanol increases the price of corn by as much as 68 percent, which affects not only Americans but the world, because corn is a staple food in many countries as well as a staple feed for livestock. In addition, ethanol has proven to be harmful to smaller engines.

Though environmental organizations initially supported the mandate to reduce oil use and greenhouse gas emissions, many now argue that the ethanol mandate is poor environmental policy. When radical environmentalists and free-market groups, the UN, motorcyclists, ranchers, anti-poverty groups, restaurants and others agree on something, maybe it’s time to listen.

Ferguson riots are Obama's legacy

They are the “Obama riots.”

President Barack Obama will forever rightly hold a distinguished place in American history. That can never be taken away from him.

But it is also true that he owns every single bit of these riots over the tragic killing of unarmed teenager Michael Brown. He owns the discontent. He owns the ignorance. He owns the mayhem. He owns the looting.

This rioting, it’s not about Ferguson. It’s not about Michael Brown. It’s not about Darren Wilson.

After all, an independent grand jury evaluated all the evidence, heard from all the witnesses and asked every question 12 responsible Americans could possibly think up. And they determined that, however unfortunate, Brown’s death was not a police murder.

Labor union work by federal employees on ‘official time’ costs taxpayers millions

Unionized federal employees spent 2.48 million hours working for their labor unions while getting paid by taxpayers during 2013, and more than 360 workers who are on the federal payroll spent 100 percent of their time working for their union.

Under federal rules, employees who are members of a labor union are entitled to so-called “official time,” where they are dismissed from their duties as a government employee to engage in labor union organizing activities. A new report from the Government Accountability Office shows the use of official time has increased over the past several years as the size of the federal workforce has grown.

Competitive Eater Gobbles Down 9.35 Pounds Of Turkey In 10 Minutes

Good luck trying to get anywhere near the amount of turkey the winner of a holiday-themed eating contest just shoved down his gullet in the amount of time it takes me to decide how large of a scoop of mashed potatoes I can serve myself without having everyone behind me in line hate me.

Competitive eater Joey Chestnut shoveled an entire turkey (barring the bones and other inedible bits, naturally) in under 10 minutes, reports CBS Philly, showing that the holiday birds aren’t the only ones going “gobble, gobble gobble.”

“I stuck with my plan going for the bottom meat first then got the breasts and then just drank and drank and swallowed,” he said after the Connecticut event, reports the New York Daily News. “It’s before Thanksgiving when everybody is a competitive eater. Turkey is awesome. I’m just happy to be here and was able to win today.”

John Kerry Advised Russian Foreign Minister ‘Just Ignore Obama’

US Secretary of State Adivses Russian Counterpart Not To Take US President's Words At Face Value

Though it went entirely unnoticed in the Western press, all major Russian news outlets – RIA Novosti, Sputnik, RT, and others – were only too happy to report on what US Secretary of State John Kerry said last week to the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in private: “Just ignore Obama’s statements.”

According to Mr. Lavrov, John Kerry advised him not to pay too much attention to the US President’s harsh rhetoric directed toward his state. As recently as September, during his speech to the 69th UN General Assembly in New York, Mr. Obama puzzled and shocked Mr. Lavrov by placing “Russian aggression in Europe” in second place among the world’s threats, behind only the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, resigning to third place the “brutality of terrorists in Syria and Iraq.” “Aggressive Russia” again was included in Mr. Obama’s world top-danger list during November’s G20 Summit in Australia.

According to a translation commissioned by the Observer, Mr. Kerry advised Mr. Lavrov to “just ignore Obama’s statements.” Google translator phrases the nuance slightly differently: “Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says US Secretary of State John Kerry called on him to ‘pay no mind’ to a statement by President Obama.” But the take-home message is clearly the same.

What I Find Unfortunate And Unfair

Earlier today I published a Press Release about a fatal accident early this morning.

The release stated, "Preliminary investigation reveals alcohol may have been a factor."

Now here's what I see wrong about this statement. First of all, there is the possibility that the Family could have had alcohol in the car and the containers were compromised in this horrific accident.

