JUST IN: Actor Richard Bull Dies At The Age of 89

Richard Bull  was an American film actor, stage actor and television actor.

He is best known for his performance as Nels Oleson, the kindly proprietor of Oleson's Mercantile and the long suffering husband of his wife Harriet on the NBC TV series Little House on the Prairie which aired from 1974 to 1983 and "Doc" on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

Ohio Man's Wish Fulfilled As He Is Buried On Motorcycle

The dying wish of an Ohio motorcycle aficionado that he be buried astride his beloved Harley-Davidson was fulfilled by his family -- although it wasn't easy.

Billy Standley's body was prepped by five embalmers with a metal back brace and straps, The Dayton Daily News reported. He was affixed on top of his bike – a 1967 Electra Glide cruiser-- which was then placed inside a Plexiglas casket. For five years, the box stayed in Standley's garage, one of his sons told the newspaper.

Alarm On Use Of Steroids By Gay Teens

Gay and bisexual teenage boys use illicit steroids at a rate almost six times that of straight kids, a “dramatic disparity” that points up a need to reach out to this group, a study has found.

Reasons for the differences are unclear. The study authors said that it’s possible that gay and bisexual boys feel more pressure to achieve a bulked-up “ideal” male physique, or that they think
muscle-building steroids will help them fend off bullies.

Their research was released Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

Saying No To The U.S. Census

A Woodsboro couple is refusing to respond to a U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey, saying the federal government's questionnaire is too invasive.

Now, Bob and Joan Rapier say their lack of response is being met with harassing phone calls from Census employees, one of which threatened a fine of up to $5,000.

“We are being harassed,” said Joan Rapier, 68.

The couple said they received a 28-page questionnaire about two weeks before Christmas. Aside from more innocuous questions like the number of people in the household, the questionnaire seeks answers about home mortgages and income. Joan Rapier said those questions were “offensive to us.”

“Somebody got carried away with this,” said Bob Rapier, 72.

Is Chipotle’s Anti-GMO Stance Resulting In Profits?

Last year, gut-busting burrito chain Chipotle quietly became the first restaurant of its type to begin identifying which of its ingredients may contain genetically modified ingredients, while also publicly stating that its long-term goal is to eliminate GMO ingredients from its menu. This can be a costly move in a business with relatively thin margins, but it may be working in Chipotle’s favor.

BusinessWeek takes a look at the Colorado-based chain’s sales since it made its anti-GMO stance known to the public.

Chipotle recently reported a 30% increase in quarterly profits and sales at stores open more than a year were up 9.3%. In the last quarter of 2013, stores were averaging an additional $622/day over the same time period in 2012.

“The most obvious difference in the company’s approach was its vow in March to eliminate genetically engineered ingredients,” writes BusinessWeek’s Kyle Stock.

You know the feeling when you reach into the pocket of some jeans or a jacket you haven’t worn in a while and come up with a $5 bill? Multiply that feeling by a whole lot and imagine what it’d be like to find a suit stuffed with cash for a grand total of $43,000.

This wasn’t a long-lost winter coat pulled out of seasonal storage though, but a donated set of clothing at a Goodwill store in Michigan, reports the Monroe News.

State Delegate Candidate Carl Anderton Press Release: Poultry Fair Share Act

When Governor O'Malley introduced this year's budget he said that there would be no tax increases, but just 4 weeks in there are several- including a Senate bill filed today (sb0725), which would tax each chicken that is delivered to a chicken farm at a rate of 5 cents each.

It's bad policy at any time, but given our regional economy, it is particularly troubling. The gun control law passed last year has already chased jobs from Maryland, with Beretta investing $45 million in a new facility in Tennessee.
How many jobs in Wicomico County would this bill eliminate?

While pondering that question think of all the other industries that poultry companies support. Whether it is the purchase of new farm equipment, cars and trucks, hand tools and even local restaurants and hotels that often play host to business meetings. This is bad policy, a bad bill and would make an even worse law!

Please join me in talking to your elected officials to stop this bill.

Our economic future could very well be at stake.

Correct Spelling, Canceled

As an American, I laugh at those archaic British spellings. Colour? Honour? Their inferiourity, if you will, is obvious. Centre? Theatre? Ridiculous. Most of these barbaric forms were corrected in America hundreds of years ago. Yet one galling Britishism is appearing on my computer screen all too frequently of late: “cancelled,” with a gratuitous extra l.

Does something about Obamacare drive otherwise reasonable people to write about health plans being “cancelled” instead of “canceled”? Does the prospect of intrusive government involvement in health care cause us to regress? Is it subconscious deference to British and Canadian expertise at imposing socialized medicine? Whatever the cause, it needs to stop.

Noah Webster, our greatest spelling reformer, understood that creating a distinctive American language was part and parcel of being a great nation.

“A capital advantage of this reform in these states would be, that it would make a difference between the English orthography and the American,” he wrote in one of his earliest essays. “A national language is a band of national union. Every engine should be employed to render the people of this country national; to call their attachments home to their own country; and to inspire them with the pride of national character.”

Do-gooders Know Best About Wages

Raising the minimum wage is all the rage among liberal Democrats and liberal advocacy groups. Listening to them it’s clear a much higher minimum will dramatically close the income inequity gap.

Nirvana is just around the corner.

All this is well intentioned. Yes, there is a widening gulf between America’s very rich and the middle and lower classes. Yes, the nation’s minimum wage needs adjustment. Those at on the bottom of American society need extra financial help.

But is the nearly 40 percent jump in the minimum wage proposed by President Obama and his wannabe successor, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, the solution?

Will prosperity suddenly blossom, job-growth flourish and the poor take home enough pay to cover all expenses?

Sadly, the answer is “no.”

Fair Weather Greets Thousands Of Polar Bear Plungers

REHOBOTH BEACH — Thousands of Special Olympics Delaware supporters plunged into a sub-40-degree Atlantic Ocean Sunday afternoon again raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the organization. Fair weather smiled on the 23rd Annual Lewes Polar Bear Plunge as temperatures in the 50 degree-range and calm seas greeted enthusiastic polar bears. After a week with temperatures not much more than zero, the weekend's warm weather felt like nothing less than divine intervention.

Thirty minutes before the 1 p.m. dunk, a sea breeze kicked in quickly dropping the air temperature by nine degrees. That did little to quell the enthusiasm of people from all over Delaware who made downtown Rehoboth swell with summer-like crowds.

Is Acetaminophen Safe?? Absolutely Not!

Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) is safe to use during pregnancy, right? Is it safe to take anytime you need pain relief or have a headache? I will show you that acetaminophen is a potentially dangerous drug. Most health care providers are not knowledgeable about what acetaminophen actually does in the body.

If you go on the website for Tylenol® (www.Tylenol.com) you see pictures of smiling, young women holding their happy babies. It would appear from these pictures that it is perfectly safe for anyone to take acetaminophen. To be fair, if you dig into the safety and pregnancy link, it says that before a pregnant woman takes Tylenol® she should consult her doctor. However, I would venture to guess that most doctors would say it is safe to take acetaminophen during pregnancy. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

A recent study (1) looked at the toxicity of acetaminophen use during pregnancy. The researchers studied 48,631 children whose mothers filled out a questionnaire about their use of acetaminophen during pregnancy. Within this group, there were 2,919 same-sex sibling pairs who were used to adjust for confounding factors. The analysis of the data found that three-year-old children exposed to prenatal acetaminophen for more than 28 days, as compared to children exposed to acetaminophen less than 28 days and those not exposed, had significant declines in gross motor development, externalizing behavior, internalizing behavior, and higher activity levels. The researchers state, “In clinical terms, these results suggest that exposure to {acetaminophen} for more than 28 days during fetal life increases the risk of adverse psychomotor and behavioral outcomes by almost 70% and doubles the risk of language problems in 3-year old children.”

We Are Giving Ourselves Cancer

DESPITE great strides in prevention and treatment, cancer rates remain stubbornly high and may soon surpass heart disease as the leading cause of death in the United States. Increasingly, we and many other experts believe that an important culprit may be our own medical practices: We are silently irradiating ourselves to death.

The use of medical imaging with high-dose radiation — CT scans in particular — has soared in the last 20 years. Our resulting exposure to medical radiation has increased more than sixfold between the 1980s and 2006, according to the National Council on Radiation Protection & Measurements. The radiation doses of CT scans (a series of X-ray images from multiple angles) are 100 to 1,000 times higher than conventional X-rays.

Of course, early diagnosis thanks to medical imaging can be lifesaving. But there is distressingly little evidence of better health outcomes associated with the current high rate of scans. There is, however, evidence of its harms.

Theft Is Deflationary - Especially The Crony-Capitalist/State Kind

Monopoly power in all its forms--in our system, crony capitalism and its partner, the neofeudal state--enables theft on a systemic scale.

If a monopoly forces its customers to pay more for low-quality goods and services because they have no choice, how is that not theft?

If the Mafia raises the price of "protection" on small businesses (another case of monopoly and no other choice), how is that extortion not theft?

When a local government raises junk fees to fund its cronies' excessive (i.e. non-market-rate) salaries and pensions, how is that monopoly power to extort more money from those with no other choice any different from Mafia extortion/theft?

If a pharmaceutical company extends a patent on a costly medication by changing the dosage slightly, how is that not theft via regulatory capture? If a government contractor charges the Pentagon $1,000 for a hammer (all those overhead charges, tsk-tsk--lobbying corrupt politicos costs a lot, you know), how is that not theft of taxpayers' money?