When I think about it, I 'm not saying it wasn't at all possible but one would think that it would be pretty unusual for someone to be traveling with their Family at 3:00 in the morning after drinking, just my thoughts.

The problem I see is, there is never a follow up Press release stating alcohol was NOT a factor, (should that be the case). Now the information is on the Internet along with names.

I can't tell you how many times I have reached out to public officials and legislators asking them to change the protocol on any and all incidents like this, including DUI/DWI. Until that person is convicted, (found guilty) WHY is law enforcement allowing such information to be on record for the world to see? You wouldn't believe just how many of these Press Releases we've published in which people are found NOT GUILTY.

That being said, why can't they simply publish only the people who are found guilty? IF they choose to continue to publish information the way they do now, they should be required to do a follow up Press Release announcing those who are found INNOCENT and clear their name.

Here Are The 10 Worst States To Retire

They are singing about the city, not the state, but for those who choose the Empire State in which to live in retirement, it's true: If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.

New York ranks among the 10 worst states in which to retire, according to a new report by Money-Rates.com.

It's not so much crime that earned New York its ranking.

The state, perhaps surprisingly, holds the nation's lowest rate of property crime per capita. It is more the oft-times harsh climate and high standard of living.

These are three of five overall categories author Richard Barrington, CFA, considered in determining the worst states in which to retire. The other two are the size and growth of the state's senior population and life expectancy at age 65.

In retirement planning, where to retire can be as important as when. The primary financial fear of affluent households, according to Spectrem’s Millionaire Corner research, is running out of money in retirement. Making an ill-considered choice can drain retirement savings.

Report: 109 Sears And Kmart Stores Now Expected To Close By Early 2015

There’s more cost-cutting planned at Sears Holdings through the end of this year and the beginning of next year. That news shouldn’t surprise anyone, but the total has increased to 39 Sears stores, and 70 Kmart stores, along with one Sears distribution center, one Kmart distribution center, and three Sears repair centers.

Financial research site Seeking Alpha used local news reports and information from current Sears and Kmart employees to assemble what it believes is a comprehensive national list of stores and facilities that are going to close. The list isn’t confirmed, because Sears Holdings will not confirm the truth of the list: at best, it will not deny the information that Seeking Alpha is putting out.

Two additions to the list are the Sears repair center and distribution center in Columbus, Ohio. The two Sears Auto locations that were slated for closing while the associated Sears store remained open have been removed from the Seeking Alpha list, probably due to clarification from Sears or updates from employees of that location. Some of the scheduled closing dates have also been moved up, which may prove problematic for shoppers using layaway plans, who now need to have their plans moved to another store or to Kmart.com, or perhaps canceled altogether.

How To Survive Thanksgiving At Your Liberal Relatives

As a public service to our readers, and as a gesture towards civility in our national discourse, we offer the following how-to-guide for surviving Thanksgiving dinner at the home of your triumphant liberal relatives:
Arrival. “Your home looks lovely.

Almost like it’s worth what you paid for it. Obama didn’t help with that yet, did he? Oh, well, maybe next term. May I use your bathroom?”

In the unlikely event that your host’s home has appreciated in value, use this introduction instead: “Love what you’ve done with it. Better dump it before the new year, though, or you might face that new Obamacare tax.” (Wait until after dinner to make a lowball offer.)

Greetings. “Oh, grandma, I’m so sorry about what Obama did to your Medicare. I tried to stop him.”

“Little Johnny, all grown up. Still looking for a job? Oh. There’s always grad school, you know. I hear Obama will pay your student loans.”

Why we love ‘cronuts’

LAST MONTH, pastry chef Dominique Ansel rolled out a new item at his Manhattan bakery. He took croissant dough, shaped it into a doughnut, deep fried it, and filled it with Tahitian vanilla cream. Then came the master stroke: He dubbed his croissant-doughnut hybrid the “cronut.”

New York’s diners—and food bloggers—were entranced. Soon there were long lines of trend-spotting customers hoping to taste the latest culinary sensation. In a matter of weeks, cronuts became New York’s most precious commodity, spawning a black market on Craigslist and selling for as much as $35 above the $5 counter price.