When the Federal Reserve drops the yield on savings to near-zero to funnel all that stolen wealth to its cronies on Wall Street, how is that not theft?

Monopoly power in all its forms--in our system, crony capitalism and its partner, the neofeudal state--enables theft on a systemic scale. When crony capitalism and the state are essentially one system, the propaganda organs of the state and mainstream corporate media combine to persuade the stripmined populace that their theft is not theft, it's "capitalism and democracy at work." This is known as The Big Lie. What we have is systemic theft, predation and exploitation.

Calling things what they really are would upset the apple cart of systemic exploitation. Let's Call Things What They Really Are in 2014 (January 15, 2014)

State Treasurer Kopp Opposes O’Malley’s $100M Cut In Md. Pension Contribution

State Treasurer Nancy Kopp told lawmakers Thursday that she opposed Gov. Martin O’Malley’s proposed $100 million cut in the pension contribution, and said it would undermine trust by the state’s bond rating agencies.

“I think this is a very difficult thing to defend with the rating agencies,” Kopp told the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Public Safety and Administration.

Kopp was testifying as chairman of the State Retirement and Pension System Board of Trustees. As treasurer, she is also the top state official that handles Maryland’s bond issues and deals with the three New York firms that rate them.

School Choice Defies Fed Ed

Common Core and the effort to coerce conformity kills choice.

The freedom-enhancing, life-improving power of school choice is more than a theory for me. It’s more than a talking-points memo or teleprompter speech. Unlike many of the politicians paying lip service to National School Choice Week this week, I live, breathe, practice, and witness the issue of expanding educational opportunity and freedom for all, every day.

My mother was a public-school teacher who taught in a majority-minority district in New Jersey for more than two decades. She and my father worked hard to put their own children in a mix of public and private Catholic schools. My own two children have been enrolled in private schools, religious schools, and public schools. After a great deal of research, we moved from the East Coast to Colorado to escape the corrupted, dumbed-down curriculum of an overpriced private girls’ school.

Life lesson: It’s not just government schools that are the problem. Many supposedly “elite” schools indulge in the senseless pedagogical fads that infect monopoly public schools.

Parents Finally Revolting

As those in power continue to hang onto the 19th century model of education or accept Common Core indoctrination for their students, parents are moving toward becoming the “deciders” as they chose charter and private schools, homeschooling, and online programs, it is leaving thousands of empty school buildings all across America.

According to a recent study among the cities with vacant school buildings are
Atlanta
Chicago
Cincinnati
Cleveland
Detroit
Kansas City
Milwakee
Philadelphia
Pittsburg
St. Louis
Tulsa
Washington

Author Glenn H. Reynolds provides insights into why parents are abandoning traditional public education and why it will continue to be abandoned. In “The New School” book he maintains that the concept of “one size fits all” mentality by educators is driving the demise of the public school system. He examines how the leftist university bias further exacerbates programs that have little to do with teaching students how to learn and think.

Maryland Ranks Among Worst States For Fiscal Health In George Mason Study

George Mason University
Maryland was ranked as having the 44th-worst financial condition in the U.S

As Gov. Martin O’Malley released his fiscal year 2015 budget Wednesday, Maryland was recognized for all the wrong financial reasons.

Maryland ranks in the bottom 10 — 44th to be exact — of states in terms of overall fiscal condition, according to a study by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.

States at the bottom of the list, including Maryland, can attribute that to years of poor financial management decisions, bad economic conditions, or a combination of both.

The study uses financial reporting data from 2012 to rank each state based on four solvency measures. Those measures include: cash solvency, budget solvency, long-run solvency and service-level solvency. Maryland ranked 40th or worse in three of the four measurable areas.

Cash solvency reflects the cash a state can easily access to pay its bills in the near term, while budget solvency is a state’s ability to create enough revenue to cover its expenditures over a fiscal year.

The Greatest Threat To Our Freedoms?

The reality Americans must contend with is that the world is no better the day after President Obama’s State of the Union address than it was the day before. Indeed, if the following rundown on the actual state of our freedoms is anything to go by, the world is a far more dangerous place.

Americans have no protection against police abuse. It is no longer unusual to hear about incidents in which police shoot unarmed individuals first and ask questions later, such as the 16-year-old teenager who skipped school only to be shot by police after they mistook him for a fleeing burglar. Then there was the unarmed black man in Texas “who was pursued and shot in the back of the neck by Austin Police… after failing to properly identify himself and leaving the scene of an unrelated incident.” And who could forget the 19-year-old Seattle woman who was accidentally shot in the leg by police after she refused to show her hands?

Americans are no longer innocent until proven guilty. We once operated under the assumption that you were innocent until proven guilty. Due in large part to rapid advances in technology and a heightened surveillance culture, the burden of proof has been shifted so that the right to be considered innocent until proven guilty has been usurped by a new norm in which all citizens are suspects.