“Cronut” is a lexical blend, or what Lewis Carroll called a “portmanteau,” in which, as Humpty Dumpty explained to Alice, “there are two meanings packed up into one word.” In French, “portmanteau” is itself a portmanteau, combining “porter” (“to carry”) and “manteau” (“cloak”) to make a name for a cloak-carrying suitcase.

The cronut itself is effectively a portmanteau as well, fusing two great tastes that taste great together. Portmanteaus seem to hit a sweet spot both culinarily and linguistically. Like the old “X meets Y” movie pitches (“Oblivion” is “The Matrix” meets “Wall-E”!), a portmanteau can offer us something new that is nevertheless based in two completely familiar things. The current popularity of “cronut”-style blending suggests that in both language and cuisine, we can stomach novelty as long as the components are recognizable.

Obama and the Roots of the Ferguson Rage

And so the whirlwind, cultivated by Barack Obama, Eric Holder, Al Sharpton, the mainstream media and the army of thugs they enabled, is now being reaped. As the result of a St. Louis County grand jury refusing to indict officer Darren Wilson for the shooting death of Michael Brown, Ferguson, MO has become Ground Zero, in what irresponsible Missouri State Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadali referred to on MSNBC as “St. Louis’s race war.”

One of the race war’s architects pleaded for calm shortly after the decision was announced. Yet even as Obama spoke about that “need for calm” and that there was “no excuse for violence,” he insisted, “We have to try to understand” the anger of those who demanded nothing less than a murder charge absent an ounce of evidence as an “understandable reaction” from people who believe “the law is being applied in a discriminatory fashion.”

Where did those people get that belief? Leave it to Obama to omit that critical information — the same President Obama who met with protest leaders and Sharpton on Nov. 5 at the White House. It was at that unscheduled meeting the president was ostensibly “concerned about Ferguson staying on course in terms of pursuing what it was that he knew we were advocating,” according to Sharpton. “He said he hopes that we’re doing all we can to keep peace.”

A Letter To The Editor: Today's Daily Times Article on Wardell Turner

Joe,

The DT has done it again by doing a half-assed job verifying information before publishing it. The picture on page A2 under Earl Holland's STRENGTH article is not SGM Turner but rather some other guy. I had the pleasure of knowing Wardell and believe, that is not him. For reference just look at the other picture below in the other article.

What a disservice to him and his family. It appears to me like someone found a stock photo and put it in the article for filler space.

If I may I would like to say goodbye to my old classmate and fellow Army veteran Sergeant Major Wardell Turner and I hope that his family will come to accept their loss in as timely a manner as possible and to take today to reflect upon what they had and not what they lost.

Thanks for all that you do Joe. Take care and Happy Thanksgiving to you and everyone else on the blog.

Walmart Still Avoiding Paying $7000 Fine For Worker Killed By Black Friday Shoppers In 2008

In 2008, a Walmart employee was killed when a mob of deal-desperate Black Friday shoppers tore the store’s doors from their hinges and stormed inside, trampling him to death. The chain was eventually fined $7000 for their role in the employee’s death — but six years and $2 million later, the world’s largest retailer has yet to pay up.

The fine was the result of an investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which found that Walmart did indeed put employees at risk by failing to put “reasonable and effective” crowd management in place. When the fine — the maximum possible — was levied in May of 2009, Walmart had 15 days either to pay or to appeal.

The chain, which brought in over $475 billion in revenue last year, chose to appeal the $7000 fine. A year later, in 2010, they’d spent more than $2 million on the appeal. Their argument went to the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission — an independent group set up to rule on challenges to OSHA penalties — back in 2011. And it’s been sitting there ever since.

The Forgotten Americans

Obama’s coalition is held together only by his personal mythography.

Political analysts still are arguing over why the Democratic party was washed away in the midterm election. Since 2008, ascendant progressives had been crowing over a fresh mosaic of energized minorities, newly franchised immigrants, single young urban women, greens, gays, and — less often mentioned — upscale professionals and the 1-percenter super-wealthy.

These groups were united by their support for the expansion of entitlements, higher taxes, neo-isolationism, amnesty, opposition to any restrictions on abortion, curbs on carbon-energy development, and gay marriage. But what really held them together was Barack Obama. His exotic name, his racial background, his leftwing ideology, and his Ivy League training appealed to each of these diverse groups. Without him on the ballot — as in 2010 and 2014 — most of these identity groups apparently were not energized enough to turn out in sufficient numbers to make up for middle-class voters turned off by progressive rhetoric and the by-any-means-necessary distortions to achieve its ends.

Indeed, a cynic would sum up the unlikely liberal coalition as a bridge over the middle class. Wealthy, influential progressives had enough capital and income to support new efforts at government redistribution, higher taxes, and the sort of green projects that, at least in the short term, would slow the economy and cost blue-collar jobs — but not really affect the 1 percenters’ own livelihoods much.

Maryland SC NAACP Press Statement in Response To Ferguson Grand Jury Decision

Forwarded and supported by
Wicomico County NAACP Branch 7028.Mary Ashanti, President

Last night, we watched in deep disappointment, as the Ferguson Grand Jury did not indict Officer Darren Wilson for the tragic death of Michael Brown Jr.

As a tireless defender of the civil rights of all Marylanders, the Maryland State Conference of the NAACP stands with our local branches, community members, and young people who are committed to continuing the fight against racial profiling, police brutality and the militarization of local authorities here in the state of Maryland.

This moment marks the beginning of a new stage of advocacy and presents an opportunity for Maryland's lawmakers to step up and show that they respect the lives of our youth and our law enforcement.

That is why the Maryland State Conference of the NAACP will work tirelessly with partners and local units to pursue legislation to protect citizens and law enforcement from acts of violence as well as demilitarize the police force, and establish independent oversight of police involved deaths to create a more transparent review process which include:

Requiring all Maryland Police cars have dash cameras, and all Maryland police officers wear body cameras

Requiring independent review of every police involved shooting in the state

Requiring diversity training for all officers in the state

Requiring the establishment of local citizens review boards for police oversight, and

Establishing concrete steps to lower the current amount of military weapons and equipment flowing to police forces in the state, and limit the purchase of said weapons and equipment in the future.

Maryland State Conference NAACP President, Gerald Stansbury-

"As defenders of the civil rights of all Marylanders, we have a requirement to protect the most basic civil right in our country--the right to live; and the Maryland State Conference of the NAACP, our local units, and our allies will not stand down until we create greater accountability and security for our citizens and law enforcement alike. And the best way for us to do that is to institutionalize reform."

Opposition to Common Core spurs jump in homeschooling

The home-schooling boom is getting a new push due to opposition to Common Core, the controversial national education standard that some parents claim is using their children’s public school lessons to push a political agenda, according to critics of the Washington-backed curriculum.

North Carolina, already a home-schooling hotbed, saw a 14 percent rise last year in the number of students being educated at home, according to a report fromHeartlander Magazine. Similar increases have been seen in Virginia, California and New York, according to education activists.

“If you look at national, and even state polls, you can see that the more familiar people become with Common Core, the more they dislike it,” Bob Lubke, a senior policy analyst for the North Carolina-based Civitas Institute, told FoxNews.com. “They feel like they are losing control of what their kids are learning.”

Forget Ferguson, 244 Teenagers Have Been Shot In Chicago Since Michael Brown Died

While the events down in Ferguson play out, back in Chicagoland, HeyJackass reports that the same old bullsh!t continues day in and day out with nary a peep. In the 107 days since officer Darren Wilson shot and killed 18 year old Michael Brown – 12:03pm, Saturday, August 9th – the following stupidity has taken place in Chicago:

155 homicides (74% black males)
725 shot & wounded
Six (6) 18 year olds killed: Kawantis Montgomery, Kamaal Burton, Tony McIntos, Alexandra Burgos, Rayvon Little, Johnathan Cartwright
59 18 year olds shot & wounded
29 teenagers (13-19) killed
244 teenagers (13-19) shot and wounded
10 shot (5 killed) by the CPD

Brutal, yet incredibly asinine and absurd to say the least.

Bad Parrot

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse  vocabulary.

Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxiousand laced withprofanity. John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to 'clean up' the bird's vocabulary.

Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer.

For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed.
Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.

Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerelyremorsefulfor my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivablebehavior."

John wasstunned at the change in the bird's attitude.

As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird spoke-up, very softly, "May I ask what the turkey did?"

And you thought there were no clean jokes left!

Atheist Group Loses Lawsuit to Ban Day of Prayer

DENVER — The Colorado Supreme Court threw out a legal challenge to the governor’s honorary Day of Prayer proclamations Monday, ruling that members of an anti-religion group lacked standing to bring the lawsuit.

The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation had sued on behalf of four Colorado residents who objected to the governor’s tradition of declaring a state Day of Prayer on the same day as the National Day of Prayer, calling the practice unconstitutional.

Chief Justice Nancy E. Rice, who wrote the opinion on behalf of the 5-2 majority, said that those bringing the lawsuit failed to show that any harm done by the annual proclamation was “injury sufficient to establish individual standing.”

Happy Thanksgiving from the Hogans

My fellow Marylanders,
As we traveled the state over the last few years, we were privileged to meet many thousands of Marylanders from all walks of life, in cities and suburbs and on farms, young families just starting out and retirees, skilled tradesmen and professionals. Nearly without exception, the men and women whom we met along the way were grateful to call themselves Marylanders. For whatever their individual challenges and circumstances, they believe that if we work together—across the lines of party, geography, income, and race—we can change Maryland for the better. And we will.

As we enjoy our Thanksgiving meals, let us not forget our obligations to the farmers and watermen whose hard work produces our food and those who bring it to market, and the vital work of restoring our economy so no one goes hungry. And as we gather with family and friends this holiday season, let’s not forget those with empty seats at their tables for loved ones serving our nation abroad, or those who gave the last full measure of devotion for our freedom and liberty.

In giving thanks to our Creator for our blessings, for our great nation and a beautiful state, I am profoundly grateful for the trust Marylanders have placed in me as their next governor, and keenly aware of the hard work and challenges that lie ahead for my administration, our colleagues in the legislature, and the state employees whom I will soon be honored to call co-workers.
In closing, we wish you and your family health and happiness this Thanksgiving.

Your friends,

Larry and Yumi Hogan

Command Sgt. Maj. killed in Afghanistan

Command Sgt. Maj. Wardell Turrner, assigned to a key training command in Afghanistan, was killed Monday, according to a friend and Facebook posts.

Two soldiers were killed Monday morning when a bomb hidden in the median strip of a street in eastern Kabul detonated as a convoy of coalition troops drove by, according to a New York Times report.

The bomb struck a Toyota Land Cruiser and also wounded a passerby, Afghan police told the Times.

The names and nationalities of the soldiers have not been released by the American-led International Security Assistance Force. The policy of the U.S. Department of Defense is to not release the name of casualties until 24 hours after the next of kin has been identified.

But Turner's death was confirmed by Elmer Davis, a close friend who had known Turner since high school. Davis said a family member informed him of his friend's death.

Parksley Woman Admits $7.2 Million Child-credit Tax Scam

More than a year after Watchdog.org reported the IRS sent thousands of refunds to the tiny town of Parksley, Va., a woman has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and mail fraud.

Linda Avila admitted to obtaining more than $7.2 million in refunds by exploiting the federal government’s child tax credit program.

Avila filed more than 1,700 tax returns with stolen identifications used by illegal immigrants, mainly from Mexico.

The Virginian-Pilot reported that Avila, 50, operated a landscaping and cleaning business in Parksley.

Investigators found copies of refund checks in amounts from $4,000 to more than $7,000. The tax returns frequently cited foreign dependents, which increased the refund amounts.
